The Golden Shadow
Prologue
Twelve Years Ago
In a small village separated from the main village in a diverse land, lived a six year old boy with spiky bright blonde hair and oceanic blue eyes. He didn't live aloen of course. He had his mother and father who were known as Kushina Namikaze Uzumaki and Minato Namikaze. The houses in the village they dwelled was a comfortable sized hut comprised out of a specific type of stone which others mind for in order to fashion such households as well as other buildings. The stone could be onyx, amethyst, or another type depending on what the miners managed to dig up. The life this young child has had seemed to be great. His parents loved him dearly. They were outside playing with the young Naruto. Minato was chasing him around while Kushina watched. She smiled, happy to have such a wonderful husband and a beautiful son. She glanced up, noticing it was growing late.
"Minato, come inside with our child," called the redheaded woman gently. "It's time we went back inside. It's growing late."
"Alright," nodded Minato, managing to catch their energetic kid who was giggling merrily before his father carried him inside. "Huh, where did the day go? Haha, it must've slipped away from us."
"Probably," agreed Kushina, giggling lightly as Minato closed the door to their home, setting Naruto on the ground as he ran up to his mother, looking up at her.
"Will you or daddy please tell me a story tonight?" asked Naruto, pouting as Kushina tried to withhold the bubling laughter she felt at seeing the cute expression on their son's face.
"Of course," she assured softly, ruffling his hair affectionately, shooting her husband a light glare as she knew he didn't like the story she told their son most nights. "I'm sure after playing outside after supper tired you out. Let's get you to bed then I'll tell you the story if you want the usual one."
"Yay!" cheered Naruto as he darted into his room.
Before Kushina could follow, Minato placed a firm hand on her shoulder as he murmured in a low tone for only her ears to hear, "Must you tell him that story? You should stop teling it to him. If you do he'll eventually want to find the truth. I don't want his hopes to be crushed."
"It's harmless," she hissed, glaring at him again. "I want him to remember it well if anything happens. I won't stop him if he wants to find out the truth."
"Is it really a story you're telling him, love?" sighed the older blonde, his lips drawn into a frown. "You know as well as I do that the people mentioned in your story must be fake."
She scowled, exasperated at her husband, "Minato, I won't argue on this any further. If he wants to hear the story I won't refuse. It's important to me to share it with him. Do you understand?"
"Yes, just...be careful, ok?" he asked, giving her a small smile although there remains a hint of worry in his eyes.
"Of course," she smiled, moving out of his grasp as she entered her son's room, noticing he had been waiting for her.
"Yay, story time!" giggled Naruto, looking up at his mother as he had been waiting patiently.
"Indeed, story time," she chuckled lightly, tucking her son into bed before she sat down in the chair beside it. "Do you want the usual one or a new story?"
"Usual," replied Naruto, smiling as he always looked forward to hearing the story she told him most nights.
"Very well then," she smiled back, assuring him it was alright. "A long time ago there was a race of people who lived in the sea. Do you remember who they were?"
"The merfolk?" asked Naruto hopefully.
"Yes," nodded Kushina. "I'm glad you remembered them. You see, they had a few princes and princesses within their kingdom. There was one who had long red hair and green eyes."
"Mommy!" interrupted Naruto, causing her to giggle lightly.
"Yes, that was mommy," she confirmed. "She used to have a long tail, scales, and could breathe underwater. But one day, there was someone on the surface who wanted to see her people. He was a human. He desired to make a pact between the two, hoping for peace amongst humans and merfolk."
"Was that daddy?" asked Naruto, interrupting again although Kushina didn't mind.
"Yes, it was," said Kushina, pleased her son recalled another part of it. "What the human had to do to accomplish his goal was to see the sea witch. He had to ask her for a potion to give him a tail. She agreed, but he had to pay a price for it. When he came to the kingdom he met with the king and queen. He explained that he was really a human and not a merman. They were resistant at first to create the pact, but he impressed them."
"How?" Naruto inquired, engrossed in the story his mother was telling him even though he's heard it multiple times before it never seemed to tire him.
"He saved the princess a few times," Kushina replied, continuing the story. "In return, they repayed him by accepting the pact. Although when he returned to the sea witch to go back to the surface, he needed to pay the price. If he were to become a human again he'd have to lose something precious to him."
"What was it?" inquired the young blonde haired male.
"It was his journal," explained Kushina. "It's where he had jotted down the various experiences in his life which included his ups and downs."
"What happened to the princess?" asked Naruto.
"Well, before the human had left he had asked the princess to go with him. She agreed of course because the two were secretly in love with each other. The king and queen forebade her from seeing or even leaving the sea to go with him. Fortunately, she managed to leave with him. The two married a few years later once they had a stable life on the surface together. Soon after, they had a baby boy. The three lived happily ever after."
Naruto yawned, "Thanks for the story, Mommy."
"You're welcome, my son. Now, it's time you went to sleep. Tomorrow will be another day. Goodnight," she said softly, kissing his forehead before she left his room, shutting the door quietly behind her as she walked to the room she and Minato shared.
"Is he asleep?" he asked quietly when she slipped into bed after changing into her nightly attire.
"Yes," she assured. "I do worry for him, you know. I do about you too."
"I know, my love," he wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. "Maybe you should try telling him other stories."
"Perhaps," she murmured thoughtfully. "I know he doesn't tire of hearing it, but still... Maybe you're right."
"You could try telling him stories of when you were growing up," suggested Minato, feeling her lay her head on his chest.
"Mmm, you could do that too, you know," grumbled Kushina, yawning.
"Indeed, well we should try to get some sleep. Goodnight, my love."

Seven Years Later
A few years later, they had left the village Minato and Kushina had raised their son in. Minato had been hired by the mining company. It didn't ease Kushina's worries about him. There's no telling what could happen down there. The village they used to live in was called Mizuashi. The one they moved to is the main village. It's larger than Mizuashi. There are various shops, places of business, better houses, etc. They're comprised of the same stone that's used in the smaller villages. The main village where they are is called Kazegakure. While the buildings are comprised of the stone, it's mostly mixes of gray, white, blue, and other brighter colors. It gives the place a positive aura. Aside from the new home and job, Kushina had begun Naruto's education after a few years of growing used to the new environment. She managed to enroll him in a school that's within walking distance. One day, when Naruto returned home from a day of school he saw his mother in tears. He rushed over, concerned about what may have caused her to become upset.
"What's wrong, mom?" he asked, keeping his tone calm and gentle as he didn't want to upset her even more depending on the reason.
"I-It's your father," she explained, trying to get her words out through the tears.
"Huh?" he asked, confused although he wanted to know what occurred he knew to be patient with how hot tempered his mother could be.
"You should sit down for this," she wiped her tear stained cheeks, taking a few deep breaths in and out to calm herself as her son sat down in a chair across from her. "I received a letter today from your father's boss."
"Did something happen to him?" inquired Naruto, trying to be patient although it wasn't easy for him.
"Y-Your father perished in the mine earlier today," explained Kushina, more tears welling up in her eyes as Naruto felt a few falling down his cheeks. "I know...this isn't easy to swallow. We'll manage somehow."
"How...could this happen?" asked Naruto quietly, shocked with the news he received.
"It happens sometimes when working in that type of environment," she explained to him, wiping her eyes again before she hugged her son, knowing this is tough on both of them.
"D-Did...they find his body?" Naruto hesitantly asked, not knowing if he wanted to hear the answer.
"From the letter it says his body was crushed from falling debris," said Kushina somberly.
"Oh," was all Naruto could say before the two fell into a few moments of silence until he spoek up again. "What will we do now?"
"We'll survive somehow. Minato wouldn't want either of us to fall into depression. He wouldn't want to see you or I allow ourselves to fall apart. He would want us to become stronger from the hardship and move on. I still believe in him. Besides...we'll see him again."

Three Years Later
When Naruto turned sixteen, things took a turn for the worse. His mother had fallen ill. It hadn't been due to depression or anything of that nature. It had started off simple enough with the two thinking it was a cold. While days passed, her condition grew to the point Naruto had taken her to see a medic. He had been helping out by working at a ramen shop. He enjoyed it of course because he loved ramen. Plus the customers knew of what happened to his father as well as what's going on with his mother at the moment. It doesn't take long for the rest of the village to find out what's going on even though Kazegakure is a rather spacious village. He visited his mother every day. He was hoping she would become better soon. Today, he's lsot hope. He doesn't know what will cure whatever ails her. He was currently sitting at her hospital bedside. Yes, well obviously the medics are stationed in such a facility. He held her hand, noticing she shook which happened whenever she coughed.
Naruto sighed, "Mother...I wish there was something I could do to help. I feel so useless."
"Don't worry," Kushina tried to assure, giving him a weak smile. "We're near the river, right?"
"Yes," he reassured. "I made sure of it."
"Y-You remember the story, right?" she asked, causing him to raise a brow as it was a strange moment to bring that up.
"Of course," nodded Naruto. "What about it?"
"Never forget it," she said, noticing her breathing and heartbeat were slowing down, causing him to panic while trying to stop tears from falling although it was a futile attempt sicne they were staining his cheeks. "Naruto...please, don't give up on your dreams. Don't forget, your father and I love you very much."
"Mother?" Naruto asked softly, feeling her hand in his became cold to the touch. "Mother! Please, wake up! You have to wake up!"

Present Time
Naruto shook his head. He's eighteen at this point. He shouldered a few hardships on him based on what happened in his past. He carried it on his heavy heart. He could recall when his mother passed during her funeral they had set her on a boat into the river. He had thought he saw a fish like creature take her body into the sea. She had vanished, but sometimes when Naruto looks at it he could feel a connection to it. He didn't know why. He sighed, rising up onto his feet. He's managed to stow away quite a bit of yen from working at the ramen shop. He felt determined to find out the truth. He never forgot what his mother told him with her last breaths of life. He gathered his things, placing them into a bag. He slung it over his shoulders. He decided to hit the market, buying some rations to last him a while. He knew there should be something available on the docks for him to purchase to use. He wasn't sure if he should get a boat and crew or something else. He continued feeling a pull towards the water. It confused him at times yet it also ensured his determination wouldn't falter.
"What are you looking for?" asked a man with silver hair, leaning against a barrel. "You seem lost. Maybe you lost yourself on the path of life."
"Heh, yeah maybe," replied Naruto, looking at the man with a frown as he didn't know what this guy wanted from him.
"Are you searching for a way out onto the sea?" asked the silver haired man. "If so, I'm the captain of a ship. You could join my crew."
Naruto bit his lip, thinking it over for a moment or so before he made his decision, "Yeah, that sounds great."
"Good, we set out in a few hours. Oh, by the way, my name's Kakashi Hatake," introduced the captain.
"Naruto Uzumaki Namikaze," replied the blonde, shaking the captain's hand before letting it go. "Thanks, I'll make sure to be there."
"Good," grunted Kakashi, waving him off to do whatever.
Naruto decided to walk around for a bit. He knew this would be the last time he'd be in Kazegakure. Did he really want to leave? Yes, he did. He knew he wanted to find out the truth. He's been seeing some strange things in his dreams. He also wanted to find out why he felt as if he were being pulled towards the water. He knew there must be a reason for it. He thought the captain gave off a lazy air. He doubted the man was really like that. He seems more laid back than lazy to him. He wondered what the rest of the crew would be like. He continued walking around, deep in his thoughts until it was time to head to the ship.
This is it, thought the blonde to himself. I'll be able to set out in order to seek the truth. Don't worry, mom. I haven't given up on my dreams. Believe it, I never will no matter what happens during the journey there.
A/N: Squee! I'm done with the prologue! I already love this story of mine. I think doing third perspective will work better when trying to do a Naruto story. I hope ya'll enjoyed this. I did my best. I'll have the next chappie out soonish, but please be patient with me. Remember to review lovelies!
