Sasuke Uchiha sighed as he finally shut down his computer for the day, eager to get home before the evening rush hour traffic began, not that there would really be much of that right now with it being Christmas Eve and all. Everyone would already be at home with their families or crowding into shopping centres in search of one more last minute gift.
Swivelling in his office chair the raven looked out at the always bustling city of New York, wishing that he were somewhere else right now, wishing that he was with his family. As the head of the American division of Uchiha Industries there was no doubt that he had a good life even if he was always under stress because of it and often missed out on opportunities to see his family, mostly by his own choice. At twenty four years of age many thought that he was too young for the position and though there were times like this when even he questioned himself, Sasuke would not buckle to the pressure of his peers and position. This was the first opportunity he had ever been given that his father hadn’t considered Itachi for first and as such he was determined not to let the man down no matter what he had to give up. The company came before all else. That was why, instead of being on a plane back to Japan to celebrate the season with his family, he was sitting here, in his office, alone. Groaning Sasuke finally got out of his chair, deciding he had had enough of his personal self-pity party. The raven grabbed his suit jacket off the back of his chair, shrugging it on as he quickly checked his files and paper work over one last time to make sure everything was in order before grabbing his briefcase that was packed full of work he had yet to finish and leaving the plush office, heading to the elevators, his escape. However when Sasuke got to elevator the raven was a little shocked to see that maybe he wasn’t as alone at work as he thought he had been. Standing there waiting for the glistening sliver doors to open was a young blonde man, maybe Sasuke’s age. He was dressed in a well-tailored, if slightly rumpled grey suit with his tie already hanging at half mast, the dark blue silk seeming to make the man’s already cerulean blue eyes all the more vibrantly coloured. He had a worn bright orange backpack slung over one shoulder and was gently bouncing up and down as he waited. Stepping up next to the man Sasuke wondered why he couldn’t recall seeing the other around before but then again he didn’t exactly fraternise with his employees. Still he thought that, that shocking mop of hair and startling blue eyes would have certainly been something he would have remembered if he had seen them before. The raven was broken out of his scrutinizing as the elevator doors slide open with a soft ding, annoying music flooding into the quiet hall and reception area. Both men stepped into the lift, taking up opposite sides of the small space that only got smaller still as the door slid closed again and the slow decent from the top floor began. The tune playing was annoyingly monotonous and Sasuke felt a head ache coming on just from listening to it for a few moment and during his boredom he felt his eyes drifting to the little screen above the door that counted down the floor numbers. He knew watching the floors pass wouldn’t make the trip go any faster, in fact it was likely to make it feel as if it went longer but he had nothing else to occupy his mind at the moment after accidentally leaving his phone at home that morning. It was times like this that having Facebook on his mobile was more a help then a distracting hindrance. That’s how he knew that when the lift shuddered and the lights flickered out that he and the other man freaking out next to him were trapped somewhere between the twenty fourth and twenty fifth floors. “Shit, shit, shit,” the constant string of curses coming from the other occupant of the elevator told the raven that his companion was somewhere off to his right, most likely fiddling with the panel of buttons, searching for the emergency phone button in the pitch black darkness that had suddenly enveloped them that would hopefully connect them to the front desk. However after a few minutes of feverish button pushing and more curses it was becoming obvious that either the emergency phone at the front desk wasn’t working or that everyone else in the building had already headed home. Sasuke growled quietly at that last thought. If there was no one left in the building then how would anyone else know they were trapped in here and that meant there wasn’t anyone to help them if they were the only ones left. If only he hadn’t forgotten his mobile phone this morning. Sasuke blinked in the darkness as a thought popped into his head and he face palmed, he wasn’t the only one in the elevator and certainly wasn’t the only one in the universe who owned a phone. “Calm down and shut up for a second would you, freaking out won’t help us,” Sasuke grumbled to the other man and rubbed at his temples in an attempt to make his now vicious headache abate, thankful that the blonde listened to him and finally stopped swearing, “do you have a mobile on you, we can use that to call for help.” The other man let out a little cheer and the sounds of rustling fabric quickly filled the small space meaning he was either checking his pockets or this heinously coloured back pack for his phone. Sasuke waited patiently for the first few moments, hoping to hear and over exaggerated cheer of success from his companion but was disappointed when the cursing started up again. “Damn it, I can’t find my phone anywhere,” the blonde said, frustration and a hint of fear lacing his voice, “I must have left it on my desk when I left . What the hell do we do now?” Sasuke sighed and felt his way over to the left hand wall, sitting down when he finally reached it and staring into the dark, “we wait, what else is there.” “I don’t know, maybe we could try forcing the doors open or climbing down the elevator shaft like they do in the movies?” Hope. It was there mixed in with the deep tones of the other man’s voice but it was only small so the raven didn’t feel too bad crushing it, “firstly we are not climbing down the elevator shaft since we’re somewhere in between the twenty four and twenty fifth floors and secondly it would take at least two other people to force open that door.” “So we just sit here and wait for someone to come find us, that could be days away,” Sasuke could practically see the other man throwing his arms up in exasperation at the thought and then he blinked when he realised he really could see the other man, who was now, just like him, looking around the small space, trying to ascertain where the muted light was coming from. “Emergency lighting,” Sasuke explained to the other man who gave him an adorably confused look and that only served to aggravate the Uchiha further, pointing to the wall behind the man , “there on the floor.” The blonde turned to see what the other had been talking about and sure enough there was a tiny string of lights running along the ground and roof of the wall behind him. It wasn’t much but the blonde smiled, at least he could see now. Sasuke watched as the blonde smiled at the simple lighting and felt his heart flutter a little at the sight. His companion was certainly attractive in any right but his smile was dazzling. As the man mimicked his position on the opposite wall Sasuke wondered what it would feel like to have that smile focused on him, sure that the emergency lights seemed just that little bit brighter after the blonde had smiled at them. Sighing heavily Sasuke clicked open his brief case and began pulling out some of the papers he was going to go through when he got home, sliding on a pair of reading glasses as he did so. Normally he never wore them, hating the way he looked in them and the fact that he was constantly being forced to push them up his nose at the most awkward of times but right now the annoyingly low light called for the simple black framed glasses. He didn’t want to be stuck reading the same line over and over again or misinterpreting words. That would just make all of his hard work useless. However it turned out that he didn’t have to worry about that since it seemed his companion was not a friend of silence, tapping his foot on the wooden floor and clicking his tongue for about ten minutes before finally turning his attention to the Uchiha, “you’re working? Now?” Sasuke glanced up from his papers for a second before looking down again reading as he talked, “I'm trapped in an elevator that’s dangling hundreds of meters from the ground with a stranger and god only knows when someone is going to come to the rescue us. What else am I supposed to do other than what I was going to do when I got home?” “But it’s Christmas Eve, no one works on Christmas Eve,” again that smile but Sasuke could see that it was forced this time, maybe Christmas was as hard a time for the blonde as it was for him, at least this year anyway. “If no one works on Christmas Eve then what are you doing here?” Sasuke asked pointedly, pushing away the thought that he and this stranger might have something in common in order to point out his flawed logic. Sasuke watched as the blonde opened and closed his mouth a few times, searching for an answer before he put a hand behind his head and he gave a sheepish grin, “yeah I guess your right about that,” the blonde shifted to Sasuke's side of the elevator and held out a tanned hand, “I'm Naruto by the way, Naruto Uzumaki.” Sasuke regarded the offered hand for a moment as he thought over the blonde’s name, trying to place it somewhere but he just couldn’t remember ever seeing the blonde or hearing his name before. It unnerved the Uchiha that there was someone working this high up in the company’s ladder and he was completely unknown to him. What if this man didn’t even work for his company, what if he was an imposter. It wouldn’t have been the first time that a rival company had sent someone to have a poke around to try and see where the company was headed and maybe steal a few ideas while they were at it. But if that was the case then why would the man openly introduce himself, wouldn’t he be doing everything humanly possible to keep his identity a secret? Sasuke sighed as his brain began to run in circles, the confined space was already starting to get to him and he hadn’t even been stuck in it for a half hour yet. Breaking out of his cycle of thoughts Sasuke went to shake the others had to find that it had been removed and the blonde had returned to the other side of the elevator, a sour look on his face as he stared hard at the door as if he could will the cold steal to open for him. Sasuke blinked at Naruto, how long had he been sitting there thinking for? Clearly long enough for his companion to think he was too stuck up to introduce himself if the look on his tanned face was anything to go by. Sasuke cleared his throat, “I'm Sasuke Uchiha.” There was no reaction for a moment and Sasuke growled quietly, annoyed that the other had the nerve to think he could ignore him but then he noticed that Naruto’s entire posture had stiffened. It was if he were preparing for a physical blow. The blonde turned to face him and blinked his large blue eyes for a moment before squeaking out a question, “You’re Sasuke Uchiha?” Sasuke pushed his glasses back up his nose and nodded, not sure why the blonde was suddenly so pale under his tan. He was a well-known figure even if he rarely ventured out of his office during work hours. He’d been in magazines and on the television more times than he had fingers and toes to count on. Surely the blonde had already recognised him or at least had some suspicions about who he was trapped with. Naruto clapped his hands in front of him as if he were praying and bowed his head to the man across from him, “I am so SOOOO sorry Mr. Uchiha. Please forgive me?” “F-forgive you? For what?” “For getting you stuck in this elevator and making you late for or miss whatever you were planning to do on Christmas Eve,” Naruto looked like he was about to flatten himself to the ground in some form of apologetic bow, “please don’t fire me, I really like this job.” Sasuke knew he looked silly sitting there blinking at Naruto like an owl with his glasses about to completely fall off of his nose but he really couldn’t understand what the blonde was blabbering about, “umm I'm not sure I understand what you’re talking about. Why would I fire you? And why on earth would you apologise for what happened to the elevator, its not like you had anything to do with it.” “w-well I know that, “ Naruto said lifting his head and looking at Sasuke, “but I’ve heard so many terrible stories about you and just seems like every time I go past your office your always yelling at someone about one thing or another. That’s also why I didn’t recognise you to start off with, I try to avoid your office at all costs.” “I only yell at people who can’t do their jobs properly,” Sasuke mumbled, finally finding his composure, “and I was wondering why I didn’t recognise you as one of my employees. If you’ve managed to avoid my office so well that I don’t even know you then you must do your job properly. Come to think of it what exactly do you do here?” “Oh umm I'm Karin’s assistant,” Naruto said with a sheepish grin, “the job is pretty easy most of the time but sometimes it bugs me. Karin can be a horrible boss.” Sasuke smirked at that, he knew just how horrible and not to mention annoying Karin could be sometimes. If she wasn’t the best personal assistant he had ever met he would put the girl out of her job in an instant, “actually now that you mention it I do recall her telling me that she’d hired someone to help her out, apparently managing my life is far more difficult then I first thought.” Naruto smiled, “well it would be easier to manage your life if you took some time off once in a while. Well that and if Karin didn’t cut corners all the time and make me come in and fix her mistakes for her,” Naruto clapped his hands over his mouth when he realised what he said, “please don’t tell her I said that, she’ll fire me and I really didn’t mean to dob on her. She does her job well enough and if she did it any better there probably wouldn’t be any need for me.” Sasuke watched as Naruto went back and forth from dobbing Karin in for not doing her job properly to defending her work, making himself more and more flustered as he did so until he was red in the face and stuttering. He really is quite amusing, the Uchiha thought absentmindedly as Naruto began to calm down, pulling his already loosened tie all the way off in a vain attempt to get more air, I should still keep an eye on him though, what with the way he acted when he realised we were trapped and now this. I think he might be just a tad claustrophobic, it’s probably starting to get to him just like me. “You don’t need to worry yourself Naruto, “ Sasuke said as he went back to his papers, “I have no plans to fire anyone as long as all my affairs are kept as well ordered as they are now. Only if I see either yours or Karin’s work slipping will you have to worry about that.” “It won’t, I promise,” Naruto almost shouted, still a little flustered. Taking off his backpack Naruto grabbed a water bottle from inside, glad that he had been planning to head to the gym after work. At least he and Sasuke were well stocked with water and if he remembered correctly there were a few energy bars somewhere in the bag as well. Naruto tossed a bottle of water to Sasuke who jumped slightly and looked up from his paper work, a little startled by the fact that a water bottle had just appeared in his lap, “t-thank you.” Naruto grinned from the other side of the elevator as he shrugged off his suit jacket and rolled it into a pillow so he could lay down, “don’t mention it. I’ve got a couple of energy bars too if you’re hungry? I was headed to the gym after work so I’ve got a bunch of water and stuff, thank god.” “No I'm fine thank you, “ Sasuke replied, glad that he hadn’t decided to skip lunch like he usually did, “we should probably save them, who knows when we’ll be rescued. Most likely the day after Christmas if I had to hazard a guess.” Naruto took a deep breath to try and calm himself down, not wanting to think about the fact that he could be trapped in such a confined space hanging hundreds of meters from the ground for almost two days. I can’t get worked up, I don’t have enough medication with me to handle more than one attack, Naruto cursed his bad luck, taking a small peek in his bag to see the almost empty orange bottle of anxiety medication, glad that he had at least remembered that before he left his apartment that morning. “Can we please not talk about how long we’re going to be trapped in here,” Naruto tried to keep his voice from sounding like he was pleading but he knew he didn’t completely succeed. “Well what would you rather talk about then,” Sasuke said as he put aside his paperwork, knowing that the blonde across from him would most likely calm down faster if he had something mindless like a conversation to distracting him. “Why are you here at the office on Christmas Eve instead of out somewhere spending time with your family, “ Naruto asked as he rolled onto his side so he could see the raven better and punched his makeshift pillow to try and get more comfortable, “are you really that bad of a workaholic?” “It’s not that I'm a workaholic, if I could be with my family right now I would be without a second thought,” Sasuke explained as he took off his glasses and put them away, intending to get just as comfortable as Naruto, “I just want my father to think that he made the right choice choosing me to head this branch of the company instead of my brother. If it means missing out on spending the holidays with my family to do that then that’s what I’ll do. What about you, you already said you were headed to the gym after this. Why not just go and spend time with your family?” “Well I would if I had any family.” Sasuke immediately felt guilty for asking the question, not wanting to bring up something that may or may not be painful for the blonde to remember and tried to hide it but Naruto saw the flash of emotion pass across his pale features and offered him a small smile, “You don’t have to feel bad Mr. Uchiha, it happened a long time ago and I’ve made my peace with it. Besides I have friends that are as close as any family could ever be.” Naruto bit his lip, not sure if what he was about to say would really be permitted or not but he figured that with the situation they were in some lines could be a little blurred, “you know I don’t think that your father would mind if you took some time off to visit him and the rest of your family. I’ve heard some stuff about your dad; he seems like a pretty smart man so I think he already knows that he made the right decision. I don’t think you need to waste all your time and energy proving to him something he already knows.” The small space was filled with silence for a moment and Naruto thought that he may really have just stepped way out of line. He didn’t know Sasuke or anything about his relationship with his father. For all he knew the raven’s deep need to make his father proud of him may stem from having a horrible relationship with him in the past. “t-thankyou Naruto,” Sasuke said, relieving the blondes apprehension and causing a toothy grin to split his face, “and I am sorry about your parents, even if you don’t believe I have to say it,” Sasuke added quietly as he took off his own tie and folded it neatly before setting it aside to be quickly joined by his jacket, “also I don’t think this is an incredibly formal situation so you can call me Sasuke if you like. I won’t mind.” “You know what, if we get out of here sooner rather than later you might be able to grab a last minute flight home,” Naruto suggested feeling a little jolt of glee pass through him at being allowed to call his boss by his first name, “besides in my opinion you really need to take some time off, your life wouldn’t be so hard to manage if you just took some time off now and then and I bet you wouldn’t be so angry all the time either.” Sasuke chuckled softly as he lay down and stared up at the shiny metal roof above him, his reflection oddly distorted, all the while considering what Naruto had said. Would it really be so bad if he took a little time off? The company was doing well; it was established now and was running as smoothly as anyone could have hoped for. He had a capable team surrounding him that knew how to do their jobs, even if some of them forgot sometimes and he had to drag them back into line or pull them into his office for a little chat. Besides if Sasuke was really honest with himself he had to admit that he was craving some time off. It would be nice to go home and see his family, especially his mother who he knew constantly fretted about him being so far away from home with not close friends or family nearby to support him if he needed it. He wanted more than anything to put his mother’s worries at ease and he knew that if he went home she would spoil him rotten, regardless of what his father said. He may be grown now but in his mother’s eyes Sasuke would always be her baby boy. Sasuke had to admit that sometimes the coddling annoyed him but he would never take the simple pleasure away from the woman who raised him, Mikoto was such a gentle loving woman and took joy in simply being a mother to her sons and a wife to her husband. Telling his mother that something she did for him was sometimes annoying was not an option for the youngest Uchiha, he would never take something she enjoyed from the woman who raised him and never wanted to see her chest fallen by his hands. I suppose if I took some time off for myself to get my life sorted out here that would make her feel better, Sasuke thought, recalling the fact that he hadn’t had a single day off since moving to America, if I took time off I could maybe make some friends or something, show her that I do have some form of support network here should I ever need it. Naruto yawned suddenly and broke Sasuke out of his thoughts about his worrisome mother and he looked over to see the blonde stretching his length out across the floor until he was nearly touching both sides of the elevator. “Hey wake me up when we’ve been rescued alright?” Sasuke couldn’t help but smile as the blonde covered himself as well as he could with his jacket and covered his electric blue eyes with his tie to block out the dim emergency lighting. “Sure thing,” Sasuke replied as he watched the blondes breathing even out before checking his watch and noticing they’d been trapped together for a little over an hour. Slightly put off by the fact that time was seeming to drag the Uchiha rolled onto his stomach and took out his work again, leaning it against his brief case as he put his glasses back on. If Naruto was going to while away the hours with sleep then he would do the same with work and hopefully by the time they were both done someone would be there to save them. A/N: This will probably only be a small fiction, most likely something to distract myself when I get stuck with my other works. I'm aiming for about three or four chapters and hopefully I won’t go too far over that limit I’ve set for myself. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
