This plot bunny has been annoying me half to death so I decided to hash out the first chapter and see how it goes.
*** Gaara stared at the screens biting his lip as timetables flickered back and forth, his green eyes wide as he tried to understand the constantly changing system. He had spent half an hour trying to understand the timetables in the booklet he had clutched in his fist but had given up on it when the destinations and times began to blur together with his slowly increasing headache and had then started his futile attempt to understand the display on the screens. “Hey are you alright there, you look a little lost,” Gaara jumped at the sound of an unfamiliar voice and turned startled eyes to it owner only to become lost in the deep cerulean orbs of the other person his intended reply of I'm fine died in his throat. The stranger was a male, about his age, maybe a year or two older with caramel skin and a crazy mop of blonde shaggy hair. Three distinct parallel scars ran down both sides of his cheeks like whiskers and Gaara found himself wanting to reach out and touch them to see if they really were scars or just something the man was gifted with at birth. He was taller than him and though he was dressed in the night uniform of the train stations security he could still make out the slightly muscled physique that came from more than a little casual working out. Another thing that attracted the redheads gaze was the man’s smile. It was absolutely dazzling in the fact that it wasn’t cold and practiced like every other worker here. It was all straight white teeth and sincerity. The man frowned and Gaara blinked himself out of his daze, realising that he had been staring for a while and should probably answer before his saviour decided he wasn’t worth the trouble, “um…umm…I don’t really know-“ Gaara was cut off as the man chuckled and shuffled a little closer so he could look at the timetable he held open in his hands, “where was it you wanted to go, I can probably direct you.” The redhead flipped through a few pages of his little schedule book before he came across a page sporting many scribbles and highlighted areas that were his older sisters attempts to make his schedule easier to understand and he groaned at what he saw there. How had she managed to forget to show him something so important when she had been running him through it before he left this morning? “Pretty,” the blonde remarked as looked at all the bright pink highlighter littering the page. He then noticed a group of large exclamation marks next to a final departure time and it clicked with him that that was the reason why the other had just become so dejected, “Oh, I see.” Gaara bit his lip and flicked the page over searching, “When does the next one come?” The security guard reached over and pointed to the next departure time available, not wanting to voice the fact that the lost traveller had to wait until 7am for the next train to Olympic Park and since it was only just hitting 1am he had a lot of time to wait, “is there someone you can call to come and get you?” “I guess I can maybe call my brother,” Gaara said, praying that his brother Kankuro would still be awake and willing to come and get him, “is there a pay phone somewhere close that I can use?” The blonde smile, showing off his perfect white teeth again, “You can use the phone in the security guards office if you want, it’s this way,” he headed off in the direction he had pointed and Gaara gathered his belongings at his feet and hurried after him, his feet echoing eerily on the marble floor of the empty station. The guard station wasn’t all that special, It was really just a room set off in the corner with half a wall of televisions with images from different areas of the station in grainy black and white, There was a small desk set up in one of the far corners with an old computer and a telephone, there were also a few junk food wrappers strewn around it that Gaara guessed came from the vending machine just outside. The only other thing in the room was a beat-up leather two seater that was currently occupied by another security guard who was sprawled out on his back asleep, his greyish white hair fanned out around him. The blonde security guard’s gaze fell on his sleeping colleague and for a moment Gaara was waiting for him to get angry about the other neglecting their duties but those deep blue eyes instantly softened at the sight, “Poor Kimimaro, he’s been so bloody sick lately and its really starting to take its toll on him,” the blonde walked over to the desk and picked up the receiver, holing it out the a silent Gaara, “all you have to do is press zero then that hash button to put a call out.” “T-thanks a lot,” Gaara shuffled across the room with his arms full and went to take the phone before he realised he didn’t have free hand. The blonde tried to hold in his laughter as he took some of the things from Gaara and cleared a space on the desk for them but when his face started going red and his eyes got watery he lost it, not being strong enough to hold it in, “I…I'm sorry, y-you just looked so confused, a-and so…cute!” Gaara didn’t want to admit that he found himself smiling with the strange security guard instead of being offended like he should have or absolutely impassive like he normally was with strangers and he had to take a few deep breath before dialling the phone, knowing that his brother would ask questions if he seemed even remotely happy. He would worry that something was wrong and as he listened to the dial tone the redhead watched the two security guards interact out of the corner of his eye, trying not to intrude. The blonde knelt down beside the couch and gently shook the other man’s shoulders, “hey Kimi, come on and wake up,” the sleeping man grumbled for a moment before his eyes opened slowly to look up at the other in confusion, “you fell asleep again, why don’t you go home and get some rest. We’re quiet tonight since it’s not a weekend or anything and you know I can handle myself.” The older man opened his mouth to reply but before he could utter a word he was over taken by a violent fit of coughing. The blonde helped him sit up before grabbing a backpack from beside the couch and digging out as bottle of water from somewhere in its depths. Once the coughing had settled enough that he could breathe around it Kimimaro took the bottle with a watery eyed smile and drank half of it. “Hello?” Gaara jumped slightly when someone picked up the phone, his brothers sleep deprived voice grumbling through the speaker, “Hey Kankuro I kind of have a problem.” “Problem? Are you alright?” “Yeah but I’m kind of st-stuck at the train station. Temari didn’t tell me that the last train I could catch home leaves as 11:30pm. C-could you come get me?” Gaara heard the jingling of car keys on the other end of the line and the faint rustling of clothes as his brother moved about. “You’re lucky dad has dumped me with so much work and that I'm still stuck at the office.” “I know, I'm sorry Kankuro,” Gaara hung his head and scuffed his shoe against the worn grey carpet, unaware of the two pairs of eyes watching him. “It’s okay kid, try not to sound like a kicked puppy okay? Besides, you’re giving me an excuse to go home early. Where are you?” “I- I'm in the security guards office at Central Station.” “Well just stay there, its late and Temari will beat me to a pulp if anything happens to you,” Gaara heard the thunk of a car door, “I’ll see you soon, just sit tight and stay where the guards can see you.” The phone went dead in the redheads hand; he guessed that his older brother didn’t want to hear his thankyous. He put the receiver down and turned back to the pair on the couch who quickly averted their eyes as an awkward silence settled over the room, making it seem even smaller. “Well I guess I’ll go out and do some rounds,” Kimimaro said, his voice still raspy from coughing, “your welcome to stay in here until someone comes and gets you since it’s heated.” “Hey wait a second I thought you were going to go home and rest,” the blonde said, reaching out to take Kimimaro’s arm as he stood up. Kimimaro looked down at the younger man affectionately, “you know I can’t do that Naruto, there has to be a senior security member on at all times and we’re short staffed tonight as it is,” he gently removed himself from Naruto’s worried grasp then reached up to ruffle his already messy hair, “if anything happens I’ll contact you over the walky-talky straight away. Try not to stress too much or you’ll be the one that needs to go home.” “Yeah okay,” the blonde said with a little pout, “I’ll stalk you using the security cameras and keep an eye on you to.” Kimimaro just nodded before leaving the small room, giving Gaara a quick wave as he went and closing the door behind him. Gaara’s eyes were trained on the door for a minute before he made an attempt at conversation, “is he going to be okay?” “Yeah Kimi will be fine, he can take care of himself, regardless of what I think. He’s been a security guard at this station for a while,” Naruto said as he ran a hand through his hair in an attempt to tame it before getting up and fiddling with the compute for a second, glancing between it and the screens and the screens on the wall until Kimimaro popped up on one of them, “can’t be too careful though.” Gaara just nodded, thinking that it must be nice to have someone always watching out for you like that. “So are you an art student or something?” Gaara looked at the blonde to see that he was staring at the things he had placed on the desk before calling his brother, his new sketch book hanging dangerously of the corners and a few charcoal pencils having fallen out of his open backpack. “Um, yeah I guess so,” Gaara mumbled as he stuffed the pencils back inside the pack and straightened the book a little so it wouldn’t fall, “I just moved to the city to attend a school here, there really big on the arts and stuff, I’ve wanted to go for a while.” “So you’ve never lived in the city before? Must be hard getting used to.” “Yes and no, I lived here when I was younger but I always had my older brother and sister to help me when it came to traveling around. My father sent me to a boarding school a few years ago but now that I'm back I have to do all of those things myself,” a small smile played on the redhead’s lips, “my brother says that it’s like riding a bike and I’ll get the hang of it again eventually. This is the third time I’ve called him this week.” “But it’s only Tuesday,” Naruto said while trying to hold back a little laughter. “Yes I know,” Gaara said with a sigh and fiddled with one of the buttons on his jacket, “the train system is a lot different to what I remember it being and somehow the city seems so much larger form when I was little which doesn’t seem fair to me since I’m bigger now.” Naruto clapped a friendly hand onto the redhead shoulder, “don’t worry about it too much, you’ll get the hand of it eventually. Everyone does, “the blonde blinked for a second and his brows furrowed in confusion as if something important had just occurred to him. Shaking his head the tanned blonde extended his hand, “I'm Naruto by the way, Naruto Uzumaki. I normally have a security identification tag around my neck to let people know who I am but it got caught in the office door before I started my shift tonight and I nearly strangled myself to death before it broke.” Gaara’s own brow creased as he tried to imagine how the man in front of him and managed that and he took the offered hand, giving it a quick uncertain shake before pulling away, “Gaara no Sabaku.” “Well it’s nice to meet you Gaara,” the blonde smiled, “even if it’s not under the best of circumstances.” “I-it’s nice to meet you to Naruto,” Gaara picked up his new sketch book, “do you mind if I sit and draw while I wait for my brother to come and get me.” “Yeah of course go ahead. My security office is your security office,” Naruto sat down at the computer and pulled up a program that Gaara didn’t recognise, “I suppose this gives me a chance to catch up on some of my own work.” Gaara settled himself on the old couch and stared at the clean white page before him as he tried to clear his mind of the stress of the day and let it wander. It had been such a horrible day, his first back in Sydney since he was eleven years old and though it hadn’t changed all that much the place still seemed alien to him after living in a town that had less than a thousand people, with about three hundred of those being students at his boarding school. It had been quiet there and though he had missed his family and always dreamed of going to Konoha school of Art, Design and Technologies he had been happy there and at peace. But then he had shown an interest and things had gone downhill from there. It had been fantastic to start off with, everything he expected his first love to be and more but unfortunately he hadn’t seen it consuming him until those close to him had pointed out his failing grades and that he was neglecting the others around him. Then when he had begun to question his relationship the blanket created by his first love had been pulled from his eyes and everything had fallen apart. He wasn’t loved or cherished; he was just a pretty little thing to be had in the back halls of the school and in the middle of the night when no one was looking. His boyfriend hadn’t cared for him enough to make their relationship public, he cared more about his name and his status among his family than he did about the way Gaara had felt. “Hey that’s really good,” Gaara blinked himself back to the real world and looked up at Naruto who was standing at his side at one of the vending machines, looking down at the book in his lap, “is that someone you know?” Gaara moved his own jade green eyes back to the blank page and found that it wasn’t blank anymore. The charcoal lines were harsh against the stark white page, outlining the profile of a beautiful young man with long hair and cold eyes. In his distraction Gaara had drawn the one that had hurt him the most, the one that had pulled him apart so badly that he was only just now, almost two months later, rebuilding himself. Gaara ripped the page out of the book before scrunching it into a ball and putting it in his bag, “no, I thought I knew them but I was wrong.” “That’s too bad; I thought it was really good. Better than I could ever do that’s for sure.” Naruto went back to the vending machine then, trying to act as if he were highly engrossed in his decision of which junk food to purchase but his attention was really on the boy sitting on the couch, staring broodingly at the new page of his sketch book, the charcoal pencil he held resting against the page, waiting to create art. The boy was quiet and nervous, kind of like the wild animals that come up to you in the park sometimes, sniffing around and trusting you enough to let you feed it but always ready to run if it had to. He was different though and Naruto found that he liked that about him. He’d never seen anyone with hair so red it looked like blood before and the colour was only made more amazing by the others pale skin and jade eyes. There was also the Japanese symbol tattooed on his forehead to consider, again something the blonde had never seen before. He supposed he got it though, why the redhead was so nervous both now and probably all the time. He wasn’t much really, didn’t look like he could defend himself all that well and with the way he looked Naruto guessed that he probably got picked on more often than not. Beauty with no confidence, that’s a new one even for me and I’ve seen most, Naruto thought as he returned to his desk with a chocolate bar handing from his mouth, his family shouldn’t have thrown him into the city with just a train guide for help, not when he hasn’t been here for years. People get lost and hurt that way all the time, especially people like him. A movement on the one of the security screens caught his eye and he watched a man draped in a heavy coat approach Kimimaro as he chewed wholeheartedly on his sugary snack. He was a little bit concerned at first but then he saw his friend pointing and smiling and figured it was just another lost person looking for help and direction. Seeing where Kimi was pointing Naruto swivelled in his chair to where the red head was scribbling furiously, “hey I think someone is here to get you, I just saw Kimi giving directions to some guy and he’s heading this way now,” Gaara looked up and rubbed his tired eyes, smudging a little bit of charcoal under the left one before putting the sketch book aside and walking over to stare at the same security screen as Naruto who was squinting at the image, “is he wearing eyeliner?” “Yeah that’s Kankuro,” Gaara mumbled, “I suppose I should go out and meet him. And yes that is eyeliner. My father runs a large entertainment company here in the city and my brother is the vice president so he’s a bit…strange.” “To each his own I guess,” Naruto said with a shrug as he leaned back in the chair, watching Gaara move silently around the room and grab his things and put them back in his bag, “try not to get stuck here again okay, or anywhere else for that matter. I'm not at every station you know.” Gaara gave a small smile at the blondes teasing as he hoisted his backpack onto his shoulders and tucked his sketch book under his arm, “thank you for helping me, I would have been lost without you.” “Its fine, don’t hesitate to ask next time you need help okay,” Naruto tilted his head and watched Gaara leave the office, giving him a small wave over his shoulder as he went. Naruto watched the boy in the security cameras after he left the room, making sure he got to his brother okay and that the two of them left the station safely before relaxing and eating the rest of his chocolate bar, praying that the sugar would keep him awake for the rest of his night shift and the day to come after. *** “Everyone this is Gaara no Sabaku,” Iruka said to the various art students that were meandering around the room talking and working on their various projects gesturing to Gaara as he got their attention, “since he’s new I'm going to need someone to show him around the school and introducing him to the different faculty members and other students.” “Does it mean I get out of class for the day?” a boy with short black hair said, his loose black t-shirt covered in bright pink paint rather than the white dress shirt of the schools uniform. “Well yes Sai I suppose it does,” Iruka said with a large smile as he scratched at a scar running across his nose, “I’ve already showed him around the art department which means you just have to show him the other three departments and explain those to him.” Sai walked over to Iruka and Gaara whipping his hands on paint covered cloth before reaching out his hand for Gaara to shake, “Hi I'm Sai, you can leave your things in here if you want while I show you around.” “Umm sure okay,” Gaara tried to smile at the other teen but his nervousness of his first day and being surrounded by so many new people was overriding everything else. He had already forgotten everything Iruka had told him that morning about the art department and he could see himself forgetting everything Sai would as well. “we’ve got a room where we keep all our junk during and in between classes,” Sai said as he motioned for Gaara to follow him into a smaller rom that was behind a large sliding door, “Iruka is the only one with a key but he’s here all the time so you don’t have to worry about never being able to get your stuff,” Sai pushed aside some bags on the floor and made a little space in the corner before pointing to a pile next to it, “that’s my stuff there so just chuck yours next to it and we’ll get going.” Gaara shuffled over to the space Sai had cleared and put his things down before following the waiting boy out of the room, trying to listen to what he was saying to him, “So where do you wanna go to first?” “Anywhere I guess, I’ve read all about this school on the net and I'm happy to see anything really,” Gaara ran his hand through his hair as he trotted along after Sai who started off in a random direction, “so where are we going.” “We’re heading to the auto shop first since i need to go there anyway. It’s in the construction department but we generally just call the place Shop. Wood technology and metal work classes are held in that area but by the looks of you I don’t really think you take any of those classes,” Sai looked over his shoulder to se Gaara shaking his head, “a lot of the sculptors keep their work their too since there’s more room for them, do you sculpt?” “A little but nothing to spectacular, mostly just clay,” Gaara admitted as he looked around, trying to remember the route they were taking. “If you don’t think clay can be spectacular I can’t wait until you meet Deidara, his work will most definitely change your opinion,” Sai smiled as he thought about the crazy assistant teacher, classes were certainly interesting when he was there, “What classes are you taking anyway?” “Other than the compulsory English classes I'm mainly just taking art classes, a bit of graphic design here and there but I really just want to draw,” Gaara smiled softly, “do people normally take more than one type of class here, am I weird?” “Everyone who goes to this school is weird in their own way,” Sai said with a creepy smile that Gaara thought was a little to practiced for his liking, “so you’ll fit right in.” The pair fell silent then and it gave Gaara a chance to focus on the school around him. It was just as nice as it looked in the images he had seen on their website. All of the buildings he had seen so far where made of an old red brick and they were generally just big rooms, hollowed out to suit their various purposes, like the art rooms he had seen filled with canvases and chairs rather than the usual wall to wall of desks and what desks there were, were covered in paint stains and drawings, some years old while others were fresh. And in every available corner there was life. Trees, flowers and other plants that Gaara couldn’t even think to name. It was like someone had gone crazy in a nursery, deciding that there must be some form of greenery every twenty meters. There were also students everywhere which as something the redhead didn’t understand, “Sai shouldn’t the students be in class, wont they get in trouble?” “Hmm? No not really, as long as you report at the end of each class and show that you’ve actually done some work most of the teachers don’t mind if you go somewhere else to do it. Not everyone thinks their best couped up in a stuffy class room,” Sai noticed that Gaara’s eyes were a little wide as he took in what he was saying and their surroundings, “are you alright?” “Yes I'm fine; it’s just that this place is so…different to every other school I’ve been to,” Gaara admitted, “I'm a little overwhelmed. Sai offered him a real smile then, “don’t worry you’ll get used to it, everyone does.” Gaara blinked at the taller teen for a second before continuing on beside him. That was the second time someone had said that to him in less than twenty-four hours. Maybe they were right? “So what other schools have you been to?” Gaara bit his lip, not really wanting to discuss his past with someone he had only just met but he supposed that he had really brought the question upon himself and the curiosity seemed harmless enough on Sai’s part, “I went to a boarding school before this and a private school before that as well as in home tutoring when I was younger.” “I was home schooled for ages,” Sai offered, “but my parents noticed that, without the interaction I would have gotten from other kids my age in a school environment, I was becoming really closed off and wasn’t getting all the human experiences I needed in life to be normal. That’s when they sent me here.” “And are you now, normal I mean?” Gaara asked seriously looking at the boy he was trusting to lead him in his new environment. Sai smirked at him before directing a pointed look toward the tattoo on his forehead, “that depends on what you classify as normal.” Gaara pursed his lips and silently berated himself for attempting to question the others normalcy. Sai was right, who was he to decide what was weird or not when he himself was far from perfect or normal? Silence settled between the two then and Gaara wouldn’t have minded so much if he wasn’t so worried that he’d offended the other in some way without even trying. The last thing he wanted was to make an enemy of someone on his first day, that was not something he needed and most definitely the last thing he wanted. Sai however seemed completely oblivious of the smaller boys discomfort; either that or he just didn’t care as he continued to lead then through the school until they were stopped by an older man with silver hair that defied gravity in various angles. “Hey there Sai, who is this with you,” The man asked as he adjusted his extremely high turtle neck sweater that covered the entire bottom of his face. Gaara narrowed his eyes slightly, the man was strange and he hadn’t even gotten to the fact that he was wearing an eye patch. “Oh this is Gaara, he a new student and Iruka asked me to show him around for the day,” Sai motioned to the older man as he introduced him to Gaara, this is Kakashi Hatake, he’s the head of the automotive department here at the school but he also teaches some art classes to, most of them in sculpting.” Kakashi held out his hand for Gaara to shake and he took it, his own hand being complexly dwarfed by the other mans, “it’s nice to meet you Mr. Hatake.” The cloth around the man’s mouth crinkled and Gaara thought that he might be smiling beneath it, “please just call me Kakashi, all my other students do,” Kakashi released his hand and turned his attention back to Sai, “so where were you guys going?” “I was just going to take him to the automotive department and show him around, I also have something to discuss with Kiba about the designs and colour schemes for his car, and I need to make some adjustments for them to work with the new body kit he’s planning on installing.” “Well you had better get going then, would you mind telling everyone I'm going to be a little late this morning, the Principle wants to talk to me about something,” Kakashi tried to smooth his hair down as if trying to make himself presentable for his upcoming meeting, “can’t imagine what she wants to talk to me about though.” “Probably has something to do with you always being late,” Sai mused, “or maybe it has something to do with the amount of life sculpting classes you’ve holding, or maybe just the fact that you made Iruka model for the last one.” Gaara thought that Kakashi must have winced then but he couldn’t be sure with half of the man’s face, “yeah that’s probably it since Tsunade gave up on the battle about my lateness almost three years ago when she realised it was a lost cause. Maybe tell my class that I won’t be there at all today, there might be an impromptu trip to the emergency room coming up for me.” Sai snickered, “well from the look I saw you giving Iruka while we were in class that day I'm going to guess that a trip to the emergency room was worth it?” “We’ll see how I feel about that after I’ve talked with Tsunade, see you guys later,” Kakashi waved to the two boys as he walked off in the direction off the main office building. “Good luck,” Sai called after him before smiling down at Gaara, “Kakashi is one of my favourite teachers, I don’t have him for many classes but his skills as a teacher command a certain respect from everyone, myself included.” Gaara blinked his large green eyes at Sai’s confession in surprise; the other teen really did seem like someone who could be impressed by anyone or anything at all let alone an apparently constantly late and seemingly perverted teacher. But again Sai was oblivious to Gaara’s reaction as he continued on his way without word, expecting the redhead to follow him and he did, trailing after him like a lost little puppy with his eyes on the ground. As such he didn’t notice that Sai had stopped until he ran straight into him. Gaara put a hand to his forehead and winced as he looked up at Sai through a curtain of red heir that had fallen into his eyes, “I'm- I'm really sorry Sai, I should have been watching where I was going.” Sai simply turned and looked down at him not down on and Gaara felt a little of the apprehension he was feeling tighten in his chest ease. A mistake like that at his old school would have had him labelled a disrespectful klutz before he even had the chance to apologize or try to make amends and he would have borne that labelling until the day he left. Thankfully for him though his discrepancies had been more private and he didn’t have to go through the endless teasing and judging that he had seen others around him endure every day but that didn’t mean he had been any less victimised by another. He had been trodden on and used for another’s amusement and left with nothing in the end except tears so sometimes he wondered. Sometimes he wondered what it would have been like if he had have traded his own mistakes for theirs. Would there still be this hole in his chest where certain feeling should be or would he be missing other things, other parts of himself. Would it hurt differently or would the ache feel the same. Would it feel better or would it feel worse. “Gaara are you okay?” Gaara focused on Sai again instead of his thoughts and he was startled to see the raven haired teens face centimetres from his own, his dark eyes squinting as he tried to asses if the smaller boy was okay or not without touching him and invading his personal space further, “is your head alright, you drifted off there for a second.” Gaara took his hand away from his forehead and gave Sai a shy smile as he stepped back, “yes I'm okay, I really am sorry though, I just wasn’t watching where I was going.” Sai only smiled and this time Gaara thought it was somewhat genuine, “it’s okay, everyone gets lost in their thoughts sometimes. Just be careful or you might run into something a lot harder next time and do yourself some real damage. Oh and we’re here by the way.” Gaara stepped around Sai to see where they were and the first thing that greeted him was the amount of noise coming from the very large garage area and he wondered why that hadn’t thrown him out of his thoughts earlier. Talking and shouting was mixed in with the sounds of machinery and hardware being used, the whirs and thunks moving together in and almost musical cacophony. There wasn’t an ounce of silence to be had in the place but what a place it was. Sparks flew in every direction from welders and students ambled about carrying car parts as well as other things and Gaara was reminded that Sai had said that this area held the automotive, woodwork and metalwork shops as well as some areas for sculpting. Clearly though it wasn’t as sectioned as the raven haired teen had made out as people seemed to be working on all sorts of projects in this area, even if most of them were cars or motorbikes and there probably were areas for the others somewhere close by. There was so much movement and so much noise and in amongst it all sat some of the most incredible things he had ever seen, the cars. There were five of them that the redhead could see, each in different stages of production and none of them the same in their style. He wasn’t an expert on cars; in fact he knew nothing about them whatsoever so he could tell what make or model they were but that didn’t matter to him. What mattered, what caught his eye was that, even while in production, they were all so complex and so…shiny. “You look like you’ve never seen a working garage before,” Sai smirked as he commented on the look on Gaara’s face, “It’s really not all that special and only two of the cars work right now anyway. Come on and I’ll show you around.” “I haven’t before, I’ve never seen how cars are made or anything,” Gaara admitted as he followed Sai through the large roller door entrance that took up almost an entire wall of the large structure, his eyes darting in every direction as he tried to take in everything that they passed, “it’s so much more than I expected it would have been.” “This here is one of the cars that doesn’t work,” said Sai stopping in front of a coal black 1970 GTR XU1 Holden Torana with cherry red racing stripes. It was a beautiful car despite the fact that all its doors were currently missing and the black leather interior was only half complete in its installation. It was also currently being held up off the ground by jacks with the hood up and Gaara saw legs sticking out from underneath the front end clad in worn denim jeans. “IT DOESN’T WORK YET. YET!!” the shout from under the car was muffled but still audible enough to draw a small unexpected laugh from Sai and another raven haired teen wearing heavy gloves, an apron and a welding mask on top of his head who had come to stand beside him, “HEY SASUKE, CAN YOU HAND ME A SMALLER WRENCH.” A tan arm came out from under the car waving a large wrench around expectantly and the other teen snorted, “Idiot,” he took one of his gloves off and reached a pale, almost feminine hand across to Gaara, “I'm Sasuke by the way, you new here?” Gaara quickly took the offered hand, becoming more and more comfortable with the gesture as he was forced to repeat it, “yeah today is my first day, oh and I'm Gaara,” the redheads eyes shifted to the hand that was still waving the wrench around, “shouldn’t you help him?” Sasuke smirked and let go of Gaara’s hand before pulling off the mask and pushing his blue black bangs from his eyes, “I'm working on the doors today which is what we were supposed to be doing but since he broke the engine he can find out what’s wrong with it and fix it himself.” “Hey Sasuke would you mind looking after Gaara for a second, i have to talk to Kiba and it looks like he’s about to head out,” when Sasuke nodded Sai jogged off and Gaara watched him go, feeling slightly alone even if Sasuke was there with him. “JESUS CHRIST SASUKE WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?!” Sasuke sighed and headed over to the front end of the car, taking Gaara’s hand again and tugging him along, determined not to lose him or let him get hurt in what was clearly unfamiliar territory for him before stopping at a large red tool box and pulling out the right wrench, “FINALLY!” Sasuke scowled, his alabaster forehead creasing before he kicked one of the legs and put the wrench on the concrete floor just out of reach of whoever was under the car, being sure to make enough noise so the other knew what they were doing, “you broke it, you fix it. How many times am I going to have to tell you?” There was a heavy sigh from under the car before the owner of the legs came rolling out from underneath on a mechanics creeper with a frustrated expression marring his tan features and an apology in his bright blue eyes, eyes that Gaara was shocked to find he recognised, “will it help if I say sorry again?” “No,” Sasuke said flatly, “what will help will be you fixing the engine as soon as possible.” With a childish pout the tanned teen reached over and took the wrench and was about to roll back under the car when his gaze shifted and he was Gaara, eyes immediately going wide with recognition and surprises, “You!” “And you!” Gaara echoed. After his surprised exclamation the other teen quickly want to sit up without realising that he was still partially under the car and swore when his forehead connected with the hard metal and blood began to trickle down his face from a long shallow gash. “Idiot,” Sasuke mumbled as she sat to help the blonde who was making sure he was all the way out from under the car before sitting up and covering his forehead, trying to stop the blood getting everywhere, “let me see.” As Sasuke pried Naruto hand way from his head and began to inspect the wound Naruto smiled over the ravens shoulder at the redhead who was standing there seemingly embarrassed by the scene his presence had caused, “so you and your brother get home alright last night?” Gaara opened his mouth to ask the blonde a million questions, the first one being what he was doing here when Sasuke interrupted him, “do you think you could hold still for one second? Wait what kind of a stupid question is that, Naruto Uzumaki, hold still?” Naruto’s attention went back to the raven attending his injuries and Gaara saw that though the situation was strange he was totally okay with it now that the initial shock was gone, “better be careful Sasuke or someone might think you’re the one with the head injury.” Sasuke mumbled something about idiots and not thinking before they did something but otherwise didn’t comment, instead deciding to change to conversation topic and get Naruto talking so he could focus on fixing that accident prone head of his, “so you two know each other?” Gaara bit his lip and Naruto nodded without thinking, “Ouch shit! Well I suppose you could say that.” *** A/N: Thoughts? Problems? Questions? Let me know what you think.
