Part 2
He stopped by his house long enough to grab some of the bags he'd already filled in preparation of moving into his university dorm. As he stormed downstairs, lugging them with him, he tried to ignore how hot his cheeks felt, how his suit – the one Sasuke's mum had helped him choose, fuck – clung to him in a disgusting manner.
His eyes were burning, threatening to pool over with unshed tears, and he barely remembered to lock the front door. Jiraiya wouldn't be back until tomorrow, having a signing session in a different city, but he couldn't stay here. If he stayed, Sasuke might come over to confront him and he couldn't handle that. Not now. Maybe not ever, because he had fucked up everything and now their friendship was ruined because he just couldn't keep his crush to himself. He should have just ignored it entirely, should have never written it down. Even better he should have never started fucking crushing on his best friend in the first place, because that was why he was in such deep shit now!
But no, he had to be stupid, had to fall in love with his best friend instead of just being content with being friends. He had to be stupid and write down his secret in his own handwriting instead of typing it, and now everything was ruined. Sakura had got her last laugh after all and he wanted to bet she was absolutely revelling in her stunt now, knowing that she'd ruined their friendship thoroughly.
He was breathing harshly by the time he stopped for a break; his legs starting to feel like noodles and his shoulders already aching from the heavy bags. He fumbled trying to get his phone out of his pocket, nearly dropping it on the street twice, ignoring people walking past him.
The phone only rang twice before the call was accepted. "Hey, Naruto-kun. You enjoying your graduation party?"
"Can I come stay at your place tonight?" he asked, unable to hide the desperate tone in his voice which only made him feel even more pathetic than he already felt like.
He was just one big mess, had always been a big mess from the very moment that firefighter had got him out of the wreck, and why had he thought things would go well for him? Of course something had to go wrong, it always did, and he had got a reprieve of a couple of years before he had to go and ruin it himself.
He always did that, it seemed like. Ruin things for himself, because he wasn't good enough. Would never be good enough, no matter what he did or how hard he tried apparently.
There was a beat of silence on the other side of the phone. "Sure, come on over. Are you okay?"
"Thanks." Abruptly he hung up, too jittery, too worked up to remain on the phone for even a second longer. The longer he stayed on the phone, the more she would pry and he definitely did not want this to happen while he was still on the street. His ears hadn't stopped burning yet and the last thing he needed was to break down now.
He caught the bus just in time, standing awkwardly to the side with his bags. It was still early in the evening and the bus was almost jampacked with people returning home from work. He tried to make himself as small as possible, not wanting to bother anyone with his bags.
An elderly lady caught his attention by reaching out and gently patting his hand. "Dear, why don't you come sit down next to me?"
He looked at her startled. "Oh no, I'm fine."
She raised an eyebrow. Her face was quite wrinkled in her advanced age, but her eyes were still bright and piercing, making him feel even smaller underneath her gaze. "Dear, forgive me, but you don't look that fine," she said dryly and patted the seat next to her, shuffling closer towards the window to make even more space. "Come on, sit down; those bags must be heavy."
Naruto acquiesced, more so because he didn't want to be rude towards her. "Sorry," he muttered habitually, sitting down gingerly and stuffing his bags between his legs to free up some space.
She clucked her tongue. "I'm not going to nag you, but let me at least tell you this: whatever is happening now, whatever it is that has you down, you'll get through it. Life always has a way of working out, trust me."
He smiled and thanked her, but his stomach rolled as he considered her words. Maybe life had a way of working out, but so far that didn't seem to be the case for him.
Konan still had her makeup on when she opened the door of her apartment, waving Naruto inside. "Come in, you know I could have picked you up, right? You didn't have to take the bus."
"It's fine. I didn't want you – oh," Naruto cut himself off, guilt flashing up once more when he spotted a pair of men shoes next to her heels. Right, of course her boyfriend would be here, why wouldn't he be? God, he was such an idiot. "I'm sorry, I should have known Nagato-san would be here. I'll leave."
She closed the door resolutely before he could even turn around. "Don't be silly, you don't have to leave. We were just going to watch a movie. You can leave your bags here. Once you're ready, come to the living room." She waggled a finger at him and narrowed her eyes slightly; her nose ring catching the light. "And don't even think about trying to leave, you know I'll drag you right back here."
Which she absolutely would. She was the sweetest girl he knew, but boy, did she not take shit from anybody. She definitely would drag him back if he tried to leave now.
One more warning look and she returned to the living room where the sound of the television was being muted, followed by her saying something to Nagato.
Naruto swallowed and placed his bags against the wall, rubbing harshly across his eyes before he rid himself of his jacket and placed his shoes next to his bags, taking a pair of guest slippers from the small closet.
Nagato nodded at him in greeting when he shuffled into the living room. "Hey, Naruto-kun."
"Nagato-san," he smiled tersely, hovering next to the couch as he tried to debate where he should sit down.
The older man solved the problem for him by standing up and gesturing at his own seat next to Konan. "Why don't you sit down? I'll make us some tea." He was gone, disappearing through the kitchen door before Naruto could even protest.
"All right, tell me," Konan said firmly, pulling her left leg on the couch. "What happened?"
"Why do you think something has happened?" Naruto tried to deflect, sitting down and ignoring how comfortable the couch was.
She lifted an eyebrow, wholly unimpressed. "Because you look like utter shit," she replied bluntly. "Now come on, fess up. Why are you here instead of enjoying yourself at the party?"
"I - …" He hesitated, looking down at his hands. He started picking at his right sleeve, twisting the button back and forth, over and over again. "I did something really stupid a few weeks ago and it came back to bite me in the arse tonight," he said bitterly.
How could he have been so stupid? He should have known they would recognise his handwriting. If he had just ignored the box all together, he wouldn't be in this mess now. Sakura wouldn't have got the chance to humiliate him and he – he wouldn't have ruined his friendship with Sasuke.
Konan raised a hand. "Let me be the judge of this supposed stupidity, okay? Because, sorry, Naruto, but you're not exactly the best judge when it comes to yourself," she said gently. "What happened?"
He licked his lips; his cheeks too hot. "The – student council had put a box in the hallway a few weeks ago and you could put all your secrets inside of that. Sort of a way to start anew, I guess? It mostly seemed like a joke." He shrugged helplessly.
"And you put a secret of yours in the box?" she guessed, linking her hands around her raised knee. She'd painted her nails a pretty lilac and the nails of the middle fingers had an extra glittery layer on top.
He nodded silently; shame making him nauseous.
"What did they do with the box?"
In the kitchen Nagato started rummaging through the cabinets, judging by the noise of doors opening and closing.
"They got rid of the secrets, but – they recognised my handwriting and they – they projected it on the wall tonight," he replied in a small voice, blinking rapidly. He wasn't going to cry, damn it!
"That's fucked up," she said flatly. "But it couldn't have been that bad, right? I mean, you didn't confess to a murder."
"That might have been less worse," he said despondently.
She nudged him with her foot. "Okay, it couldn't have been that bad," she soothed. "It's still pretty fucked up of that council to abuse your trust like that, but I don't think it was that bad. They'll have forgotten about it by now already, I want to bet."
"No, they won't have," he muttered. The only saving grace he had was that he would never have to see the other students again. School had officially ended, so there was no way for them to taunt him about it during class anymore.
"Naruto, what was so bad about it?" she asked gently. "You don't have to tell me if you really don't want to, but I guess you wouldn't be here if it was something innocent."
He bit down hard on his lip and soon tasted a hint of copper; he'd probably reopened the small wound from when he'd been picking at his lip earlier on. Was he really going to admit it to her too? He had never talked about relationships with her before, because there had never been anything to talk about. After he'd become too old to still need a babysit, she had become a friend to him, but there had never been an opportunity to talk about anything related to romance with her.
Yeah, she was obviously dating Nagato, but unlike some people, she'd never teased him about his lack of a romantic life.
It was one thing admitting he had a crush; it was a whole other thing to admit that not only was he gay, but he was also in love with his best friend. Because he had to be that stupid cliché.
"Naruto? Whatever it is, you know I wouldn't judge you, right?" Konan said softly and removed her foot from the couch.
"I – I wrote down that I have a crush - "
"That's not that bad!"
"On my best friend," he finished and watched uncomfortably how she paused, putting the clues together. His hands turned clammy and he rubbed them over his thighs, hyper aware of the fact that this was the first time he had actually come out to someone – of his own choice, not because someone decided to project it on the wall for everyone to see and gawk at.
"Well, you've got good taste, I have to admit," she teased lightly, but sobered up when he couldn't even fake a smile. She sighed. "How did he react?"
He squeezed his eyes shut, rubbing his cheeks harshly. "No-not good," he choked out; Sasuke's eyes flashing up in his mind again. "He – he looked so shocked and disgusted and – and I couldn't take it, so I just left."
"Did you talk to him?"
"No, I – I can't. He probably hates me now." Some tears did escape and he angrily wiped them away; his chest hurting with the force he was using to suppress his pathetic sobs.
"Naruto, I'm sure he doesn't hate you," she soothed. "You're best friends; he won't ever - "
"You didn't see him looking at me," he muttered, shaking his head. "It's – that's why I had to come here, because I can't stay at the house. I don't – I can't face him. Not after this. I screwed up, Konan! I screwed up so badly! I messed it all up!"
She immediately pulled him into her arms, pressing his face against her shoulder. "You didn't screw up, Naruto," she stated firmly, stroking his hair. "What the council did was fucked up and they had no right to do that. You just need to talk to Sasuke-san; I'm sure that he was just surprised."
"I can't, you didn't see him; he's probably so mad at me now," he whimpered, clutching her arms.
She sighed softly again. "Naruto, you can't keep avoiding him. Aren't you two going to attend the same university?"
He froze; dread filling him as he realised that, yeah, they were supposed to attend the same university in just a few weeks. They weren't going to follow the same classes, but there would be no avoiding the other boy on the campus. He couldn't do that. He couldn't handle going to the same university, having to see Sasuke there and knowing how badly he'd screwed up their friendship all because he just had to go and develop a stupid crush.
He couldn't handle seeing Sasuke look back at him with disgust. Not after the years they had spent together, not after Sasuke being one of the first – and very few – to accept him as his friend. He could have easily ignored Naruto that first day, could have just turned his back to him, but he hadn't.
And Naruto had ruined that all because he just couldn't have kept his feelings to himself.
Abruptly he pulled away from Konan and she frowned slightly, eyeing him concerned. "You think Jiraiya can still pull some strings for me and help me get enrolled in the first university we visited?" he asked; heart beating fast.
Her frown deepened. "I guess, but why? You declined that one so that you could join Sasuke at his, remember?"
"Yeah, but that was before I fucked it up," he said bluntly. "I can't – there's no way that we can go to the same university now, so do you think it's too late to still change?"
"Okay, I think you're overreacting just a bit now," she said cautiously. "You don't even know for sure yet what Sasuke-san is thinking, so before you do anything rash, just talk to him first, okay?"
"I can't, Konan. I don't – I don't want him to look at me like grandmother looked at me," he admitted; his voice so small, so quiet it shocked him that she could even understand him.
He flushed when her features softened; a look of comprehension crossing her face. He had never talked to her about grandmother. He suspected Jiraiya had, if only to explain how Naruto had ended up with him instead of with his actual guardian, but he had never seen the need to talk to her about grandmother.
What had there been to talk about? He'd disappointed grandmother in being the one to survive the crash and she had taken to trying to drown her grief with alcohol. She had sobered up throughout the years, having finally sought out help for her problem, but even now he barely saw her. He wanted to welcome her back into his life, but it was hard to forget how she had looked at him all those months after the crash. That look of near hatred, of crushing disappointment had cut in deep in him.
He wouldn't be able to handle seeing that same look reflected in those black eyes he'd come to adore throughout the years. Having his own grandmother seemingly hating his existence had made him feel like shit – knowing he disgusted his best friend for being what he was? That would utterly destroy him.
"Why don't you stay the night here and tomorrow we'll discuss it further," Konan suggested gently, brushing his hair away from his forehead.
The touch felt so motherly, a sensation he hadn't been privy too in years, it had tears springing up anew in his eyes and he covered them, sniffling loudly.
"I'm sorry," he mumbled, but couldn't even say what he was sorry for.
Sorry that he was such a mess? Sorry that he had to unload all this crap on her instead of letting her enjoy her night with her boyfriend? Sorry that he was such an utter disappointment he couldn't even be a normal guy and just crush on a girl?
She tutted her lips and rose up, pulling at his wrist gently. "Come on, let's get you settled into the guestroom. Jiraiya will be back tomorrow and then you can discuss it with him."
Right. That was going to be fun to explain.
They were at a coffee shop, Naruto still unwilling to go back home just in case Sasuke was waiting there to confront him. The same reason why his phone was also shut off at the moment, because call him a coward, but Naruto was afraid to find out what Sasuke thought about him now. It was stupid, avoiding him, shutting off his phone, not returning home, but … The thought of having to face Sasuke, of seeing his disgusted face … He couldn't do that. That would be too much.
Jiraiya leant back in his chair, rubbing his forehead as he digested what Naruto had just told him. He was the second person Naruto had come out to and honestly, that didn't make it any easier. Because just like with Konan, Naruto had never had a reason to discuss anything romantic with Jiraiya. The guy wrote porn novels, Naruto liked to make jokes about it, but that was the extent of their relationship talk.
"Can you say something now?" Naruto asked nervously, clenching his hands tightly around his mug of hot chocolate. The heat was close to burning his skin, but he wasn't focusing on that. His stomach cramped when Jiraiya opened his eyes and looked at him.
"If you're worried about what I think of you being gay, don't," the older man said. "It doesn't matter to me, kid, who you like, as long as the person is decent. Girl or boy, doesn't matter to me. As for your request: I can pull some strings, but, Naruto, do you really want this? I think it's better if you talk with Sasuke-kun first."
Naruto shook his head. "I can't, Jiraiya. I don't – I don't want to see how he looks at me now. He didn't – the look he gave me yesterday was bad, okay?" He took a shuddering breath.
"Look, I'm not exactly the type to preach," Jiraiya said and leant forwards. "But take it from this old man: running from your problems never fixes anything. You think it will, you think that if you just run long enough, far away enough, that the problems will disappear, but kid, they never do." He suddenly looked ten years older; his voice gaining a weary tone. "They'll still be there and often, they've turned worse."
"I know." Naruto wasn't that much of an idiot, okay? He knew it was stupid to run away from the mess he had created; knew it was stupid to avoid Sasuke, because that would only make it even worse, but …
The thought of confronting Sasuke, of seeing him again, of seeing grandmother's eyes reflected in his … That was too much. There was only so much he could handle, only so much he could push through without completely shattering apart.
He and Jiraiya sat there in silence for a while, the man staring at him broodingly. He released a huge sigh, shattering the silence. "If you're really sure, I'll help you. We can go over there tomorrow, see if we can get the paperwork fixed."
"Thanks, Jiraiya," Naruto smiled tentatively, weakly. "And sorry for you know, making you go through this trouble for me."
The older man shook his head. "Don't mention it. Just – give it a thought, okay? Don't rule out talking to him completely. It'll give you closure no matter how the conversation turns out."
It most likely would, but Naruto wasn't ready for the specific type of closure he feared he would receive.
If even his own grandmother had not been able to stand him and push past her grief, why would Sasuke be able to push past this betrayal of their friendship? Naruto had messed up their friendship by falling in love with him; now he had to deal with the fallout of that.
The paperwork for the new university and the new dorm ended up being arranged within the next week, thanks to Jiraiya's interference. Naruto got rid of his old phone number and got a new one, making Konan promise not to give it out to anyone else if someone asked for it.
She'd promised, but it was clear she didn't agree with the way he was handling things. That didn't matter. It was easy for her and Jiraiya to say that it wasn't so bad, that he should just talk with Sasuke and clear the air. They hadn't been there, hadn't seen that look of disbelief slowly turning into one of disgust. They hadn't betrayed a friendship by falling in love with their best friend. They hadn't been so stupid enough to write down that secret and give other people the chance to humiliate them.
Naruto was done with being a disappointment to everyone he loved. He would suck it up and learn from this mistake and he would do better at university. He would put all of this behind him and start fresh in a city where nobody knew him, attending a university so large even on the off chance a former classmate of his was also attending class there, they weren't likely to bump into each other.
He was going to make everything better. He just had to.
His roommate ended up being a quiet red haired guy named Sabaku no Gaara. He had intense green eyes which had perpetual bags underneath them – "Insomnia issues, that's all." – and the kanji of love tattooed above his eyebrow. He either wore ripped jeans or the most comfortable sweatpants anyone could own and he switched between tight shirts or loose ones, depending on his mood.
He was a rather quiet person with at times a prickly nature, but Naruto actually managed to get along with him quite well. It had been a bit weird at first, sharing the same dorm with someone he didn't know at all, but they figured it out somehow. Naruto learnt it was best not to disturb Gaara after ten p.m. as he tried to get some sleep then and Gaara didn't mind Naruto chattering after their classes were finished. He was not the type to say much in return, but he was a good listener and he never made Naruto feel like he was being a bother.
Gaara's disposition sometimes reminded Naruto of Sasuke, but it was a thought he always ruthlessly supressed. He hadn't seen the dark haired boy since he'd fled from their graduation party and even three months later, he wasn't ready to try to reconnect.
How could he even reconnect still after all this time? What could he say after three months of no contact? He'd only make things worse, because that was usually what he ended up doing even when he never meant to do that.
He'd made a mess and he would just have to live with that. That was all there was to it.
"Temari wants to come over for a visit this weekend," Gaara grunted, stirring the straw in his ice cold tea.
The summer sun was beaming down harshly, heating up everything it managed to touch, but Naruto and Gaara had been lucky to grab the last spot in the shade of a local coffee shop. The shade didn't offer that much relief – impossible when there was barely a breeze to speak of – but at least they didn't have to sit in the sun, which was better than nothing.
Naruto perked up. "Your sister? Oh, that sounds nice!"
Gaara had mentioned before that he was the youngest of three siblings. His sister was the oldest one and he had one brother named Kankuro.
"Speak for yourself," Gaara muttered and scowled. "She's probably going to bother me all weekend, trying to get me to go sightseeing with her."
Naruto grinned, sipping from his soda. The ice cubes clacked against the glass when he lowered it back on the table. The condensation was so bad the glass was almost too slippery to hold on to. "Aw come on, it can't be that awful," he said teasingly. "She just wants to see what her little brother is up to."
"How about you let yourself get dragged around by her then, if you think it's so fun?" Gaara sneered and crossed his arms. "I wouldn't mind at all, I can assure you."
"Saddling your sister with a complete stranger, now that's not - "
"Naruto?"
As if a bucket of ice cold water had been dumped on him. That was how he felt when he slowly turned his head and saw Sasuke standing there.
Sasuke. Standing not even three feet away from their table; sunglasses clutched in his right hand. He wore a pair of slim jeans and a white V-neck shirt and looked ridiculously amazing as always. His eyes were also wide with disbelief as he took a step closer.
"Finally found you! You have any idea how long I've been looking for you?" he demanded; his voice close to snapping. "We need to talk!"
What was he doing here? Naruto's heart beat so fast, so harshly, it seemed intent on beating straight out of his chest. How had Sasuke found him? How could he be here?
"Naruto?"
Blue eyes snapped to Gaara, who looked at him concerned; his gaze briefly turning wary when he glanced at Sasuke. "You want me to deal with him?" Gaara offered in a low voice; shoulders already tensing up.
He had no idea who Sasuke was. Of course he didn't, because Naruto had never mentioned Sasuke to him, determined to not think about how badly he'd fucked up everything back then.
"Naruto. We need to talk," Sasuke repeated. He wouldn't be shooed away, wouldn't let himself be brushed aside.
Even four months later Naruto still recognised that stubborn tone. Sasuke had always been just as stubborn as him after all.
"I can get rid of him," Gaara suggested again, not even trying at this point to keep his voice down.
Naruto shoved himself away from the table, giving him a terse smile. "No, erm, that's not necessary. He's someone I know. Can you keep an eye on my stuff while I go talk with him?"
Green eyes flickered between the two of them. "Sure," Gaara agreed slowly.
"Follow me," Sasuke said abruptly and whirled around, marching out of the coffee shop.
Naruto winced, but well, he deserved that after what he'd done. Stomach performing several uncomfortable twists like it was its own circus, he followed at a slower pace, clenching his hands around the edge of his shirt.
Sasuke was waiting for him right next to the coffee shop, out of the way of people on the footpath.
"How did you find me?" The question was lame, Naruto acknowledged, and he grimaced, begrudgingly stepping closer when Sasuke beckoned him impatiently.
"Don't blame Konan, but I kept bothering her until she gave me an answer," Sasuke said frankly. "I couldn't get a hold of Jiraiya, so she was my next best option to get a hold of you. What the hell, Naruto, why the fuck did you suddenly disappear?"
"Why?" Naruto gaped at him in disbelief and threw his hands up in the air. "Why the hell do you think I did? Don't tell me you forgot what happened at the graduation party!" He attempted to sneer, but it fell flat; his lips doing nothing more than tremble pathetically.
Something twisted on Sasuke's face. "No, I didn't forget. I especially didn't forget how my best friend suddenly didn't want to have anything to do with me anymore and went as far as changing universities and even getting a new number!"
Naruto flinched, taking a step back and even though it was more than thirty-five degrees, he felt cold, wrapping his arms around himself. "I didn't – I couldn't stay there, okay? My secret – it was never meant to come out and then it appeared right there on the wall and everyone knew, you knew that I – that I'm in love with you," he choked out, "everyone could see how pathetic I was and I just – I couldn't deal with that. And I'm sorry I left, I'm sorry that I was so stupid to start crushing on you and it's my fault that people were laughing at you and I'm just so sor-"
"Don't."
That one simple word was enough to shut up Naruto completely and he stared at Sasuke, feeling both too hot and too cold at the same time.
"Don't fucking apologise again, you've got nothing to be sorry about," Sasuke continued strongly, clenching his hands. "If one of us has to say sorry, it's me. I'm sorry I made you feel like you had to run away. I'm sorry I didn't immediately go after you. I should have done that, should have stopped you before this mess spiralled further. My only excuse was that I was too surprised at first. That's the only excuse I have and it's not a good one. I should have gone after you immediately and I'm sorry I didn't."
Naruto didn't know what to say and could only stand there and stare. Sasuke was sorry? What did he have to be sorry for? He had had every right to be upset and angry and shocked. He didn't have to be sorry for that.
"You don't believe me." Sasuke laughed humourlessly and stepped further into the small alley, running his hands through his hair before pulling at the locks roughly.
"I don't know what to say," Naruto admitted helplessly.
He was so confused, he had no idea what was going on now. Was Sasuke here to be mad at him? To repair their friendship? He had no idea.
"Okay, let's keep it simple for now then." Sasuke turned around abruptly and stared at him; his black eyes piercing into Naruto's. "I'm going to ask you a simple question and I need you to answer truthfully. I don't want to hear another apology, because you've got nothing to apologise for, understood?"
"I guess?" Naruto was officially lost.
"All right, guess I'll have to make do with that," Sasuke sighed and rested his hands on his hips. "Are you still in love with me?"
Naruto froze up, staring back at him. "What, why are you - " he asked in a strangled voice, but Sasuke clucked his tongue.
"Yes or no, that's all I need to hear, Naruto."
Humiliation, just as bright as the evening of their graduation party, burnt him from inside when Naruto admitted ashamed, "Yeah, I am."
Because even four months without Sasuke and a fat dose of humiliation hadn't been enough to make his feelings disappear.
"Okay." Sasuke nodded to himself and then suddenly held out his hand to Naruto. "In that case, what do you say we have a do-over?"
"We have a what?" Naruto stared at him baffled. What was going on? What was he missing?
"You confessed, so now it's my turn." Sasuke took a deep breath, his cheeks gaining just the slightest hint of pink when he continued, "I'm in love with you too, what do say about going out on a date tonight? Unless you've got other plans?" His eyes flashed in a peculiar way when he briefly looked back at the shop, but Naruto didn't even try to decipher that look; his mind too jumbled with what he'd just been told.
"What? Wait, what's going on? Are you – is this some kind of joke?" he asked in disbelief; hurt creeping up in his voice.
Sasuke could have just ignored his confession; there was no need to humiliate him even further!
"Why the fuck would I skip a whole day of classes to make a stupid joke?" Sasuke riposted flatly and pursed his lips; the blush on his cheeks deepening. "I – wanted to ask you out after our graduation party. Well, I was going to try to figure out first if you felt something for me and then ask you out. When your secret was revealed … I couldn't believe it at first; I didn't think I would be that lucky to have you be in love with me too. I made the mistake of not going after you immediately, which I should have. Can you forgive me for that?"
"Erm, yeah, sure," Naruto said dazed; not daring to believe his own ears. There was no way this was actually happening, no way Sasuke was actually returning this feelings. That couldn't be actually true!
"So, how about we go on a date tonight?" Sasuke suggested, smiling somewhat shyly. "We can make up for the past few months, what do you say?"
"You are serious, right?" Naruto demanded, his heart pounding wildly. "Because I swear to god, bastard, if this is just an elaborate joke, I will kick your arse!"
Sasuke snorted and surprised him by pulling him closer by his hips. "Like you could wipe the floor with me," he teased; his smile growing when Naruto huffed, puffing out his cheeks. "And yes, I'm serious. You think I would travel all the way here if I wasn't serious? So, what do you say? You want to go out with me?"
Naruto's cheeks were definitely exploding with heat now, but it was a pleasant sort of heat, the type that made him grin widely, and had him wrapping his own arms around Sasuke's waist; giddy at the knowledge that he could finally do this now. He could touch Sasuke, could cuddle with him and even kiss him and even hold his freaking hand, and Sasuke wouldn't think he was weird! Sasuke was actually returning his feelings, was in love with him too. He was actually here, standing in front of Naruto, holding him by his hips, asking him out.
Even after the mess Naruto had caused, Sasuke hadn't given up on him, had searched for him until he found him.
"Yeah, I want to go out with you," Naruto agreed eagerly, his voice thick and he laughed embarrassedly when one of Sasuke's hands rose up to brush some stray tears away. Eugh, goddamn it, he always had to cry, didn't he?
"Can I kiss you?" Sasuke murmured, bending closer to him.
Naruto feared he would actually explode if he opened his mouth to answer, so instead he just leant up and pressed their lips together in a clumsy kiss. It was definitely clumsy, because neither of them had any experience, but they would figure it out along the way, Naruto was sure.
They would have more than enough time to figure out what they liked from now on.
"I'm sorry I was such an idiot," Naruto muttered when they parted; his mouth tingling.
"Don't. There's no need to apologise for that," Sasuke scolded him, but kissed him almost immediately again, which Naruto could get used to really quickly if Sasuke wasn't careful.
Maybe he wasn't such a disappointing mess in the end. Maybe, just maybe, everything would be all right after all.
Naruto couldn't wait to find out. With Sasuke right by his side.
The End
AN2: I'm not sure yet whether I will return to this particular universe or not (would there even be interest for it?). At the moment this story is finished. I hope it wasn't too awful! (A little bit of a spoiler: Naruto does actually end up seeking help for his issues some time later on). I'm off to sleep now because I've got an exam in the morning. More updates will follow soon, I promise.
Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in my future stories! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
