*Naruto POV*

            Naruto froze in the middle of creating a clone to block Itachi’s oncoming attack and so took the full force of the blow. The memories of the clone he left with Sasuke flooded his mind and he took off flying through the trees ignoring Itachi’s worried shouts.
            “Naruto!” Sasuke’s agonized scream cut through the blonde’s heart and he redoubled his speed. He wasn’t going fast enough. He couldn’t get to Sasuke. When he reached the clearing he didn’t even pause as he hit the ground sprinting for the Uchiha curled up on the ground. In seconds the raven was in his lap with Naruto’s arms wrapped firmly around him.
            “Shhh, I’m here, baby. I’ve got you, love. You’re safe. I’m here and you’re safe. Shhh, just relax, Teme. Breathe for me. In and out. That’s it. There we go. Just relax, love. Deep breaths,” Naruto crooned to Sasuke, slowly calming his rapid breathing. He buried his face in the raven hair and kept whispering soothing words into the Uchiha’s ear.
            Sasuke’s arms came about his neck and clung frantically. “You left,” he whispered into Naruto’s neck. “You left and I was alone. I was all alone and you weren’t here. Why weren’t you here? You said you didn’t hate me. Why did you leave me? I’m sorry I’m dirty and filthy and disgusting, but you said you didn’t care. I’m trying to be better. I will be better, just don’t leave me.”
            Naruto’s heart broke at the words. “Oh, baby, I didn’t leave. Something made the clone dispel. Remember you were sitting with a clone while I was training? I don’t hate you I love you. You aren’t dirty or filthy or disgusting. You are strong and beautiful and brave and I love you so damn much. I’m not going anywhere. Just relax now. I’ve got you safe.” He frantically tried to reassure Sasuke. One of his hands was tangled in the raven hair and the other was wrapped tightly around the thin waist. Naruto pressed soft chaste kisses anywhere he could reach trying to show Sasuke that he didn’t believe anything the raven had just said.
            “What the hell happened, Naruto?” Itachi exclaimed as he burst into the clearing. “Why did you take off like…What’s wrong with Sasuke?”
            “The clone dispelled. I’m not sure what happened but he was left on his own until I got here and he had a panic attack. I just need to calm him down I don’t think he’s hurt or anything,” the blonde replied still hugging Sasuke tightly. Naruto could feel his neck and shirt becoming damp from the raven’s tears.
            “Are you sure he will be okay?” the elder Uchiha asked.
            “I can’t be sure until he feels ready to talk and tell me what happened but I won’t push him. I’m going to take him home. Can you check out here and see if there is anybody around? Maybe somebody saw something.” Naruto cradled Sasuke in his arms as he stood. The Uchiha whimpered and pressed himself closer to the blonde’s chest. “Shh, baby, I still gotcha. I’m just gonna take you home.”
            “Sure, I will take a look around. I’ll come over later to let you know what I find.”
            “Perfect. I will see you then,” the blonde replied and he took to the trees and headed toward his apartment. He unlocked the door and carried Sasuke inside to the bedroom only pausing to allow Kurohyou to jump from the back of the couch to his shoulder. The kitten leaped onto the bed when it was in range and curled up on Naruto’s chest next to the raven when Naruto lay down. Between Kurohyou’s purring and Naruto’s whispering comforts and reassurances Sasuke gradually calmed down. Eventually he cried himself out and fell asleep.
            “We’ll take care of him, won’t we Kurohyou?” Naruto whispered so as not to wake the sleeping man. The kitten looked up at him with brilliant green eyes and Naruto swore he was saying ‘Yes we will.’ The three lay there for hours with Naruto holding Sasuke close and his fingers carding through the raven hair and Kurohyou snuggled close and purring.
            When the blonde saw Sasuke’s hand move and begin to pet the kitten he asked, “Are you back with me, Teme?” The Uchiha nodded but didn’t say anything.
            “Do you want to talk about it? I won’t force you. Only if you want to.” Sasuke clutched at Naruto’s chest and shook his head frantically.
            “All right, calm down baby. I’m not going to force you into anything. Just relax. Breathe for me Sasuke. You need to breathe. Can you do that for me? There we go. I’m not going anywhere. Take as long as you need to recover. I know how terrifying it must have been for you to be alone but I’ve got you now,” Naruto crooned. Sasuke’s grip loosened but shudders still wracked his thin frame. Naruto’s fingers continued to run through the silky black tresses and Kurohyou burrowed even closer to Sasuke.
            “Would you like me to read to you, love?” the blonde asked gently. Sasuke nodded hesitantly. Naruto picked up the book they had been reading from the bedside table and began where they had left off. Slowly one of Sasuke’s hands released Naruto’s shirt and began to pet Kurohyou. The blonde smiled slightly but otherwise did not comment on the change.
            About an hour later there was a knock on the door. Naruto ignored the way Sasuke cringed into him and sent a clone to escort Itachi into the room. The elder Uchiha stood in the doorway and without preamble said, “It was Kiba. He was playing a joke on you like he had done other times. He didn’t know it was a clone. When it dispersed he went looking for you, that’s why he wasn’t around. Is Sasuke all right?”
            “No he’s not all right, but he will be. Come in and sit with us. Would you like for your brother to read to you, baby?” Naruto asked.
            Sasuke clung to Naruto, “You won’t leave?”
            “I promise I am not going anywhere,” the blonde replied with a kiss to the top of his head.
            The raven nodded, “I like listening to him talk too.”
            “Come on, Itachi. You can either sit with us on the bed or in the chair there,” Naruto gestured to the chair by the bedside and proffered the book. “We are reading the book you gave me last Christmas, Sahara.  Sasuke is really enjoying it. Dirk Pitt is his favorite. Isn’t he, Sasuke.” The raven hid his face and nodded. “All right, you can be shy,” Naruto said with another kiss. Itachi took a seat on the bed beside the two men and began to read. Safely wrapped in Naruto’s arms and listening to his brother read, the tension finally bled from Sasuke’s body.
            Itachi noticed and stopped reading for a moment to ask, “Are you feeling better, Otouto?”
            “H-hai Aniki,” Sasuke whispered. His face was mostly hidden in Naruto’s chest but he peeked out slightly to look at his brother.
            “Hey, there’s my Teme. Welcome back. You worried me a bit back there,” Naruto said as he kissed Sasuke’s forehead.
            “I-I’m s-sorry I s-scared you. I-I d-didn’t mean t-to,” the raven apologized.
            “It wasn’t your fault. Nothing for you to apologize for. It happened and it’s over now. There’s nothing to be sorry for,” Itachi assured him.
            “Itachi’s right. We don’t blame you for panicking. I know you aren’t ready to be alone yet and that is fine. As long as you know I won’t ever leave you if I can help it,” Naruto interjected.
            “I-I do know that. It-it’s just…I know you won’t leave me, sometimes I just don’t believe it. When you are here I can remind myself but when you were gone…” Sasuke trailed off.
            “I understand, baby. I know being alone is your worst fear and it is going to take a while to get to the point where no matter what happens you know without a doubt I won’t leave you. Right now I am just happy that you trust me enough to try to believe it,” the blonde assured him.
            “I-I do trust you.   A-and I want t-to believe it. I-it’s just…” the raven’s face crinkled as he searched for the words to convey his point.

            “It’s just you were alone so long that it’s hard to make yourself believe this is real. I know. I know you still wake up in the night believing you are back with him. You think I don’t wake up but I do. I feel you cling and bury your face into me to reassure yourself I am here. What happened to you isn’t going to just go away. It will take time and I am willing to give you that time. As long as you know I love you and will do anything for you,” Naruto said. Sasuke didn’t reply, just buried his face in Naruto’s chest and pressed himself close. The blonde hugged him tight and Itachi resumed reading.
