In the shadows…
Umino Iruka walked home this rather
cloud-filled Friday afternoon. In his bag he had a lot of paperwork. He needed
to grade the students’ works on how to use the transformation-jutsu while on
missions. Gods, he really needed some time off, really he did. He looked up at
the sky and knew that if he didn’t hurry back home he would probably be totally
soaked. ‘Not to mention the kitchen-floor… I need to fix the roof…. AGAIN!’
The teacher sighed.
Iruka had bought himself a house at the
outskirts of the village. The area was quiet something that a teacher to young
ninjas in training really could enjoy. The days were filled with loud voices and
yells. It was never really quiet in the classroom, not even when there were
tests. And very often he was called in to help out in the mission-room at the
Hokage-tower. Sweet merciful heavens, sometimes Iruka wondered if he had to deal
with grown-ups or a bunch of overgrown babies.
But even though all the work didn’t give
him much, he had saved up for years and now he had bought himself a house. A
house that really could use a good make-over, but it was his house. A place
where he really could call a home. It had four rooms and a pretty large kitchen.
One room he used as an office, one room he used as a bedroom and one room he had
as a living room. And one room was saved for guests. But really in Iruka’s mind
it was Naruto’s room. Iruka smiled a bit as he thought of the blond boy. It had
been two years since the Kyuubi-container had left the village to train with the
toad-sannin. He missed the boy terribly but he got letters two times a month and
for that he was grateful. Iruka looked forward to see the crow legs that were
Naruto’s handwriting. He told Iruka about villages they had visited, about a new
jutsu he’d learn or about how the scenery was breathtaking in some places.
A loud thunder woke Iruka from his
thoughts and he felt the first raindrops fall on his face. ‘Shit, I need to
hurry…’ And with that he collected chakra under his feet and raced home to
his house. He needed to place the buckets under the holes in the roof if he
wanted a dry floor after the thunderstorm had passed.
Luckily he got home just before the
storm broke out in all its glory. He placed buckets in the kitchen and got a
kettle of tea going before he went into his little office-room. Iruka placed the
patch of papers on the desk and went back to the kitchen to make himself a large
cup of tea. The electricity went out and Iruka let out a snarling sound. It was
so typical. Now he had to chop up some wood to get the old iron stove going if
he wanted to have some warmth and of course if he wanted his tea. And Iruka
needed his tea when he looked over the children’s paper-works. It was an old
habit of his and a habit he refused to get rid of.
So he got a fire going in the old stove
and he got his hot water for his tea. ‘Now there just 23 essays to grade.
Piece of cake Iruka,’ he thought as he grabbed the hot cup of tea and walked
into his office. On the way he found a couple of candles so he could light up
his little office a bit.
But as the room was lit by the candles
Iruka almost dropped to his knees when he saw the puddle of water on his desk.
The papers soaked in water. Not a single piece could be read because the water
had smeared the ink.
“This is just not my day!!” he cried as
he tried to salvage the papers his children had worked so hard to write. Now it
was all but destroyed. He sunk down on the chair and ran ink-soiled hands over
his face, trying to calm down. How the hell was he supposed to grade them now?
Everything was lost.
Well, there was nothing he could do now.
Nothing more then to get a towel and wipe up the water and find another bucket.
Outside the storm was still raging furiously.
**************************
He was stealthy. That much could be said
easily. He was one of the best and it showed. Morino Ibiki. A jounin famous in
his own right. Large mountain of a man though he was, it didn’t hinder his steps
or tilt his balance as he sat crouched in a tree outside a certain home.
Rain soaked him through but he held
still, barely breathing on his branch. His black eyes were narrowed and focused
with an intensity few had witnessed and lived to tell about.
No one could touch his legacy. No one
would stand against him…for very long anyway. No one would dare.
Except the one who had.
Iruka.
~flashback~
There weren’t many who could say they
didn’t fear the Interrogations Officer. Ibiki didn’t mind though. Instead he
nearly revelled in the power he held over others. A glance, a nod, a smile could
tell so much and the officer could read their hidden messages and bend them to
suit his will.
When Ibiki walked through the halls,
people moved aside in a hurry, avoiding eye contact and bowing apologetically.
Today had been a good day. Ibiki had
been able to get the information he needed from a captured spy with little
bloodshed, and he had even finished his report. Although it was a day late….
No matter. The chuunin in charge of
mission reports would take it anyway. They always did. Maybe it would be
Kotetsu-san again. That man was easy to intimidate. All Ibiki had to do was look
at him and the bandaged chuunin would immediately ask how high he had to jump,
how long, and what song Ibiki would like him to sing while doing so.
The large jounin usually didn’t hand in
his reports personally. But his regular staff was out sick.
Of course they were lying.
Ibiki could tell something had spooked
them when they would come back nearly shaking from the missions office. Then
they would give each other sympathetic glances and try not to look like they
were huddling around Ibiki for protection.
That had thrown him a bit.
No one…huddled around Ibiki. And
he had to admit, he wanted to know what had scared his underlings into running
to him of all people for safety.
He opened the doors to the mission’s
office, instantly scattering a few new jounin as his gaze passed over them.
Actually, he soon noticed, more shinobi than usual were clustered into the room.
He spied Kakashi-san, Genma-san, and
Asuma-san feverishly working on what looked to be half-finished reports as they
stood in line.
Anything that could make the Copy-nin
write that fast deserves looking into. Ibiki had to admit that the
scenery displaying in front of him intrigued him. He walked up, stealthfully as
always and towered over the Copy-nin.
“Ahh, Morino-san, you’re here too?”
asked Kakashi as he noticed the head over his shoulder.
The heavily scarred jounin merely nodded
and made a gesture with his hand to silently tell the other ninja that he too
was here to leave his report. He watched Kakashi try and smile but what on earth
made the man sweat like a pig? The always so composed, laid-back ninja never did
anything like that. This was a mystery.
“Hatake-san, something troubling you?”
asked Ibiki quietly as he watched Asuma fiddle with his package of cigarettes
and Genma was chewing nervously on his senbon. Very strange.
“Well, you see, we’re late with our
reports and today Umino-san’s here…” said Kakashi and hoped that it would
explain everything to the interrogation-master. It would explain everything if
Ibiki once in his lifetime had come down here when the academy teacher was on
his edge.
“Umino-san?”
“Umino, Iruka, he’s working today and…”
Kakashi wasn’t able to explain things further because there was a roaring sound
cutting through the thick air.
Ibiki raised an eyebrow in confusion and
then he saw Asuma-san being kicked back. Paper flying all over the place.
“CAN’T YOU READ???!!! LOOK THERE – IT
SAYS – NO SMOKING!!!” a voice hollered over the office. “And that
means – NO SMOKING!!”
A voice like that must have plenty of
lungs to go with. Ibiki saw Kakashi gulp when Asuma’s large body was flown
backwards into the wall. His report scattered across the room. It was quite
clear that Sarutobi had tried to light his cigarette out of sheer nervousness.
Big mistake.
Genma was quick, he placed his report on
the desk and ran for his life out of the office and Kakashi was soon doing the
same, leaving Ibiki facing the terror behind the desk. What he saw made him
frown, not that his mask of indifference ever fell, but he was confused. As
Asuma collected himself from the wall and sneaked out from the office it became
clear that the jounin feared the man behind the desk.
Before Ibiki even looked at the man’s
face, he looked at his ranks and it shocked him that he was merely a chuunin.
How could a chuunin cause three high ranked jounins to almost piss their pants??
But as he turned his black eyes to take
in the face of the chuunin he too could feel something stir inside his stomach.
The fury in the eyes was enough to make the paint peel off the walls.
Iruka growled. Just slightly. Huffing as
he sat back in his chair, he scratched angrily at the zipper on his vest until
it peeled away. It was far too cold today. And too hot in the office.
And yes, he blamed his foul mood on the
weather.
It was supposed to rain later on, and
the chuunin was near screaming. His house wasn’t finished yet! He had holes in
the roof. As soon as the school teacher got home he was going to have to throw
pots on the floor to collect the rain water and prevent mildew. He threw off his
vest, slamming it onto the floor beside him.
And the idiots that worked here had
turned up the heat so that it was sweltering. Iruka didn’t like the cold. He
didn’t like the heat.
Today was a bad day.
Ibiki watched this little display of
misplaced anger in interest. He was still wondering why the jounins were so
fearful of the small…nearly petite, man in front of him. The Officer ambled his
great body over, standing just behind Raido.
The burned shinobi looked as if he were
ready to faint or bolt out the window as he stared at Iruka.
The chuunin made an odd noise in the
back of his throat. Something between a yowl and a hissing sound a cat might
make when its tail was stepped on.
“Well?” Iruka snapped, his voice
cracking through the stifling office like a whip.
Ibiki didn’t jump. Not Ibiki. Certainly
not.
He flinched.
Raido handed over his report, shaking in
his shinobi issued boots. The small chuunin snatched the folder out of the
jounin’s hands, instantly flipping through it.
A few moments later and the office
seemed to suddenly grow less tense. Iruka looked up with a brilliant smile and
placed the finished report in a neat pile at the side of his desk. Raido sighed
and just about collapsed on the floor with relief.
And then Iruka giggled.
And Ibiki was struck with the thought
that maybe the chuunin was a torture expert as well. Because from what he had
seen today could be of use while extracting information from prisoners. He would
store away this little piece of knowledge in the back of his bald head. It might
come in handy later on.
Raido smiled weakly as Iruka reached
over to pat his hand.
“Thank you for turning in your report on
time and finished Raido-san!” the school teacher chirped.
The jounin’s grin spread eagerly across
his lips as he gave Iruka a cheeky wink and spun on his heel, nearly skipping
out of the office with glee. He was just happy that he got away today. The
chuunin had been way too edgy when they all came into the office earlier and by
experience they all knew what could happen, what would happen on these days.
Ibiki watched the jounin disappear.
“Morino-san!” the voice made Ibiki look
back at the chuunin behind the desk. “Your report please?”
He nodded and handed over his papers. He
saw Iruka flip through the pages and it didn’t take long before Ibiki could see
the scar over the chuunin’s face deepen in colour. It almost became an angry red
colour before the teacher rose to his feet. His eyes were still glued to the
paper between his hands as he leaned over the desk.
Ibiki became concerned when Iruka
suddenly began to breathe very hard and then the eyes shot up and he felt as he
was being speared on red hot arrows. Iruka straightened his back and moved to
walk around his desk. He closed in on Ibiki who just looked at the teacher with
mere interest. He couldn’t help but wonder what was going to happen next.
Iruka took a deep breath; he closed his
eyes, collecting his thoughts, his anger before he let it all out.
“What is it with you jounin’s anyway???
What makes you think that you’re above everyone else?” asked Iruka with an eerie
calm voice.
Ibiki was not sure if he should answer
that question, it seemed rhetorical.
“Do you think you’re special? Huh… Do
you?” asked Iruka and with that he opened his eyes and stared up into the
scarred face of Ibiki. At the same time he began poking at the man’s chest. “Do
you think it’s fun to sit here for long periods of time, waiting for you stuck
up baby-asses to come here with your late reports?”
Ibiki’s eyebrow began to twitch when
Iruka poked him in the chest, looking at him as if he was a school boy that
needed a major correction.
“I sure have a lot of better things to
do with my time then to sit around here… doing nothing but wait. But noooo,
you just have to come in shitty late and make my day completely miserable.”
Poke, poke, poke.
Twitch, twitch, twitch.
“I’m tired, I’m angry and I really don’t
need anymore shit from you people,” growled Iruka as his brown eyes flashed with
fury. Too bad he didn’t notice the fire that was beginning to glow in his
opponents black eyes.
Ibiki…was a calm fellow. Really he was.
He could sit and stare a man down for hours with barely a movement on his part.
It was just the kind of person he was.
The burly jounin could also stand to be
yelled at. Because usually the one yelling would quickly realize who he was and
what his job description entailed. And then that person would run. No, scamper
really.
But the chuunin in front of him wasn’t
realizing and he wasn’t scampering. It looked as if he was just getting started
with his rant. And he apparently liked to accentuate his words with sharp jabs.
And no they didn’t hurt.
Much.
Ibiki slowly straightened to his full
height, towering above the lower ranking shinobi. Usually size was a factor in
intimidation.
Iruka didn’t seem to know that. In fact,
the jounin’s little technique only seemed to make the school teacher even
angrier. The small man puffed up with rage, amber sparks glinting in his doe
–like eyes.
Ibiki was about to correct the chuunin’s
mistake when he noticed something. Iruka was blushing. The loud yells were soon
drowned out as the Officer stared. The words that seemed to come from an endless
source was fading out as Ibiki watched the blush spread across the chuunin’s
face. Ibiki was the one that realized something at this moment.
Iruka was…cute when he blushed.
At that point a poking jab became a
swift kick to the right shin. That was his bad knee.
“I asked you why you were late in
turning in that report!!!” the chuunin hollered.
Now Ibiki was confused and in pain and
angry.
A group of shinobi had gathered in the
office, watching the two avidly. Iruka was known for his flaring temper and cute
butt. Ibiki was know for scaring the hell out of anyone he came in contact with
by blinking.
Money was passed between hands as to who
would come out alive. Ibiki was at a loss when he heard most of his fellow
jounin betting on Iruka to win. Now really, the small nin wasn’t that scary.
Another swift kick caught him in the
very same spot as before and he buckled. In the far back someone suddenly yelled
TIMBER! And down Ibiki went.
Unfortunate for both Ibiki and Iruka,
timber sometimes had a will on its own and right now, the large timber named
Ibiki fell forward.
And before Iruka had a chance to move
out of the way of the tall falling man he was trapped underneath a heavy load of
muscles. The air was pushed out of his lungs as he connected with the floor. A
dark oofing sound came from the fallen officer as his bad knee had given in to
the pain Iruka had caused with his kicking.
Iruka felt oxygen circulate his brain
once again and he blinked. Suddenly he became very aware of his situation. He
was laying on the floor with a very large man, a very heavy man on top of him.
He could feel something warm against his neck and there was something pushing
him right in the….
Iruka began to fight, scramble, he
wanted to get up. But try and remove a ton of cement, it was impossible. He
could hear laughs and nervous coughs from somewhere in the room and to his
horror – a large group of both jounins and chuunins looked at him, at them.
Iruka screamed for all his worth.
“Get off me you… you… you….”
“Wait… my leg,” a dark voice snarled
into Iruka’s ear, causing the teacher to turn almost violet with embarrassment.
“No, j-just get off me you big…. Oaf!”
“You kicked me,” stated Ibiki as he
tried to ignore the sharp pain in his leg.
Iruka couldn’t deny that, he had kicked
the man on his shin. And he had done it twice too. But he hadn’t kicked so hard.
“It was my bad leg.”
And that explained everything except to
why Ibiki still was displayed on top of Iruka.
Muffled voices echoed through the room
and then came the voice of the one person that most people feared when she
became angry.
The Hokage… Tsunade-sama, Tsunade-hime.
The chaos created by Iruka’s flaring
temper had caused such a ruckus that it had been reported to the Hokage herself.
And since the chaos was disturbing her very important work… (the sake-bottle was
safely put away before Shizune-san had a chance to see it) she wanted answers.
But what she saw made her jaw drop to the ground.
“What is the meaning of this?” she asked
demandingly. “You, tell me what happened here!” she pointed at Genma who had
dared to come back to see what happened in the missions-office.
Genma stuttered out an explanation and
he could see her eyebrows twitch as his story went along. He didn’t know what
happened between his disappearance and the moment he came back when he saw the
crowd gathered around the door-opening. But he could guess and he told the
Hokage about this.
“Morino-san, get up!” Tsunade ordered.
“I can’t!” growled the
interrogator-specialist. “My knee is not working.”
Tsunade sighed and walked over to the
bundle of legs and found Ibiki’s bad leg and put her hands over it. Suddenly a
green glow was shown and Ibiki couldn’t help but feel relieved. She had healed
it as best as it could be. He rose up but as he did he looked down and saw a
beetroot red scar shine brightly.
“You’ll pay for this, Umino-san,”
whispered Ibiki just loud enough for Iruka to hear. “Be sure of it…”
Iruka could feel a sweat break out on
his forehead as the enormous man towered above him and it got Iruka to scramble
to his feet as well. The anger and frustration he had felt was soon washed away,
replaced with fear of retribution. This was not Iruka’s day at all.
~end flashback~
The great Ibiki wasn’t one to forget his
promises. Nor his threats. So now here he was. Outside the fuming chuunin’s new
house in the rain, watching and waiting.
He was only going to scare the smaller
man. Really he had nothing against the school teacher. It was a mistake any
raving lunatic could make. The jounin rubbed his now well knee. It was lucky
Iruka had kicked him or else he never would have gotten it healed.
Ibiki wasn’t much for hospitals. No, he
was the one that wanted to probe and dissect things, or rather brains, it was
not the other way around.
He held his breath as the chuunin passed
a window, staring out for a few seconds as if he could see Ibiki. But the moment
passed and the hulking man thought he saw a sad smile pass over Iruka’s lips.
*********************
The school teacher sighed as he held one
of Naruto’s letters in his hands. It was still so nice of his former student to
keep in touch. It kept Iruka from over worrying all day.
He rubbed the scar over his nose in a
twitch he had never gotten rid of, thinking back over his miserable day. A scowl
marred his fair features as he blushed deeply.
“Stupid Morino…” Iruka muttered as he
threw the letter on his table.
Jounins were so rude, all of them, to
Jiraiya-sama to Shika-san. They could never be counted on to turn in a
report—and really how long did it take to write such a thing?! And…and then to
actually have the nerve to land on him?!
Iruka blushed again and rubbed his scar.
“Idiot jounin,” he snapped to the couch
who wisely decided to stay silent.
The school teacher sighed again and
rubbed at his neck. Ok, so he lost the students’ essays to the rain that had
seeped through his roof. Ok, he had kicked Asuma-san right in the chest, sending
him into the wall and his report spread all over the place. Ok, so he had poked
one of the most feared jounin of all of Konoha… and then having the joy of being
squished against the floor… Only one thing would right the awful wrong that was
this day. And that was a bubble bath. It was one of the chuunin’s many
weaknesses and he enjoyed it fully.
A smile already danced across lips as he
went to his room, humming a low song to himself. Yes, a nice hot bath would fix
everything. And he was glad he had purchased a new heating unit for the bathroom
alone.
The electricity would kick on in a few
minutes he knew, it always cut out in bad storms. A little while later and he
was walking naked through his house, blushing a charming pink the whole way.
The chuunin hadn’t gotten used to being
able to move through his own house unburdened by clothes. It still always felt
like someone was watching him.
Iruka left the bathroom door open as he
sat a few candles down, lighting the room in a low glow before sitting on the
edge of his tub. And this was the reason he had settled for this house in
particular. Its bath was magnificent and large.
The chuunin stood on front of the
counter as he took his hair down, waving his hand through it to dislodge any
tangles.
**************
Ibiki didn’t flinch this time. He barely
blinked. But that was because he couldn’t move. From his spot he had a very
clear view into the open bathroom. And…well now he could see why the other
jounin always talked about Iruka’s rear.
Tight, well shaped and that dark skin
colour. Iruka’s bottom was something any person surely could feel drawn to. To
grope, to grab…to spread open.
Ibiki had never pegged himself for a man
that would look at another man and feel lust or even something remotely like it.
But now, seeing the young teacher naked he could feel a fire storm rush through
his veins, heating up every nerve ending in his body. But he could also see
quite the few scars dotting the teacher’s body. This was a bit peculiar because
Ibiki knew that the teacher was just that – a teacher. And of course, sitting in
the mission room taking in reports, but neither would give such wounds that they
would scar.
‘And that scar on his face, how did
he get that?’ Unknowingly Ibiki let his right
forefinger trace one of the scars on his face. He knew how he got his, but what
about Iruka? He couldn’t help but to think that it was a shame that such
beautiful skin should be marred by such atrocities.
He could almost hear the dark sigh the
teacher made as he sunk into the bathtub. The face that earlier was contorted
with anger and frustration now only showed relaxation. Ibiki licked his lips as
his eyes strayed over the dark skinned man. He could feel his fingers itch in
wanton need. Again he surprised himself by wanting to touch Iruka’s skin. He
wanted to ghost his fingers over sensitive areas, seeing the man writhe in
passion. He wanted to grab those tight buns and push the teacher closer to
himself.
He could have sat in his spot until the
dawn came and until Iruka left his house, but it looked as if the storm was not
going to leave any time soon and when the lightning struck the tree just fifty
feet away from him he felt that it was for the best if he left. He didn’t want
to get fried. What a horrible way to go – die while peeping into someone’s
bathroom (although he could imagine the toad-sannin going this way when he was
doing his so called research).
So Ibiki reluctantly left his hiding
place and left for his own home. Home, if you really could call the Spartan
apartment that. No, home was just like Iruka’s house. Even if the electricity
was gone it still looked warm and cosy. As the interrogator officer stepped into
his apartment he felt cold. This was not a home; this was just a place where he
got his sleep. He didn’t even eat in his kitchen. He couldn’t even remember a
time when he had.
He checked his schedule for tomorrow and
was glad to find that he only had two prisoners to investigate. And looking at
the ranks they had it would probably not take more than an hour or so before
they broke down and told him everything he wanted to know and pissing their
pants while doing so.
Ibiki removed his clothes and laid down
on the futon, hands behind his head as he stared up into the ceiling. Iruka
hadn’t been afraid of him, instead the teacher had shown a spirit and spunk that
Ibiki very rarely had seen before. It was refreshing. It was intriguing and he
wanted to feel more of it.
