Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto, nor the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Author’s Notes: From a roleplay I wrote with my friend SpiritAmoung-Darkness, back in the Summer of 2014. I decided to have it put into a fanfic, and she agreed. This is basically a rewrite of Shippuden with Orochimaru. Many things will change, including his apparent death and return during the war. He won’t be dying and also the war won’t be happening, at least not the way it did. Neither her nor myself own the Naruto characters. The OCs belong to us.

Prologue – Strangers
Tracking her way through a foreign land, a trained kunoichi by the name of Sarah Senu was heading for the Hidden Leaf Village on a diplomatic mission. She had a message for the Hokage, suggesting an alliance. It was a long-term goal of Chikagakure, known as the Village Hidden Underground, to become allies with other shinobi villages.
Her village was small compared to others and didn’t have a Kage, but it did have a leader who was treated as such.
While on her travels, she came across a river. From the sound of the flowing water, she decided to stop and take a rest by the riverbank.
It was a still night in late summer, with a light wind that could not be felt but was enough to stir the leaves on the trees and the tips of grass. A thin, broken layer of clouds spread across the sky. Now in a small clearing only a few feet from the tree line. Mountains shown over the tree tops. It was quiet.
Unknown to her though, she was not alone. Since it was nightfall, and hard to see, it hid a dark figure that sat on a rock next to a nearby tree. Sensing the woman coming, the figure did his best to cloak his chakra. This didn’t take much effort, since there wasn't a lot left after the recent battle he was in. His haunting eyes watched her approach the water and pull off her backpack to get a drink.
The kunoichi, not paying enough attention until she heard laboured breathing from behind her. Grabbing a kunai from her leg, Sarah swiftly turned to the sound. "Who's there!?" she demanded.
When she received no answer, her eyes narrowed. She could see whoever it was, was sitting on a rock. The silhouette was of an older man with long, dark hair. He was hunched over, hair hanging in his face. His breathing was strained, making it noisy, which gave him away. A few coughs were heard in addition to his panting. His arms remained at his sides, looking almost unnaturally stiff. In the dark, she couldn't really make out who it was or any of his features.
Angered by the fact her question was ignored, she threw the kunai at the man. It sailed past his head, colliding into the tree beside it. The figure did nothing, he knew immediately the blade was meant as a warning shot. Taking out another one. This time, prepared to attack if necessary.
"I asked you a question!" she demanded. Standing, she took a cautious step forward, slowly moving toward him.
As she drew closer, the clouds parted, revealing a full moon. It illuminated the man slightly, allowing her to take a better look at her guest. Or perhaps ...was she his? Though the moonlight didn’t give a lot of brightness, it was enough to show he was in pain.
"You're hurt," she presumed, not knowing who it was that she was really dealing with.
Coughing again, he lifted his head to look at her. His pale skin stood out in the dim light. Still he said nothing, as he continued his struggle for air.
Keeping on her guard, Sarah lowered the kunai. Deducing the man before her could not harm anyone, not by the way his arms were. They were an odd colour, and that alone wasn’t a good sign.
"I'm sorry for saying this, but you look like hell." She knew he was listening, and that he chose not to answer. Either that or his difficulty breathing prevented him. "I don't think I've ever seen you before."
Between breaths, he finally spoke. "..What... do you want?" By his tone, she could tell he did not fear her, though her approaching him made him curious.
Sarah took a step back. His voice was very menacing, and it was something she didn't like. She had lowered the kunai, but it was still in her hand. Clenching it a little tighter, she kept a good hold on it. Appearances were often deceiving, and a ninja could never let their guard down.
"You look like you're in need of some kind of help," Sarah replied with caution. “I mean you're out here, alone and injured, making yourself a very easy target. Just by the way you’re dressed I can tell you're a shinobi, but in your condition you’d be easily overpowered."
She had no idea to the contrary, that she was talking to a well-known and feared Sannin, former ninja of the Leaf, Orochimaru.
"I'm...fine..." he said, his breathing betraying him when he had another coughing spell.
Sarah snorted. "Could have fooled me," taking another step toward him. She remained on edge, in case he tried anything.
Not raising his head, he spoke again. "Persistent thing… aren't you?" the snake nin said, before another cough cut him off. 'Where the hell is Kabuto with that medicine..?' he thought, thinking of how he wound up there in the first place.
"Well I want to be sure you're alright," she frowned, returning Orochimaru's thoughts to the present. "You appear to be wounded and your arms…look like you can barely lift them."
The more she tried to help him, the more it intrigued him. In spite of his laboured breath he smirked slightly, entertained. Believing her for the moment. "You really want to help me…don't you child?"
Her frown deepened. "I'll have you know, I'm older than you think." What she didn't realize is that she was talking to someone who was nearly twice her age. "And yes. I want to help, if I can that is."
It was easy for him to note the fear in her eyes, but she wasn't going to back down. The kunoichi held her ground.
Figuring she might be useful, he finally gave in. However, if she betrayed him, he’d have no trouble disposing of her. He was wounded, but that would not deter him. There were other ways to kill a person without the use of hands. "I am waiting…for my medic…. but.. I could use some shelter..," he managed to get out.
Sarah looked up at the sky. It was going to be a long night. The man was easily at a disadvantage, or so she believed. She then nodded. "I can help you with that." She lowered her kunai again, putting it back in its holster this time. "Try anything and I will kill you."
He chuckled at her warning, amused by her idea that she could take him. Soon another cough forced his amusement to disappear. ‘Damn that old man!’ he thought, angered by his misfortune. But it would seem his luck was changing.
With the kunai away, she went over to her backpack and pulled out a large piece of material. It took her a few minutes, but the material soon became a small tent. When she was done, Sarah turned back to the man.
"It's not much, but at least it's shelter. I have a couple blankets and it can fit two people, if you're willing to share."
Little did she know, he was used to camping to and from missions. Orochimaru slowly stood, arms hung limp at his sides. His golden eyes on her. "It doesn’t matter…" Not caring what she did. Kneeling down in front of the tent, he got in as well as he could without using his hands.
Sarah waited until the man was inside. Judging from his demeanor, he wasn’t the type that liked having help, so she gave him his space. Giving him some time to get settled. When the rustling within quieted down she then crawled in, taking her bag with her. Once inside, she pulled out her sleeping gear. "I'll let you use my pillow, and I'll use my pack." She offered him a blanket, waiting to see what he would do.
Leaning back against the tent wall, he looked at the blanket. He wasn't accustomed to this kind of treatment, when she was not obligated or ordered to do so. "I won't need it..” he said finally.
"Fine," she retorted. "Don't gripe that I didn't offer then." She took the blanket and pillow, setting it beside him in case he changed his mind. "Would you mind if I got some rest?"
"..Do as you will...," he replied. The snake nin found it strangely enticing the way she would talk to him, and how her guard wavered around him, even if she wasn’t aware of who he was. She would eventually learn.
Sarah nodded, getting herself comfortable. "Oh and before I forget. I'm always armed. So you try anything funny, and I will kill you." Too bad her feelings weren't as convincing as her words.
She sensed his chakra and though couldn’t find much, that didn't mean he couldn't do something. If it weren't for that, she wouldn't have bothered to help him. Feeling his eyes on her, it was really creeping her out. She really didn't want to be in the tent with him but she smelled moisture in the air, and that meant it was going to rain soon.
An hour or so later, she was asleep. Orochimaru sat in the same spot, resting as good as could be expected with his discomfort. Occasionally, he glanced over at the sleeping woman and at the pillow he was offered. His eyes lingered on it. Attempting to flex his finger, it barely twitched. Holding back an annoyed hiss that nearly left his throat, so not to disturb the kunoichi. Just then he heard the patter of rain hit the tent. Glad now that he took refuge.
Thinking about the previous events. He and his followers, Kabuto and the Sound Ninja Four, were travelling fast back to their hideout, that he named the Hidden Sound Village. They fled the Hidden Leaf Village after successfully killing the Third Hokage, but failed in their attempt to completely destroy his old home. His arms were now sealed, which left him incapacitated and weakened. The group was looking after their Lord when his condition started to worsen, and they were forced to stop.
At the rate they were going, it would take too long to get there and administer treatment. Kabuto came up with a solution, to travel back and get his medical supplies to help his lord so he could make the journey. It would draw too much attention to stay together and Orochimaru didn't want the rest of them idly gawking at him. They had no choice but to leave him behind while Kabuto retrieved the medicine. It had been some time since he last seen his medic, and he could feel his condition wasn't getting any better. He was alone, which he didn’t mind, until this woman came across him. Soon his thoughts drifted.
"My lord?" He heard a familiar young male’s voice from outside the tent.
With a smile, Orochimaru got himself up. Being careful not to wake the woman who kindly allowed him usage of her tent. He pulled himself out to stand next to his faithful follower, Kabuto Yakushi. He noticed the rain had passed. While he was thinking about his predicament he must have fallen asleep, as daybreak was now approaching.
The silver haired medic gave him an odd look. "Are you alright, my lord?" Curious as to why he was in a tent.
"Fine..." he wheezed, lying, which was common for him.
Knowing he was lying. Kabuto didn’t say a word, handing his Lord the medication. Orochimaru was quick to take the pills, swallowing them whole.
"We should be getting back," His medic suggested. The snake nin agreed, glancing over his shoulder at the tent. "Is something the matter?" Kabuto asked.
"It's nothing." With that the two left, disappearing into the brush.
When Sarah woke the next morning, discovering she was the only one in the tent. A small growl left her throat, annoyed the stranger left, but relieved he was gone at the same time. She packed her things and continued on her way to the Leaf, only to learn that the Third Hokage was killed in an ambush. Which meant her mission was a failure. Shortly after attending the memorial to those who perished in the attack, she left for her home country to bring the bad news to her village leader.
