Prompt: Study Dates
The Betrayal
“You think she likes me?”
An exasperated sigh rang out on otherwise peaceful morning. Two teens, one brunette and annoyed, the other blonde and oblivious, strolled along a familiar street towards the wrought iron gates of Konoha high. Polar opposite to those that saw them, Sasuke dark and brooding; his navy blue school uniform immaculate and iron pressed, Naruto radiant and outgoing,, his uniform was pressed but haphazardly thrown on his tall frame.
Having spent most of their lives together Sasuke should have to be used to Naruto ’s unique brand of theatrics, but alas, his tolerance never seemed to increase.
“How the hell would I know,” Sasuke grouched, “why don’t you go ask her.”
“I can’t do that!”the whiskered youth exploded, planting himself in front of the raven haired seventeen-year-old, walking backwards to ensure the boy could look him fully in the face as he went on his idiotic tangent,“what if she says no? What if she laughs at me? What if she actually secretly hates me? What if she’s so disgusted that I like her that she withdraws from school, moves to another state, and changes her name just to get away from me!”
Forehead vein pulsing, Sasuke shoved his bestfriend out of his way, his leisurely pace to school increasing double time.
Anything to get away from brainlessness incarnate.
Like Death itself, there was no escape.
“Sasuke!” his forever parasite hollered, jogging backwards to keep pace, “what if-”
“Then don’t tell her!” Sasuke huffed, glaring for all he was worth, “if you’re that worried she’s going to rejection in the most humiliating way possible, then keep your feeling to yourself. I don’t give a shit, just shut up about her!”
Silence from the vulpine faced teen, then, “Hinata’s the sweetest, nicest girl in the world, she’d never do something like that, dattebayo. Even if she doesn’t like me, she’d never be mean about it. Come on Sasuke, even you know that.”
On the edge of volcanic eruption as Naruto ’s entire anxiety fueled tirade replayed in his head, Sasuke growled, “then why the hell did you think she’d do any of the other shit you just-” he couldn’t even finish, he was so aggravated, “why the hell am I even arguing with you!”
Brow twitching, Sasuke stomped down the sidewalk, ignoring Naruto ’s muttered, “jeez, you wake up on the wrong side of the bed or something?”
He knew if he engaged with him, he ’d strangle the dobe.
OoOoOo
“She’s so pretty today,” Naruto sighed, gazing at the cloudless blue sky.
Sasuke rolled his eyes heavenward, not even asking who she was. That’s all Naruto seemed to want to talk about these days. They weren’t even at school and Naruto was already starting. After yesterdays ‘do you think she likes me’ incident, Sasuke’s patience, what little he’d been given at birth, were wearing incredibly thin.
“How the hell would know,” he replied, “you haven’t even seen her today.”
Turning confused baby blues to the irritated brunette, Naruto asked, “what’s your point?”
Feeling the beginnings of a headache, Sasuke fought the urge to sling his book heavy backpack at the empty headed blond.
“How the hell do you know she looks pretty today when you haven’t seen her yet, idiot.”
Now Naruto looked at him as if he were the idiot in this equation.
“It’s Hinata, Sasuke. Hinata,” he replied, as thought that answer made any goddamn sense.
“What does that have to do-”
“She’s always pretty, I don’t need to see her to know she looks pretty, ‘ttebayo. She- wait! Sasuke, why are you running?!”
OoOoOo
“Hey Sasuke!”
Glaring at the obscenely cheerful teen jogging up the street towards him, the fed up Uchiha instantly decided enough was enough.
No more mooning over Hinata.
No more whining and agonizing over the status of their non-relationship.
This was it.
Sasuke was done listening to his bellyaching.
“New rule, dobe. From here on out, Hinata Hyuuga is a banned topic of discussion, if you can’t talk about anything else on the way to school then don’t speak. If you so much as mention her one time, I swear to God you won’t make it to class.”
The blond boy stared back at him with a mixture of confusion and blankness, then, as comprehension dawned, that face appeared.
That pouty, ‘you just kicked a puppy, you’re so mean’, face that Sasuke wasn’t gonna break for.
The face that absolutely, positivity wasn ’t going to work this time.
“You get ten minutes a day, that is it,” Sasuke amended, brow twitching as the yellow haired pain in the ass started to grin, “and wipe that dumbass smirk off your face."
“Ten minutes, I can do that, dattebayo.”
He absolutely couldn ’t and wouldn’t, they both knew that.
A derisive grunt rumbled from the ever suffering best friend, “instead of wasting your time pouring your dumb heart out to me, you should be spilling it to Hinata. You’re not the only boy interested in her. One day some guy’s going to come along and do what you don’t have the balls to do.”
Oceanic depths narrowed.
“Is this your way of telling me you got the hots for Hinata, because-”
“You just lost your ten minutes for today.”
OoOoOo
The first time Naruto saw them together, he didn’t really think much of it, Sasuke’s warning didn’t even cross his mind.
Gaara wasn’t exactly a friendly guy, however, he was a regular among their group of friends, certainly consistent enough that him talking to Hinata outside that social arena wasn’t all that weird, merely…off. Naruto was sure they knew of each other, she was included in the redhead’s generic greeting when he pulled up a chair to the lunch table or inserted himself in the cool shad of their hangout spot behind the bleachers, but once he made his presence known to the masses, they didn’t exactly converse.
So to seem them now, standing together and chatting avidly threw him for a loop.
Again, it wasn’t all that crazy of a situation, it just kinda…attracted his attention.
Though, to be fair, he’d always be curious about (suspicious of) any guy that chatted up Hinata Hyuuga, and contrary to popular belief, it wasn’t just because he pined for her every moment of every day and had been since junior high. Hinata was just one of those people that touched a nerve in others, she flipped that little trigger that made one want to protect and shelter the unvarnished goodness that was Hinata Hyuuga, slaying any dragon, no matter how big, that threatened that goodness.
He wasn’t alone in those feelings.
If there was any depraved soul evil enough to want to hurt her, they’d have to go through a long line of people to get to her (him first in line of course).
Gaara knew that.
More importantly, Gaara wasn’t a bad guy, just brooding and a bit of a downer. Hinata was the best of the best, if anything, his moody friend could only benefit from basking in her grace for a little while, and if he was wrong and Gaara did something to upset her, well then, they’d be having a long ‘discussion’ after school.
Until then, he’d wait and see.
Indulging a careless shrug, Naruto stuck his hands in the pockets of his charcoal colored trousers, tossed one last fleeting glance at the duo before meandering off to where he’d initially been headed…
…to bug the shit out of Sasuke until the bell rung.
OoOoOo
The third time he witnessed their interaction, separate of a group setting, he figured they were merely falling into the ‘routine friend’ cycle, becoming one person that got a daily ‘hello’ and a few minutes of shootin’ the shit with each other. That individual that wasn’t apart of the roster, but qualified as an honorable mention when present.
It was nice for Gaara, the guy didn’t have many real friends or even acquaintances. Naruto and Gaara’s siblings, Temari (who had graduated two years ago and was now in college) and Kankuro(who graduated last year and was gone too) were the only people he spoke more than a paragraph to.
So to see him now, speaking as though he were talking to Naruto, going so far as to show that rare smile he never wanted anyone else to see…
Hinata had made a fair bit of progress.
He’d be impressed if it were anyone else.
Hinata was so kind and sweet, who wouldn’t smile when they talked to her?
Some sick fuck psychopath that’s who.
Nice to confirm Gaara wasn’t a sick fuck psychopath, he just kinda looked like one.
With a careless shrug, Naruto trudged off to his initial destination…
…to pester the shit out of Sasuke until he let him copy his economic notes.
OoOoOo
The sixth time was the first time a whisper of Sasuke’s warning fluttered into his mind, like a ghost hovering on the fringes of his consciousness.
It was far less than a tangible thought, more of a sixth sense…
A muted alarm bell ringing in his ears.
The pair were seated closely on a bench outside, sharing a laptop, their bodies…touching. Shoulder and thigh practically fused. She was smiling and giggling, Gaara flashing his own annoying shy side smirk, and the whole cozy picture really rubbed him entirely the wrong way.
Why the hell were they suddenly so goddamn close?
Hinata was an artsy type; she loved baking, gardening and pressing pretty flowers.
Gaara was a computer nerd; he spent most of his time on mmorpgs and collected blades as a hobby.
What the hell did they have in common anyways?
Why were they spending so much time together all of a sudden?
An offensive explanation slithered passed his brain, but surely it couldn’t be that. There was no way they were together. He’d have heard about it the moment it happened, surely. Besides, Gaara was a good friend, they had a bond that went way back to their nursery days, and held strong in their senor year, therefore, his redheaded friend knew Naruto’s not-so-secret secret.
There’s no way the redhead would try and steal Naruto’s (future) girl, right?
He knew about the guy code didn’t he?
As another beautiful laugh passed her lips, the aggravated blond began to question that notion.
With irritated clench of his fists, Naruto stomped off to his original destination with a new purpose…
…to bitch about his problems to Sasuke and nag for advice on what to do.
OoOoOo
“They’ve been going on dates for the last two weeks, thought you knew that, idiot.”
No the fuck he did not!!
A date!
A fucking date?!
No, no.
Dates??!!!
As in more than one?!
“You’re a goddamn liar! Gaara would never- Hinata would’ve told me- you’re a fucking liar and I’m gonna kick your ass!” he declared, grabbing the teen by his neatly pressed jacket.
“What the hell are you getting mad at me for? I warned you weeks ago to stop dragging your damn feet!”
Naruto stood speechless, staring at his bestfriend as though he’d grown another head, watching as the brunette calmly detached his hands and straightened his jacket.
So it was what it looked like…
Gaara had betrayed him.
He knew how Naruto felt, he knew and still-
“Look, dobe, dating doesn’t mean their an item, neither of them said they were together, you still have time to-”
“Kick Gaara’s ass!” the now enraged blond growled, turning abruptly and thundering from the rec room.
His timing was both perfect and terrible, because as he stormed down the second floor stairs in search of his backstabbing ‘friend’ Gaara, he found himself just in range to hear a few damning words from his crush.
“Soooo, when’s your next date with Gaara?”
Those words held him frozen, his heart pounding in his ears, dread a writhing monster in his gut.
That was Sakura’s voice.
The next voice, the one that answered that horrible question, destroyed him inside.
A strange laugh rang out, then, “Gaara and I are meeting Friday, in the library.”
Confirmation.
They were dating…
Hinata, love of his life, and Gaara, back stabbing, no good, traitor ass ginger bitch, were dating.
But why.
Why now when she’d never dated in anyone in her entire seventeen years?
Why Gaara.
He was sad and angry and hurt and despondent and he really wanted to talk to her, to run down the last few stairs and ask her but he didn’t trust himself to open his mouth, fearful the dark cauldron inside his heart would come spilling out.
“Awww, then you’re gonna miss out on our yogurt party again,” Ino complained, “we’ve been waiting for that place to open all year and you haven’t been once. We were all supposed to try it together! Now…”
Their voices faded away.
Naruto stood unseeing on the stairs.
OoOoOo
This was stupid.
This was incredibly dumb.
This was borderline stalkerish, but he couldn’t help himself.
He had to see for himself.
Tucked behind a bookshelf, pretending to read a book that was, unbeknown to him, turned upside down, Naruto prepared himself to view the of Gaara’s betrayal with his own eyes.
Two days he spent avoiding not just the redhead but his entire friend circle, making up excuse after excuse, not trusting himself to behave like a rational person. He couldn’t even look at Gaara without fighting scathing words on his tongue.
It didn’t occur to his distraught mind that seeing them together would initiate the eruption he’d been fighting for days.
He was running on instinct.
A wounded animal back into a corner.
And as they stepped through the library doors, that corner got even smaller.
They were talking quietly, but their bodies were disgusting close again. Gripping the book hard enough to rip it, Naruto watched as they took a seat in a quiet corner, opened a few text books and started reading. It was boring interaction to watch, and it should have calmed his hot temper, but as the minutes ticked by, as smiles were shared between the pair, he was slowly losing his patience. He couldn’t stand the lovey dovey aura the two exuded, their closeness was too painful for him to watch.
He’d seen enough.
It was time to go.
Clearly, Hinata was…happy with her new boyfriend.
As he re-shelved his book in the wrong spot and prepared to sneak out the back exit, he gave them one last pitiful glance.
They were standing now.
Hinata seemed…happy.
Excited even.
Smiling bigger, brighter than he’d ever seen in his life.
Then she moved, wrapping her hands around the redhead and in that instant, Naruto could no longer hold back.
He was moving before he realized.
“Hinata!”
His crush, ex-friend and the entire library turned at the sound of his voice.
“N-Naruto-kun?” Hinata murmured, turning confused eyes to his as she detangled herself from Gaara.
His vision tunneled and narrowed to one long figure, one single person.
“Naruto?” Gaara uttered, looking just as confused.
The determined blonde completely ignored the teen boy, reaching instead for the soft hands of the girl he loved, clasping them tightly in his grasp.
Staring down at her gorgeous face, blue depths burning, he shouted, “Hinata, I love you!”
Pearly depths, the most beautiful orbs he’d ever seen, widened, her lush mouth parted, and twin circles of crimson painted the apples of her cheeks.
She looked shell shocked.
Heart pounding against his ribcage, feeling mildly queasy, but determined to purge the feelings he’d carried for years from his heart, Naruto forged on.
“I know you’re dating Gaara, but I can’t hold back anymore, dattebayo! I’m in love with you! I’ve loved you since sixth grade! I wanted to tell you, I wanted to confess years ago but- woah, hey!”
He reached for her, wrapping his arms around her crumbling form, holding her tight to his chest.
She hadn’t fainted in years, years since he’d had to catch his delicate princess.
It was probably inappropriate to think this but this whole scene felt oddly nostalgic. Though this was a bit different than their junior high, she wasn’t unconscious more than a few seconds. He remembered waiting nearly ten minutes for sleeping beauty to rouse.
“You okay?” he questioned, concern eclipsing his nervous energy.
She stared at him with drooped eyes, her pupiless gaze dreamy.
“Y-yes…” she whispered.
He straightened, setting her on her feet, though he kept a hand pressed to the small of her back. He didn’t want her to fall again. She-
“N-Naruto-kun, Gaara and I aren’t dating.”
Hold on…
His brain was having a hard time processing, he turned the words around in his head again and again until he could discern their meaning.
Not…dating?
They weren’t-
What?
He blinked, certain he was hearing shit, that his desperate mind was making up the words she said. A memory flashed in his mind.
“But I heard you say yes when Sakura-chan asked if you had another date with Gaara!”
She blushed hard, but replied, “S-Sakura was only teasing me…I’ve…never dated anyone, and w-when I told her that I being tutored by a b-boy she started calling my sessions with Gaara d-dates to tease me. S-she always teases me more i-if I deny it so I just…play along.”
Teasing!
Sakura had been teasing her!
That meant-
“So you were hanging out so much just to study?” he could barely believe the words coming out of his mouth, “that’s all?”
She nodded, tapping her index fingers together, “just s-study sessions…or s-study dates as Sakura calls them.”
Study dates…
He’d run in here, made a complete fool of himself, confessed his deepest secret to the girl he loved, all over a…study date?
They weren’t dating dating.
They were studying…
He’d made a fool of himself…
…and confessed…
He confessed!
“Oh crap!” he shouted, startling the girl in his arms and the audience watching.
“Young man, this is a library, not the set of your own personal television drama,” a stout older man rebuked.
The school librarian stood glaring at the blond, tapping his foot with his arms crossed over his chest. He pointed abruptly to the exit.
“Out!”
He stumbled dazed and confused and embarrassed and everything else under the sun as Hinata drug him silently through a crowd of gossiping, giggling onlookers, his non-traitorous friend Gaara among them, and out the library doors.
He came to in the quiet hall, acutely aware he was alone with his dream girl after pulling the most idiotic stunt of the century.
It was time to face the music.
He just hoped she wasn’t gonna jump state to get away from him.
Steeling himself, he turned to the girl beside him, opened his mouth…
…and found himself tugged down in a mind melting meeting of soft lips. It took a moment for him to realized what the hell was going on.
It smacked him upside his oblivious head.
She was kissing him!
Hinata Hyuuga was laying a big wet one on him!
Before he could return the kiss, she pulled back, gazing up at him with a smile far, far brighter than the one she gave Gaara and said, “I love you too, Naruto-kun!”
OoOoOo
“I never said what kind of dating,” Sasuke threw out, flat onyx orbs staring into stormy blue, a single black brow raising as one of the oceanic pools began to twitch, “you assumed it was romantic. I never said that.”
Naruto cracked his knuckles.
He’d been betrayed alright, but by the wrong friend.
“Besides, I only said it to get you to make a move, instead of annoying me about it,” the brunette continued, unconcerned with the display of impending violence, “you’re welcome.”
OoOoOo
“Oh my God, Naruto! What happened honey?” Kushina shouted as her beat up son swept through the door, grinning like he wasn’t covered in bruises.
“I’m fine! Awesome, dattebayo!” the cheery blond boasted, dropping his bag and laughing.
Certain her sun was suffering a head injury, Kushina pushed and bullied him to the couch, sat him down and grabbed a med kit. This wasn’t the first time her boy had come home after a fight, he had her temper after all, but he’d never been this happy about it!
“Ma! You’ll never believe what happened today! I got a girlfriend!”
That was the last thing she expected him to say.
