Author's note: So to celebrate the fact that for now my thesis is finished (until I get the commentary) and because it's my birthday today - turning one year older biologically, still remaining mentally in the early twenties - I decided to be self-indulgent as hell and combine two of my favourite tropes in a twoshot! Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about my other projects, I just wanted to be somewhat self-indulgent :P Hope you won't mind!

Part 1
In a world where Beta made up the majority of the population, followed by Alpha, Omega were considered a rarity. Female Omega were already uncommon to begin with, but male Omega? They were incredibly rare, so rare that even in modern times having an Omega in your family was considered to be a blessing. Parents of whom one was an Omega themselves had slightly more chance to have an Omega child, but even that chance was considered to be quite small to nearly negligible.
Minato had already considered himself to be the luckiest person on earth when Kushina, an Omega, agreed to go on a date with him and had been besides himself when she accepted his proposal after dating for two years. This lovely, amazing, beautiful woman had granted him the honour of becoming her husband and on the day of their wedding he thought he would never be happier.
Then one year into their marriage Kushina became pregnant and gave birth to their beautiful, perfect son – who was an Omega just like his mum. Minato had never cared about the whole Class system, even if his own parents had been overjoyed when he had started dating Kushina, the only Omega in their village. He had fallen in love with her fiery temper, her beautiful long red hair and her drive to strive for everything she wanted, overcoming every obstacle in her way. That she was an Omega was nice, but it wasn't why he had started dating her. It was just a part of her, like her red hair and her pretty purple eyes and her bright grin whenever she greeted him when he arrived home.
Now that their son turned out to be an Omega as well … Even Minato realised that he was blessed beyond anyone's comprehension. To not only have an Omega as his wife, but also have an Omega son … Their family became the subject of envy for many in their village and they ended up moving to a more quiet place before Naruto turned one year old. They hadn't felt particularly unsafe in their old hometown and they had never been threatened, but Kushina had become tired of fending off jealous looks or worse, inquiries of families hoping to match their child to Naruto in the future – and that before Naruto had even made it to the toddler stage.
So they moved to a place that was much quieter, less filled with nosy people, and Minato took over the Uzumaki business in all its aspects, taking to it like a duck to water. That wasn't surprising, of course, when his own family had experience in this type of business, but the Uzumaki family was certainly a lot bigger in that regard and a hell of a lot more influential. Kushina was less interested in leading the top position, however, and as her parents hadn't wanted to give the position away to someone else, Minato had stepped up to the plate instead.
It made both parents a hell of a lot more cautious about who they allowed to be around their son, because in this type of world an Omega was considered to be even more valuable than they already were – and not always in a good way.
So they vetted everyone wanting to become close to Naruto and got rid of the people with less than good intentions. As a matter of fact, the youngest son of the Sabaku clan was ironically the first one to be approved as their son's friend. Ironic, because Gaara hailed from the same kind of family as Kushina and Minato did and that normally wasn't exactly the type of person they wanted to be around Naruto. Naruto, however, was just as stubborn as his mum and had befriended the red haired boy before either Kushina or Minato had even realised he had found a new friend.
They had been wary around Gaara at first, having the kids be followed whenever they went out, but as the months passed Gaara proved himself to be a true friend to Naruto, even jumping into the fray and defending Naruto when a lowlife thug had tried to kidnap Naruto from the playground.
"Told you Gaara is my best friend," Naruto huffed even as he shivered, burying himself deep into his mum's sweater.
"I know, and you were right," Kushina soothed, caressing his hair.
Minato, meanwhile, was taking care of the bleeding scratches Gaara had acquired during his fight with the thug. From what witnesses had told them, Gaara had been like a wildcat, scratching and biting and causing such a ruckus, the guy had been unable to go through with his plan. It was a miracle Gaara had got away with nothing but some scratches – by the time Minato would be through with the guy, he would wish he'd been just as lucky as the kid.
"You took a really huge risk, attacking the guy like that," Minato said calmly, carefully wiping away the blood on a scratch decorating Gaara's right arm. "You could have been severely hurt, he was carrying a gun too."
If the disinfectant wipe hurt him, Gaara didn't show it. Instead he just scowled and glared down at the grass. "He was going to hurt Naruto. I wasn't going to let him do that."
Minato smiled faintly. "Clearly. Who taught you how to fight like that?"
"Temari-nee-san," Gaara answered promptly. "She said scratching their eyes out and kicking them in the nuts is the best way to bring them down. She also said she'd teach me more once I'm older."
Minato winced slightly. "Well, she's not wrong," he acquiesced. No wonder she'd taken over leadership of the Sabaku clan if she was this vicious. "Still, though, you should be more careful. Things can always go wrong."
"He shouldn't have tried to hurt Naruto," Gaara said stubbornly as all kids that age were.
"Gaara, you okay?" Temari marched across the playground, her long coat flapping in the wind. Her usual stern face was edged with worry, even a hint of panic.
Minato didn't blame her. He hadn't exactly been a hundred percent calm either when he'd been informed that someone had tried to kidnap Naruto.
Gaara groaned, a bit peeved. "Yes, I'm okay. I did like you told me to, nee-san, I scratched and kicked him and he went down!"
"You taught him well," Minato smiled and covered the last scratch with a bandage. "There, keep an eye on the bandaged ones, those are a bit deeper than the rest. Wouldn't want them to get infected."
"Maybe I taught him too well," Temari muttered underneath her breath and then stepped into Minato's spot, fussing over her little brother.
Leaving Gaara to the mercy of his older sister, Minato went to his own little family where Naruto was calming down, playing with his mum's long hair.
"You're going to take care of him?" Kushina asked lowly; her eyes burning almost unholy.
The dark smile he gave her had her relaxing, a smile of her own playing around his lips. "Oh, I'll be taking care of him, don't you worry."
"Good, teach him to keep his hands to himself," she murmured and pecked his lips. "I'll take care of the boys in the meantime."
"Sounds like a good plan," he said grimly. His mind already travelled mentally to the place where Kakashi was taking the guy, pondering what he would to do to him.
Chores divided between the two of them, that was how they worked.
That was how they continued to work as Naruto grew up and started attracting attention of the more … romantically inclined variant.
As their only son, of course Kushina and Minato only wanted to best for Naruto and that included the best romantic partner he could have. Whether that would be a girl or a boy, that didn't matter to them as long as Naruto would be happy.
That didn't mean they would approve of just everybody, though, oh no. Definitely not. If someone wanted to date their son, they best prove they were worthy of him.
So the two of them had worked out a system: Kushina would vet all the girls interested in Naruto, Minato would take care of the guys. If they didn't make the cut, well, too bad, but that was the end of the line for them as far as the couple was concerned. Of course it would still be up to Naruto whether he wanted to go on with the person in question, but both Kushina and Minato had developed a good instinct for whom would be suitable for their son and who wouldn't be. Perks of the business, one could say.
The first one they tested was a timid girl named Hyuuga Hinata. Sweet and beautiful, yet didn't really stand out either, seeming to prefer to become one with the background instead. She'd been crushing on Naruto for a couple of years now and he had let himself be talked into a date with her thanks to some shared friends. As agreed upon, Kushina vetted her, taking her out for a shopping trip, just the two of them.
Minato knew this girl wasn't the one when upon arriving home Kushina greeted him with a kiss as usual, but also with slightly narrowed eyes.
"Not good?" he asked carefully, flicking his eyes to the ceiling where upstairs Naruto was walking around in his room.
"Too shy," she immediately scoffed, returning to the kitchen where the smell of their dinner wafted through the open door. "Doesn't have much of a backbone either, she's too much of a pushover for our son. Poor girl looked like she was either going to burst into flames or start crying the entire time."
He blinked. "Did you scare her that badly?"
"Oh please, I didn't even get to that part," she snorted and rolled her eyes. "That's how badly suited she is for our baby boy."
"Well, it's still Naruto's call," he said, because while they would vet every person, they also respected Naruto's decision.
Except if the person in question turned out to be a really rotten egg. In that case he and Kushina were going to take care of them, no matter what Naruto would do or say. They weren't going to let anyone hurt their son.
"Of course it is," she said and checked one of the cooking pots. "But I already know she won't last long. Naruto needs someone with a spine, someone who won't always give in just because. That girl won't give him what he needs, heed my words."
Kushina turned out to be right. A fourth date between Naruto and Hinata never happened and when asked, Naruto merely said they were better off as friends.
"She's too boring," was Gaara's more blunt and to the point explanation as he waited for Naruto to finish getting ready so they could leave for school. "Told him there was no point in dating her when she can't even look him in the eye without nearly fainting, but he wanted to give her a chance."
"You've got a good eye," Kushina said approvingly even as she watched on amused how Minato struggled with his tie.
Normally he didn't have much of an issue with ties, but this one was being particularly stubborn for a reason and he seriously considered just going without one today.
"Maybe we should have you vet them first," Minato suggested jokingly, but when he looked up, Gaara had a thoughtful look on his face.
"I wouldn't mind," he said and shrugged. "I'm looking out for him anyways."
"And we really appreciate that," Kushina smiled warmly and then finally deigned it time to help her poor husband with his evil tie. "Come here, let me help you. I'm honestly surprised she dared to be around you. I've heard they consider you to be quite intimidating." That was addressed to Gaara again, who rolled his eyes.
"They're all idiots," he muttered, crossing his arms.
Minato wasn't sure whether they were indeed all idiots or just had basic common sense, because even at fourteen years old, Gaara already had quite the intimidating aura surrounding him. No wonder, that, when he was both an Alpha and part of the main branch of the Sabaku family. Him being friends with Naruto at least kept the more unsavoury people at bay at the moment. That might change in the future, of course, but for now people knew better than to harass Naruto.
"All right, I'm ready!" Naruto called out cheerfully, thumping down the stairs.
That was the end of that particular conversation.
But not the end of Minato's and Kushina's vetting process.
The second girl dating their son was a pink haired girl named Haruno Sakura. She had exactly the type of backbone that Hyuuga had lacked – perhaps a bit too much, because when Kushina returned from their girls only trip, her face was an absolute thundercloud and even Minato felt somewhat apprehensive about approaching her. She looked ready to snap someone's neck any moment and the fact that he had witnessed her almost doing that once was not exactly helping him become more confident in approaching her.
"She's a bitch who doesn't deserve Naruto at all," she announced, literally kicking off her heels before marching into the living room, going straight for the liquor cabinet. The shot of sake disappeared so quickly in her mouth, he wasn't even sure whether there had been sake in the shot glass to begin with.
"Anything in particular happened?" he finally dared to ask.
Naruto was currently at Gaara's place, playing videogames, which was good, because Kushina looked like she was going to start on a rant soon, which might include words that Minato wasn't sure he was old enough yet to hear, let alone their son.
"Her entire demeanour just made my fucking skin crawl," Kushina growled and slammed back another shot before closing the cabinet roughly. "And the way she kept eying all those men on the street? Fucking wanted to stab her eyes out just so she would stop gawking at them."
"I mean, nothing wrong perse with looking," he hedged. "I've seen you look at Kakashi too – nothing wrong with that!" he hastened to add, before she would get the wrong idea.
"Sure, I look at Kakashi occasionally," she agreed easily to his surprise. "But I don't fucking drool over him and I don't stare at him for minutes on end, because I've got you and I don't need anyone else. This girl, though? She had her eyes glued on every pretty guy that crossed our path today and there was nothing respectful about the way she gawked. For fuck's sake, I was literally right next to her, the mother of the guy she's dating! A bit more respect would have been appreciated!"
"So … No approval."
If eyes could shoot fire, hers definitely would be doing that right now. "No. Fucking. Approval."
All right, that was clear.
Haruno didn't last too long after that particular trip. Naruto didn't seem that bothered by it.
After Haruno Naruto started dating a guy for the first time and immediately upon meeting him, Minato realised he wouldn't like him. At all. Every instinct in him – both parental and non-parental – screamed that this guy was bad news and to get Naruto away from him right this very instant.
But they had sworn that Naruto would have the final say, so Minato agreed to take the guy, Yakushi Kabuto, on a fishing trip. Fishing always relaxed him, because it allowed his mind to calm down for once and the place he went to was always quiet, almost desolated.
Perfect for interrogating the guy who turned out to belong to a yakuza clan which was more of an enemy than a simple rival to the Uzumaki clan. Minato had asked Kakashi to do some digging in Yakushi's background, not only because he was several years older than his seventeen year old son, but also because the first look at him had Minato tasting something foul. He'd learnt to trust his gut instincts over the years and already had a feeling this guy was bad news, even before Kakashi delivered him an entire file on the guy.
"You a fan of fishing, Kabuto-san?" Minato questioned nonchalantly, throwing his line into the water. The surface, clear until just now, rippled gently, small circles growing large and larger before they petered out.
Aside from the buzzing of some insects and the rustling in the trees high above them, they were all alone.
"I've never really considered it, sir," Yakushi replied politely, adjusting his glasses. "My father wasn't exactly the type to go fishing with me." He smiled wryly.
No, ending up in prison on charges of torture and kidnapping didn't really leave much room to take one's son out for fishing, Minato supposed.
"Well, I like it," Minato said and leant forwards, bracing his elbows on his knees as he studied the water. The chair next to him creaked quietly when Yakushi shifted a fraction. "Gives me some time to put my mind to rest, you know? The quietness of this place really helps calming me down."
"I can definitely understand that. This place is rather gorgeous," Yakushi agreed, looking around. Bushes were wildly teeming between the row of trees and everywhere one looked they could see splashes of colour, flowers dotting the sea of grass, breaking up the dark green colour.
"You know what else I like about this place?" Minato continued affably, still looking at the water. "Just how deep the water is. Deep enough that somebody will not be found for many years if the proper measures are taken."
"Sir?" Yasushi said slowly, apprehensively.
Good, he better be apprehensive, the smarmy son of a bitch.
Minato placed his rod on the support and turned to Yasushi, who was eyeing him warily while still trying to appear nonchalant. "If you think for one second that I have no idea who you are, you are sorely mistaken, Kabuto-san," he said, still smiling.
He leant closer, lowering his voice. "And if you think for one second that you can get your filthy paws on my son and take him away, you are even more of an idiot than the one you call your leader."
"Excuse me?" Yakushi started outraged. "I have no idea what you're - " He shut up when Minato, quick as a flash, pressed a dagger against his stomach, the sharp tip resting precariously close to his groin.
"I know you belong to the Sound clan," Minato said calmly, but inside he was seething. He must not be doing a good job of covering his rage completely, because Yakushi recoiled as far as he dared to, with the dagger still resting against him. "I know the Sound clan has been trying for years to get their disgusting hands on my son. I know it's not a coincidence that you suddenly started dating my son now. And I know you know that you're fucked now."
"I don't …" Yakushi swallowed. Some beads of sweat welled up around his hairline.
"You're going to stay away from my son," Minato continued, pressing the dagger just the tiniest smidgen deeper into the bastard's belly. "You and the rest of that sorry clan of yours will stay the fuck away from my family. Because if you don't, I will find you and what I will do to you will not be pretty or fun in the slightest."
He leant closer still, looking at the bastard coldly. "You and your clan are nothing but cockroaches who are only still alive because I let you. Don't ever for one moment think you survived all these years because you were smart. No, it's because I let you, because I wasn't interested in small guys like you. This little stunt you're trying to pull, though? This has you and your clan on my radar big time – and you best pray I never decide the pinging on my radar needs attending to."
He drew back slowly, enjoying the way Yakushi was trembling. "Remember, Yakushi, stay the fuck away from my son or you won't even get the chance to join your old pops in jail."
He put some of his best men on the Sound clan's tail. Yakushi and Orochimaru had the honour of being dealt with personally by Minato when Orochimaru decided not to heed the warning after all and tried to abduct Naruto when he'd been walking home from the grocery story.
The police rounded up the remaining members of the Sound clan, having finally received enough evidence from an anonymous source to bring them all to court. They were never able to find Yakushi or Orochimaru, however, and their anonymous source disappeared into the void.
When Naruto was twenty-three he started dating a man again. After Yakushi and his foul betrayal, Naruto hadn't been terribly interested in dating for a while, stung by what Yakushi had been attempting to do to him. He had instead focused on his studies and his friends, having all the fun he could have even if that was whilst being single.
But then one day, he came home with a silly grin on his face and his cheeks suspiciously flushed and both Minato and Kushina knew instantly what was going on.
Their baby boy was in love – and this time it seemed more serious than all his relationships before.
So serious in fact that Naruto didn't even protest when Minato announced he wanted to take the guy out on a fishing trip to get to know him better. That surprised both him and Kushina, because all the times before Naruto had huffed about their tendency to be 'overly protective' and 'scaring his dates to death'.
"So he might be the one then, huh?" Kushina teased, nudging Naruto's side as they did the dishes. "Think he's strong enough to withstand your dad's interrogation?"
Naruto rolled his eyes, but nevertheless grinned and dumped the pan in the soapy water. "Oh hell yeah, bastard won't be a pushover, you'll see."
"I hear a challenge," Minato remarked, even as his curiosity grew.
What kind of man could bring out that kind of blush on his kid's face even when not being physically present? Minato couldn't wait to find out.
When the doorbell rang on Saturday and Minato opened the door, revealing Naruto's boyfriend, a handsome black haired man with piercing black eyes, Minato was presented with a conundrum for the first time since he could remember.
He couldn't get a read of the guy. At all.
How very peculiar …
