Magical Time of the Year
"So you're working with Gaara-kun then?" Kushina questioned curiously, playing with the ear of her mug.
Her son nodded and smiled. "Yeah, he can use the extra set of hands and I like working with plants, so that was an easy decision." Naruto shrugged and pursed his lips. "Besides, it was time I got back to work, even if it's not my old one."
"Well, I doubt you'll have to do it for the money," she teased him lightly, which made him snicker.
"Don't make the bastard hear you, he'll consider you on his side then," he scoffed, but was still amused. "He hasn't really been subtle about the part that I don't need to work if I don't want to."
No, with the high position Naruto's boyfriend had in the company, they definitely wouldn't have to worry about money problems. Naruto had his own pride, though, and he had never been the type to remain idle. As a matter of fact, back when he'd been a child, she often had to threaten him with tying him to the bed just to get him to rest when he was ill.
"Nothing wrong with that," she reasoned.
"No, but not doing anything isn't something for me either," Naruto denied. "And like I said, it's fun work; I like working with plants."
"As long as you're happy," Kushina agreed, smiling, and checked her watch. "I've got to leave now, honey. I still need to stop by the store to pick up some things for dinner tonight."
"All right, we're still on for this weekend?" They both rose up; their chairs scraping backwards.
"Of course we are. It's been a while since we last saw Sasuke-kun and your dad's been eager for a rematch of checkers," she chuckled, shaking her head. Her husband was really too competitive even if he didn't want to admit that.
"We'll have to find something to occupy ourselves with then," Naruto snickered, because his boyfriend could be just as competitive even if he remained stoic on the outside.
When they were in the hallway, Naruto made a detour, ducking into the living room with a "Wait, mum, I got something for you still."
While waiting for her son to return she pulled on her coat, her scarf and donned her gloves, switching the slippers for her shoes.
"Here, for you." Naruto came back into the hallway, carrying a soft white teddy bear with a purple tie around his neck.
Kushina softened at the sight of it; a twinge of sadness making her swallow. "You're sure you want to give it to me?"
"Yeah, I am. Thought this one was cute, what do you think?" Naruto grinned, waggling the bear back and forth before holding it out to her.
"It's really cute," she agreed and accepted the stuffed toy. "Thanks, sweetheart. I'll see you this Saturday, okay?""
"Yeah, we'll see you this Saturday."
They hugged each other before she walked out to her car. Naruto remained in the doorway while she got in her car, settling behind the wheel. After putting both her purse and the teddy bear on the passenger's seat, she waved one more time at Naruto, who waved back, and then she was off, driving back home.
"Since when are you into teddy bears?" Minato questioned confused, making Kushina look up from cutting the last part of the cucumber.
She was almost done preparing dinner when he arrived home and he'd clearly found the teddy bear she'd left behind on the table in the living room.
"I'm not, Naruto gave that one to me when I visited him this afternoon," she replied and went back to cutting the cucumber.
The silence that followed was a tad loaded, making her purse her lips.
"He's still buying them?" he asked softly. "You think he's still …"
"He's back to being the old one," she instantly denied. "You've seen him the previous time, he managed to give it a place."
"The teddy bear?"
She shrugged, dumping the cucumber pieces in the salad bowl. "I don't know, I think at this point it's just comforting to him? Or maybe he just likes them, nothing wrong with that."
"There isn't," Minato agreed and he put the teddy bear on the windowsill for now. "I just worry about him and Sasuke-kun, you know? After all that …" he trailed off, grimacing.
She stepped forwards to hug him and kissed him. "I know, but I really do believe they managed to give this a place and are moving on."
"I hope so," he sighed and embraced her back. "It was beyond awful seeing them so …" He trailed off, looking lost for words and annoyed with it, but she knew what he was trying to say.
Because it was exactly how she had felt after every single time. Feeling lost and helpless, being forced to watch how their only son and his boyfriend became lost in their own head after losing baby after baby.
Four times Naruto had miscarried so far. Being the owner of the special MP gen didn't mean that every pregnancy was a guaranteed success as sadly had been proven in Naruto's case. It was agonising to see her son in so much pain, knowing that she couldn't do much to help him bar offer all the support she could give him and Sasuke.
One of Naruto's friends, Gaara, had ended up giving him a teddy bear as a form of support and since then Naruto had got into the habit of buying more teddy bears whenever a special one caught his eye. They seemed to help him somewhat, allow him to give his grief a place, and over the last two months he and Sasuke had managed to drag themselves out of that dark hole they had fallen in. They would obviously never forget their lost babies, but they were allowing themselves to be happy again and that was all that mattered in the end.
"He's got nice taste in teddy bears, though," Minato commented offhandedly, making her snort.
"Of course he has, he's got his good taste from me," she smirked, laughing when he smacked her butt.
"Come on, let's go eat."
"You went to the bakery?" Minato inquired curiously when Naruto showed up with a white box in his hands, followed by Sasuke.
It being weekend, Sasuke wasn't wearing a suit; instead he'd chosen to wear a black sweater and jeans, his leather jacket unzipped.
"Glad you two could come over," Kushina smiled, hugging them quickly, careful not to crush the box.
"Hi, mum," Naruto smiled. "And no, dad, I made a batch of cupcakes this morning, but it ended up being a bit too much, so I'm bringing some over. Hope you don't mind."
"Otherwise it's too late already, because we brought the cupcakes with us," Sasuke said dryly. He didn't even flinch when Naruto smacked his arm in retaliation.
"I'm not a bad baker," he insisted, pouting.
"You're definitely not," Minato agreed, already holding out his hands to accept the box. "Though I don't know where you got the talent from, considering baking is not your mum's strongest skill," he added teasingly, winking at Kushina.
She poked his shoulder petulantly. "You got any complaints about my dessert skills?"
"Of course not, honey, you're amazing at baking," he soothed her, but his blue eyes were laughing and she poked him harder for good measure this time.
"Which flavour is it?" she asked, settling down on the arm of Minato's chair, while Naruto and Sasuke sat down on the couch after they'd removed their jackets.
"Chocolate, but I played around with some coloured frosting," Naruto replied, gesturing to the box. "I haven't worked with colours before, so I figured I might as well try it out now."
"You also tried out your decorating skills, I see," Minato said amused when he removed the lid of the box.
Inside were six cupcakes; three of them were blue, the others pink and they each had a smile face drawn in the opposite colour of it.
Naruto shrugged and scratched the bridge of his nose. "I was having a bit of fun," he admitted bashfully.
"The kitchen looked like a warzone," Sasuke snorted, resting an arm around Naruto's shoulders.
"I cleaned it up," Naruto said exasperatedly and scowled at him. "And it wasn't that bad!"
"There was frosting on the cupboards – which are on the other side of the kitchen," Sasuke deadpanned. "You call that normal cooking?"
"I cleaned it up!"
Kushina smiled and picked a pink cupcake from the box, settling in to watch her son and his boyfriend bickering for at least five more minutes. She was willing to bet she'd find them later on in the kitchen, kissing each other silly. Even after having been best friends since they were five and getting together four years ago, they were still obviously ridiculously in love and it was so cute to watch them bickering while they tried to keep their smiles from their faces.
Of course they would deny they were being cute; they'd denied that ever since she'd called the both of them cute when they were eight years old.
Typical boys.
Naruto 08.35 p.m.
Which name do you think is cuter? Eiko or Kiko?
Kushina blinked, tearing her attention fully away from the television.
Me 08.35 p.m.
Why? What are you doing?
"Who's texting?" Minato asked curiously, twirling a strand of her red hair absently around his finger.
"Naruto is," she replied absently, curling up closer against him.
Even with the heating on a nearly blazing setting – she got cold quickly during the winter, okay! – it was much more comfortable – and preferable – to snuggle with her husband on the couch while they watched their favourite detective show.
Naruto 08.37 p.m.
Trying to settle an argument with the bastard here!
She rolled her eyes and snorted. Of course it was something like that; she should have seen it coming, honestly. This wasn't the first time he texted her out of the blue with some random crap, just to settle some argument he was having with Sasuke at the time. She had no idea why they would be arguing about female names of all things, but she'd long since given up trying to figure out how their minds worked.
Me 08.38 p.m.
Kiko sounds cuter.
Naruto 08.38 p.m.
HAH! TOLD HIM!
She shook her head, fondly exasperated, and turned back to the show. Honestly, those two …
They had a small Christmas party at Naruto's and Sasuke's place. The food was as always amazing and there was a pretty decorated Christmas tree in the corner of the living room, presents strewn around it. Sasuke and Naruto would be visiting Sasuke's parents the day before New Year's and both families would come together to visit the local temple for New Year's Day. It would be nice to see Mikoto again, they really should make more time free to see each other.
"I want you to open your present first," Naruto grinned after dinner, handing her an envelope before offering a second one to Minato. "And then you've got to open yours second."
"There's an order we need to follow?" Minato asked amused, raising an eyebrow.
"Yes, a very important order," Naruto nodded seriously and sat down on Sasuke's lap, who easily linked his arms around his waist.
She shared a glance with Minato and then shrugged, excitement bubbling up in her. No matter how old she would become, getting presents was always fun, especially if they were from her family.
Opening the envelope had her retrieving a card from it. The front of it had a cute heart in pastel pink drawn on it and she opened it, curious what the inside would be. Strangely the inside of the card only bore a single sentence, written in a wobbly handwriting that resembled a kid's handwriting more than an adult's.
"I wish for the best grandparents in the world," she read aloud, completely befuddled. "I don't get it, why is this written in a kid's handwriting?"
Naruto simply smiled and gestured for Minato to open his envelope, which he did, a slight frown on his face. She felt rather than saw him freeze and she instantly leant over, a bit alarmed at how blank his face had become.
Ringing filled her ears when she realised what she was looking at. A single print clutched between Minato's fingers, showing off a –
"Is this …" she couldn't get further than that, her breath hitching and something blocked her throat.
Naruto's face softened while Sasuke rested his chin on Naruto's shoulder. "I'm fourteen weeks pregnant, mum," he smiled softly, but his eyes and his tone were brimming with excitement as he rested a hand on his stomach. "We found out six weeks ago, but we thought this might make a nice Christmas present for you – even though this baby isn't exactly a Christmas baby." He laughed quietly.
"Wait, those cupcakes and that stupid question you sent me – were you trying to give us a hint?" Kushina asked shocked.
"Yeah, I figured it might be fun to see if you could figure it out before you got the present. Same with the teddy bear," he grinned. "You didn't in the end, which was a bit surprising, but that makes this present the best, don't you think?"
"Oh my god, I'm going to become a grandma," she breathed out, realisation fully settling in now.
She was going to be a grandma soon. They were going to have a grandchild!
"Holy shit, you're expecting a baby!" she exclaimed and jumped up, going over to give Naruto a tight hug, dragging Sasuke into it as well. "You're going to be parents, holy crap!"
"Yes, we are," Naruto laughed, but his eyes were suspiciously damp now. "What do you think, dad? Ready to become a grandpa finally?"
"You bet I am," Minato grinned, but there was a sheen of tears forming in his eyes and he quickly wiped them away, laughing. "This is honestly the best Christmas gift we've ever got."
"Definitely!" she agreed and hugged the both of them again, unable to completely contain her excitement.
Knowing that next year they would have a beautiful, cute grandchild to spoil rotten? No Christmas gift would ever top this amazing news!
It was indeed a very magical time of the year! The best time of the year!
The End
AN2: I know it's nothing too long, but I figured this would make for a nice Christmas fic? I don't know, my brain is mush at this point.
