Author's note: Second Halloween fic of the night, don't get used to this every year ;) For the ones waiting for Naruto's pov of The New Guy: don't worry, I'm working on it. That one just takes a bit longer to write, given the theme. Also yes, other updates will also happen soon, I promise. My mind's just a mess, sorry.
PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE WARNINGS. This is quite a dark fic with heavy themes, so please heed them.
Warnings: Koharu's pov and Naruto's at the end; Alternate universe; character deaths; explicit child abuse; animal cruelty; violence; dark; animal death; offensive slurs
I hope you'll like this! (Which sounds so wrong, given the heavy themes, sorry)
In the Dead of Night
Koharu had never been interested in having children, which had made her stand out in her village, she knew. Especially because she had married a good man, Danzo, who had had his fair share of women he could have chosen. Instead he had married Koharu and had never made an issue about the fact that she didn't want children of their own.
Children were loud, messy, and unruly and she had discovered early on that she didn't have the patience to deal with them. She didn't want to waste at least eighteen years of her life to cater to some ungrateful brat, no thank you.
Their friends and family had often lamented their decision, saying how wonderful parents they would have been, but Koharu could not be swayed.
Instead of chasing after messy brats, she joined several committees, which ranged from the group responsible for organising the yearly festival to a simple baking group where she exchanged recipes with other housewives. As the years went on, her old age started to catch up to her a bit and regretfully she had to cut down on the amount of groups she attended. She and Danzo started talking about moving somewhere else, somewhere a bit warmer perhaps; a beautiful place where they could relax for the rest of their lives.
Then a house in their neighbourhood went up in flames and somehow she and her husband ended up taking care of the sole survivor: a baby boy of two years old. His name was Uzumaki Naruto and he had been the first child of Namikaze Minato and Uzumaki Kushina. The young couple had moved here three years ago, settling down after Namikaze had found a job at the local school.
Koharu had never really talked with the couple; sometimes they would pass each other on the street and then they would exchange a friendly nod, but that was about it. She could remember thinking how loud the young boy was already, always babbling loudly with screeching masked as laughter.
And now that same kid had ended up at their house, because the police couldn't find any living relatives and the couple was so well known and loved in their community that everyone had been immediately convinced that the boy would be best off with Koharu and Danzo. Knowing how respected they were, how much the people looked up to them, Koharu found it impossible to refuse their request. That wouldn't reflect well on them, refusing to take care of a recently orphaned toddler, and so they begrudgingly accepted the kid in their home.
From the very first moment Naruto set foot inside their house, the little boy would come to know just how very much Koharu disliked children.
He had exchanged the flames for those of a whole new sort of hell he would soon discover – and help would never come.
They ended up moving to an entirely different town when the boy was six years old. People were becoming far too noisy for Koharu's liking, questioning when the boy would attend school, why he often had so many bruises on his legs, why they could often hear him crying so much.
Trauma, they were told. Even four years later the kid was still having nightmares about his house on fire. Those bruises? Well, he was a rowdy boy just like any other kid! Try to keep him still, it wouldn't work, such energy he had!
Yamada laughed in agreement, knowing from experience just how much little boys could roughhouse. They were always bruising so easily, she agreed, and she'd told them time and time again to be careful before they would trip and hurt themselves, but did they listen? No, of course not!
People, parents, understood, but still there were glances, little glimpses brimming with growing suspicion whenever the boy was outside. Presumptuous bastards, the lot of them. Who were they to try to stick their nose where it didn't belong? The boy needed to be disciplined because he refused to listen, refused to behave like Koharu had tried to teach him over and over again. She and her husband had been so generous as to take the boy in their home after his parents had perished and he thanked them by acting out of line every single day. So yes, he got disciplined. Got the cane when he acted out foully and was locked up when he persisted in his horrible behaviour. If he got lippy, he earnt himself ten extra slashes with the belt.
Children needed to learn how to behave; they needed to be taught that they weren't the boss, their guardians were. That was what was wrong with the youth nowadays: their parents had become too soft, too eager to be their children's friend instead of their damn parent. But that wasn't going to happen in her home, oh no! She and her husband were going to make sure the brat knew how to behave like a decent kid even if it killed him!
She was firm in her opinion that they weren't doing anything wrong, but the neighbours were starting to become too noisy for her liking, too focused on how the boy looked like whenever he was permitted to be outside, so they moved.
They moved to a small town several miles from their hometown, one were the houses were so spread out that it would take at least five minutes of running to reach the nearest neighbour. It was a quant, quiet place; one where people kept to themselves and the area was peaceful; nature here still not been taken over by the nasty city life.
It was perfect for them. The lack of close neighbours made it easier to discipline the boy whenever he acted out and while the basement was too small to act as a decent storage, it still had its use. It made for a great place to lock the kid inside if he was behaving very badly and the cane just wouldn't be enough. The boy hated dark places with a passion and could often be heard screaming and crying, banging at the door and begging to be let outside, but they let him stew there for as long as needed.
Because they were his guardians and they knew what was best for him.
"The kid's been talking to something, did you know?" Danzo inquired one morning, sipping from his tea.
They had been living here for a month now and they were settling in quite nicely if Koharu had to be honest. The street remained peaceful; the handful of cars passing by each day could be counted on one hand and their car made it easy to go into the town and buy groceries. She was thinking of rearranging the garden somewhat, perhaps add some plants that would do well during the winter.
At hearing the comment, she turned to him and frowned. "No, I didn't. You're sure it's to something and not to himself?"
The boy often talked to himself; as long as he wasn't too loud, she didn't care what he said. Better to himself than whining her ears off.
He shook his head. "I thought so at first, but I stood there listening last night and it didn't sound like the inane chattering he usually does."
"You don't think he brought some kind of filthy animal inside the house, do you?" She curled up her lip in distaste.
The gods help that boy if he had brought some disgusting animal inside their home! He knew he wasn't allowed any sort of pet because he'd proven time and time again that he hadn't earnt that privilege! And now he thought he could just sneak an animal inside and they wouldn't notice it? They might be getting older, but they weren't dumb!
"It sounds like he did," Danzo said and his lips thinned. "Are you going to deal with this or should I? I don't want you to stress yourself out too much, dealing with that little bastard."
"No, it's fine. I'll deal with it," she said firmly and rose up. "Clearly he needs some lessons reinforced."
As she walked upstairs, the boy's voice drifted through the crack in his door. In a hushed tone she could hear him say, "You look so cool! Think you can - "
The wooden floorboard creaked underneath her feet and the boy shut up immediately, making her smile grimly. Yes, he was right to be worried now, but it was too late.
In just a couple of strides she was at the door and flung it open, watching the boy scramble backwards, shoving something underneath his bed.
"Who were you talking to?" she asked coldly, staring at the brat.
His blond hair was as unruly as ever; a true thorn in her eye. The kid was six years old for god's sake, how could he still not brush his own hair?
"N-nobody," he stuttered, getting up immediately.
"You think I'm dumb, boy?"
"No, no, I don't think that!" He hastily shook his head back and forth; fear settling in his eyes.
"Clearly you do, because you're lying to me," she said icily. "Who were you talking? Speak up!"
But the boy was as stubborn as ever and kept quiet – there was a first for everything, she supposed snidely, because usually she couldn't get him to shut up.
She marched to the bed, slapping him across the face when he tried to lunge forwards. Her slap sent him flying against the wall, making him cry out.
"Oh shut up, you damn pansy!" she snapped and snatched a box from underneath the bed. It was an old shoe box; one of his from back when he had outgrown his first pair and they had been forced to buy him new ones before people would start asking questions.
She ripped off the lid and disgust instantly filled her when she spotted the small frog inside the box. The disgusting animal was crouched down on top of some moss, trying to blend in with it.
"What did I tell you about animals inside my house?" she demanded, clutching the box tightly.
The boy sniffled. "T-that I – that I can't have them be-because I'm a ba-bad boy. I – I wasn't going to keep him, promise! I – I wanted to place him in the – in the creek!"
"Time and time again you refuse to learn the most simple of rules and I'm getting sick of your behaviour, boy!" she hissed. "I'm not going to say this again: no animals inside my house!"
She grabbed the frog, threw it down on the floor and stamped down on it relentlessly even as the boy wailed and screamed and tried to push her away. With his next push, she snatched his arm and smacked him across the face again, harshly.
"You want something to cry about, I can give you that!" she snarled and with another ear-ringing slap she pushed him down on the ground and shoved his face in the mess, rubbing it in for good measure.
"That's what you get for ignoring the rules, you little bastard! You're going to stay here in your room and think about what you've done! You better pray I'll be in a better mood soon or else you won't get to eat for the entire weekend!"
She slammed the door shut and locked it with the key she carried around with her; fury still coursing through her veins as she made a beeline for the bathroom to rid her hands of that disgusting gunk. Let's see if that little shit would try something like this again!
Because he obviously didn't deserve the privilege they had graciously given him, the next day she and Danzo stripped his room of everything, leaving only a futon and his wardrobe behind.
While her husband carried one of the boxes downstairs, she picked up some drawings from the floor, narrowing her eyes at them. The kid had drawn himself obviously, ugly as his drawing skills were, the blond hair was a dead giveaway. In every drawing, however, there was someone else next to him, a taller person with black hair and black eyes.
"Don't throw them away, please. He won't like that," the kid pleaded, but at least he knew better than to move from his spot in the corner until he got permission.
"Who the hell are you talking about?" she grunted. He couldn't be talking about Danzo, because he would never want to keep something the brat had made.
"Sasuke. He – he's going to be angry," he replied in a small voice.
Oh god, really? She rolled her eyes and crumpled the papers together, throwing them in the bin. So the kid was now entertaining himself with imaginary friends, great. Clearly he was determined to be as pathetic as he could possibly be.
"I don't give a shit what you or your imaginary friend want," she said bluntly. "If you would just follow the rules and stop behaving like such a brat, then we wouldn't have to do these things. You can get things back once you finally learn how to behave."
Given how slow on the uptake he was, that would probably take years, she considered amused as she dumped the contents of the bin in the garbage bag. There were times when she wished she knew more about his family; something like mental deficiency had to run in his family with how the kid acted at times.
One would think that after losing all his possessions and spending a night in the pitch black basement, the kid would have learnt his lesson, but of course he hadn't.
A particularly loud thunder clap woke Koharu up in the middle of the night and she groaned, rubbing her eyes. A bolt of lightening momentarily lit up part of their room, slipping through a gap in the curtains, and that was when she saw it.
A dark shadow slipping past their bedroom and descending the staircase quietly. A silent hiss escaped her and she sat up, realising the brat was about to steal some food most likely. Did he really think he would be able to do that secretly? Even if she hadn't woken up just now, they would surely notice any food missing!
"Stupid brat," she muttered darkly and stuffed her feet in her slippers, pulling on her robe.
What she wouldn't give to dump the kid somewhere, but unfortunately the service which had dumped the kid with them tended to visit them once a year to keep track of the kid's development or some shit like that. The visits should lessen once he got older, but for now they had to put up with it and that meant they couldn't send the kid packing just yet.
"What do you think you're doing?" she asked coolly, watching how the boy jumped in fright.
He slammed the fridge door shut as if she hadn't just caught him red-handed now.
He whirled around, staring at her with wide eyes. "I – I was just – I just was going to drink some water," he squeaked.
"You can drink water from the tap," she said and walked towards him; satisfaction flaring up when he hastily shuffled backwards. "But that wasn't your real intention, was it? You were going to steal our food."
"No, I wasn't!" he protested, whining when she pinched his ear and tugged viciously at it.
"You know how much I hate it when you lie!" she snarled and snatched his wrist before he could attempt to run away. "Every day it's something with you and I'm getting sick of your shit! Why the hell can't you just behave for one week!"
"No, please, don't put me there, I'll be good, please!" he begged when he realised just where she was dragging him to.
"What the hell is going on here?" Danzo snapped, descending the last step of the staircase.
"This brat," she shook him roughly about, "thought he could get away with stealing our food so he needs to be taught another lesson!"
"The cane?"
"No, another trip to the basement might make him remember his manners," she said grimly.
He recoiled when she glared at him. "I should damn well break your fingers for daring to touch what isn't yours. Be glad I'm this merciful!"
She ripped open the door to the basement and pushed him down, uncaring that he tumbled down the stairs and smacked his head against the wall, making him cry out in pain. They were only five steps, it wasn't going to kill the kid. Obviously he was too thick-headed for that.
"He's getting more and more unruly," Danzo murmured distastefully while she locked the door.
"I know," she nodded, throwing another glare at the closed door. "Kid needs to start learning his place. We'll beat it into him if we have to. If he thinks he's been punished badly before, he won't know what's coming next to him if he keeps up this shit."
"He should be glad you're still so patient with him," Danzo sighed and drew her closer for a kiss. "I don't know how you do it, my dear."
"Years of practice thanks to dealing with some of the more dim-witted women," she said dryly, smiling when he chuckled.
Right as she slipped back underneath the covers, something seemed to move right outside the room. Frowning, she peered into the darkness, but didn't see anything amiss. Must have been a bird that flew past their window right as the lightening happened again, probably.
It wasn't as if it could have been the kid, after all.
The boy truly seemed intent on testing the limits of their patience. When he wasn't being a whiney brat, he was talking to his imaginary friend in his room. They'd been determined to ignore it at first, because what did it matter that the kid had decided to be pathetic?
But the constant talking and giggling was starting to grate on her nerves. Even with nothing left in his room, he seemed to enjoy himself immensely, which only made her more pissed off, because what was the point of this particular punishment if the kid was still enjoying himself?
Still she tried to ignore him. If he wanted to talk to an imaginary being, let him do it, as long as he remembered his place here.
"You know another benefit of living so secluded here?" Danzo smiled, changing the channel on the television. "No annoying kids to deal with who want to go Trick or Treating."
Koharu snorted, stretching her back when she rose up from the couch. "I'll say. I never understand why parents let their kids participate in it. It's not like Halloween is part of our tradition."
Today was Halloween and up until last year this day would have annoyed the hell out of her, if only because it had forced her to deal with kids ringing their doorbell and demanding sweets. But now they lived so secluded that no kid would stop by their house tonight and they could enjoy their night in peace.
"I'm going to wash some clothes before the stains don't come out anymore," she announced and shuffled to the small room they had designated as the laundry room and where the washing machine and the dryer had been stored.
Humming to herself, she separated the clothes into dark and light, pausing when she picked up the boy's shirt. There seemed to be some hairs scattered across the stomach area and she held the cloth in the light to inspect them better. They were almost black, so it couldn't be his own hair and they were remarkably short. Both she and her husband had started greying years ago, so it couldn't be their hair either – presuming that they were even in the habit of hugging the boy for their hair to land on his clothes.
So if it wasn't theirs nor the boy's, whose hair was it then?
"It can't be," she muttered and narrowed her eyes in suspicion. He couldn't actually be this stupid after what had happened last time, right?
But he had been suspiciously quick lately to go to his room and while she never saw him eat much, his plate was always empty …
"That goddamn, good for nothing brat!" she cursed and rushed upstairs.
"Where is it?" she demanded the second she opened the door.
The boy jumped from his bed, eyes wide and full of guilt, even as he denied, "I – I don't know what you're talking about."
"Oh you damn well know it!" she growled and stormed over to him. "Where's the animal you've been keeping here, huh? Think I wouldn't notice it?" She smacked him across the face hard.
"Think I wouldn't see the damn fur on your clothes?" Another smack, sending him flying against the wardrobe.
The closet rattled slightly and in the silence which followed, a protesting mewl could be heard.
He was keeping a damn cat.
"NO,NO, YOU CAN'T HAVE HIM!" the boy screamed, barricading the wardrobe with his body. "You can't touch him, I won't let you! You can't hurt him!"
"YOU DON'T GET TO TELL ME WHAT I CAN AND CAN'T DO, BOY!" she snarled and gripped him by his throat, slamming his head against the door. "YOU THINK YOU CAN ORDER ME AROUND? LEARN YOUR DAMN PLACE, YOU GODDAMN BRAT!"
Again and again she smacked him before punching him in his stomach, making him cough and curl up like the loser he was. Tears and snot were dripping down his face, mixing in with the blood trickling out of his nose, but still he refused to budge and kept clinging to the wardrobe, trying to protect the filthy vermin inside.
"Why is it so goddamn difficult to just follow the damn rules!" she spat, digging her nails into his throat. She hauled him up until his toes barely touched the floor, making him choke and scratch at her arms in an attempt to free himself. She shook him roughly, tightening her hold.
"I should just kill you, let you join your good for nothing parents!"
"Ple-plea-please," he choked out.
"Think begging is going to save you this time? I warned you before and you're back to pulling this shit!"
Blue eyes rolled back before they settled on something over Koharu's shoulder. "Pl-please, Sa-Sasuke," he brought out; his lips steadily becoming blue.
She laughed, throwing her head back. "You seriously think your imaginary friend is going to save you? You're really more stupid than I - "
Something heavy slammed into her left side, forcing her to release the boy. The kid fell down, gasping and coughing, before he gripped the handle of the door, heaving himself up.
"You made him angry now," he whispered; his bloodshot eyes wide and luminous. "You shouldn't have made him angry."
"What the hell are you talking about?" she snapped, but couldn't help but look around nervously, wondering what the hell had just happened. Danzo wasn't here, so who had …
"You made Sasuke angry," the boy said simply and opened the wardrobe, stepping inside. "Bye-bye."
"Come here, you little shit!" She lunged forwards, reading to drag him out of the wardrobe and teach him some real respect, but before she could grab the doorhandle, something grabbed her around her throat and she flew through the room, slamming against the opposite wall.
"Wh- what …" she choked out, kicking out with her legs, but she was lifted back up and slammed against the wall again, making her ears ring and her head explode with pain.
When she raised her head disoriented, she screamed when she came face to face with a dark shadow, whose burning red eyes stared full of hatred back at her.
Teeth glinted sharply when the monster parted his lips in an awful smile. "Why don't I teach you some rules of my own?" he grumbled; his voice so gritty and deep it seemed to reach from deep underneath the earth.
Long black tendrils closed around her neck once more. "After all," the shadow breathed, leaning close to her face, "you're so fond of rules yourself."
Inside the wardrobe, little seven year old Naruto cradled his kitty against his chest, stroking his fluffy back and listening to his gentle purring. Everything really hurt; his throat hurt, his belly hurt, his head hurt.
But it wouldn't hurt for too long anymore, he knew. Sasuke would take care of everything, like he had been taking care of him ever since Naruto had met him during his second night at the new place.
Because this place was Sasuke's, long before it had become theirs, and Sasuke didn't like intruders. He liked Naruto, though, and had promised to take care of him. He would have punished Koharu and Danzo sooner than tonight if he could, but he had to collect his powers first and Halloween was the night he would be the most powerful, he'd explained.
Naruto just needed to say the word and Sasuke would take care of everything. Naruto would have to hide in the wardrobe then to be completely safe and he could only come out if Sasuke said so; he had made him promise it and everything.
And so Naruto had said it, because he was tired of being hurt, tired of being yelled at, but most importantly: tired of seeing his friends get hurt. He hadn't been strong enough to save Mister Froggy, but he wouldn't let his kitten suffer the same fate. Not when the kitten had chosen him as his friend and Naruto would do everything not to betray that trust.
He would keep his kitten safe, just like Sasuke would keep them safe.
And because he was a good boy – because he was really good, Sasuke assured him, not bad like Koharu and Danzo kept insisting he was – he ignored the loud screams and the squishy sounds outside his wardrobe, blocked the yelling and the loud thumps before silence reigned once more.
He startled when the door of his wardrobe opened, tensing up, but he relaxed when Sasuke's face peeked inside.
"Are they gone?" Naruto whispered, too scared still to be louder. Because what if they weren't gone, what if they were going to come back and punish him even more than before and what if …
The ugly thoughts inside his head quietened down when Sasuke pulled him out of the closet and into his lap, taking care not to disturb the kitten.
"They're gone," Sasuke said; his deep voice soothing the aching wounds in Naruto's body. "And they're never coming back. It's just you and me now."
Just him and Sasuke. With a relieved sigh, Naruto snuggled closer into Sasuke's embrace, not paying any attention to the dark red stain near the wall.
Just him and Sasuke finally. He liked that. The kitten in his arms seemed to agree as well, because he purred louder, making Naruto smile and bury his face into Sasuke's neck, inhaling his comforting scent.
Finally safe.
