Milestones
Naruto loved celebrating special moments.
He'd always been like that, for as long as Sasuke had known him – and considering they had met at the tender age of five and were now twenty-five years old, that was quite a long time already.
For all that Naruto had had trouble remembering material for tests at school, he had an uncanny ability to remember anything that he deemed to be important, like special dates. The day he and Sasuke had been friends for five years, Naruto had run over to him on the playground and had proudly handed over a cupcake with the top shaped like a tomato. One year after they had shared their first kiss, Sasuke had opened his locker at school to find a small bag of Hershey's kisses waiting for him, while Naruto had stood there, grinning like a loon.
They had even celebrated their first month of being officially together, just because Naruto had been so excited about it and Sasuke hadn't seen any reason to refuse him. Going out to a small affordable restaurant had made Naruto happy that evening and seeing Naruto happy never failed to make Sasuke happy, so it had been a win-win for the both of them. The blond had even gone as far as celebrating the first time they had made love to each other; a fact which had left Sasuke very appreciative considering Naruto's gift had been composed out of ropes and a gag. He had looked amazing, tied with his hands to the bedposts, squirming underneath Sasuke's tongue and fingers before he'd fucked him so hard, Naruto had walked rather bowlegged for several days. The ropes had found a permanent spot in their shared wardrobe after that.
Their first wedding anniversary had been spent in a small cabin on a private beach which belonged to Naruto's godfather. He and Sasuke had arranged their work schedules in such a way that the both of them would have the weekend off so that they could celebrate their wedding anniversary.
Yes, Naruto loved celebrating special moments, whether they be birthdays, holidays or special memories like their first date and first kiss.
So it didn't really came as a surprise to Sasuke when Naruto decided to start celebrating milestones in his first pregnancy.
They had been married for two years, the both of them having a steady job for several years now, when they had decided to try having a child. They had talked about it before, how many children they would want to have – two, three at most – how long they were going to wait before trying to get pregnant.
They deemed the time right a few weeks before Christmas and Naruto got rid of his suppressants immediately, jokingly making a short ceremony out of it. They didn't mention it to the rest of their family and friends yet, not wanting to get ahead of themselves in case it took them a while before Naruto would become pregnant.
They had been trying for less than three months when on a Friday evening Sasuke returned home, more than happy to escape the office for the weekend and his nagging colleagues. Let Itachi deal with the nagging; Sasuke didn't have the patience for it.
Naruto was in the kitchen when he arrived home, humming to himself as he stirred the noodles in the pot. In the pan next to it, slices of meat was being grilled; the delicious scent filling the kitchen.
"Tadaima," Sasuke muttered, loosening his tie before kissing Naruto on his mouth.
"Okaeri," he smiled and stole a second kiss. "Dinner is almost ready."
"Thanks." Sasuke raised an eyebrow when he noticed the light was on in the oven. "What else are you making?"
Naruto grinned; his blue eyes glittering. "Why don't you check for yourself?"
His faux innocent voice had Sasuke looking at him suspiciously, because that faux innocence tended to not bode well, but there wasn't any prank Naruto could pull with the oven without risking setting fire to the place or so, so it should be safe to check. He hoped.
Resigned to whatever was the cause of that mischievous grin on his husband's face, Sasuke bent down and carefully opened the door of the oven, preparing himself for any possible steam.
There was no steam. In fact the oven didn't feel warm at all and he frowned. "Did you forget to put the oven on?" he asked exasperatedly, fully opening the door now. What he saw lying on the tray made him pause. "That's a bun," he said blankly.
"Yes, it is," Naruto replied, looking ridiculously pleased with himself.
"You put a bun in the oven," Sasuke stated flatly, still staring at the aforementioned bun. It was just one bun, appearing dwarfed by the sheer size of the tray it was resting in.
"Well, this one I did," Naruto said cheerfully and turned off the flames underneath the pot and the pan. "Dinner's ready."
"Why did you put a bun in the oven?" Sasuke asked perplexed and rose up, stepping aside so that Naruto could pass by him to drain the noodles in the sink.
"Think, Sasuke, I know you're smart enough to figure it out," Naruto smirked, jumping slightly when Sasuke smacked his arse in retaliation. "It's not that difficult to figure it out," the blond insisted, putting the pot back on the counter.
A bun in the oven … Sasuke stared at the bun in question, looked at Naruto's expectant face, back to the bun, Naruto's face, the bun …
And then it clicked. "You're pregnant?" Sasuke asked in a strangled voice; shock muting his vocal chords.
Naruto clapped his hands together and smiled giddily. "Yes, I am! I did the test this morning, because I was feeling off, you know? Well, I took five tests actually," he amended and cleared his throat before continuing to rattle on, "But just because I wanted to be sure in case the first one was faulty or so. Anyways, they're all positive, so that means you succeeded in putting a bun in my oven, which is why you get one as gift!"
He looked so damn pleased with himself, with his witty way of informing Sasuke that they were going to have a baby, that Sasuke slapped the back of his head gently, ignoring his whining, before pulling him closer to lock their mouths together in a fierce kiss.
"Trust you to come up with this ridiculous way to tell me," he muttered, but a smile was tugging at the corners of his mouth regardless; excitement brewing in the pit of his stomach as realisation fully sank in.
They were going to have a baby.
"Why do the cliché thing when I can make it fun?" Naruto retorted and laughed when Sasuke urged him to jump up and close his legs around his waist. "Hey, dinner is ready, you know? I cooked it especially for you!"
"Dinner can wait," Sasuke said dismissively and made a beeline for the couch in the living room, because that was the closest comfortable surface that wasn't a kitchen table and he had no patience to get up the stairs first to go to their room. "We've got something to celebrate first."
"Oh we do, do we?" Naruto mocked, but his snickering was quickly replaced by moaning when Sasuke dumped him on the couch and set about showing him just how much he appreciated the little gift in the oven.
Naruto decided to celebrate him being three months pregnant by informing their parents about the baby – in his own way, naturally.
Sasuke's parents each received a mug with 'Grandfather of the year!' and 'Grandmother of the year!' which led to father being absolutely speechless for the first time that Sasuke could remember and mother actually crying, too overcome with emotion at the thought that she would be a grandmother soon.
Naruto's parents received the 'Grandparenting for Dummies' book that same weekend. That set off Kushina on a rant first about not having been informed sooner, before she also broke down in tears and hugged the both of them so tightly that Sasuke feared his ribs would be crushed underneath the pressure. For such a frail looking woman, she possessed a lot of strength. There were even some tears in Minato's eyes when his wife finally relinquished her near chokehold, so that he could pull them both into a hug and congratulate them.
Gaara, Naruto's other best friend, received a baby doll when he visited them a couple of days later. It didn't take long before Temari got a hold of it, took pictures of it and sent them to everyone they knew, crowing about how her little brother was going to be an uncle soon. That had definitely been the cheapest way to inform the rest of their friends.
Naruto was nearly six months pregnant when they discovered the sex of their baby. In true Naruto style, he invited everyone to lunch in the park where he proceeded to distribute cupcakes underneath everyone, encouraging them all to bite in it at the same moment.
Revealing the bright blue colour inside of it, announcing that they were going to have a baby boy.
If mother and Kushina had been beyond excited at hearing that they were going to become a grandmother, they went absolutely insane at the thought that they were going to get a grandson as their first grandchild.
Their scolding that Naruto should have just told them instead of going through all the effort of making so many cupcakes didn't have much effect considering they were too distracted fawning over his rounded belly.
Sasuke himself had never been the type to go overboard during celebrations. Certainly, he bought presents for his family and Naruto whenever there was something to celebrate: a birthday, Christmas, a special occasion like a wedding anniversary. But between the two of them, it had always been Naruto who enjoyed celebrating even the littlest special moments, whether that was with funny gifts or more expensive presents.
The day Naruto went into labour, Sasuke decided to change things up a bit for once.
Seven hours after Naruto had been admitted to the hospital saw the blond man reclined in the bed, looking exhausted and red-faced and sweaty beyond belief, as he cooed at the baby pressed against his chest. Their son had a tuft of black hair covering his scalp and his dark blue eyes were gliding around the room, never settling on one thing for long. His little chubby fists rested on top of the blanket he'd been wrapped in.
"Look at how absolutely perfect he looks like," Naruto muttered; his voice still somewhat rough. "He's just so perfect!"
"He is," Sasuke agreed, smiling; still in awe at seeing their baby finally resting in Naruto's arms after only having been able to feel him kick and move for months. "I got something for him."
"Already?" Naruto laughed softly, careful not to move too much. "He's going to be so spoilt!"
Ignoring the last comment, Sasuke walked over to the extra bag he'd packed just in time and came back with a small, light pink box in his hands. He removed the lid and lowered the box so that Naruto could get a good look at it.
"Is that – is that a birthday cake with a zero candle on top of it?" Naruto croaked out, looking torn between laughing and crying.
Sasuke shrugged, smiling faintly as he put the cake – a chocolate one with raspberry frosting – on the nightstand. "Well, he is officially zero years old now, isn't he? I thought you would want to celebrate that milestone," he teased.
"You're such a bastard," Naruto laughed and freed one hand in order to grasp Sasuke's collar and tug him closer. "I thought you considered these milestones silly to celebrate? Like our one month celebration, remember?"
Sasuke shrugged again and grasped Naruto's hand gently, lifting it up to press a kiss on the back of it. "It's not silly when they make you smile like this," he said truthfully and had the pleasure of seeing a blush spread down from Naruto's cheeks to his chest.
"Spare the romance for when I'm not sweaty and disgusting looking," Naruto pouted.
"You could never be disgusting to me," Sasuke promised and bent down to kiss him.
"I'll remind you of that if my nipples start leaking through my shirts again."
Celebrating milestones, even small ones like this one, really wasn't that awful, Sasuke considered and settled down next to Naruto, caressing their son's cheek lightly.
Especially not when they made Naruto this happy.
The End
AN2: Don't know what I was thinking, sorry if this is too weird. I'm going to sleep my shame away.
Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in my (normally less strange) future fics! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
