Author's note: My online summer classes ended, so that means that I'll be returning to a semi normal sleeping schedule again. Started working on this story, but my brain is mush tonight, so I decided to cut this story into two. Why? Because 1) as I said my brain is mush and 2) I want to know what you think of this. The atmosphere feels a bit different? I don't know, I let you decide on that.
Either way unless the comments are clear they don't like it, the second part will be posted this weekend along with at least one more update of one of my stories, because damn, it's been too long!
Warnings: Sasuke's pov; Alternate universe; A/B/O dynamics; Omega Naruto; established slash; referred Mpreg; some angst
I hope you'll enjoy the first part!
Part 1
He was just packing his briefcase when someone rapped their knuckles on the door.
"My meeting with the board got moved to three o'clock next week, you mind if we move our meeting to one then?" Itachi inquired, supporting his shoulder against the doorjamb.
Sasuke checked his planner quickly. "That's fine; I don't have anything planned then," he said, snapping the planner shut and putting that in his briefcase as well. "Any particular reason?"
"Apparently one of the board members has a previous engagement that they can't delay," Itachi answered and shrugged. "The meeting can't start without everyone present, so they elected to move the meeting entirely. You're going home?"
"Yes, I'm finished for the day," Sasuke confirmed and pulled on his jacket. "You're going to stay for much longer?"
"No, just need to finish something and then I'll be leaving as well. Say hello to Naruto-kun," Itachi smiled, stepping aside to let his younger brother pass by.
"Will do. I'll see you tomorrow, nii-san."
Nagato – as always – was also still present and Sasuke exchanged a nod with the older man when he passed him on the way to the elevator. Kakuzu seemed to be in his office as well, because there was light peeking from underneath the door. The door was closed, though, and Sasuke knew better than to open it in order to wish the financial expert a good evening. Kakuzu wasn't exactly the type to exchange pleasantries with.
The receptionist had already left and his footsteps echoed through the entrance hall when he made his way to the parking lot. Evening was well into settling in; the streetlights bathing the footpath in soft white. Crickets were busy chirping their evening song and a lonely car drove by as he walked to his car.
"Hey."
"Hey." His boyfriend picked up after a couple of rings while he settled down behind the wheel.
"I'm about to leave," Sasuke announced, putting on his seatbelt. "Itachi says hi, by the way."
"Ah, that's nice of him," Naruto replied.
The dark haired man paused, furrowing his eyebrows. "Something wrong?" Was it just his imagination or the line being bad or was Naruto sounding off?
"Nah, just a bit tired. I'll see you soon."
"Yes, I'll be home in half an hour," he promised and hung up then, deciding that he was probably just imagining things.
It wasn't as if Naruto could hide it when something was bothering him; he would have been complaining already then.
The smell of pork cutlet ramen had him raising an eyebrow when he walked through the front door. Considering Naruto's obsession with ramen, it wasn't that surprising to smell it, but it was odd that he was making it in the middle of the week. He preferred to eat it on Friday or during the weekends instead, claiming it made it easier to relax then if neither of them had to cook a lot.
Had he forgotten to prepare dinner tonight and had instead gone for something easy like ramen?
"I thought you liked eating ramen during the weekends?" Sasuke remarked when he entered the kitchen, loosening his tie.
Naruto stood in front of the stove and he jumped slightly, spinning around from where he had been stirring a wooden spoon in the pot.
Blue eyes were wide when the blond replied, "Oh, erm, yeah, just was in the mood to prepare something easy tonight."
"So you went for ramen," Sasuke said dryly. "Sandwiches are easy to make too."
Naruto wrinkled his nose, but didn't react and that set off alarm bells for the second time tonight for Sasuke. Because Naruto never let the chance escape to defend his precious dish, no matter how small the slight towards it had been.
His uncharacteristic silence had Sasuke studying him intently and he frowned at the weird stance Naruto had taken on. Like he was withdrawing into himself; his shoulders hunched and his body angled slightly away from Sasuke. He also made no move to remove the distance between them for a kiss, even though he had always been incredibly affectionate and would literally return home if he had left the house without a goodbye kiss.
"What's wrong? Did something happen today?" he asked concerned, leaving his tie discarded across the back of his chair, approaching the blond man.
"Nah, nothing. I told you I'm just tired," Naruto said quickly, but his moves were slightly jittery as he turned back to the pot, taking up the spoon like he was a robot.
"Naruto, we've known each other since we were five," Sasuke pointed out; his frown deepening. "You've never been good at lying anyways, so don't even start. What's wrong?"
"Really, bastard, nothing's wrong with me," Naruto sighed, a tad aggravated. "I'm just tired; what's wrong with that?"
"The ramen's burning," Sasuke commented, stepping back just in time before Naruto would accidentally jab him in his stomach as he flailed and cursed, turning off the fire immediately.
Sasuke observed him, watching how he hastily removed the cooking pot and put it on another burner. Now he definitely knew something was off. For all that Naruto sometimes could get easily distracted in the kitchen, there was one thing he would never burn and that was ramen. The fact that he hadn't even noticed it before Sasuke had pointed it out …
"Okay, how about you cut the bullshit and tell me what's wrong?" Sasuke said bluntly, crossing his arms. "It's not like you to burn ramen. Are you coming down with something? Are you feeling sick?"
"No, it's just …" Naruto trailed off frustrated, heaving another sigh; a deeper one this time which seemed to extract all the air inside of his lungs and had him bracing his hands against the counter top.
"Did something happen at work today?" Sasuke guessed, tilting his head to the left. "One of your colleagues being idiots again?"
Wouldn't be the first time, though admittedly their idiocy usually didn't bother Naruto this much.
"No, it's not them," Naruto muttered and ran his hands through his hair several times, messing it up even more than it already was.
"Naruto, seriously, just tell me what's – "
"My heat's late."
It was just a measly three words, but they left Sasuke completely stumped and he could only gaze as Naruto hugged himself, staring down at the floor while his cheeks steadily reddened more and more; the red colour dipping down to his neck.
"Sorry, did you just say that your heat is late? As in you missed your heat?" Sasuke asked carefully; the words feeling alien on his tongue.
Naruto was never late. He was one of those Omega whose heat came so on time he could basically pinpoint the exact day and moment it would happen. He never had had to hastily return from class or work because his heat had hit him unexpectedly. He knew when to expect it and could schedule everything around it on time.
In all those years they had known each other, Sasuke couldn't recall even one single instance in which Naruto's heat had been late. Not even when he first started having them; he'd been pretty regularly from the get go.
Black eyes shot to the calendar hanging right next to the window; Sasuke's stomach did an uncomfortable flip when he realised that it was true. Naruto's heat should have happened last week, but the Alpha couldn't remember him sequestering himself in his room. He hadn't paid much attention to it last week, because he'd been busy with several meetings and Naruto had been arranging assignments for his own work.
Naruto's heat was late.
As the realisation bounced back and forth in Sasuke's mind, Naruto mumbled, "Yeah, I realised today when I was checking the calendar. I should have had it last week, but … I didn't."
"But your suppressants," was all that Sasuke could think of to say.
The Omega had been taking suppressant since he'd turned eighteen and they had started their relationship. As far as Sasuke knew Naruto had never forgotten to take them, so how was it possible that his heat was late now?
"There have been a couple of mornings when I took them later because I'd got up later," Naruto admitted hesitatingly, rubbing his left hand over his right arm.
"Yeah, but you still took them. I don't think a difference of ten minutes is going to have much of an impact," Sasuke remarked.
"Maybe." Naruto bit down on his lip. "But I missed my heat and you know I'm always on time."
Nails digging into the tender flesh of his palms when he balled his hands into fists, Sasuke asked carefully, "Have you taken a test yet?"
"I went to the store after work," Naruto admitted and cleared his throat, looking highly uncomfortable. "But they apparently are having problems with getting new stock and the shelves were empty. They said I could come back this Friday; they should have new stock then."
Sasuke grimaced and rubbed a hand over his face. Today was Tuesday; that meant at least two more days of not knowing whether something had gone wrong with the suppressants. Two more days of not knowing whether Naruto was ...
Pregnant.
They hadn't really talked about children. Not yet. While they had been together for six years already, they were still only twenty-four. Just one year ago they had saved enough to buy their first house. Only two years ago had they graduated from university. Whenever they had mentioned having children, it had been in the context of at least several years later; perhaps in two to three years or even four. Sure, they wanted kids, but that was a plan for later, once the time was right to take the next step.
Naruto's suppressants had always done their job so they had never worried about having an accident, not even when Sasuke joined him in his heat.
Now however, for some reason, the suppressants weren't doing their job and Naruto's heat was late. It could be nothing, he told himself. Naruto had been pretty stressed out the past couple of weeks because of some ongoing spats at his workplace; maybe that had something to do with why his heat hadn't arrived just yet.
But Naruto had been stressed several times before and his heat had always been on time even then.
"I didn't know how to tell you this on the phone," Naruto admitted in a small voice; his head bent.
Sasuke sighed and finally removed the remaining distance between them, pulling the other man in his arms. "It's fine, we'll figure it out," he murmured and kissed Naruto's forehead.
"But – we never – we said we would wait, you know, to have … to have children," Naruto brought out and buried his face into the Alpha's shoulder before he could check whether the younger man had started crying.
"We don't know yet why your heat is late," Sasuke stated, even as his own stomach twisted into knots or so it felt like. "You've been more stressed lately and you took your suppressants at a later moment; maybe that's just messing with your system a bit."
"I've never been late before, though," Naruto pointed out what Sasuke had been thinking the entire time already.
No, Naruto had never been late before. He might entertain too much chaos in his study – which tended to drive Sasuke mad at times, he wasn't going to lie – but when it came to this aspect of his life he was as regular as he could be. He even made some of their friends jealous because he'd always been able to count on when he could expect his heat.
No, he'd never been late before.
But for everything was a first time, right?
Dinner that evening tasted like nothing in Sasuke's mouth, but he forced himself to eat it anyways, because eating dinner after work was normal and he needed some normality now.
Every time he looked at Naruto, he couldn't help but wonder whether he was expecting a baby right at this moment. Was there a child growing inside of him now? Something that shared both their genes? It was a strange idea to consider, one which unsettled him a bit. He'd never expected to entertain the idea of a baby when he was still just twenty-four years old, but here he was: seated at the kitchen table, listening to the radio and finishing his dinner, while wondering whether the test on Friday would colour positive after all.
How had his boring work day turned into this?
Naruto broke the silence when they were getting ready for bed. "Are you mad at me now?"
Sasuke turned around immediately, watching the blond physically clamp up as he stood waiting on the other side of the bed. He was dressed in those garnish orange pyjama pants that Sasuke kept throwing out because they were clinging on to life, but which Naruto kept rescuing, refusing to part with them. The blue shirt he wore, was one he'd stolen from Sasuke some time ago and while they didn't differ that much in height or weight, the shirt made him look a lot smaller than he actually was now, almost drowning his frame.
"Why the hell would I be mad at you?" Sasuke asked incredulously and finished pulling his own shirt over his head.
When he tugged his shirt down and looked at Naruto again, the Omega was shrugging weakly. "You haven't said much tonight."
"That's because I'm still trying to process everything," Sasuke sighed and shook his head. "I'm not mad at you; that would be stupid."
Naruto fidgeted with a loose thread of his trousers. "What do you think the test will say?"
His words were barely audible, scratchy and raw, and he looked more like a kid than the adult he actually was.
"I don't know," Sasuke replied after a pause. "It can go either way."
Either Naruto was pregnant or he wasn't. That was something they would find out this Friday.
"What are we going to do if, you know, if I'm pregnant?" Naruto asked worriedly.
Sasuke had to step around the bed and grab his hands before he would completely ruin his trousers; the loose thread having become a lot longer suddenly. "That's something we'll have to consider then." He eyed him carefully. "Do you want to discuss it now?"
"Not really," Naruto mumbled and looked away. "I know we should, just in case, but … Not tonight."
"Not tonight," Sasuke agreed. He wasn't the type to put off uncomfortable decisions for long, preferring to make them as soon as possible.
The idea that Naruto might be currently expecting his child, however … That idea sent his mind spinning so much that he couldn't even hope of trying to make a decision tonight. The possible existence of a baby was so daunting that for the first time in his life he'd rather stall making a decision.
It was just for a couple of days after all. Not like he was procrastinating on purpose. There was no point in getting themselves worked up in a tizzy about could be and might be when they weren't even certain yet that Naruto was pregnant. There was a chance, after all, that they were getting nervous about nothing. So what if his heat was late? That didn't have to necessarily mean anything.
That didn't have to mean that they might be expecting a baby now.
It didn't have to mean anything.
He pulled Naruto next to him in their bed, wrapping the blanket around them both. Naruto snuggled into his chest, his hand drawing restlessly across Sasuke's back underneath the sheets.
In the dark they found each other's lips and they kissed for some time, never deepening the kiss beyond a soft press of their mouths against each other.
Sleep took a long time to take them that night.
AN2: So worthy of continuing or nah? I let you decide. Now I'm off to bed, because I'm about to fall asleep behind my laptop.
Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me.
I hope to see you all back in the second part if you liked it! Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
