Author's note: Stupid, nonsensical drabble. Less than 24 hours before I get my exam results and this is what I wrote. Choices were made tonight and I'm not sure whether they were good. If you thought I couldn't get any more weird, well, adjust your expectations, ladies and gentlemen, because clearly I can be even more weird.
I apologise in advance for the absolutely ridiculousness that is this ... thing.
Warnings: Teuchi's pov (yes, really, turn away while you still can); canon divergent; implied child neglect bordering on abuse (that's why the rating just to be safe); established slash; time skips; fluffish?
I'm not sure whether I dare to say that I hope you'll like this ...
It's the Little Things
Teuchi had never really cared for gossip. All he wanted to do was make his customers happy with delicious ramen and that was exactly what he did day after day in his ramen stand Ramen Ichiraku. He spent his days and evenings preparing ramen and late nights developing new recipes, ones which would hopefully attract even more customers.
He had noticed the little blond boy walking around aimlessly around the village before, the times he wasn't in his ramen stand. Uzumaki Naruto he was called and everyone bar the children knew what the boy had sealed within him. With no parents around anymore and no one else to call his, Teuchi spotted him all around the village, pulling pranks basically every week, which had the villagers yelling in anger and the little boy sticking out his tongue at them.
Teuchi normally didn't care to stick his nose into anyone's business. He had his ramen stand to worry about, a daughter to take care of; that was more than enough for a single father like him.
Yet when he saw dark blue eyes peeking underneath the cloth one evening, a little finger stuck in his mouth, his ill-fitting clothes absolutely drenched with the downpour happening at the moment, something in him twisted and he called out to Naruto to come inside. The little boy visibly startled and in a flash disappeared, making Teuchi frown. With how many pranks Naruto seemed to pull, he hadn't anticipated him being this shy.
He had half a mind to ignore it – he had called out to the boy, if Naruto didn't want to come inside, that was his business – but he found it hard to ignore just how miserable the little boy had looked. Right when he was about to step from behind the counter and look for him, Naruto popped up in front of the shop again, his eyes looking at him hugely before he flicked his gaze towards the ground and hesitatingly shuffled closer until he bumped into the counter. He looked up then, a hint of wariness lurking deep within his blue eyes.
"You ever had ramen, kid?" Teuchi asked, careful not to make any unexpected moves. Naruto reminded him of an alley cat at this moment, skittish and wary and ready to leap the second they sensed danger.
Silently Naruto shook his head, though his nose visibly twitched when he focused on the scent of the noodles cooking.
"Well, have a seat," Teuchi grunted and gestured brusquely at the stool. "I'll give you something to eat so that you can warm up. Don't know why they let you run about in this kind of foul weather, it's bad enough to get someone sick."
Really, whoever was looking after the boy was doing a pretty terrible job of it. He might be the carrier of the Kyuubi, but that didn't mean they had to completely ignore him. He was still just a kid after all.
The first couple of bites Naruto took of his ramen were hesitant, almost suspicious, but then the flavours seemed to register and Teuchi could only look on in amusement – and a bit of pride, he wasn't going to lie – how Naruto started scarfing down the bowl, not looking up once until his bowl was completely empty. Then he pouted, placing his chopsticks clumsily into the bowl.
"You want another serving, kid?" Teuchi guessed. Naruto was somewhat on the thin, small side. Whatever he ate on the regular couldn't be enough to really sustain him.
"Don't have money," Naruto muttered, looking down once more; his cheeks a dark red now which had nothing to do with the wind howling outside.
"Don't worry about it, first time customers eat for free," Teuchi lied, ignoring his assistant's raised eyebrow.
He set about preparing a second bowl and while this one was eating a tad slower, it was obvious Naruto enjoyed what he was eating and it was with a big smile and an excited wave that he left Ichiraku's a bit later, running to wherever he called his home.
That was the start of one of the best customer relations he had ever had. After that first evening, Naruto would regularly pop up, excited to eat ramen, offering to try out new recipes if Teuchi was uncertain about them.
Teuchi's daughter, Ayame, thought that Naruto was adorable and the two of them would often chat together amicably while Naruto scarfed down bowl after bowl. He was at the stand so much that Ayame had jokingly suggested creating a nameplate for his designated stool as he tended to sit down on the same one every time.
Year after year passed by. Naruto visited his shop when he was hungry, when he wanted to celebrate something – like officially becoming a shinobi, dragging Iruka with him – or when he wanted to comfort himself. Even when fresh out of the hospital, still swaddled up in bandages, Naruto would sit down on his chair and call out his by now familiar order.
The kid could eat like a horse, but Teuchi didn't mind. It felt gratifying to know how much his ramen was liked, knowing he was succeeding in his own personal mission of making people happy with his food, and as the years went by and Naruto started to become more popular, his ramen shop saw more and more customers as well, people eager to try out the food they heard the Jinchuuriki raving about.
There was a part of Teuchi who thought it was rather rich that now all of a sudden the same people who had sneered at and spat out the Jinchuuriki were now the same ones hoping to catch a glance of him at Ichiraku's. He had never been a fan of dishonest people and he wasn't blind to how hypocritical a lot of people of his village could be. Shun a kid for being a Jinchuuriki, only to then celebrate him when he saved all of their arses after Pein's attack and during the war.
Hypocrites, every single one of them.
But he said nothing, kept quiet as he heard them enthusiastically gossiping about the blond shinobi, and simply served them their food. It wasn't his place to ream them out for their behaviour. The only one who had that right was Naruto himself. One thing Teuchi could do, however, - and in which he delighted somewhat – was keeping the masses away whenever Naruto showed up at his stand, letting the man eat his ramen in peace.
War hero or not, famous Jinchuuriki or not, future Hokage or not, everyone deserved to eat in peace; even more so when they were his best customer.
"Hey, old man, how are you doing?" Naruto called out a greeting when he entered the shop.
Teuchi smiled, having already anticipated the man's arrival when he had heard people mentioning he had returned from his mission. "Doing good, can't complain. The same as usual, Naruto?"
"Make that two," Naruto said cheerfully and there was something else in his voice, something which had Teuchi turning around curiously.
He paused when his eyes landed on the man standing passively next to Naruto. Just as famous as Naruto was, just as well known was the dark haired man next to him. Uchiha Sasuke, the last remaining Uchiha; the other main war hero even when people might not want to admit that.
Teuchi could remember Uchiha from years before, back when Team Seven still had been together and twelve year old Naruto had dragged his teammates and his sensei to Ichiraku's to enjoy ramen. He had never seen Uchiha entering the ramen shop on his own accord, save for that one time he'd burst into the shop in a panic, demanding to know where Naruto had gone to.
"Ah, I see you brought your friend with you," Teuchi smiled and gestured to the two open seats in front of the counter. "Take a seat, it'll be done soon."
"Hey, what's that? Got something interesting to tell us, Naruto-kun?" Ayame teased, popping up next to Teuchi; her eyes glued onto Naruto's hand.
When Teuchi looked down, he was a bit taken aback to see a silver ring glinting around Naruto's ring finger.
Naruto laughed, a tad embarrassed yet proud at the same time, and he scratched the back of his head. "Ah, erm, I got engaged last week."
"Oh, who's the lucky one?" she asked excitedly; her eyes glittering.
He grinned bashfully and jerked at Uchiha, whose mouth faintly twitched in a smile. "To the bastard here. He managed to beat me in proposing to him."
"Hn, should have been quicker, usuratonkachi," Uchiha retorted and his own silver ring gleamed when he curled his hand into a fist and rested his head on it.
"Bastard, that has nothing to do with being quicker; you were just being a jerk and kicked my box away when I wanted to take it," Naruto huffed, puffing up his cheeks and slapping Uchiha's shoulder. "You should consider yourself damn lucky that I even said yes to you!"
"Please, like you were going to say no," Uchiha smirked.
"Congratulations! I'm so happy for you two!" Ayame enthused after she got over her shock. "This definitely needs to be celebrated!"
"I agree," Teuchi chuckled and counted the stack of clean bowls he still had left, because this was definitely a day where one bowl wouldn't be enough for Naruto.
He had had no idea that Naruto and Uchiha formed a couple, but considering some of the conversations he had overheard in the past, he should have put the clues together. Well, it didn't matter. Whoever Naruto liked was his business and as long as he didn't start hating Ichiraku's, then Teuchi couldn't care less.
Hm, perhaps he could offer free ramen for a year as a wedding gift? That would be a suitable gift for his best customer, no?
The End
AN2: Teuchi would come to regret offering free ramen for a year. Sorry for the absolute weirdness. I swear that the next stories won't be half as weird as this one is.
Please leave your thoughts behind in a review; should you spot any mistakes, please point them out to me. Now I'm off to bed before I write even stranger crap.
I hope to see you all back in my future stories! (Less weird than this one) Please stay safe and take care of yourselves!
