Author's note: Two oneshots in one week? Don't get used to it :P Anyways, I know I said there was only one more part left in the His Shadow series, but erm, I might have been hit by a burst of inspiration tonight and I might have written this one in one sitting? *clears throat* I don't know, this is pure word vomit at this point. It might be good, it might be horrible, I'll let you be the judge of that.
This is the sequel to Teaching Them a Lesson for the Umpteenth Time (and its previous prequels) so you might want to familiarise yourself with that universe first before you tackle this story.
Warnings: OC and Sasuke's pov; established slash; drama; minor character deaths; violence; smidgen of gore; Sasuke's not the only overprotective one
I hope you'll like this! (Random as it might be)
The Wrong One
"So all we have to do, is take the Hokage out of the picture for a while?" Ichiko said dubiously, twirling a lock of her copper coloured hair around her finger.
"That's all you have to do," the hooded man confirmed. "You do that and three bags of gold will be yours."
"And why do you need him out of the picture so badly?" Ankoku demanded. "If you want him out of the picture, wouldn't it be easier to get rid of him entirely?"
"That's not necessary. He just needs to be out of the village for a while," the mysterious man replied. "Think you can manage that or do I need to find someone else who can use some money?"
Ankoku really didn't like this guy. He and his partner Ichiko had made it a point to only do business with people whose faces they knew, so that nobody could try to fuck them over after the assignment was over. This guy resolutely refused to show his face and knew how to manipulate his surroundings to his advantage, ensuring that not even a stray of light would ever land on his face. It wasn't anyone who regularly came around these parts either, because he didn't recognise the voice at all.
They should just refuse and tell the guy to piss off, but three bags full of gold … That wasn't something you came across every day. And all they had to do was abduct the Hokage and lay low for a while? This whole assignment stank, but the reward was nothing to pull up the nose for either.
"Just abduct them, lay low for a while and everything will be ours, right?" Ichiko said contemplatively, tapping her heel against the floor.
"You're really considering this?" Ankoku glared, his hand drifting down to his hip where he kept his kunai.
"We need the money if we want to get out of this place," she murmured, her brown eyes unnaturally sharp. "We're already taking a huge risk by staying around while Suna is hunting us down."
"That's because you thought it was smart to try to attack the Kazekage's brother," he said irritated.
It hadn't even been for an assignment, the absolute bint that she had been. She had just been bored and when Ichiko became bored, she became dangerous as hell. Three weeks ago she had thought it would be a marvellous idea to attack the Kazekage's brother, hoping to get some valuable stuff through it. Needless to say that plan had backfired spectacularly and now they were on the run, trying to get as far away from Suna as possible before they would be caught.
The mysterious guy had found them here, laying low in a dilapidated, almost forgotten pub, built on the borders of Suna and Konoha. Ankoku had watched him looking around, drifting from one table to the other until he had paused next to theirs and had made them his offer.
Ankoku had no idea what the deal was with this guy and the Hokage, but clearly something had gone south between them for the guy to want the Hokage out of the picture for a while. If he really was that pissed, though, why insist on only abducting him and not killing him?
Then again, even as self-confident as Ankoku and Ichiko were, they also knew their limits very well. Sure, the rumours about the Hokage being unwilling to give a fight a deadly spin had spread throughout the world after the war, but Ankoku wasn't particularly worried about him. He was more worried about his supposed Shadow as the underworld had taken to call the man: Uchiha Sasuke, the lone survivor of a once so majestic and feared clan. Always there to accompany the Hokage, ready to strike down anyone foolish enough to try to attack the Jinchuuriki. Unlike the Hokage, Uchiha had no trouble whatsoever getting rid of foes in a very bloody manner.
Strong Ankoku might be, but there was no way he would win in a fight against Uchiha, he knew. He might as well save the guy the effort and slit his own throat.
So if they did take on the assignment, they first would have to deal with Uchiha. Because as long as Uchiha was around, there was no getting to the Hokage, even an idiot realised that.
"Whatever, it would have worked out just fine if his sister hadn't shown up unexpectedly," Ichiko said dismissively. "Regardless, we need that money and you know that as well. Where else are we going to get this amount if we have to keep hiding ourselves?"
"I need your answer now," the hooded man said and sounded almost bored. "I sought you two out, because rumours have it that you're extremely skilled at taking down your enemies. If you don't feel up to the task, however, feel free to refuse. I'll find someone else then."
God, this man was such a fucking arsehole, sounding so damn smug for someone who had to come ask criminals for help.
"We'll do it," Ichiko decided and tapped one finger on the stained table. "But we want one bag upfront. You want us to take on a dangerous target like the Hokage, you need to give us some incentive. This way we know you're serious."
"I'm not in the habit of negotiating with criminals," the guy had the gall to sigh. "But very well, in this case I'll make an exception. One bag now, the rest when you succeed."
"Then we've got a deal," she grinned sharply.
Ankoku sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. It looked like they were going to venture into the enemy territory once more. If only they didn't need that damn money …
"How do you want to do this?" Ankoku asked, running his hand through his black hair before pulling on his hood. His hair was getting too long for his liking; the second they were far enough, he was going to use some of the money to see a damn hairdresser.
Ichiko was sitting cross-legged on the bed, a map of Konoha laid out in front of her. "According to his intel, the Hokage lives here," she pointed at a street near the outskirts of the village, "which is close enough to the forest that we can sneak in from that side."
"You want to go for the Hokage straight on?"
"Hell no," she snorted and started tying her hair back. "Are you insane? That gives Uchiha a chance to attack us. No, we're going to take out Uchiha first and then go after Uzumaki. Two against one will go a lot easier without Uchiha nearby."
"Right," he said slowly and slipped more kunai in his pockets. "And do you have any idea yet how to take out Uchiha? Because I'm pretty sure he won't just sit down and wait for us to knock him out."
"He won't, no," she agreed and smirked. "But even the almighty Uchiha needs to sleep. And if there happens to be some powder spread throughout the house that makes sleep easier … Well, lucky us, right?"
"Wait, you got your hands on it?" he asked enthusiastically, a lot more excited now.
They had caught the rumour of a rogue shinobi who created incredibly powerful sleeping powders. He was currently on the run from every nation, wanted for trying to attack one of the Kage meetings. Ankoku and Ichiko had been wanting to get their hands on this type of powder for months now, because it would make their missions a hell of a lot easier if their enemies were fast asleep and couldn't fight back.
"Yeah, a few days ago," she grinned satisfied and procured a small dark brown bag from her pouch. "Turns out the guy was hiding in a shack nearby. Only had to show him a bit of skin and while he was drooling over it, I knocked him out and stole some of his stash. This should be enough to take out Uchiha and maybe even the Hokage."
He shook his head in wonder. "You're absolutely ruthless," he chuckled.
Just as confident as she was in her fighting skills, just as confident was Ichiko about her body and she had no problems whatsoever displaying what she had if that gained her an advantage. He had no idea if she had ever slept with someone in order to get her hands on something and he didn't care. They were a good team and as long as she didn't betray him, she could do whatever the hell she wanted.
"Hey, not my fault the guy was too busy staring at my tits," she sneered and pocketed the powder again. "We'll have to do some reconnaissance first, figure out their schedules, but honestly, this might be easier than that time we had to break into one of Orochimaru's hideouts."
"Eugh, don't remind me of that guy," he shuddered.
Sure, they were all criminals in one way or the other, but Orochimaru was a whole different league. The guy was so fucked up Ankoku was glad he had never landed in one of his traps. Trying to get into one of his hideouts had been a nightmare all on its own.
"Either way, we've got this in the bag," Ichiko smirked. "In less than two weeks we're out here with three bags of gold."
"We will be," he said, for the first time since meeting that weirdo actually feeling confident about this.
Too bad for the Hokage, but he would be saying goodbye to both his Shadow and his village very soon …
They knew the routine after just one week of observing them. The time when they would arrive home was pretty consistent, usually around seven or eight. They also happened to have a kid, which was something the guy hadn't mentioned. Well, kid was perhaps being too generous. It was still a baby, maybe around a month old.
If Ankoku was anyone else, the sight of the newly born baby would make him rethink his plan, because taking away both parents from a kid was cruel. But he wasn't anyone else and frankly he didn't give a shit about a kid he didn't even know. Too bad for the baby, but in the world they lived in, it was eaten or be eaten, even with the war over. Orphans were like a dime a dozen, really. This kid just had the bad luck that both his parents were a target.
The plan was easy: right before the two men would arrive home, Ichiko would sneak inside and spread some of the powder in the room Uchiha remained in for a few hours every night. It appeared to be some kind of study room, filled with files upon files and other documents. Whatever the purpose of the room was, Uchiha was in there for at least two hours every evening, which made it the best place to subdue him as the Hokage tended to stay downstairs, puttering around with the baby and doing whatever parents did with a new born.
"You ready?" Ankoku asked, looking at the street from his spot in the three. The street was deserted as it always was around this time of the day. There were very few houses nearby, presumably to keep the Hokage's privacy and there were no guards stationed anywhere.
Even with Uchiha acting as the Shadow, one would think more guards would be stationed around to help protect the Hokage. Clearly this village thought too highly of Uchiha.
"Yes, going inside now," Ichiko spoke through the ear piece.
From her side, he could hear her opening the window and slipping inside; her footsteps muffled on the carpet as she went straight to the study room. The door of that room squeaked gently when she opened it and then for the next two minutes he heard nothing but her footsteps as she methodologically walked around, spreading the powder alongside the walls and underneath the desk: places that wouldn't immediately arouse suspicion.
"I'm back outside," she confirmed a few minutes later. "Now all we need to do, is wait for them to get home."
"And cash in on the rest of the gold," he murmured.
They would still need to lay low for a while, but they had enough sleeping powder to keep the Hokage subdued for at least a month after Ichiko had gone back to steal more.
For all the reservations he had had about this plan, honestly, he was feeling pretty good about this. He couldn't wait for the two men to arrive home and get their nasty surprise.
Dusk had settled in by the time the two men arrived home. The Hokage was snickering about something, Uchiha sighing exasperatedly and then both sounds died out as they went inside.
Ankoku and Ichiko were hiding in the tree closest to the study room, awaiting the moment they could slip inside and dispose of Uchiha first.
This part of the evening took the longest now, having to wait for the two to finish their dinner and for Uchiha to finally get upstairs and go into the study room. They seemed to be taking a lot longer now, even though Ankoku knew that they were still following their routine like always. He was just getting impatient now that they were getting closer to finishing their mission.
But finally they saw the shadow of Uchiha dancing across the landing before it disappeared behind a door. The light in the study room flicked on next and his shadow slipped in front of the curtains.
Given how potent the powder was, they would only need to wait half an hour at best before they could safely slip inside. Ichiko would go inside first and make sure Uchiha wouldn't pose a threat at all. Then Ankoku would follow as well and together they would take on the Hokage. With his baby nearby, there was no way the guy would react too violent either. Hell, they might even be lucky enough to subdue him simply by threatening his kid. This might turn out to be the easiest assignment yet so far, honestly.
"I'm going in," Ichiko murmured once a half hour had gone by.
He nodded and watched her creep down the branch before pushing open the window and slipping inside. She would give him the okay once she had confirmed Uchiha was out, so now he just had to wait at most a minute longer.
That minute turned into two and then three before turning into four and five minutes.
At the six minute mark, he furrowed his eyebrows. What the hell was she doing? Was she trying to score some extra stuff? God, he knew he shouldn't have let her go first; for all her genius, she was too easily distracted by interesting stuff!
"Ichiko, are you done fucking around?" he asked annoyed in the earpiece.
No answer.
His frown deepened and he looked at the window. Was she that distracted that she couldn't even hear him talking? Honestly, so annoying.
Rolling his eyes, he crawled down the branch and wriggled through the open window, intent on finding her and dragging her arse downstairs. They had a plan to follow, damn it!
Something squelched underneath his foot, as if he was stepping into something wet. Confused, he looked down and –
Froze when his eyes landed on the pool of blood steadily spreading out. Heart hammering in his chest, he followed the trail of blood; nausea rearing up when he met glazed over brown eyes, Ichiko's limbs spread out around her in weird angles as if they had been broken in several places. There was a literal hole in her stomach as if someone had literally punched a hole through her.
What the fuck had happened here? Uchiha was supposed to be down for the count!
Right as his hand dipped down to grab a kunai, something crackled in the air and grabbed him around his chest, slamming him into the wall, punching out all the air in his lungs.
As he weakly gasped, his ears ringing, his eyes widened when a pair of glowing red eyes broke through the shadows and approached him leisurely.
The Hokage stood in front of him, dressed in nothing but a large shirt and pyjama trousers, and looking absolutely pissed.
"So you two thought you could just attack Sasuke and our son and get away with it?" Uzumaki asked in a low, dangerous voice; the marks on his cheeks thickening as more and more chakra tails sprouted out behind him.
One of the tails was currently crushing Ankoku's ribs, tightening with every desperate inhale he took. "I di-didn't - "
"Really?" Sarcasm practically dripped off his voice. "So you were just paying us a visit then? Through the window? We have a door, you know."
Ankoku weakly shook his head, but it was getting more and more difficult to focus, black spots dancing in front of his eyes as the tail didn't let up at all, tightening more and more until one crack after the other rebounded through the hallway; his ribs unable to resist the pressure any longer.
Through the burning pain, he watched Uzumaki come closer.
"I wonder – was Sasuke the target all along or were you trying to get to me?" he asked idly. "Did you think that taking out Sasuke would remove the most dangerous obstacle?"
He snickered, sounding oddly amused. "Honestly, guess I can't blame you all. The bastard is rather overprotective and has a tendency to go too far," he said lovingly. Another step had him standing right in front of Ankoku and his red eyes glowed ominously; the pupils slitted like that of a fox.
"But you all forget one thing: I'm just as protective over him as he is over me," Uzumaki murmured and was Ankoku becoming delirious or were those teeth actually turning into fangs? "And I don't like it either when people try to hurt what's mine."
Ankoku opened his mouth to plea maybe, try to get that bit of air he needed, to scream, but it was useless.
Red eyes gleamed, the shadow of a roaring fox fell over him and then …
Nothing. Black.
Sasuke closed the file and rubbed his eyes. They felt gritty and tired after a long day of nothing but reading scrolls in awful handwriting and he could feel a headache building up. Best to quit for today before his head would start pounding.
Standing up, his gaze fell on the crib next to the desk and a soft smile appeared on his face when he watched Ryoto wrinkle his nose in his sleep; his little fists clenching and unclenching arrhythmically in his sleep. He had taken their son with him upstairs so that Naruto could rest on the couch for a bit. Even at one month old, Ryoto wasn't a terribly fussy baby, but once he opened his mouth, he had quite the volume already, so Sasuke had taken him with him just in case he started crying again.
His son had been good, however, falling asleep almost as soon as his head had hit the pillow. Sasuke supposed it helped that the room had been made soundproof, keeping out any street noise.
"Let's get you back to your dad," Sasuke murmured and carefully lifted up the sleeping baby. It had taken a bit of practice, but carrying Ryoto around in one arm had become as natural to him as using his katana with one hand by now.
He used his stump to push down the doorknob and halted bemused when Naruto's Kyuubi tails danced through the hallway as the man dragged a lifeless body down the stairs. There was a long blood trail starting from his door to the start of the staircase and he grimaced, letting out a put off sigh. Cleaning out the blood from the carpet was going to be a fucking nightmare.
"Looks like Kyuubi was right then," he remarked when he walked downstairs, spotting two dead bodies near the front door.
Naruto stood next to them, his hands on his hips, and a heavy frown on his face. "Yeah, looks like it," he muttered. "I wish I didn't have to do this, but they were going after you and maybe Ryoto too and I couldn't allow that."
"I know," Sasuke said quietly and stopped next to him, pressing a kiss against his temple.
Kyuubi had alerted Naruto a few days ago that something was amiss; two enemies keeping an eye on their house. It hadn't been anyone from Konoha, the Bijuu had said, because they didn't share the same stench as the rest of the villagers. So an enemy from outside who was either targeting Naruto or Sasuke.
One of Naruto's clones had kept himself hidden in the house since then, wanting to find out when the enemy would make their move. That move had been made today when a potent sleeping powder had been spread out in Sasuke's study. The clone had removed it as soon as the enemy had been out of the house again, ensuring that Sasuke wouldn't fall victim to it.
Sasuke would have liked to get rid of these pests himself, not wanting Naruto to bloody his hands with it, but the blond man had been quite insistent this time, refusing to give in. Sasuke was to be on the side lines this time, acting as another layer of protection for Ryoto, just in case they were trying to come after the baby.
The extra layer of protection had been unnecessary, clearly.
"Hey, don't they look like that pair who attacked Kankuro?" Sasuke asked with a frown, getting a better look at their blood drenched faces.
Gaara had sent them a message about it, including a drawn picture, of a man and a woman who had tried to attack Kankuro before Temari had shown up, forcing them to flee. Shinobi from Suna had been trying to track them down ever since and Gaara had requested Konoha to keep an eye out for them as well, just in case they tried to go into hiding here.
It looked like Suna no longer had to keep searching.
"Yeah, I was thinking that as well," Naruto agreed and nodded, scratching the back of his head. "Maybe they thought that the Hokage would make for an easier target," he smiled bleakly.
"You know you were justified, right?" Sasuke implored, trying to catch blue eyes. "They tried to attack us, you defended us."
"I'm not feeling sorry or guilty, bastard," Naruto sighed to his surprise and kissed him. "They paid the price when they tried to attack you. I just don't like how close they got to Ryoto."
"And nobody will get close again," Sasuke promised, handing over Ryoto to Naruto. "I'll be putting up wards tomorrow. The next person with bad intentions will regret it before they can even get close to the house."
"That's good," Naruto murmured, nuzzling Ryoto's head. Ryoto murmured sleepily, his head tucked into the blond's neck and his right fist resting gently against Naruto's collarbone. "I just want everything to finally be over, you know? I'm getting tired of having to be on my guard the entire time."
It was easy to forget that Naruto was not so unaffected by the multiple attacks as he liked to pretend. During the day he was always upbeat and chipper, an answer ready for everyone, laughing and joking around with his friends.
It was only here, in the privacy of their home, that he allowed his guard to drop and show his true feelings: the exhaustion of having to keep his guard up every day, the worry and fear that something might happen to their son if an enemy did get too close after all.
Sasuke hated that Naruto was forced to feel this way, hated that even at home the blond was never truly relaxed anymore; months of attack after attack wearing him down.
It only made him even more determined to finally catch the person responsible for the hell he was putting them through. And when Sasuke found him … He would wish he had never thought to cross them.
"I'll get rid of them, all right? You go take a bath and relax," Sasuke said, cupping Naruto's cheek briefly.
Naruto smiled weakly. "Yeah, okay, thanks. Sorry about the carpet by the way. Think that one is a goner for sure."
"Well, I always thought it was an ugly colour anyway," Sasuke retorted lightly and his chest warmed when Naruto chuckled.
The sound was weak, not as deep as usual, but it still sounded lighter than before, and Sasuke would take everything he could get.
For now, he had some bodies to dispose of and a message to send to Suna.
Blue eyes glowed in the moonlight when he slipped into their bedroom two hours later, having taken a quick shower of his own.
"Everything good?" Naruto whispered, keeping his voice low as to not disturbing their son sleeping in the crib right next to the bed.
"Yes, the bodies are in the morgue for now. I had a message sent to Gaara, in case he wants to see proof," Sasuke answered lowly, padding over to the bed.
"I don't think Gaara will think we're lying, but he might want to get rid of them himself," Naruto said idly.
"You okay?" Sasuke asked and slid into the bed next to him.
"As okay as I can be after tonight," Naruto sighed and bandaged fingers rose up to caress Sasuke's cheek. "I'm just glad you're safe," he whispered and their mouths found each other in the dark; the touch gentle and sweet.
"Same here," Sasuke murmured and wrapped his arm around Naruto's waist when the younger man curled up around him.
Perhaps tonight had been a fluke and their enemies had just been random this time, not tied to the man Sasuke and Nara were searching. His gut, however, told him something else, insisted that these two were tied to the man. Why else would they have tried to take out Sasuke with sleeping powder, if not to go after Naruto? Get rid of him first and then go after Naruto had most likely been their plan.
Unfortunately for them, Naruto could be just as ruthless when it came to protecting the ones he loved. Sasuke knew of the reputation he had in the underworld, knew what they said about Naruto. How the Hokage was too gentle, too soft, unable to kill his enemy. How Sasuke was the one they had to look out for, the cold, ruthless one.
There was some truth in it. If Naruto thought an enemy could be swayed, he would try his best to make them see the light and stop the senseless fighting, while Sasuke didn't have that brand of optimism or even patience. He had lost too many people in his life to risk losing Naruto on top of that, so he rather just get rid of the enemy entirely instead of risking them changing their mind after all.
But Naruto could be just as ruthless too when he thought someone wanted to harm Sasuke or their child. Perhaps even more so with Kyuubi backing him up.
The enemy's wrong assumption of Naruto would be their undoing every time. Just like tonight had shown.
Sasuke was determined to make sure that it would stay with this night only. No more attacks, no more enemies lurking around, no more Naruto being forced to step in.
The hunt was on. It was time to show their enemy just how good of a hunter Itachi had made his little brother.
The End
AN2: Honestly, I just wanted to write a protective Naruto and it got a bit more bloody than I expected *clears throat* I hope this wasn't too horrible! (And that you don't mind me adding yet another part to the series *coughs*)
