In Konohagakure
“So it has already been three years” Sasuke thought to himself as he looked up at the clouds passing overhead the large Oak Tree he was currently sitting under. It feels like a lot shorter of a time has passed since leaving the village of Konoha on my personal quest of atonement for my dark past and all the sins I have commited. Way shorter than three years since I stood at the large gates saying my farewells to my two teammates and old sensei that I fought alongside in the Fourth Shinobi World War. Together, with the support of all the other brave shinobi from the great nations we ultimately achieved our goal of achieving peace among the nations by defeating the evil that threatened us all. The same three individuals that just as importantly worked against countless others to save me from myself and bring me back from the darkness that I set out to embrace at such a young age. I told them I had to leave, to travel and see the world and examine it with my newly acquired eyes, and I don’t just mean with this rinnegan that I was given, but with the eyes of someone who is just now able to see the light for the first time in eight years. What I didn’t tell them is that I felt like I didn’t yet feel as if I served a purpose or had found my place where I fit in within the village yet. There were many who still did not trust the Uchiha, and for good reasons, I don’t even trust myself at times. This is why I had to leave. In order to find my place and purpose in the village, I needed to first find myself worth and learn to trust myself again. I also did not know how long that was going to take, and I’m sure you could figure out who wasn’t too thrilled with the whole idea of my leaving. That damn spikey haired idiot.
Three Years Earlier…
“What do you mean you are leaving!? You just freaking came home and we have so much to do in the village!” Naruto yelled in the Uchiha’s face while waving his arms around erratically. While I waited for my idiot of a friend to quit ranting like a lunatic, I spared a quick glance at the other two individuals standing a few paces behind the yellow blur of energy.
In his usual green jacket and black mask hiding most of his face, Kakashi just looked on with an air of mild interest, but Sasuke had known his former sensei long enough and studied the histories thoroughly during his time with Orochimaru to know that Kakashi Hatake was always fully aware of everything going on around him no matter how nonchalant he may seem. Meeting the now matching black eyes of the silver haired man, a quick nod of understanding and acceptance passed between the two ninja. Sasuke then let his eyes travel over to the kunoichi standing rigidly beside Kakashi.
Sakura Haruno. The third member of team seven, and the only other person, other than Naruto, who truly knows Sasuke, what he has been through and especially what all he has done. Just like Naruto, growing up Sakura always believed that there was goodness in Sasuke and helped fight to bring him home to Konohagakure after he made the decision to leave them all. But unlike Naruto, whose faithfulness and firm belief that Sasuke was good never waivered, Sakura’s resolve had faded more and more after one major failed attempt to reach him that ended up almost costing her her life. Sakura use to follow Sasuke around like a loyal puppy and declare her undying love for him every moment she could. Sasuke could see and feel the passion, the flame she held for him everytime he looked into those large emerald eyes. He will also never forget the moment he saw that flame in her eyes for him extinguished forever.
When Sasuke battled Danzo and Sakura and Kakashi attempted once again to bring the Uchiha home by trying to appeal to the humanity that he had locked away deep inside him after learning the truth about his older brother Itachi, it was far too late to reach the despairing teen. Even when he revealed to his two former comrades his deep desire to destroy the home they so desperately wanted to return him too, Sakura’s love for Sasuke still burned so bright. But Sasuke was to far in the darkness for that light to ever reach him. Her love and passion for him burned so strongly that she said she would renounce her own home as well just to be beside him, if only for him to return her love. He saw that bright light illuminating her eyes, and it filled him with such hatred.
Sasuke’s life was lived in the darkness now and that beacon of light that was Sakura only infuriated him further and hurt his evil Uchiha eyes. So he destroyed that light and he would have destroyed the girl if it wasn’t for Kakashi being there to see Sasuke’s intentions at the last moment. It was enough though. Enough to open the young kunoichi’s naive eyes and forever extinguish that flame she held only for him for good. Where they once shone like brilliant gemstones when they gazed upon him, now they were flat and filled with caution and uncertainty of the Uchiha. He was use to it by now. It was the same look he sees in most of the eyes that have looked at him since the end of the war.
Looking at the now seventeen year old girl in front of him, Sasuke could clearly see how much the once young and naive pink haired girl has grown in just a short few years. He guessed war would do that to someone who was as soft and empathetic as Sakura was. Having someone you loved with your whole being try and kill you in cold blood could cause you to grow up pretty quickly as well. Running his gaze over her he could see that her once soft and childish features have grown harder and have begun to transition from adolescent to womanhood. When his eyes finally met hers, he could see no hint of the light that use to reside there, just the shadow that he left there in its place. No blush rose to her cheeks and she didn’t advert her eyes in embarrassment or submission like she used to do. She just returned his cool look with one of her own until Naruto forced her attention onto him.
“Tell him Sakura! We need him here right!? The village needs all the help it can get!”
Looking between Naruto and Sasuke, Sakura just gave a small shrug.
“It is true there is a lot of work that needs done here in the village, but we already have plenty of helping hands. The whole village and even surrounding villages are pitching in where they can, and development is moving at a great pace.” Placing a light hand on Naruto’s chest before he could explode outward again, she gave him a small smile. “And, I think it is a good idea for Sasuke to take some time for himself.” Turning back to the Uchiha, her smile gone, she continued, “and it would be nice to have someone familiar with outside the village to keep an eye and ear out for any activity from any remaining Akatsuki or Madara supporters that I am sure are floating around out there. Someone who can report back to the village with any news. Someone we can trust.” The last word came out a little bit strained, but the blonde was too distracted by the female’s hand still placed on his chest to register her change of tone. Grabbing her hand with his good one, he met her eyes and with a soft blush on his cheeks, let out a sigh and nodded.
“Yea. I can agree with that I guess. There’s no one I trust more to help work some secret surveillance for the village out there. Just hate to have you leaving so soon after you finally returned to us.” Before Sasuke could respond, Sakura gave Naruto’s hand a squeeze to regain his attention and gave him another small smile.
“I think it will be good for Sasuke. And good for all of us and the village. I’m sure he will get back soon Naruto. And speaking of getting back, I’m probably needed back at the hospital.” Sakura turned to look back at the village behind her. “We have a lot of planning ahead of us for the new facilities we are building along with some new medical advancements Lady Hokage and I have been working on.” Sasuke could hear the passion building in her voice as she mentioned the medical work that needed done. It was clear to see the awe Naruto still had for Sakura after all this time as he listened to the words that slipped through her dainty pink lips. Reaching up on her toes she leaned forward and gave naruto a quick peck on his cheek and told him she would see him around. Turning her eyes that were just shining for Naruto to Sasuke he watched them fade out again and Sakura nodded her goodbye to him then turned to leave.
“I’ll walk with you Sakura” Kakashi said from beside her. First though, he strode forward toward Sasuke with his casual laid back stride and took his hand out of his pocket to extend it outward for Sasuke to shake. “Don’t stay away too long okay.” Hatake said as Sasuke took hold of the other ninja’s hand. At first contact Kakashi leaned in close enough that only Sasuke could hear his next words. “But I do hope you find whatever you are searching for.” After the brief moment his sensei leaned back again and his eyes closed to together while his mouth lifted upwards in a smile underneath his black mask. His tone returned to its usual warm laziness, “Hopefully there will be a village still standing here when you return since Naruto doesn’t have anymore wars to fight. Who knows what he will do to occupy his time now, so you best hurry back”. Cocking his silver haired head to the side he turned to join Sakura and raised a hand in goodbye. “See you soon Sasuke”.
“Kakashi Sensei is full of it, ya know” Naruto said and followed it with one of his cheeky laughs he has had since childhood. “I’m not going to destroy anything or anything. We have to focus on rebuilding ya know.” Putting his arms behind his head he grinned at his raven haired friend. “We are gonna make Konoha bigger and better than ever before, and it's only fitting sense it is gonna have the biggest and best Hokage running it here soon, hehe!” Sasuke couldn’t help but smirk at his golden haired idiot of a colleague. If anyone deserves to be a leader it is Naruto, even Sasuke would have to admit that. But of course he could never say such endearing things out loud, especially to Naruto. That loser would never let him forget that he said it. So he simply replied with, “I’m sure it will be great”.
“Hehe, hell yea it will!” Naruto said still grinning. After a few seconds of gloating, the exuberant male dropped his hands from behind his head and his face grew more serious. Sasuke swore Naruto just went from looking like a joyful twelve year old to well bejond his seventeen years of age in just a single moment. “Sasuke, you have to swear that you will be here to witness it okay.” His friends sky blue eyes stared at Sasuke with a seriousness that he still hadn’t seemed to ever get use to seeing take place of the boyish mischief that usually filled them. “You have to make me a promise that you will come back. That you will return home, here with us again.” The Uchiha’s dark eyes could only stare back at the liquid blue fire blazing back at him and nod. That nod must have been enough to suffice because the boyish look returned to Naruto’s eyes and he resumed looking like a seventeen year old again.
“Good. Cause I have some big plans for the future, and I want you to be here to be part of them ya know.” Naruto suddenly averted his gaze and a slight blush began to rise to his cheeks. “You know I’ve always had feelings for Sakura right, well I’m planning on asking her to marry me.” Looking sheepishly back at Sasuke he continued, “and I Know she will say yes, after everything we have been through together, I just have to wait for the right time to ask her ya know. She will say yes...believe it!” he threw up a big thumbs up as if to show his confidence to his friend, or maybe to himself. But returning back to the seriousness of the conversation he asked, “So when will you be back from your journey? Cause obviously you have to be there for the wedding ya know.”
Honestly, Sasuke wasn’t sure when he was going to be returning. When he had decided on going on this quest for atonement, the idea of an end date never once crossed his mind. He just figured he would know when his soul was ready to return to where it belonged. When he felt worthy enough and clean enough to call this village home again. If that was ever possible of happening was unknown to him. He had made Naruto a promise that he would return, and he would die before he broke a promise to the guy, but returning wouldn’t mean he was going to stay for good. He could always just come back for the wedding and leave again if needed. The Uchiha said the only thing he could think of to appease his impatient teammate.
“I will make sure to come back in time to attend your wedding.” That would probably give him five or six years at least to travel the world before he should be hearing about an engagement. For one Naruto and Sakura have just recently started to pursue a romantic relationship as far as he was aware. It was a sort of bitter sweet sentiment to think about really. It’s a confusing feeling to know the individual that had always focused all her love and affection and attention on him is now giving it all to another. Another person who just so happens to be the person who he is closest to in this life. He is happy to see Naruto’s feelings for Sakura are finally being reciprocated, and also knowing that Sakura is able to find someone who may be able to light that fire she once had again. Sasuke knows that he would never be able to truly return those sort of feelings to someone, but he felt almost selfish in wanting to know that someone still cared for him in the way Sakura used to, but it was to late for that now.
Sasuke has come to the understanding that he may never be able to truly have the capacity to love, feel love, or make somebody else feel loved. That was something that he missed out on during his earliest development periods in life. With having his whole family wiped out, and being brought up under Orochimaru, he spent the longest years of his life learning to avoid love and harness hatred. Love is something he hopes to learn more about when he is experiencing the world like he never was able to, like he was always meant to.
“I have a hawk that can carry messages to me while I am out of the village. Lady Hokage will be in constant communication with me during my journey, so you can just let her know when to inform me of your wedding. Whenever it takes place.” The Uchiha has been in constant communication with the Hokage since his return to the village. It has been a requirement of his “probation” as an ex-criminal. This was to make sure that he wasn’t going to change his mind and decide to destroy the village again. He understands it will most likely always be something he is going to have to live with, and he accepts that. Honestly he deserves a whole lot worse. It just so happens that he is lucky that the guy that calls Sasuke his best friends is the same guy who saved the ninja world. If it hadn’t worked out this way he would’ve ended up locked up or eliminated. It was all thanks to Naruto that Sasuke is getting a second chance to life, and he would always be in debt to the guy as long as he lived. His complete loyalty is to Naruto, and as long as Naruto loves the village of Konohagakure, than so will he.
Lady Hokage was more than willing to agree to let Sasuke take his leave of the village for an extended amount of time. Tsunade has enough on her plate with the clean-up after the war and the rebuild of the village, she doesn’t need to spend extra energy and resources babysitting Sasuke.
“Okay, yea. I’ll just let Grandma Tsunade let you know when to come back then,” Naruto said to more himself for a moment, then smiled broadly and held out his hand for Sasuke to clasp as a goodbye. “I’ll plan on seeing you back in about three years then Sasuke.” the blonde fool said confidently. Sasuke couldn’t hold back a smirk and a “hmph” as if to say “yea right” as he clasped Naruto’s outstretched hand with his only remaining one. He is optimistic as ever he noted to himself.
“After all, I am known to be pretty persuasive ya know.” Naruto grinned in response to Sasuke’s reaction to his previous statement. “See you then!”
Present...
Sasuke couldn’t help but grin to himself as he reads the invitation once more. It has almost been three years to the day exactly. He wasn’t surprised really, amused would be more accurate. That spikey haired idiot is definitely a persuasive one, if not extremely determined when he puts his heart and mind to something. Flipping the ornate piece of paper absentmindedly in his hand he noticed a small note scribbled in messy penmanship on the back of the letter.
“You better make it back in time! A best man shouldn’t be late!”
Leaning his head back against the tree he was sitting under, he took a deep breath and couldn’t help but feel the slight excitement building in his chest in response to the yearning and anticipation of wanting to return to the village hidden in the leaves. Return to his village. He could only hope that he was ready for whatever it held for him this time.
