Shikamaru took a drag of his cigarette, feeling the smoke burn as it entered his lungs, trying not to get irritated at his latest assignment but it was difficult...even for him.

It was the main reason Shikamaru and Naruto has joined and it had been a decision that neither one of them had regretted.

Shikamaru glanced over at the door, slightly ajar, his eyes on the raven haired man sitting at the table looking as pissed off as he felt.

He licked his lips.

Now that was a good looking man but it was a pity that he had the attitude of an A grade asshole.

Still, on the bright side, he could think of worst people to be assigned to.

The man was adept at his duties and quite intelligent, something he was privately thankful for.

Shikamaru looked away from his charge, allowing his eyes to lazily scan the alley for any activity once more.

His boss, Kakashi, was expecting trouble from a rival group and with the current problems with the division of territory in the area, there was cause for concern of possible attacks.

He hated nights like this.

It was too quiet.

This restaurant was on a busy street and yet, it wasn't bustling with late night traffic.

He closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the brick, listening for the sounds of the night for a few moments.

Nothing.

Shikamaru cracked open his eyes and glanced over at the building next door, thoughtfully before he stepped back inside and locked the service door behind him.

He continued his slow walk through the kitchen and found the chef, stopping to quietly talk to the man before walking through the restaurant and stepping out into the private room.

“We need to move.” announced Shikamaru calmly into the room.

“Why?” countered the raven haired man sitting at the main table, frowning.

“It's too quiet outside.” replied Shikamaru in the same calm tone.

There was silence at this statement before the room erupted into laughter.

“Young master, you are not going to leave based on the word of this man?” returned one of the men sitting at the table with a slash of his hand in Shikamaru's direction, not bothering to hide his disdain.

Sasuke stared at the man waiting patiently at the entrance of the dining room with another frown marring his handsome features before finally giving a slow nod of acquiescence.

“Yes, I am. Kakashi wouldn't have assigned me an incompetent man. Grab my coat. We are leaving.” replied Sasuke, rising to his feet as he watched the brunette with the weird ponytail give him a brief nod and turn to walk out.

“I don't like it, boss. We don't know this guy. What if he is wrong?” countered a man with a whine in his tone.

Sasuke gave the man a withering glare.

“If he is wrong. I will punish him but if he is right...” returned Sasuke trailing off meaningfully as the brunette returned with a set of keys in his hand.

“Lead the way.” murmured Sasuke to the man, shrugging on his coat and following the brunette as he walked through the restuarant, into the kitchen and past the chef.

“I'm not going anywhere.”

Sasuke turned and glared at the man that spoke.

“Stay or come with me...it doesn't bother me.” returned Sasuke in a brittle tone over his shoulder as he followed the brunette to the service elevator hidden discreetly in the corner.

Sasuke could hear the men arguing but he ignored them, instead focusing his attention on the man currently pushing a key into the slot before the elevator doors opened with a dull ping.

“Make up your fucking minds. I'm leaving now.” hissed out Sasuke over his shoulder, watching the man step inside and hold the door open with a raised brow.

Sasuke muttered a curse under his breath as he strolled into the elevator.

It was old and dilapidated but it seemed to still function fine.

“Don't worry, it's safe but we need to get going. Your girls need to make a decision and quick. I am not sure what we're dealing with and how much time we have but we need to be anywhere but here.” murmured the man.

Sasuke glared at the brunette looking like he wanted to be anywhere but here.

The bastard looked bored but that wasn't anything new.

Kakashi always looked bored too.

He was also correct.

Sasuke watched three men step inside the confined space and asked, “What about the rest?”

“They would prefer to take their chances.” replied one of the men nervously.

Sasuke let out a low sound of disgust as the brunette shrugged and moved his arm, pushing the button.

"Damn fools. I will exit after you. I need to lock the elevator before I leave.” murmured the man with a slight frown marring his brow as the lift stopped its descent with a shudder and a clunk.

Sasuke nodded as the door opened and he found himself staring out into what looked like a covered parking area.

“Take a left out of the elevator, left at the end of the corridor and head over to the stairs on the other side. I will join you shortly.” instructed the man.

Sasuke nodded and walked out, ignoring the grumbling of his men as he followed the man's instructions.

“Where are we?” asked Sasuke, his eyes scanning the space.

“It's the basement level. The stairs lead up to the building next door.” replied a voice behind him.

Sasuke watched the man step forward, unlock the gate to the stairway and push it to one side, the squeak echoing in the cavernous space, bouncing off the concrete walls.

“Let's go.”

“Boss...this is crazy. Sure, Kakashi trusts him but we're moving because 'it's too quiet'.” grumbled one of the men, irritated.

“If it turns out to be bullshit, I will punish his lazy ass but if his concern is genuine...” returned Sasuke, trailing off as he walked up the stairs, listening as the man locked the gates and walked up to the top of the stairs.

“Down the corridor then make a left. Wait for me there.” murmured the man, opening up the door and stepping to one side.

Sasuke was walking down the narrow hall when he heard the muted sounds of angry shouting and then the loud report of gunshot.

“What was that?” rushed out one of the men in a panic.

Sasuke turned abruptly, pinning the man by his throat against the wall.

“What do you think that was, dumb ass? It wasn't fucking party poppers.” bit out Sasuke, giving the man a sharp shake before he stepped back and gave the man walking towards them a nod.

As much as it pained him to admit it, Sasuke owed this man his life.

“Where do we go now?” asked Sasuke with grudging respect for Kakashi's man.

“I need to get you away from here. They will be searching the immediate area once they discover you are not in the restaurant.” returned the brunette with a thoughtful frown.

Sasuke took a breath and nodded, his respect for the man slowly growing.

“Lead the way.” murmured Sasuke, gesturing for the man to move with a wave of his hand.

Shikamaru laid back his head against the edge and closed his eyes, the wash cloth on his face.

He was exhausted.

When they had eventually gotten back to the clan compound two hours later, Kakashi had pulled him in for a private briefing before finally letting him go for the evening.

“I owe you.”

Shikamaru pulled the wash cloth off his face, cracked open one eye at the sound of the voice before he replied with an edge of irritation in his voice, “You owe me nothing. I was just doing my job...young master.”

Sasuke watched as the man lean back once more against the edge of the tub and draped the face washer over his eyes.

“Respect is that important to you? How unusual.” murmured Sasuke, not bothering to hide his amusement.

“Kakashi-san is big on respect. Respect for ourselves guides our morals; respect for others guides our manners.” returned Shikamaru, tugging the cloth off his face with a low sigh.

“Regardless of it being your duty...I am grateful for your insistence that we leave when we did.” returned Sasuke, pulling up a stool and sitting down.

“That makes two of us...I had no desire to be in tomorrow's obituaries.” countered the man with a languid shrug.

“It seemed convenient that they knew where I was, hn?” murmured Sasuke with a frown.

“Yeah, Kakashi-san and I thought the same thing. We believe you were targeted but it didn't work out as planned.” returned the man with a snort.

“I was fortunate that you were assigned to me.” drawled Sasuke watching the man give another sharp snort of disbelief and then curtly shake his head in the negative.

“Kakashi-san may come across as a pervert but he's a brilliant strategist. There is always a reason for everything he does, even down to guard assignments.”

“I just finished talking to Itachi. He had a close call as well.” returned Sasuke quietly, silently admiring the man's tanned lanky frame lounging in the tub.
