Still, why'd Kakashi Sensei have to get a weirdo like this to teach me? Naruto thinks, plodding behind the special jounin. He could even feel the man's apathy towards him, the feeling radiating out of the man like he was a beacon. Everyone always treated him this, so Naruto had mostly learned to ignore it by now, but sometimes it still hurt him deep down. There was only one thing he could do then; find a way to change Ebisu's mind. Nothing came to mind as he followed the older man, who was intent on taking him out to eat, as if Naruto was a friend of his. As the pair came closer, he could smell the noodles and broth cooking, but sadly it wasn't from Ichiraku's ramen stand. The place was a little stand near the outskirts of the village, close to the hot springs. Wait, why would they be going to the hot springs for training? The blond mused this over as they both sat down and ordered their meals. Seems like all the training he wants to do is perverted. Naruto thinks, watching as the older man begins to take a scroll out of his pocket. Curious, he looks at the opened parchment, realizing it is some sort of diagram.
“What's this for?” He asks, to which the sunglasses wearing jounin replies with a demeaning remark.“It's a diagram of the chakra network, but I forget you slept through most of your classes. Silly of me to think you'd have a clue to what this is.”Naruto fumes at this, slightly enraged by Ebisu's comment, but he knew it was slightly true. If he had payed better attention in class, maybe he wouldn't be so lacking when it came to basics like this. Besides, he wasn't much of a book learner, and Naruto preferred to learn through experimentation and trial and error. All that reading and confusing terminology made him even more confused, not that he was dumb, but it flustered him to try and remember things in class when called on. Naruto ignores the man's remark, seeing as how his soup has finally made it to the counter, and begins to chow down. After a few bites, he turns toward the taller man, who is busy eating his own food. They both stop for a second, each waiting to hear what the other was about to say. Naruto starts first, his tone becoming more frustrated as he continues.“Tch. It's not my fault, none of the teachers at the Academy really cared to teach me. Besides, I learn better by doing the exercise than by this kinda stuff. What's the problem with my chakra control, anyways? Kakashi Sensei always said that too, now that I think about it. Something about using up too much chakra, or wasting energy...”Ebisu nods, laying the diagram out on the counter carefully so as not to spill any food on it.“Exactly. When ninja form chakra using physical and spiritual energy, you Naruto, put too much into the process. This makes it so you waste chakra when using jutsu. Once used chakra can't be gotten back, and if you lose all your chakra you die. This is why Kakashi made me your teacher, since he knows I excel at teaching the basics.”Naruto frowns, his face pensive for a moment before speaking out.“Okay, I get it, but why does Sasuke get to train with him? Sakura and I are always asking him for help, but he seems to focus on Sasuke the most.”Ebisu sighs, unsure of how he can explain this situation. He does understand what Naruto is feeling, as favoritism is usually a bad thing for the students who are left behind by their teacher. Still, Sasuke is a pretty special case, being the last Uchiha besides his rouge brother Itachi. Kakashi is the only other person with a Sharingan, the eye technique special to Sasuke's clan, even though he is not an Uchiha.“Kakashi Sensei is...worried about Sasuke. He is the only one in the village who is an Uchiha, one of the greater ninja clans, and he has a traumatic past. Because of this, there are people who might try and take advantage of him, or who just want to kill him because of his lineage. I'm not saying that Sakura and you aren't important to Kakashi, but Sasuke is just higher on his priority list right now, especially since he's going up against Gaara in the finals.”Naruto nods at this, thinking back to their fight with Orochimaru in the Forest of Death. Even though he doesn't remember much of it, the blond does know that the snake summoning ninja was much tougher than any opponent he'd faced so far. He also seemed to have an interest in both Sasuke and him, but Naruto never understood why. Still, the whole thing makes him feel slightly put out and frustrated.“So, the reason people are after Sasuke is because of his Sharingan? It's special, that much I get, but why?”“The Sharingan can only be passed on to members of the Uchiha clan, Kakashi being an exception. Since they have all died out, the power is very rare now, and people enjoy using power for their own ends.”I kinda don't get it, but at the same time it makes sense. So Sasuke's special? Big deal, I'll be even better than him without that lame Sharingan! Naruto thinks, busily slurping down his noodles while Ebisu is explaining. He still doesn't get what this has to do with his training, but at least he has the whole situation with Kakashi Sensei at least partially cleared up. It doesn't make him feel any better about it, however. He'll clear it up with his teacher after the finals, now's the time to train and get stronger. Ebisu notes the determined look on Naruto's face and inwardly smiles. He'd thought the blond would be agitated by this news, but he seems to be taking it better than the jounin thought. They quickly finish their food, the elder man leading Naruto to a small pond near the hot springs. The blond stops moving, hearing the joyful voices of the women splashing in the baths even though they are in the area between the men and women baths.“You pervert! You brought me here so you could peep, I knew it,” he accuses the older man, whose face has taken on a slight pink. Ebisu points to the steaming pool of water in front of them, his face quickly becoming composed.“I did not! We are going to be doing the next step in chakra control training; walking on water. This is the best place to do so, you'll see. But before that...” The jounin trails off, this time unhooking the pouch around his waist and searching around in it. The item he produces is a sheet of paper, quite normal looking to Naruto. Ebisu quickly explains that this paper is used to see the chakra type of the user, which is sometimes helpful in developing one's talents.“Really? Sounds neat! If it'll help me learn new techniques, I'll give it a shot. So I just put my hand on it and focus some chakra into it?”“Yes. That's all there is to it,” Ebisu responds, holding out the paper for the blond to try. It is easy enough for Naruto to concentrate his chakra, letting out a huge amount onto the small sheet of paper. The two of them both gasp in surprise as the paper is soaking wet, meaning Naruto's chakra nature is water. This means that water style techniques are easier for him to learn, and high level fire techniques are almost impossible for him to do. This dampens his spirits a bit, but Naruto is too enthused by imagining what jutsu he'll learn after this water walking exercise is over to care.“Water, hmm? Interesting...Well, before we can start on that, how about you try walking on water? I assume Kakashi-san has not taught you this technique, as it is a higher level form of chakra control. Most genin can't do it right off the bat, even those with good control. I doubt you'll be able to given your track record,” the older man taunts, causing Naruto to frown at the jounin.Cocky jerk! I'll show you, and get it right on the first try! Naruto thinks, his anger fueling him as he tries to build up chakra. He feels the energy flow through his body, then directs it to his feet, the yellow chakra covering them. He ignores the startled shout of his instructor and runs straight toward the water, the chakra in his feet propelling him towards the small spring. He feels almost weightless, the buoyancy of the chakra making his body float upon the water like it was air. He turns and points to his instructor, who is watching him with a smirk on his pale face.“Told you I could do it! I'm--,” the blonde starts, before feeling the energy in his feet disappear. The weightlessness he once felt is completely gone, and his body plummets into the steaming water. The blonde sputters curses as he rises to the surface, quickly climbing out of the spring. A small laugh erupts from his teacher's lips, causing Naruto to look up at his face, scowling.“What's so funny, closet pervert?”“Name calling won't do any good on me,” Ebisu starts, his tone mocking and smug, “You were overconfident in your abilities; that is a fatal mistake one can never afford to make in the heat of battle. It could get you killed. Water walking is not as simple as just manipulating chakra to one's feet; the pulse of the water must also be taken into account.”“What's that mean?” Naruto questions, still angry with his teacher. He might as well listen though, since complaining won't get him far. He has no desire to fall into the hot spring again.“It means that you must balance your chakra output in your feet to offset the current of the waves. The tree did not move, so you did not have to account for outside influences in manipulating your physical and spiritual energy. This is different. The water is constantly moving, shifting in balance and flow, so you must take that into account when focusing chakra. Too much, and you risk the water forming around your leg. Too little and you will sink, like you personally observed.”“So that's it? All I gotta do is balance the chakra on my feet? Sounds easy enough,” Naruto comments, to which his teacher grins. There's no way he'll be able to do it. Someone like him, a demon and a fool like Naruto couldn't do it. The jounin thinks, crossing his arms over his chest as a sort of mental defense mechanism. He'd be shocked if the boy actually managed it on his first try; Naruto had come close though. The blond is already at it again, his feet glowing a stark yellow to match his spiky locks. He makes it a couple steps across the water, before instantaneously being dropped into the steamy spring. It takes him a couple seconds to resurface, his skin beginning to turn slight pink from the heat generated by the water.“Damn, this is really hot! I ain't giving up though, no way. I'll figure this out,” Naruto mutters to himself, slightly disappointed with his progress. There was no visible change from his first attempt, but he understands it will take him some time. Just like with the shadow clone jutsu, he has to work hard to get it. That's how its always been for him when it came to ninjutsu; he's accepted it as fact and learned to live with it. After learning he had the Nine Tails in him though, and after his bout with Haku, Naruto has started to think differently. Is it the fox causing him trouble with his chakra control? Is it purposefully denying him his dream, his desire to become Hokage? If it is, then he'll just have to keep working to beat it! If there was a way for him to use the fox to his advantage, to turn his curse into a blessing, then he would be all for it.… … …Feels like a bad rehash of the anime/manga, but it'll get better as I think up more ideas. I like it when canon can be manipulated into something more malleable. I feel disappointed with myself right now, sorry. Too many ideas, not enough time. Sorry toMelodyPotterSnape for putting up with my BS: I tend to often forget things and leave them. I mainly posted this to show I'm doing something. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
