Teardrops
His head told him it was foolish. His heart demanded that he do it. Yes, she was safe in Konoha. Yes, she would ask to go with him. Doing this could only bring them both pain. But he just couldn't help it. Kisame had to see Hinata again. So, when Pein finally gave him a rare solo mission, he had slipped off. Luckily, Konoha was only a couple days' travel from his mission destination, so his extended absence could easily be explained. He had encountered no problems along the way, and arrived at the main gates to the village early in the afternoon. Deciding it would be better to wait until nightfall to infiltrate, Kisame made sure his chakra was carefully masked and settled in the high branches of a tree to wait and watch the people as they passed by. About an hour before sunset, a smile made its way onto Kisame's face as he felt a familiar chakra signature. It was her. His heart started pounding in anticipation. Would she look well? Had she taken care of herself? After what seemed like an eternity she appeared, walking from the edge of the forest towards the gate. Two other shinobi walked beside her. From their appearance and Hinata's previous descriptions, he identified them as her teammates, Aburame Shino and Inuzuka Kiba. A large white dog followed behind them. Judging by their sweaty faces and tired expressions, Kisame figured that they must have just come from the training grounds. As they passed beneath him, Kisame's gaze focused solely on Hinata. Her head was dropped, eyes fixed on the ground as she walked. Her long, raven-colored hair ruffled lightly in the breeze. She pulled her lavender jacket closer as they passed another team exiting the gate on their way to night training. Her teammates didn't seem to notice her discomfort. Kisame willed her to look back. He wanted to see the expression in her pale lavender eyes. Was she just being shy, or was something truly wrong? As if on command, just before she reached the gate, Hinata raised her head and turned around. She had a puzzled look on her face, like she wasn't sure whether or not she had left something behind, and was wondering if it was worth it to go back and check. Kisame's breath caught in his throat when he saw her eyes. They looked so … tormented. Evidently, their forced separation had taken a heavy toll on more than just him. Guilt rose like a plague. If only he hadn't let her go on that mission. Then she never would have been mortally wounded and in need of the Hokage's healing abilities. The dog-nin beside her said something unintelligible, and Kisame could only watch as she nodded and followed her teammates into the village, disappearing from sight. He was about to go after her, consequences be damned, when voices below him made him stop. It was the other team of ninja. They had paused beneath his tree and were staring back at the gate. "Hey, wasn't that kunoichi Hyuuga Hinata?" the first voice asked. "Yeah." the second shinobi replied. "The clan princess herself. She was the one that cried all the time at the academy, right?" "No, no. That was Haruno Sakura. Hinata was the one who stuttered." the first answered. "That's right! 'I'm H-huuga-hime. M-my d-daddy s-says since I'm t-the heir, I c-can b-be a s-shinobi if I w-want to! H-he has m-more money than K-kami, you k-know!'" the second mocked in a high pitched, pouty voice. "Well, she's not such a good girl anymore." the kunoichi of the team chimed in. "I heard that when she was captured, she whored herself to the Akatsuki to save her own skin. And when her daddy found out about it, he renounced her as his heir and kicked her out of the compound." "Pathetic." the first shinobi scoffed. "C'mon guys, we'd better get going. Sensei will be angry if he finds out we haven't started training by the time he arrives." the second shinobi said as he walked off, hands in his pockets. His teammates trailed after him, still laughing and joking with each other. Above them, Kisame ground his teeth in rage. His anger seethed and boiled until it consumed him. How dare they talk about Hinata like she was some kind of cheap, spoiled prostitute! A feral gleam came to his eyes and a savage smirk replaced his frown. They had just made the last mistake of their lives. He took one last look at the gate before turning and picking up the doomed team's scents. At least he would have something fun to do until it was time to see Hinata. xxxxxxxxxxxx Hinata sighed as she quickly ate her dinner. She was hot, tired, and lonely. All she wanted to do was take a nice long bath and go to sleep. She would have skipped the meal entirely, but she had a meeting first thing in the morning, and she didn't want to feel like she was going to starve to death through the whole thing. After cleaning her dishes and putting them away, she walked down the short hall to her bedroom. Her apartment was small, but more than adequate for her needs. She spent most of her time training or on missions, so all she really needed was the bare essentials: kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. She had a decent sized living room, but it was rarely used. Raising the window beside her bed, she inhaled the warm summer air. The sun had already set, and it was rapidly growing dark. A slight breeze was blowing, so she left the window up to circulate air in the room. Pulling a pair of pajamas out of her dresser, she made her way to the bathroom. Turning the water on in the tub, she stripped out of her sweaty training clothes. As she waited for the water to rise, she stepped over to the mirror. She was slightly shocked at what she saw. Pale, haunted eyes stared back at her, in a face that looked aged far beyond her 21 years. If Kisame ever saw her like this, he would chide her for not caring for herself better. But she just couldn't help it. Nothing seemed to matter anymore. Not the way she looked or how she dressed. Not even what she ate or where she went. She just stumbled through the motions of life automatically. Outside, she seemed like the same old Hinata. Inside, she felt like she was dying without him. Turning away from the mirror, she shut off the faucet and climbed into the tub. Leaning back, she let the hot water soothe her aching muscles. She tried to relax mentally, but out of habit, her worries turned towards a rainy little village to the north. She wondered what Kisame was doing right now, and if he missed her. She wondered if her partner was okay, or if he still blamed himself for her injuries. She even wondered how Hidan was doing without her around to chase his psychotic kitten. 'He probably talked Tobi into doing it.' she thought with a small smile. Pushing the thoughts away and closing her eyes, she allowed the face of her lover to coalesce before her. Kisame might not be handsome by conventional standards, but each line and curve of his hard face was infinitely precious to her. And she had lost him. Tears welled up in her eyes. Uncaring, she let them fall, streaming down her face to mingle with the warm water caressing her shoulders. During the day she tried to be strong, to be glad she was back in Konoha with her friends. But at night she embraced her sorrow, letting her soul rage and scream for the loss of the one man that she loved more than any other. When her shuddering sobs had stilled, and her bathwater long gone cold, she sighed heavily and stood, water sloshing back to the tub as it sluiced off her. Mechanically, she drained her water and stepped out of the tub before she dried off and dressed. After making sure everything was in order, she reached for the doorknob… and froze. Someone was in her bedroom. Instantly alert, she activated her Byakugan. She couldn't directly sense any chakra, but she could see it clearly, near her bed. Pulling a kunai from its hiding place underneath her sink, she took a deep breath and eased the door ajar. With all the stealth she could muster, she made her way into the darker room. Her bedside lamp was on, casting amber shadows across her mattress and the intruder. Hinata's breath caught in her throat and her weapon dropped to the floor with a dull thud, completely forgotten. There, lounging on her bed with his hands behind his head, was Kisame. He wore the same blue pants and mesh shirt she had seen him in last, the muscles in his bare arms bulging from years of wielding Samehada. Said sword sat propped up in the corner, his cloak and forehead protector draped over the hilt. Without its support, his navy locks drooped downward, falling over his ears and framing his face. When he noticed her standing there, he smirked. Fresh tears streamed down Hinata's face as she took in the figure she had longed for months to see. "Kisame." she breathed. "Hummingbird, come here." he commanded softly, using his favorite nickname for her. Forcing herself into action, Hinata was across the room in an instant, nearly jumping into his waiting embrace. Strong arms wrapped around her, pulling her close. Kisame buried his face in her hair, inhaling deeply. She smelled just as wonderful as he remembered, a delicate mingling of woods, water, and woman. Mixed in was the lilac oil she used for her bath. His grip tightened as her lips found his neck and she kissed him desperately. His body sprang to life, responding to her familiar touch. Kami, how he missed this. Pulling back, he cupped her damp face in his hands. Their gazes locked, and a million words passed between them without a sound. Using his thumbs, Kisame gently wiped away the tears tracking her cheeks before leaning forward and capturing her lips. Moving slowly, he savored the taste and feel of her skin against his. His heart was content to stay in the moment, but his body wanted more. Desire ripped through him, his primal side demanding he take what was his and sate his growing lust. He pushed it aside. He wanted to enjoy every second of the short time they had together. Sliding one hand around to the back of her head, he deepened the kiss. Hinata wrapped her arms around Kisame, fingers skimming over his broad shoulders and around the thick muscles of his neck. She missed this so much. Her sorrow fled and her heart felt as if it would explode from the happiness that was now consuming her. She just wanted to sink into him, wrap herself around him and stay like that forever. A light moan escaped her when she felt his warm tongue slide over her lower lip, asking for entrance. Immediately, she opened up for him, wanting no barriers between them. He slowly explored every inch of her mouth, and with each stroke, her body responded, sparking desire until her blood was racing in her veins. Lack of air finally defeated them and they broke apart, breathing heavily. "It looks like someone missed me." Kisame teased with a grin. "And here I was worried that you would forget me." A light blush dusted Hinata's cheeks and she smiled up at him. "Of c-course I missed you." she replied seriously. "And I could never forget you." Leaning forward, she kissed him again. This time, he responded hungrily. Sitting up straight, Kisame pulled her flush against him. Using his shoulders to steady herself, she straddled his lap. She wouldn't dream of being this bold with anyone else, but she had complete trust in Kisame. A low growl rumbled in his throat as she made contact with his manhood. His desire resurfaced, and it was becoming increasingly difficult for him to go slow. Restraint wasn't exactly his forte, and the things she was doing to his body were pushing his already stretched limits. The fact that it had been months since he was last with her didn't help any either. Releasing his hold on her, he ran his palms down her back until he cupped her bottom. Kneading gently, he ground against her core until she moaned softly in his mouth. Hinata tightened her grip on Kisame's neck as a wave of pleasure coursed through her. He was making her feel incredible already, but she wanted more. Her fingers ran down the muscles in the back of his neck, lightly massaging until she made contact with the top of his mesh shirt. Breaking their kiss, she leaned back and frowned. She needed to touch all of him, to feel his smooth skin under her fingers. Running her hands down his chest, she found the hem of the material and tugged upward. Smirking at her eagerness, Kisame helped her shed his mesh, dropping it carelessly over the side of the bed. Leaning back on his hands, he allowed her to do as she pleased. With a shy smile, she closed the distance between them and kissed him lightly on the lips. Kisame's eyelids slid shut as she slowly ran her small hands down his chest, sending a fresh wave of desire rolling through his body. Hinata let her fingers wander at will over the sharp planes of Kisame's chest. Not a single line of his muscular torso escaped her attention. She watched the rise and fall of his ribs become more rapid as he was affected by her caresses. It still amazed her that she could do that to him. She, a nobody kunoichi who was rejected by her own family, could bring one of the world's most talented and feared shinobi virtually to his knees. She felt both powerful and humbled at the same time. Letting her hair fall around her face, Hinata leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on the hollow at the base of his throat. His bluish gray skin was smooth and warm, and smelled just as inviting as she remembered. Venturing downward, her mouth followed the path her fingers had taken. A low groan escaped Kisame as she purposefully pressed a kiss to the sensitive spot directly below his sternum. Her soft mouth and her hair trailing over his skin were nearly too much for his tenuous restraint. The muscles in his arms quivered with the effort to stay still. Then she reached the waistband of his pants. He shuddered when her tongue flicked out of her mouth, dipping below the material, and traced the seam that divided flesh and cloth. That was it. Control snapping, he sat up quickly, forcing her backward as he moved. Before she had time to react, he had a hold of her, pressing her back until she was pinned to the mattress, mouth hungrily devouring hers. Hinata gasped in surprise as their positions were suddenly reversed. One second she was on top, enjoying the feel of her lover's body beneath her, the next she was flat on her back, his sudden fervor catching her completely off guard. Regaining her senses, she returned Kisame's frenzied kisses, matching the forceful thrusts of his tongue with her own. His desire ignited hers, and her body caught fire, starting low in her stomach and spreading outward. She arched up into him, an offering for him to satisfy his need. As their bodies made contact, Kisame broke their kiss and buried his face in Hinata's neck. His fingers tangled in her hair, tilting her head back, giving him more access to her sensitive flesh. Kissing his way down the column of her throat, he found the tendon at the base. Drawing her skin into his mouth, he bit down lightly, marking her as his once again. Hinata cried out at the sharp sensation. It was a piercing mix of pain and pleasure that made her belly tighten as it washed over her. Closing her eyes, she gave herself up to feeling as Kisame blazed a path down her chest with his mouth. When he reached the top of her camisole, he lifted his head long enough to pull the silky barrier off before returning to his conquest of her body. The light from the lamp fell across her pale breasts, and it drew his attention like a magnet. Hinata moaned as Kisame's mouth closed around her nipple. He let his fingers trail over her other breast, stopping at the peak to rub circles around her skin with his thumb. Her head grew hazy with the pleasure he was eliciting in her, and she wrapped her arms around his shoulders, seeking an anchor. Another wave rolled over her, and she raked her nails down his back. A sharp sting brought her back down to reality and she gasped as he bit down on her breast. Realizing that her cry was one of pain, Kisame suddenly stilled. Releasing his hold on her and inhaling deeply, he let her scent fill his head and calm him. He had to slow down. He was so close to giving in to his primal side. If that ever happened, he would surely hurt her. And he would never forgive himself for it. He lifted his head to gaze at her when he felt her gentle hands on his back, holding him close, trying to comfort him. She was so gentle and forgiving. Guilt washed over him as he thought of the pain he had caused her. He didn't deserve her. He wasn't good for her. But he loved her. Determined to make up for hurting her, Kisame crawled up Hinata's body and kissed her softly on the lips. Mumbling an apology against her mouth, he kissed her again. He felt her hands on his face and he lifted his head to look at her. He was surprised to see that she was smiling. "Kisame." she said his name breathily. "I'm f-fine. You didn't hurt me and I won't b-break." Hinata wrapped one arm around his neck and tangled her other hand in his loose hair. Drawing him back down, she kissed him fiercely. This was what she loved the most about him. He was so strong and powerful. Lethal in battle. But with her, he was unfailingly gentle and considerate, going against his very nature to try and please her. He would probably feel bad if she accidentally stubbed her toe. It was something she had never had before, and she treasured it. And when she had lost him, it nearly killed her. But he was back for now, and she was determined to make every second count. Pouring her feelings into their kiss, Hinata pulled him even closer to her and wrapped her legs around his thighs. Kisame trailed a hand down her face as they kissed, tracing the line of her throat until he reached her collarbone. He let his mouth follow, nibbling her soft skin as he went. His hand continued to roam, exploring the curve of her breast, down her side and to her hip. He stopped there, running his thumb in small circles over her hipbone, still encased in the satin of her pajama shorts. His mouth closed over her breast again, and he let his tongue swirl lazily over her peak. She moaned and tried to arch into him, but he kept her still with one hand as his mouth teased her nipple. Lust hit him hard as the sound of her desire filled his head, but he resisted. He wouldn't screw this up a second time. Hinata whimpered when he left her breast to kiss his way down her smooth stomach. Her legs slid up his hard body as he moved, the feeling of him there making her stomach clench in anticipation. When he reached the waistband of her shorts, he glanced up at her flushed face and smirked an instant before he ran his tongue under the edge of the fabric, teasing her the same way she did him. Pushing the top down with his chin, Kisame plundered the skin just above her core. With every kiss and stroke of his tongue, he could feel her desire mount. She squirmed and pressed up into him until he had to throw his arm across her stomach to keep her still. Hinata gripped the bedsheets in tight fists as she tried to suppress the moan that slipped out anyway. A fine sweat broke out on her body. She was so hot and restless. And the ache inside her was unbearable. Her blood was on fire as it raced through her veins at the command of her pounding heart. Her breathing became rapid as he hit the sensitive area around her hipbone. Unable to take any more, she reached down and tangled her hand in his hair to get his attention. "Kisame," she said between pants "p-please. I c-can't wait any longer." Heeding her plea, he kissed her belly one last time before sitting up. Grabbing the edge of her shorts, he slowly slid them down her legs, letting his hands trail over her skin as he went. Pulling them completely off, he dropped the garment to the floor. The full force of her desire hit him then, and he hardened painfully. Removing his own pants quickly, he settled between her legs. Wanting to make absolutely sure she was ready for him, he ran a finger down her swollen cleft. He slowly entered her, first with one finger, then with two. She moaned and lifted her hips as her inner muscles clamped down on his digits. Kisame slowly stroked her, drawing out every ounce of feeling possible. When he was sure she was on the verge of orgasm, he withdrew. She whimpered and arched up, pleading with her body for more. Leaning over her, Kisame laced his hands with hers and kissed her hotly as he buried himself up to the hilt in one quick stroke. The sudden invasion into her already sensitized body was too much. Hinata came hard as ecstasy engulfed her, sending her mind and body spiraling out of control. She bucked wildly as her nails dug into the back of his hands and an indistinguishable sound was torn from her throat, muffled by Kisame's mouth. When she came back down, Kisame had his face buried in her neck. His thrusts had settled into a steady rhythm, and with each stroke, small aftershocks went coursing through her body, making him groan as her muscles spasmed around him. The friction made her feel amazing, and she wrapped her shaky legs around his waist, drawing him deeper within her. His pace increased and she suddenly felt heat building within her once again. Arching upward, she met him thrust for thrust. Kisame rose up to his knees and grabbed her hips. The change in angle allowed him deeper access, and Hinata clung to him as another orgasm shook her body. He growled as her muscles clamped down around him, sheathing him tightly. The primal beast within him roared to the surface, and this time he embraced it, knowing she was sated and that he wouldn't last much longer. Losing control, he pounded into her. When he felt his release near, he buried himself as far as he could go and cried out as his seed spilled deep within her. Shaking and spent, Kisame felt himself falling forward. He caught himself with his hands to keep from crushing Hinata with his weight. As he hovered over her, she looked up at him and smiled. Her face was flushed and her light lavender eyes were still clouded from their lovemaking. He returned her gentle smile before closing the distance between them to softly kiss her on the lips. She wrapped her arms around him and he sat up, bringing her with him. Leaning backward, he lay down on her pillow, Hinata draped across his chest. Her head was just over his heart and she closed her eyes, savoring the sound of his life pounding beneath her ear. Kisame rubbed her back lightly as their breathing returned to normal and their heartbeats slowed. They lay silently for a long while, just savoring each other's presence. A light breeze coming in the open window danced around them, cooling their heated bodies. Kisame looked out to see that the moon had fully risen and was flooding the room with its pale light. With a frown, he turned back to the woman resting on his chest. He dropped a kiss on top of her head before whispering quietly, "I'll have to go soon. If they catch me here, you'll be in trouble." Hinata didn't answer, just clutched his arms desperately, unwilling to let him go. Kisame sighed heavily. Gripping her torso he rolled to the side, so that she was resting on the mattress but still in his embrace. Her face was still pressed to his chest, and her breath whispered across his skin like a warm caress. He tightened his hold on her. "Don't worry," he whispered, "I'll wait until after you're asleep to go." Hinata continued to listen to the strong heart beneath her ear. It soothed her as sadness threatened to creep up on her again. Still she didn't answer, knowing the only things she wanted to say would cause him pain. She wanted to go with him. He wanted her to stay. Not because he didn't want her, but to keep her safe. Even though they were both shinobi, his life was far more dangerous than hers. They had tried being together once, and it had nearly cost him her life. So he was determined to keep her alive, even at the cost of their happiness. But what kind of life did she have without the one she loved more than any other? Suddenly tired beyond reason, Hinata pushed the thoughts out of her head and let his steady breathing lull her to sleep. She didn't want to be awake when he left. It would be too painful and she knew she wouldn't be able to stop herself from begging to go with him. And she didn't want him to see her cry again. She wanted to be strong for him, but in that moment, she knew it would break her. So she did as he asked and let the exhaustion from her body seep into her mind, and soon she felt the world go hazy as sleep overtook her. Kisame closed his eyes and listened to the sound of Hinata's breathing and let her scent wash over him as he held her. This was so unfair to both of them. If only things could be different. But life was always full of hard choices, and a shinobi's life overflowing with them. A missing nin's even more so. He interrupted his thoughts when he noticed that Hinata's breathing had become soft and regular. She had fallen asleep. He opened his eyes and stared down at her face. It had once again taken on that innocent expression that he loved so much. Moving as gently as he could, Kisame disentangled himself from Hinata and slid out of the bed. She frowned in her sleep but didn't wake. He pulled her comforter over her naked body, and leaned down to kiss her one last time. He paused when he saw a single tear emerge from beneath her closed lids and slide down her cheek. So, even as she slept, she knew he was going. Using his index finger, he traced the droplet's path down her damp skin. Pain cut through his soul. Unable to look at her like that, he turned away. Kisame began retrieving his clothes and silently dressing. A few minutes later, and he was ready to go. He grabbed Samehada and strapped him to his back before returning his forehead protector to its customary place. Taking a last glance at Hinata, he smiled. She had snuggled under the covers and had her face buried in the pillow where he had lain. Letting the scene burn into his memory, he turned and stepped up onto the windowsill. A gust of wind blew the swaying curtains and he was gone. xxxxxxxxxxxx Hinata awoke the next morning feeling better than she had in months. She had slept like a log, and only woke when the sun's rays had touched her face. Rolling onto her back, a bittersweet smile crept onto her face as memories of the night before assailed her. Kisame had come to her. She let the warmth of his touch flood her soul even as the pain of losing him again threatened to consume her. It was a strange feeling, to be whole and broken at the same time. Pushing her swirling emotions back, she sat up and looked over at the alarm clock. Oh, shit. If she didn't leave right now, she was going to be late for her meeting with the Hokage. Jumping up, she ran to the bathroom to shower quickly. Ten minutes later she was speeding through the streets of Konoha. She was concentrating so hard on where she was going, she missed the hushed tones and worried faces of the people around her. She only slowed once she reached the massive staircase leading up to the Hokage's office. She had just made it to Tsunade's door when she heard two ninja pass behind her, talking with worried voices. "Hey, did you hear about the attack last night?" "At the northern training grounds?" "Yeah, evidently, a whole cell was annihilated before their teacher could arrive to start the training." "What do you think happened?" "I heard that they..." The pair drifted out of Hinata's hearing range. There had been an attack? Was Kisame involved? Praying he hadn't been caught after he left her, Hinata knocked on the Hokage's door and was commanded to enter. She stepped in to find the rest of her team already there. Tsunade was frowning as Shizune spoke to her in a hushed tone. Stepping to the middle of the room, Hinata bowed before moving to stand between Kiba and Shino. Tsunade nodded to her before she began speaking. "I'm afraid we'll have to postpone the mission I was going to assign you this morning. We had an unfortunate incident last night involving a team of our ninja. They were beginning night training when they suffered some sort of attack. We didn't find any evidence of wounds, but all three had been drowned, with no water for miles around. Kurenai, I want your team to head to the area and begin an investigation immediately. If you don't have any questions, you are dismissed." They had just bowed and started to file out of the office when a medic-nin rushed past them and dropped before the Hokage in a deep bow. Too out of breath to speak, he handed Tsunade a slip of paper. Unfolding it, the Hokage frowned as she began reading aloud. "Those who mock my Hummingbird shall sing no more." Glancing up at the messenger, she narrowed her eyes. "Where did this come from?" Finally catching his breath, the medic-nin spoke. "Forgive me, Hokage-sama. The note was in the hand of the deceased kunoichi we examined this morning. It looked important, so they sent me with it to you." "Thank you, you are dismissed." Bowing again, the medic-nin left, followed by Kurenai and her team. Shino and Kiba looked at each other before turning to Hinata. "What do you think that was about?" Hinata just shrugged. "No idea." Inwardly, she couldn't help a small smile. There was no doubt about it, it was him. Kisame had protected her from the ninja in her home village. She had no idea what they had said about her, but evidently, it was bad enough to set him off. And he left a warning for anyone else stupid enough to cross her. Not that anyone would have a clue who the note referred to, but they would be scared and guessing for weeks anyway. Turning her attention to where she was going, Hinata's lips set in a determined line. He had risked exposure and capture to not only see her, but to defend her honor. Now it was her turn to protect Kisame. She had a mission that she vowed to see fail. No matter the cost.
