“He’s getting worse,” Naruto mumbled as the heat from the tan forehead seeped into the back of his hand. His brother had been fighting a cold for a few days now and they were out of medicine. He would have to make a run into the city, something that he didn’t like, but had to be done.
“You’re going to run, aren’t you?” A soft voice chimed in from the door. The man leaning against it with his arms crossed as he took in the worried form of the other man.
“I have no choice, Itachi,” was the answer as Naruto stood and stretched. It was a fifteen mile trip into the small city, it wasn’t too crowded and he was never noticed. Of course it helped that he had done recon when he was in the military, so it was second nature to him.
“I’ll give you a list then, just don’t travel at night,” the man sighed as he walked further into the room and pulled paper off the shelf. “You’re lucky I’m a doctor.”
“I’m lucky I found you at all,” Naruto snorted as he moved to the others side, watching him scribble down medications and other supplies. It was a simple list, the most simple one he had in months.
“We’ve already had that discussion, love.” Itachi murmured as he pulled Naruto to his side and nuzzled the blond head. He knew that Naruto was concerned for his brother, Kurama, and what would happen to him if he couldn’t fight off the infection.
“Yeah, I’ll be home in two days.” Naruto pulled away from the strong arms and left the room, wanting Kurama to just rest and fight off his illness. “I won’t take the gun this time, it was too risky using it on the last run.”
Itachi hummed as he watched Naruto gather the supplies he needed. He didn’t like the runs, but they were necessary from time to time and with the summer waning, Naruto wouldn’t be able to make as many runs come winter. Their pantry was already full and they had to start a stock of canned goods in the extra bathroom.
Naruto slung a backpack over his shoulder and grabbed his hunting bow. He had thanked every deity that he hadn’t sold his father’s bow for a bit of extra cash. It had been a blessing in disguise and the easiest thing he could use right now in substitute of a gun. The bow was more silent than the loud boom of gun when fired, and Naruto just didn’t feel like taking chances.
One last look was given to the bedroom door before Naruto turned to Itachi. He knew that the other man didn’t want him to go, but it had to be done. He couldn’t stand losing another family member to the madness that had plagued the world.
But Itachi had suffered more than he had, he had no clue what had happened to his baby brother. All Naruto knew was that the young man was just done with surgery for his eyes when the outbreak had happened. Itachi hadn’t been able to be there due to an emergency within the family.
When Naruto had found him wandering in the forest, the man had been consumed with so much guilt, that it had been weeks before they could even get him to speak. It was heartbreaking to learn Itachi’s story and that he had lost someone precious to him in such a way. The not knowing ate him up until Naruto finally snapped him out of it.
His military training had desensitized him for the most part, so logically he could tell Itachi that it wasn’t his fault that his brother had been left behind and that sometimes it was better not knowing. For all he knew, the young man could have woken and found a group to live with.
Naruto shuddered as he thought about the groups, they were nothing more than living monsters. The few decent people he had ran across had told him horror stories of communities started and ran by vicious men who did horrible things to keep their ‘people’ entertained. Of course there had been offers to go to the communities, but Naruto understood human nature and had refused.
With all his supplies gathered, Naruto gave Itachi a small, reassuring smile. He gave his lover a small peck on the lips, words weren’t needed. It was a ritual they started ever since they became lovers. Itachi didn’t want to think on the possibility that Naruto would never return. And if he never did, it would be just him and Kurama. Naruto had made them swore that they would never come looking for him. They were inexperienced when it came to going into the city and didn’t know all the safe routes to take or the best places to hide.
Naruto turned around, straightened his shoulders, and went into what his brother had fondly called, ‘military mode.’ He needed a clear head for what he was about to do. As he set off into the woods, carefully missing the traps he had set around the cabin and garden, he realized that all the pharmacies had been raided and didn’t have they needed. His only option was the hospital and he resisted the urge to shiver. The hospital was one of the more dangerous places to venture into, but there was a guarantee that the medication was still in there.
The bow was pulled into his hand as he reached the main highway a few hours later, but he didn’t walk along the pavement, instead he walked beside it a few yards away. Naruto’s eyes actively scanned the area around, searching for any threat. An arrow was at the ready if the need to pull was necessary. It wasn’t that he liked to kill, but it was a thing that needed to be done in order to survive.
It seemed that the highway was clear for now, the cars still abandoned and covered with dust on the inside. It looked lonely out there, a few mutilated bodies littered the pavement. Naruto couldn’t look away, no matter how much he wanted to and how many times he had seen the same scene. It angered him that the military hadn’t been able to protect the people, but they ignorant back then of just exactly they were facing.
Nothing could have prepared them for the disaster that had broke out and no matter what the military had done, no course of action succeeded. Their biggest mistake was having the masses migrate to the bigger cities. A death trap had been created when the cities were flooded with citizens. It only spread the disease faster, jumping from person to the person. Of course the CDC was already responding when the initial outbreak happened, but they were having difficulty figuring out how the virus worked.
It was precious time that was wasted and soon, just within a few weeks, civilization collapsed around the globe. The masses congregating in the city had been the biggest mistake, and Naruto had told his superiors from the beginning. Years of recon gave him the foresight needed to suggest what needed to be done, but he was ignored since he wasn’t that high of a ranking officer.
The military had doomed them all, and Naruto abandoned his post. He tried at first to motivate people to do as he said, but they were confident in their military and government. And he shook his head sadly as he went to retrieve his mother and brother.
Losing his mother had been the hardest part of the whole ordeal. She had been battling cancer for the longest time and he had no clue that her health had declined so badly that she couldn’t move from the bed. Kushina had been the strongest woman Naruto had ever known and loved her dearly. But she had been abandoned by Hospice once news of the outbreak happened.
Instead of immediately going to the cabin and leaving his mother to die, both brothers had stayed with their mother. Her house was off the main road a few miles and surrounded by woods, almost like the cabin he lived in now. They were sure they would be fine there for at least a few weeks, they wanted their mother to have a proper burial in this world gone crazy.
It wasn’t long before Kushina’s body had given out and she took her breath, but not before telling her boys to be strong. Naruto and Kurama had cried when they lost her, petting her hair away from her forehead lovingly. They had left the door open to go prepare her grave. Before now, they couldn’t have brought themselves to do so and had left it last minute.
A few hours of grueling work, after picking the right spot in the sun, they had returned the house only to find her body gone. Naruto’s hand automatically went to the pistol he kept on his hip while Kurama had stayed behind him as they searched the house. They didn’t understand how their mother’s body could have disappeared and when they had found her, it was something that neither man had been prepared for.
Shaking his head, Naruto dispelled the thoughts. He hated thinking of that time and what he had to do, nightmares still plagued him in the dark of the night. He was on the edge of the city and couldn’t lose himself in memories of the not so distant past. One wrong move could mean the end of him and leaving his lover and brother wondering what happened to him.
The streets were still wrecked, military vehicles abandoned and sitting silently on the streets. Decaying flesh made its smell known as it wafted up from the streets. The bodies had been there for months, the sun drying them out and influencing the already foul odor.
Naruto was accustomed to it now, sadly enough. He imagined that the smell had to have been worse there on ground level. The towering buildings and pavement drawing the heat of the sun to the very core. He took a rest on the rooftop, it was the safest way to travel and he had every jump memorized.
He relaxed against the railing behind and took out a piece of bread, he always brought food along just in case things went south and he needed to hide for a few days. His bow laid at his side, within easy reach. Just because the rooftops were safe in the past didn’t mean things couldn’t change. Everything was dangerous in numbers.
He looked up to the sky and noticed that it was a little past midday. That meant he was a little ahead of schedule and he could return home soon. The hospital was two buildings down and the jumps were very easy. But it was what was inside that would give him the most trouble, provided that it wasn’t empty.
Standing and brushing the crumbs off his clothes, Naruto grabbed his bow and walked to the edge of the building. He chanced a peek down below and scowled at what he saw. They were down there, milling around as if there was nothing better to do. A few were even sitting, staring listlessly at nothing in particular.
They probably couldn’t even smell him over their own stench. The undead packed a pretty foul smell and nothing could overpower it. But Naruto too it as a blessing, since it meant that they couldn’t smell the live flesh that was lurking above them. The undead were odd, he had to admit. They had no thinking functions, well they had one, food. If they had an inkling that a meal was above them, they would find a way to him.
Naruto still wasn’t sure what to call them after all these months, zombies seemed to be too ridiculous a word, but it was fitting. He had simply referred to them as Undead while he had heard others refer to them as Walkers. He didn’t like that word, walkers, it implied that they were human and were conscious of what they were doing.
But he knew one thing, from the experience with his mother, the virus was already active within every person on earth, biting and scratching from an Undead was a guarantee that the virus would spread faster than dying naturally. Only headshot counted for something when going up against one, if you were caught in a horde, you were fucked.
Naruto pulled away from the ledge before he could be spotted, he had to jump the five foot between the buildings. It wouldn’t matter if they had noticed him, all the buildings were locked up and even if they could get in, there were stairwells that had to be navigated. Hoisting his bow to his back, Naruto took a deep breath and started to run, jumping and pushing off the ledge only to land on the other building. His movement had caused a few pebbles to shift, but none fell over the edge.
A relieved sigh escaped his lips as he walked to other side of the building. The heat was beating down on him and he suddenly wished he had brought a cap. It would have helped to keep the sun out of his eyes, but there was nothing that could be done now. He would just have to remember that detail for his next run.
The next was clear of Undead and he was grateful. This jump to the hospital was further apart and he always feared that one day he couldn’t make it and would fall to his death. Naruto always thought that if did happen to fall that he would make sure his head would hit the pavement first, a morbid thought, but if it kept him from coming back as one of those things, then it would be worth it to rot in the sun.
Gathering his wits, he once again started off at a run and jumped, this time barely making it to the other side. He was able to pull himself up to the roof and Naruto fell to his back, his supplies digging into his back uncomfortably. Naruto sat up and pulled the list from his pocket, the items listed were things he could find in the pharmacy and he thanked his lucky stars that Itachi hadn’t added clothes or food to the list. Those were the tougher items to procure in the city and there was more danger involved.
After catching his breath, Naruto stood. The entrance to the hospital was padlocked, something he had done to prevent others from entering unless they wanted to use force. The chain and lock were still intact and there were no markings, meaning that no one had tried to force their way in lately. He had learned the hard way that if something wasn’t blocked off, then others would take whatever they wanted, regardless if they were needed or not.
Of course, medicine was a valuable bargaining chip he believed. It was probably one of the rarest supplies out there besides canned goods. Naruto slipped the key from his pocket and quickly opened the lock, gliding inside quickly. Once inside, he barred the door and pulled his bow off his back.
An arrow was notched and he was ready as he snuck down the stairs. His eyes and ears were opened as he searched for signs of danger. Of course sometimes you could smell the undead before you heard them and Naruto relied on his nose most of the time.
It seemed as though the generator had finally ran out. Naruto knew that the generator had been running on his last run here, he had a made a quick check up. He had almost swiped it for himself, but it was too large for one person to move and he didn’t want to drag Kurama or Itachi into the city. They were ill suited for this type of work and weren’t trained well enough to slip in and out.
The had asked him of course, but Naruto refused. One person was enough to slip in and out of the city, they wouldn’t draw too much attention and could go easily unnoticed. It was the safest way to complete a run and Naruto argued that point for hours.
The stairwell was clear, much to his surprise as he entered the hall. The lights were gone and he had to be extra careful since some of the rooms weren’t open and sunlight wasn’t available. As he carefully dodged the debris on the floor, Naruto noticed that it was oddly silent. Normally if there were Undead, there would be some sort of shuffling noise or groaning. But neither were present. Perhaps they had been locked up on a lower level?
As he passed one of the rooms, he could hear someone muttering from inside. Surprised at the coherent words, he lowered his bow and pressed his ear to the door, sure enough there was a human being inside. Naruto was at war with himself, he didn’t know how long the person, male from the sound of it, had been locked up. He couldn’t decipher if they were sane or just crazy.
Taking a chance, he wheeled the gurney away from the door gently, careful not to make any noise. He opened the door with caution and slipped inside, closing and locking it behind him. If there were undead in the hospital, he didn’t want to alert them.
The man before him was pale, evidence that he hadn’t been outside in a long time. His hair was greasy and body unwashed, his frame thin and wispy. Naruto decided to clear his throat and get the other’s attention.
He whirled around, pinning Naruto with familiar dark eyes and a scowl. The man tried to step forward, but lost his footing and fell, he was caught before he connected with the floor. Naruto held him up and placed in the dusty chair. It wouldn’t hurt him anyway, the man was already dirty and unkempt.
“Who are you?” The voice was dry and raspy with disuse, Naruto could barely understand him.
“I’m Naruto,” he answered softly, voices could carry in an empty hospital and attract unwanted attention. “You have to keep your voice down, we’re in a lot of danger.”
“What is this? Scare Tactics? Did Suigetsu put you up to this?” The questions fell from chapped in rapid succession, the man not heeding his warning.
Naruto placed a hand over the mouth and watched as the eyes narrowed further in anger. “Listen, pal, I don’t know what your story is, but this place could be crawling with Undead and we would be an excellent meal. We’re on the top floor and the only way out is that door.” Naruto’s head nodded to the escape route.
“This isn’t some silly T.V. show, no matter how much I wish it was true, but if you want outta here alive, you’re gonna have to listen to me,” Naruto’s voice left no room for argument and the man must have sensed his sincerity when he nodded. “I have to get some supplies from the pharmacy. If the signs are correct, it’s just down the hall. I need you to stay and stay quiet, I’ll come back for you once I’ve gotten what I’ve need. Are you strong enough to walk?”
Naruto lifted his hand away from the mouth so the man could speak. “Yeah, I woke up two days ago and couldn’t get out of my room no matter what I did.”
“How much noise did you make?” Naruto asked, eyes narrowing as he assessed the situation.
“A lot, but no one came, why?” The tone was curious as the dark head tilted curiously.
“Because they’re dead, or they can’t make their way to you,” Naruto answered darkly as he stood. “You should be glad about that. Stay put and don’t make a sound, I shouldn’t be long.”
Naruto left the room, placing the gurney back in front of the door. It was obvious that the man had survived because of that.Naruto couldn’t determine if it was intentional or just pure dumb luck. Whatever the case, the man was lucky and should thank his stars for the intervention.
The hallway was long, but the mind had a funny way of playing tricks on you. And if the man had been making as much as noise as he claimed, and no Undead showed up, that meant they were locked or they had left the hospital in search of flesh. No matter what the situation was, it was better for Naruto. The less he came into contact with the once humans, the better his sanity would survive.
The pharmacy came into view and the area was quickly scanned for any sign of a threat. None was found and Naruto silently approached the pharmacy. He looked down over the counter and there was a poor soul who had been turned, but they were so bad deteriorated that they couldn’t move.
Naruto couldn’t determine if the being had once been male or female, the body was in such a bad way. He quickly put an arrow into the head and climbed his way in, missing the body and pulling his arrow back out with a sickening crunch. He couldn’t waste them, they were badly needed for other things such as hunting. Naruto found out that if the arrows used were sanitized with hot water and alcohol, the virus wouldn’t spread into killed game.
It was something he was thankful for since arrows were hard to come by nowadays. Naruto had already raided all the sporting stores taking everything he could carry. The early runs were what dwindled his supplies, leaving the arrows stuck in a head of an Undead was wasteful and he wished he hadn’t left them. The bow was set down, leaning against his leg for quick access if he needed it.
He squinted at the list, his mind senses still searching for any threat that may arise. Naruto quickly began to grab everything that was on the shelf and placed it in his backpack. He would clear out the shelves just so no one else would have access to what was available. It was a greedy thing to do, but it was also the right thing. Naruto couldn’t bear to think what people would use to bargain for medicine.
His task took several minutes, the shelves were surprisingly full, meaning that no one thought to grab the necessities as they ran out in a panic. Naruto placed the last bottle in his backpack and hoisted the heavy bag to his back, picking his bow up before he started to leave. It would be harder now to jump with the added weight, but he would deal with it.
As he passed the poor soul in front of the counter, he said a quick prayer for the person. He didn’t know who they had been, or what they were liked, but it was a damned shame what happened to them.
The hallway was still clear, but the trip felt faster somehow even though he was laden with medication. Scanning it one last, Naruto moved the gurney and made his way inside the room again, taking all the precautions he had before.
“We need to get to the rooftop and make our way back. We don’t want to be stuck here after sundown,” Naruto explained as started to go through the closet for something suitable for the other man.
“If you’re looking for clothes, you’re fucked, the only thing in there are a pair of shoes,” the man snorted.
“Good, that’s all you’ll need. We need to hit the woods by sunset, they get restless and more active after dark when it cools down,” Naruto explained as he threw the shoes to the man. “The jump between buildings isn’t that bad, you should be able to make it.”
“You’re serious about this?” Dark eyes widened as he took in the grave look on the blond man’s face. If he had any doubts about the truth, they were erased by that one look.
“Damn serious, I was military when the shit went down. I can explain later when we’re not rushing for time. Get those shoes on!” Naruto barked and watched as his order was carried out. Hopefully he was doing the right thing by rescuing this man and taking him home.
Naruto took the lead as he poked his head out of the door, the hallway was still clear and he stopped questioning his luck. He motioned for the other man to follow him and told him to keep up. The trip to the roof was uneventful and he savored that fact. A lot of things could have gone wrong in the hour he was within the hospital.
Once they were outside, Naruto once again locked up the hospital. He had no reason to go in anymore, but there was no telling if the Undead would get on the roof and he needed it to jump from building to building. Looking at the other man he could tell that he was a bit overwhelmed. Sighing, Naruto led him to the ledge and the alley was still clear. There were no Undead in the vicinity and he was sure that they could risk going down the fire escape and crossing that way. But his mind wouldn’t let go that route, it was still dangerous, just because he couldn’t see one didn’t mean it wasn’t there.
“Do you think you can jump that?” Naruto asked, turning his head to assess the man beside him.
A smirk stretched the chapped lips. “I was state champion for the high jump in high school and went to nationals in college. Even though my body isn’t up to par, I could make this in my sleep.”
“I’ll go first then, just in case,” Naruto answered as he back away and started to sprint. The weight on his back kept him from getting a decent height and he narrowly missed the ledge, he struggled to hoist himself up over the last few inches to get to safety.
Once he was safely on the roof, he gave the man the heads up and cleared a spot for him. Naruto watched in amazement as the jump was cleared with ease. It shouldn’t have been possible with the way the man’s was with no nutrition for however long he was in hospital.
“That was, yeah. Come one, the next one should be easy,” Naruto muttered as they quickly crossed the roof. The need to get to the woods was urgent as he guessed they had maybe two hours of daylight left before the cool night air would hit and the Undead would stir more.
The Undead had multiplied in the alley below them. A string of curses filled his ears, though they were low, apparently his warnings had been heeded. This was the proof the other man needed to believe him. Naruto sighed as he pulled away from the ledge.
“You weren’t kidding,” the response was whispered, almost as if he were afraid that the beings below them would hear.
“No, I wasn’t. I was part of the initial response team even though I performed mainly recon missions. The cities were the first to fall since the higher ranking officials thought that gathering everyone in one place was a brilliant idea. But, more about that later, we just need to cross this building and get on the highway, from there it’s easy sailing, provided that there are no Roamers,” Naruto explained, before once again jumping, followed by the other man.
By the time they had reached the forest, the sun was setting low in the sky. Naruto found the treehouse he had built for such an occasion and let the other man climb up first. He was dumbfounded that he hadn’t asked for a name yet. But in that kind of situation, sometimes it was best to not know a name.
They settled in for the night, Naruto knew that they would move slowly now since he had another person with him. It didn’t bother him, but Itachi would worry, as well as Kurama if his fever broke. Naruto hated to worry them, but they would understand once he returned. It wouldn’t hurt to have an extra body around the cabin to help prepare for winter. Naruto took a perch at the window and kept watch. He could go days without sleep if needed, but hated the thought of it. He didn’t like to crash for the next few days, preferring to be awake and enjoying what he had.
“You said you were part of the initial response team, what happened?” The question was asked softly, the thin body was propped against the wall beside Naruto.
“It was a virus, we had no idea where it had come from,” Naruto began as he lost himself in the memory. “We had just gotten back from a mission in Moscow and barely stepped out of the airport when we were told to report to Washington.
“They were running around like chickens. The CDC had already been called, but when I saw the footage, I couldn’t believe it. I had to watch it several times. It was this little girl, her hair was bloody and she...she was eating another person. I didn’t...I lost my lunch because she was so adorable and here she was tearing another human apart. But that wasn’t the only case, they were popping up all over the country. They were already evacuating people to the cities, the cause of the madness, as they called it, wasn’t determined yet and here they were piling people up in the city.”
Naruto stopped and took a deep breath, he hadn’t told this story in a few months, not since he had leveled with Itachi when the older man had pursued him. He didn’t want to relive the past, to have those faces flash before his eyes again.
“We went to the hospitals first, I didn’t want to, but an order is an order,” Naruto said sadly, his eyes searching the darkness stretched out before him. “We had orders to just shoot anyone who was dying. We were told that this would stop outbreak, I couldn’t do it...I told my officer to fuck off and went straight for my mother’s house after that. I had a radio that I listened and every day things kept getting worse. My brother and I, Kurama, started to gather supplies and stocked our cabin up. Our father used to take us hunting there when we were children. Of course it’s a little posh, but he liked things that way.”
“How long did it take for the world to go to utter shit?”
“A few weeks to a month, we had a calendar, but after this year, it’ll be kinda hard to keep up with the months. But we’re ready for winter and I have a smokehouse set up, though I have to be careful, people have lost their sanity.” Naruto answered, a deer catching his eye. He would have shot it if Itachi or Kurama had been with him, but he let the animal go. “Say, I never your name, what is it?”
“It’s Sasuke, I didn’t want to give it to you before, trust issues and all that,” was the grunted reply.
Naruto chuckled. “I hear you there, we’ve met other survivors and some of the things I’ve heard, we’re better off on our own.”
“The world is lost then?” Sasuke asked as his head hit the wall, eyes staring at the ceiling.
“As long as people keep dying, yes. The virus reanimates the brain, it does something to it that no one has ever seen before. The CDC was so perplexed that they couldn’t figure it out. We’re all infected, we become them when we die as long as the brain isn’t damaged,” Naruto shared, his tone haunted as he thought about the past and the crazy things he had seen. “Get some sleep, you’re going to need it. We should make it back home tomorrow. There’s a shower there with hot water and I’ll gladly let you use it.”
“Hn, thanks, moron. But I don’t think I can sleep, not when I want to know about my brother,” Sasuke said, his head turning to Naruto.
Naruto frowned, he should have known that Sasuke would asked about his family sooner or later. Everyone always did as they expected him to know since he had been in the military before it fell. He didn’t know how to tell Sasuke he had no clue, not when he didn’t have a name to go off of.
“I don’t know what to tell you, Sasuke. It’s hard to track family members out here, I don’t have a computer to work from to track anyone. You’re lucky if someone is broadcasting from a radio station.” Naruto answered, one hand moving to pat the man on the shoulder.
“It’s fine, I can see him surviving and not giving up,” Sasuke said fondly, a hand covering Naruto’s.
Morning came all too soon and they moved out at first light. It was still cool in the forest, so the roamers would still be more active, but Naruto knew what he was doing and Sasuke was surprisingly keeping up with him. It was mostly adrenaline that was keeping the other man going, and Naruto knew it wouldn’t last much longer, that Sasuke would crash as soon as they reached the cabin.
They were silent as they moved swiftly, careful not to attract any attention to themselves. Naruto had explained that sometimes the living was something to be scared and cautious of as well. That you couldn’t exactly trust anyone. Sasuke had given a look and asked Naruto if he was just playing him.
The laugh that followed couldn’t be helped. Naruto had retorted that if he had wanted to eat Sasuke, he would have done it already. But as they went deeper into the woods, the more serious their demeanor became. One wrong move and they would be done for if there any enemies in the vicinity.
The hours waned on and they had to stop to eat, energy was needed to keep on going if they wanted to get to the cabin by sunset. Naruto didn’t have another house set up, at least not this deep. It would alert the living that there was a safe place nearby and they would lose what they fought hard for. The dew was vaporized off the leaves and trees, the heat already hitting as the sun hit noon. They had covered quite a bit of ground in the few hours that they had been traveling. Naruto relaxed with the thought that they would make it to the cabin without incident.
And he was right, the sun was setting just as they made it back. Itachi was sitting on the porch, a gun laid over his lap as he searched the area for intruders, his eyes widened as they found the two men.
Naruto’s lips spread into a grin as they approached the cabin, Itachi dropped the gun and started forward. He dropped his bow and supplies and held his arms out for his lover, but Naruto was passed by. Confused, he turned around and saw Itachi embrace Sasuke, tears flowing between the two men as they fell to the ground holding each other, their foreheads touching.
Naruto was shocked, they were brothers. He was confused on how he didn’t see it before, the fact that they were brothers helped brush off the hurt a little though. Itachi had never ignored him when he returned from a run, even before they were lovers, the older man looked out for him.
“Heh, how about that,” a deep voice came from the doorway, Naruto turned to the door to find his brother awake and standing on his own.
“Kurama! You’re awake!” Naruto exclaimed as he scrambled to the porch and embraced his brother. “Are you feeling better?”
“Yeah, the fever broke yesterday while you were gone. I’m still a bit under the weather, but it’ll pass. What did you bring back?”
“A whole bunch of things, Itachi will explain what they are once he’s done,” Naruto answered, turning his gaze to the brothers.
“You’re...alive how?” Itachi asked, cupping his younger brother’s face, thumb stroking a smooth cheek.
“I...I don’t know. I woke up the day before yesterday. I couldn’t get out, so I sat there...wondering what the hell was going on. Then that moron showed up and I thought for sure it was Scare Tactics or some shit,” Sasuke said as he hugged his brother again, relishing in the strength they provided.
“I’m guessing you were blaming Suigetsu?” Itachi asked, chuckling kissing the dark locks tenderly.
“Heh, yeah I was. So tell me, you really hooked up with Naruto? I thought blonds aren't your type?” Sasuke teased as they separated, a smirk dancing on his lips as he watched his brother grip for words.
“Hmm, well people change, and speaking of change, you need a bath.” Itachi said after a few moments, wrinkling his nose at the smell.
“Naruto said there was a hot shower!” Sasuke perked up, he couldn’t think of his friends now. His brother was alive and that was all that mattered. And a warm hot shower would definitely be welcomed to get the dirt and grime off his skin. He wanted to feel clean again, knowing that he would never a shower for granted ever again.
“Yes, if I know him, he said you could have all the hot water,” Itachi guessed, smiling as he led Sasuke to the cabin, his hand never leaving the thin back.
“Yeah,” Sasuke said lamely as he was helped up the porch. His strength was leaving him now, the adrenaline waning from his veins.
“I’ll give you a check up after your shower. Naruto was able to replace most of my supplies.” Itachi smiled at Naruto, pulling the man to him as Kurama steadied Sasuke. He kissed the sun kissed locks gently, no words were necessary, Naruto understood the gesture. Itachi was thanking for something that happened by pure coincidence.
“I don’t need your thanks, Itachi,” Naruto mumbled shyly, eyes darting to the porch floor, uncomfortable with the gesture.
“You do, love. You brought someone back to me that I that I had lost forever. You may not think that you need to be thanked, but I do. You could have left him in the hospital, but you didn’t. You have one of the purest hearts, Naruto.”
Naruto snorted and butted his head against Itachi’s chin affectionately. “Don’t get sappy on me, babe. It doesn’t suit you.”
“At least you keep me grounded,” Itachi snipped back as they entered the cabin, Kurama leading Sasuke to the shower while Naruto handed Itachi the backpack of supplies.
“You cleared out the pharmacy, didn’t you?” The doctor asked as he laid the various bottles and tubes out on the kitchen table.
“Yeah, I didn’t feel right leavin’ it all there. There was an Undead, but it couldn’t move. It looks like they deteriorate after all, but the fact remains that we still become those things,” Naruto shivered as he rubbed his arms in comfort.
“We already have plans in place,” Itachi reassured Naruto, a hand reaching out to rest on the others forearm. “Sasuke may not like them, but rest assured the orders will be carried out. I don’t want to become of them either.”
“It’s just...after Mom, I don’t know,” Naruto’s blue eyes were pained as he looked into dark ones.
Itachi squeezed the warm arm and sighed, he knew of the nightmare that plagued Naruto at night, he was the one who chased them away. “It won’t be easy, but if it ever comes to that. I’m counting on you to shoot me.”
“And I do as well,” Naruto whispered as he leaned in and kissed Itachi deeply. Their lives were lived day to day and anything could happen. A deranged group of survivors could pass by one day and take what they wanted by force, a horde could walk by and they would have no choice but to shoot themselves. The possibilities were endless and Naruto didn’t want to dwell on them, he wanted to stay in the here and now, live what time he had left with his lover and brother and Sasuke.
“We’ll be fine, we’ve only had a handful of people pass by here. I would be more concerned if we didn’t have anyone at all.” The answer was wise and soothed Naruto.
“I wanted to have a partner, kids, the white house with the fence after I retired,” Naruto whispered, scooting his chair closer to Itachi and resting his head on the strong shoulder. “But now, it seems like that’s impossible. I have the partner and the house, but not the kids.”
A strong arm wrapped around Naruto’s shoulders. “One day, love, we will have kids. Maybe we’ll be lucky and find one somewhere or maybe they will come to us. But don’t give up hope.”
“I’ll try, babe, I’ll try. How’s it feel to have your brother back?” Naruto whispered, his breath tickling Itachi’s neck.
“I...I’m not sure if I believe it yet. I finally came to terms that he might have been or one of them.” Itachi closed his eyes and rested his head on Naruto’s. They would have to help Sasuke adjust to this new world he had awakened in, but Sasuke was adaptable. In this little place they had made for themselves, they would fight to survive with everything they had because this was as close to perfect as they could get in this world.
