New story for everyone, not something I would normally write but the muse struck me. It’s a little strange but I enjoyed writing it and I hope you enjoy reading it. Thanks to Emma for the awesome beta and the feedback. *** It often amazed Naruto how gold and the dollar still remained the highest form of economic trade even after the fall of the known world. You couldn’t eat money, it couldn’t keep you warm and it most certainly couldn’t defend you against the starving, bio chemical accidents that roamed the wastelands outside of the few small habitable areas that were left in an area that used to be known as Australia. Maybe it was the fact that gold used to be what they traded in, that it reminded the people who had it of a better time where they weren’t constantly worrying about stability of the very earth they stood on or the fate of man itself. Or maybe it was the fact that the people who had the gold were to shit scared to leave the boarders of the town ship, were too scared to leave the walls and look for something that was actually useful, like fresh water or a better way to harness energy than what had gotten them into this mess in the first place. Naruto didn’t know much about it, he hadn’t been alive to see it, but he was one of the few who could read and had managed to gain enough knowledge from books and old newspapers to get him by. What he knew was that nuclear energy and hydroelectricity hadn’t been the solution the world’s energy consumption problems like everyone had though them to be, that the civilised world had ended because people had ignored the problems that trying to fix their current problem had caused. At first it had started with the nuclear reactor in Tokyo. The reactor had been damaged by a large earthquake the area and despite what experts said to try and reassure the population, had indeed leaked some dangerous chemicals into the air. No one noticed really, until almost thirty years later people born during the time of the accident started showing up in hospitals around the country with strange diseases that were altering the very makeup of their DNA, changing it into something that no one had ever seen before. Quarantine had been the answer then when even the new super advanced medical knowledge of the time couldn’t explain it and it had worked for a while until an incident in Ireland annihilated any chance the world had of returning to normality. Under the lax eyes of their government certain companies had been working on free energy schemes, one of which had been hydroelectricity. They had planned to harness the power of the waves that beat upon their countries coastline daily, an untapped well of power as they would later call it in the last few newspapers to ever be printed, in which the companies tried one last time to defend their actions. So excited had they been about the possibilities of hydroelectricity that the companies had went on to do what they determined to be small scale tests. So excited had they been that they ignored the problems their solution would cause. Lack of planning and proper research had led to their accident. The first hydroelectric system they ever built unknowingly tapped into a large underground lake that wound from the sea to the very heart of the county. Without proper planning the hydroelectric system had failed when it was operating at full power, the resulting failure causing the system to spew water from its full turbines back into the underground lake with such force that it caused cracks in the earth’s surface, resulting in an earthquake greater than that which had hit Tokyo. The earth quake had been so great that it had caused the already weakened and eroded land to split dramatically, resulting in large chunks of the coastline breaking off and falling into the sea, creating even more earthquakes. Needless to say Irelands own nuclear power plants had not been able to withstand the impact, nor were they built do deal with the earth shifting below them. The same gas as that which had escaped at Tokyo was again released into the atmosphere but in much larger degrees. It was a little over a three months before half the population was under quarantine or admitted to hospitals, and only a month later that hospitals as well as aid stations set up by other countries were closed down and Ireland was left to fend for themselves. The nuclear gases spread through the atmosphere and infected many more and as the population dwindled there had been no one to run the nuclear power plants or hydroelectric stations. More failures occurred until country by country the world was thrown into disaster. Even countries that didn’t operate on nuclear power had been affected. The reason: The United States Of America. The USA was globally central and the country had 105 operating nuclear power stations with more planned. They also had a number of hydroelectric stations that had failed when there was no one left to operate them or manage their erosion rates. These days there was nothing left of the USA. The USA had been the worlds Chernobyl. The governments and military that were left had been quick to take control after that, setting up colonies in the areas that were the least affected and eventually survivors had started to trickle in and the human race began again, foraging what they could from the old world to make their new one and now, almost a hundred years later many of the colonies were thriving, particularly those in Australia where the radioactive damage from the USA had been minimal. But that didn’t mean they were any safer from disasters that would bring about the new world. Before the fall of the world Australia had been a big believer in renewable power, particularly hydroelectricity. There were stations built all over the country, both on the coast and inland and when no one had been there to run them and manage the erosion and flooding they created, much of Australia was destroyed and many lake and river systems failed both above ground and under it. The land they lived on now was constantly shifting. New lakes showed up all the time and old ones ran dry. Floods were constantly damaging crops on the low ground where as crops on the high ground were always in danger of being crushed my falling rocks that were shaken loose by constant tremors. It could have been worse though, they could have been somewhere in the north of the world, fighting off what was left of the mutated. But with new world order came the reestablishment of classes. There were the well off, people with more crops and money than they knew what to do with. There were the middle class, the people that worked to keep the well off as they were and received the leftovers as payment and then there was him and all those like him, the slaves. I never used to be like this; Naruto thought bitterly to himself, this is what the colony has made me. After all it was the colonies that had put him where he was today, on a stage, about to be sold as a slave or worse to the highest bidder. He and his family used to be part of the middle class, he had gone to work obediently every day to provide for the colony of those around him. It disgusted him that after all the hard work the generations of his family had put in that, when he was the last one left, this was how they were repaid. “And next up we have this beautiful if somewhat dirty young man here,” the slave owner called as he stepped up beside Naruto, attracting the attention of half the audience at the slave house, “just like all our other wares he’s been given a complete medical and is in top physical condition, I checked him over thoroughly myself.” Naruto shuddered as the filthy man gave the crowd a lusty wink before groping him roughly to the amused laughter of the crowd. Naruto growled and spat on the man before his arm was twisted roughly by the man holding him from behind to get him to behave and he felt a spark of satisfaction ignite in his chest as the crowd laughed at the slave owner who was now wiping his face clean. The slave owner stepped in front of Naruto to block the crowds view of him and brushed a lock of his dirty blonde hair behind his ear and Naruto tried not to flinch at his touch, “I may not be able to lay a finger on you up here boy, no one wants to buy damaged wares but you had better hope someone buys you today,” the man threatened in a hiss, “if not you and I will be having some more fun tonight and I won’t be as gentle as last time.” Naruto felt as if he was going to be sick as he watched the man’s strange yellow eyes sparkle at the memory of the last night they had shared together. It had been two night ago but the blonde body still cried in pain when he moved wrong and it was impossible for him to sit down or bend over. Turning back to the crowd with a grin on his face as if nothing had happened the slave owner continued, “He’ll be available for supervised inspections to make sure no one tries to get a free sample of him. Those of you who are interested in an inspection know what to do, those of you who don’t have no business being here.” And just like that Naruto was dragged from the stage, his two minutes of unwanted fame over. Managing to get one last glimpse at the crowd the blonde saw a large number of people moving toward the stage front to organise an inspection and he sighed. He couldn’t decide what was worse, being a slave to a stranger or being a play thing for the slave owner. *** The hunter scowled as he pushed his way through the crowded slave house. He hated crowds of any size and tried to avoid them at all cost. All he had wanted to do was come into the colony’s business district, pick out a slave with enough sense to keep their mouth shut and do as they were told and then go back to his family’s home up in the mountains. What he wanted though was not what was happening. Not only had the slaves that had been shown today not to his liking but he had been recognised constantly despite his lack of social interaction with anyone in the colony other than his family, and the very select few that he deemed suitable enough to be called his friends. Just as the hunter was about to give up and leave the crowded slave house and go and do something productive, one last slave was dragged pout onto the stage. The hunter watched with interest as the dirty young man stood with his head held high despite the fact that he was being sold off like cattle and his interest peaked even further when the blonde spat in Orochimaru’s face, a man who all other slaves and many other free colonists were petrified off. The slave had spirit and although that had not been what the hunter had been looking for when he had decided to purchase a slave he now thought that maybe it would be worth while taking a closer at this particular one. After all it would be nice to have a slave that could hold his own, that way maybe he would last longer than the last one that he had, had. Besides he’d come all this way and dealt with the throngs of people littering the business district so he might as well go one step further and see if he could get something out of it. Pushing his way through the crowd at the front of the stage the hunter went straight to the start of the line of people waiting for their turn to inspect the slave of their choice , knowing that no one would dare to try and stop him. “I want to view the blonde slave that was just shown,” the hunter demanded of the massive man who was guarding the door to the back stage area. The guard grunted, “you and everyone else,” the guard looked down at the smaller man and his eyes went wide when he when he saw the hunter properly for the first time before he quickly left his post and went backstage, emerging a few moments later with the slave owner Orochimaru close behind. “It’s wonderful to see you Sasuke, to what do I owe this pleasurable visit?” Sasuke's hand twitched toward his sword that was strapped to his back as the man’s eyes racked over his body in a less than modest fashion. “I want to view the blonde slave you just presented, now, if you don’t mind,” Sasuke narrowed his eyes at Orochimaru, trying to make the other man back off and see that he was only there to do business, just like always. “Hmm well I can’t just let you cut in front of all these nice men now can I,” Orochimaru smirked, “you could come backstage though if you’d like to waste some time before your turn. I’d be more than happy to keep you company while you wait.” “Or I could go home and demand that my father come down here and collect the payments that you owe him from the last two hunts we did for you,” Sasuke smirked as the sickly pale man got whiter. He never liked using his father as a threat, but he was frustrated and wanted to get this over with. He wanted to get what he wanted, and what he wanted was to see the blonde slave right now. “Oh well if that’s the case than I guess I can work something out,” Orochimaru stepped aside so Sasuke could enter the backstage area before leading him down a corridor after the guard closed the door behind them with an ominous creak. The raven knew that he could destroy Orochimaru if the man tried anything but being alone with him still made him break out in a cold sweat, the man was just so creepy. Keeping his guard up Sasuke followed a few steps behind Orochimaru as he waved through the many corridors that made up the back of the slave house. The stage and bar area only took up a little of the establishment. Most of the slave house was made up of small rooms and holding cells backstage for the numerous slaves that were bought and sold daily. There were also store rooms and the living quarters for the people that worked at the slave house, as well as Orochimaru’s own rooms which the raven had had the displeasure of seeing once or twice, when the man needed to talk with his father to request the aid of a hunter. In staying so far behind Orochimaru, Sasuke risked getting lost in the vast network that was the back of the slave house but he would rather getting lost an running into all types of unmentionable people than walk any closer to the man that kept them. “here we are Sasuke, just let me deal with the man currently viewing the blonde, then he’s all yours,” Orochimaru quickly ducked into a room and Sasuke waited patiently as a few muffled shouts were heard and then a middle aged man was thrown into the hall where he was waiting, blood trailing from his broken nose. “I tried to ask you to leave politely,” Orochimaru stated as he stepped out of the room brushing invisible dust off of his winkled and already very dirty purple suit with the guard who had been in the room following close behind. Orochimaru wasn’t a man to get his hands dirty, he preferred to let his subordinates do the work for him. So if the man currently sitting in the hall holding his gushing nose tried anything Sasuke was sure that the slave owner would simply step out of the way and let the guard take care of it. “Now I’d like it if you left, I have others who wish to view this merchandise and could quite frankly bid you under the table,” Orochimaru smiled as the man scowled, realising that his patronage was basically unneeded and that Orochimaru could treat him however the hell he wanted as long as he had other, more wealthy clients. Choosing to continue his fight another day the man got up and made a hasty retreat, leaving with the minor injuries he had, injuries that could be healed quickly. Orochimaru had a habit of doing specific damage to those that he felt wronged him, damage that couldn’t be healed without the loss of a limb or two. Once the man had left Orochimaru stepped passed Sasuke, “he’s all yours my dear Uchiha, take as long as you like with him,” Sasuke stepped back out of the man’s reach as he moved to touch him and Orochimaru pouted at being denied. Sasuke glared at Orochimaru’s back as the man walked away in a huff, not wanting to turn his back and being at risk of the other man jumping him from behind. Once the slave owner was out of sight Sasuke walked up to the man and slipped a few pieces of gold into his hand, “go find something useful to do somewhere else for a few minutes.” Taking the money the man deserted his post without a second thought to what the raven could do to the blonde slave while he was gone or what Orochimaru would do to him if he found out that he had left the blonde alone Walking into the room quietly Sasuke shut the door behind him so he could talk with the slave somewhat privately. Looking around the room Sasuke saw the blonde slave standing in the far corner or the room, looking at the floor as he scuffed his foot along it, trying to dig a hole in the years of compacted dirt and grime. Naruto knew when the other man came into the room but he didn’t dare look up. He had heard the other man give the guard a bribe to leave them alone together and that could only mean one thing. Two options were waring in his mind now, he could let the man have his way with him and try to make this be as quick and painless as possible or he could fight and risk getting hurt even more. “Are you this rude to all of your potential buyers?” A deep voice questioned and Naruto’s stomach turned as he imagined the type of man that might belong to such a voice, “Raise your head and look at me.” Swallowing the lump in his throat the blonde looked up from the floor and the lump immediately returned. Standing before him was a man, maybe only a little older that him wearing a brown leather coat that scraped across ground as he moved and had a large hood attached to it that fell into his eyes. His pants were black with more pockets than the blonde could count and his shirt was white, even if it was dirtied by the hustle and bustle of whatever kind of day he had, had. Naruto began to worry when his eyes fell upon the sword strapped to the man’s back and the guns resting at his hips. Narrowing his eyes as said weapons Naruto was suddenly confused. The weapons were like no other gun he had seen before and try as he might Naruto could see no other ammunition about the man’s person. Noticing where the blonde gaze had strayed to sake moved his jacket to conceal his weapon, “don’t think about trying anything funny, you’d die before you got the chance to do anything. Under normal circumstances Naruto would have come up with some smartarse comment to that throw back at the man but he knew just what thin ice he was walking on. Removing his eyes from the now concealed weapons Naruto looked up to finally see the others face and felt another frown cross his features. Whoever this man was he was wearing what looked to be a black modified gas mask that covered only the bottom of his face and the entirety of his neck before it disappeared beneath the high collar of his white shirt. It was a strange combination and as far as Naruto knew there hadn’t been any outbreaks of contamination to warrant wearing the mask. He also wore some type of reflective glasses that hid his eyes. These Naruto had seen before, most of the people that went outside the colonies high walls wore them to protect themselves from the glaring sun that in Naruto’s opinion wasn’t all that bad. “What’s your name?” the man asked and Naruto realised his voice sounded so creepy because of the mask. It was a small relief but that didn’t make him drop his guard. Creepy voice or not his intentions were still most likely horrible, since he needed them to be alone together to make them come to pass. “Naruto,” the blonde answered meekly, he didn’t bother giving his last name, knowing that the other man wouldn’t really care what it was. It was even strange that the man was asking for his first name, most slaves that he knew were renamed by their owners. The hooded man hummed to himself for a moment as if thinking, “That’s an acceptable name, and I hate having to rename slaves. So do you have any family here that would miss you should you leave or should something happen to you?” “Why the hell does that matter,” Naruto growled at the man’s intrusive question. “Just answer the question,” the other stepped forward and Naruto forgot that he was already against the wall and tried to step back, causing the man to chuckle darkly, “you don’t have to be afraid of me, just answer my questions and we won’t have a problem. However if you’d like to continue being difficult I could always go and get Orochimaru and let him question you for me.” “I…I don’t have any family at all,” Naruto said a little too quickly at the thought of being questioned by Orochimaru. This man may be scary but the slave owner was far worse in his eyes, “my father was a scout as well as a collector. He died on a trip and rather than be sold as a slave when we could no longer fend without him, my mother killed herself,” Naruto explained quietly. He didn’t like relieving the memories of being told his father had died or coming home from the field to find that his mother had bled out on the dirty kitchen floor from two long gashes she had made up her forearms. They were horrible memories and relieving even a little of them to a stranger who didn’t even care hurt all the more. “So she left you to fend for yourself rather than have the courage to take you with her,” the man scoffed, “looks like what’s left of the gods smile on me.” “Shut the hell up you bastard. You didn’t know my mother, she couldn’t have hurt a fly!” Naruto was livid. That this man could speak so cruelly of his mother without even knowing her pissed him off to no end, “my mother loved my father, he was her everything. If I had a love like that and I lost them I would do that same as she did!” “Are you like this with all your buyers?” the sudden question from the annoyingly calm man threw the blonde off his train of anger, “I have to admit that it’s a pretty smart strategy. Being rude and violent to make sure no one takes an interest in you.” “B-but I haven’t had any buyer,” Naruto corrected a little confused before the other could make any more assumptions about him, “this was my first time on stage.” Naruto couldn’t tell how the man reacted to that, the mask and the glasses he wore covered anything that would have given his emotions away, “Naruto I only have one more question for you but first I need you to do something for me.” The blonde narrowed his eyes at the stranger, thinking he knew what the man expected him to do but he asked none the less, “and what would that be?” “I want you to sit down for me,” Sasuke watched as Naruto’s eyes widened at the request, clearly that had not been what he had been expecting to be asked, another thing that went to confirming the ravens suspicions of why this slave was so scared of that creep Orochimaru. Naruto bit his lip and tried to pretend like the strangers request didn’t worry him. He couldn’t even stand without any pain and he didn’t even want imagine what sitting down would feel like at the moment. Looking toward the man Naruto found that he was waiting patiently, he wasn’t demanding that his request be met like he had done when he had refused to answer questions, “how did you know what he did to me?” “I saw it in your eyes when I mentioned his name, the fear was instant,” Sasuke answered without playing any games, he was impressed that the blonde had figured out the meaning to his request so quickly, “and he might have tried to clean up the evidence but there is still blood on your pants at your inner thigh. There are only a few ways that it could have gotten there.” “So what’s your question?” Naruto asked darkly, trying to change the subject from the shame that he had endured. “How long ago did your parents die?” “My father died two weeks ago and my mother killed herself six days after that,” Naruto answered meekly. He was getting to the point where he wished that man had have just raped him instead of asking him all the questions and making him relive the horrifying events of the last two weeks of his life. He wished the stranger would just kill him. Sasuke sighed heavily, this slave was far more damaged than he had thought. He could never purchase the other teen now, but what he could do was try and make sure Orochimaru treated him a little better until he was sold. Turning on his heal Sasuke smirked as he almost felt the tension drain out of the blonde, his relief of no longer being questioned was palpable. Just as the raven was about to open the door it flew open and almost hit him, revealing a very pissed off Orochimaru being followed by the very scared guard that Sasuke had paid to leave them in peace. Before Orochimaru could get a word in Sasuke cut him off, “I need to talk to you. In private. Now.” Orochimaru’s sickly yellow eyes widened, a trait that Sasuke would bet money on was a result of some form of chemical mutation in his body, before stepping out of the room and closing the door loudly behind them. Naruto watched all of this with confusion and a little worry. He had no idea what the hooded man was going to do now but the blonde had to admit that of the few people that observed him today he had seemed the nicest, or at least the less creepy and he would much prefer to go with him then stay here with Orochimaru. Creeping up to the door Naruto pressed his ear to the worn splintering wood and did his best to listen to the conversation going on, on the other side of it. “You can’t auction him off, he’s far to damaged at the moment,” Naruto recognised the voice of the stranger and scowled at the man’s assessment of him. He knew he wasn’t in the greatest of health after what Orochimaru had done to him but he didn’t want it pointed out . “If you’re talking about the little bit of rough and tumble I had with the boy then that’s nothing that won’t heal in a few days and then none will be the wiser,” Orochimaru’s sly voice grated on the blondes ears as he talked about him conquest like it was nothing. “No I'm not talking about that thought that is an issue. I'm talking about the fact that you’re trying to sell him off while he’s emotionally unstable. What if someone tries to take him out of the colony and he loses it? You’re putting whoever you sell him to in danger and if he does snap it’s going to be your head on the chopping block.” “Oh Sasuke it almost sounds as if you care about what happens to me,” Naruto could just see the twisted lustful look on Orochimaru’s face as he said that and he shuddered, “could it be that your hiding feeling for me that are more than friendship.” “The only feeling for you I'm hiding are the sick ones I get in my stomach whenever I have to do business with you,” the hooded man said blandly, “If you auction him off I’ll tell everyone what you’ve done to him and I have no doubt other slaves. He's not going to be worth the money you get for him while he’s in this state of mind.” There was silence for a moment and Naruto heard someone walk away before the door knob twisted and he quickly moved away to make it look like he hadn’t been listening to the two men talk. Orochimaru’s face was livid as he stepped into the room and grabbed Naruto by the wrist yanking the boy into his body, “What did you tell him?” “I just did as I was told and answered all of his questions, just like with the other man you sent in,” Naruto tried his hardest not to wrench himself out of Orochimaru’s grip, knowing that it woud only get him in more trouble than he was apparently in. Hissing Orochimaru threw the blonde into the grip of the guard standing to the side and Naruto yelped as the large man picked him up and slung him over his shoulder like he weighted nothing before following Orochimaru who was striding down the halls, the furious look on his face causing people to press themselves into the walls as he passed, hoping they would be swallowed up and be safe from his anger. Before Naruto knew it he was being dropped onto the dirty floor of the stage with all eyes on him once again as Orochimaru called for attention, “sorry to cut dear Naruto’s private viewings short but he’s such a hot item that I felt it best to sell him off while he’s still fresh in all of your minds.” There was a mixed reaction to this from the crowed. Some were pleased that they had the chance to take the blond home sooner whereas most were disappointed that they had missed their opportunity to view their potential property more closely. “Don’t fret though, because as an apology I have a gift for all of you” Orochimaru said in an attempt to please those who weren’t happy, “I’m going to do something never once done in the history of my slave house. I'm going to let you, my dear patrons, decided the starting biding price and your own increase amount.” The crowd cheered and Naruto felt like he was going to be sick as his reality struck him. This was really happening, it wasn’t some horrible dream that he would wake from. These were his last few minutes of freedom ad he would spend them watching others bid on him like he was cattle. One by one men and women began to bid, starting out cautiously at first but then moving on to bid higher and higher amounts. With the freedom to bid what they want fights soon broke out until the slave house was in a full blown state of anarchy. Naruto couldn’t help the smirk that spread across his features when Orochimaru had to dive to the ground to avoid a chair that had been flung toward the stage. The vile man deserved that and much more. It was a brawl and the guards on duty couldn’t deal with the amount of violent patrons. Naruto’s eyes frantically searched the area for a way to escape unnoticed during the melee and just as he was about to leap from the stage and make a run for it a shocking boom sounded throughout the room and everyone stopped mid fight to see what had caused it. Standing on one of the few tables that hadn’t been over turned during the fighting was the hooded man, one of his strange guns pointed toward the roof as plaster rained down on him from the large hole he just created. Holstering his weapon Sasuke affixed his gaze on Orochimaru from across the room, “I’ll be generous here. I’ll offer to cut the debt you owe my father by a third in exchange for the slave. Take it or I’ll return here in the afternoon with my brother and we’ll take what you owe my father in full.” “And what about the damage done to my roof, what do you plan to do about that,” Orochimaru squabbled, trying to bleed more money out of the Uchiha. “For that you should be thanking me,” Sasuke said as he jumped off the table silently, “if I hadn’t have gotten this crowd under control then you’d have more than just a damaged roof to deal with. Hell they might have destroyed your whole establishment if they had have been allowed to continue.” Orochimaru scowled, seeing that the Uchiha had trapped him. If he refused the others offer then he had not doubt that the boy would be back later with his older brother and they would simply take the slave from him, along with everything else of value that he owned to pay back his debts to their father. “Fine Sasuke you win,” Orochimaru sighed and hung his head slightly in defeat, “step forward and claim you prize.” Walking towards the stage Sasuke held out his hand to the blonde upon it, beckoning the other to come to him so he could help him down from the platform so neither would have to go through the network of back halls to get to the side entrance. Naruto bit his lip as he looked at the hand offered to him. He could still make a run for it but his chances of escaping now were practically non-existent. He would be better off trying to escape when he was alone with the man that now owned him. Biting his lip Naruto shuffled forward to the edge of the stage and prepared to leap off with the aid of the other but stoped when he felt the stranger’s eyes burning holes into him and he shuddered thinking what the others eyes actually looked like beneath his low hood. “You’re already hurt,” the stranger said quietly so no one would overhear, “you shouldn’t be so reckless with your body or it will take longer to heal. Take my hand and let me help you.” Naruto reluctantly took the offered hand, the others voice of reason winning out over his pride, and he couldn’t help but smile a little at the fact that the other was wearing gloves. It was a small petty thing to be relieved that he didn’t have to touch the other skin to skin but Naruto was taking any little victory he could get at the moment. Once he was off the stage and sure his feet would hold him Naruto let go of the man’s hand and stepped as far away from him as possible without it being seen as an attempt to escape. It was best not to make the other wary of his intentions before he actually tried anything. When Sasuke had the blonde safely beside him, he turned back to Orochimaru, “I’ll tell my father of the deal we’ve made and have him draw up the necessary paperwork. Someone will be sent down before the end of the day to deliver them to you.” Orochimaru scowled at the raven, “whatever you think is best. Now get yourself and that blonde thing out of here before I have you removed and I don’t want to see you here again. I’ll do my business through Itachi from now on.” “Suits me just fine,” Sasuke said with a smirk clear in his voice, “means I don’t have to deal with your creepy perverted arse anymore.” Sasuke didn’t wait for Orochimaru’s retort, knowing the man would be outright offended by his words, but the truth hurt and someone had to take Orochimaru down a peg or two. Grabbing his new slave by the arm Sasuke began to pull him through the crowd of people that were still milling around, curious to see the exchange between himself and the slave owner and wondering if another fight would break out after he left. Sasuke however didn’t miss the heated glares that some of Orochimaru’s patrons were giving him and his new purchase and his grip on Naruto’s wrist tightened, “stay close to me and move quickly. There are a few people who aren’t happy with how that just went down and I don’t want you injured, not when I’ve just spend more than your worth to acquire you.” “More than I'm worth?” Naruto didn’t know whether he should be offended or curious. Just how badly in debt was Orochimaru to this man’s father that even a third of it covered his price and then some. The man didn’t answer his question though, just pulled I'm along faster until they were clear of the crowd and then out in the streets of the colony’s bustling business district where they could easily disappear from the sight of any who wished them harm. Naruto followed obediently as the other led them through the confusing streets. The blonde knew that this was probably the best chance he had to escape what with their being so many people around but he had no idea where they actually were at the moment. If he was going to make a run for it he was going to do it when he had some sense of bearing and could get to a safe place. If he escaped now he would most likely be wandering for hours looking for something or someone familiar and would no doubt be caught by one of Orochimaru’s many men the routinely hunted for slaves in the streets and allies of the colony. Sasuke pulled Naruto around a corner and into a quiet alleyway before letting the blonde go and pulling a pair of cuffs from some of his pockets and snapping them around the tanned wrists and connecting a chain to them. “Don’t look at me like that,” Sasuke said when Naruto glared at him and pulled at the cuffs experimentally, “I’ve had slaves before and I know the look in your eyes. You’ve been thinking about escaping since the fight broke out at the slave house.” Naruto growled as Sasuke began to walk again and pulled on the chain that was connected to the cuffs. Naruto had no choice now, he had to follow the man that had just purchased him, he was literally walking on a lead like a pet. “Why did you buy me,” Naruto asked all of a sudden, wanting something to fill the silence, “I heard you talking to Orochimaru through the door. You said I was damaged and shouldn’t be sold, so why go against your own beliefs.” “I didn’t,” the other answered simply, “I still believe that you’re damaged and I didn’t say that you shouldn’t be sold, I just said that it was too soon to do it now. Regardless of how damaged you are your still valuable, you just need time to recover which most of those men and women in there wouldn’t have given you.” “And you will?” “I wouldn’t have wasted my time with you otherwise,” the other said heartlessly and Naruto scowled, “come along now, we have quite a way to go.” Naruto grunted as he was pulled along a little faster and decided not to bother speaking again. Whoever this man was he didn’t seem interested in conversation and the more he tried to interact with him the faster he was pulled along and the more he was told to keep quiet. They walked in silence for what seemed like hours to the blonde but couldn’t have been more than thirty minutes and soon Naruto found himself on the outskirts of the colony where many of the larger, older families had their homes in the mountains. Naruto had never been into this part of the colony before. The families that lived here were descended from the old world and were very powerful, not to mention rich beyond belief. He had never had a reason to be here before and he wouldn’t help but wonder if his new owner had taken a wrong turn somewhere and had gotten lost. “Are you sure we’re in the right place?” Naruto asked, wanting the man to know that it was okay if he had gotten lost and that Naruto was just as lost here as he. “Yes I'm sure, why do you seem so surprised?” The hooded man asked as he led them toward a high iron gate with guards standing in front of it. “Because you can’t possibly live here, you’re covered in dirt from head to toe and m pretty sure with all your weapons you’re a hunter, not someone of the upper class,” Naruto said as he pulled on the chain a little, trying to get the other to turn around and stop walking toward the armed guards at the gate. “You’re not too bright are you,” the other asked with a chuckle in his voice, “you’ve been walking behinds me all this time and you still haven’t figure out even a fraction of who I am or the family I am part of, the family you now belong to.” “What do you mean walking behind you,” Naruto stared intently at the strangers back to try and figure out what he meant and his eyes widened immediately at what had been pointed out to him. Imprinted on the leather of the other jacket was a symbol, one that had survived the end of the world and had become revered in the new one. Even he, a lower class colonist knew what it meant and who the symbol belonged to. A faded red and white fan about the size of his fist sat between he hooded man’s shoulder blades. The symbol of the greatest hunting family in the new history. A family that was known in every colony for miles. The symbol and the family was the Uchiha. Naruto was so shocked that he stopped walking, his mouth falling open at his terrible luck. The Uchiha were quite possibly the highest statured family that existed and there were also the most dangerous and arrogant. It was just like fate to stick him here, in a place he would hate. Sasuke turned to Naruto when he felt the dead weight on the end of the chain. He would have laughed at the blonde’s expression if he hadn’t been so worried by the fear he saw in the blue eyes. Clearly his family’s reputation had preceded him once again. Walking back to the blonde Sasuke tapped him under the chin to make him close his mouth before reaching up and removing his hood and mask, “my name is Sasuke Uchiha. I'm a hunter of the colony of Konoha and once you step through these gates you are my slave.” Sasuke reached into his pockets and took out the key to the blondes chains and unlocked them, pulling them away before pulling out a knife and giving it to the blonde, “if you can’t handle that, if you can’t handle becoming a part of this family then do the honourable thing and end your old life now since it has no future.” Naruto watched as Sasuke walked away, leaving him standing in front of the gates to what could be a new life for him. All he had to do was decide to take it. Could he really do it, could he take his own life? The guards at the gate watched him curiously as he stood there considering his future. Naruto felt like they were intruding on what should be a private moment. It was a bizarre feeling. “Are you going to do it kid?” one of the guards asked, “You wouldn’t be the first slave that Sasuke has tried to save from Orochimaru who simply killed themselves in the end.” “You think he would learn,” said the other guard, “you’d think he’d get sick of coming out here to retrieve that knife every single time.” You wouldn’t be the first slave that Sasuke had tried to save, the man’s words echoed through Naruto’s mind. Sasuke had saved him from Orochimaru? Sasuke had saved him from others who would have treated him worse than an animal? Naruto had trouble processing those thoughts in his mind and then others that showed up because of them. Sasuke was giving him a new life? It may not be one that he wanted, but at least it existed, at least it would be better than any other he could have had. He had never given up before on anything in his life, so why should he give up on living just because his mother had and his father had died. Looking up from the knife in his hand Naruto watched Sasuke’s retreating form before taking off after him, not noticing the relieved sigh from both of the guards at the gates. They wouldn’t have to clean up another young body and they wouldn’t have to watch Sasuke as he stood at the entrance for hours, wondering what he had done wrong again. Closing the iron gates the guards watched as Sasuke turned when he heard Naruto approach and accept the knife back with a small, almost non-existent smile. Maybe it would work out this time, maybe this slave, as defiant, nervous and broken as he seemed, was the one Sasuke had always been looking for.
