I added the tags to the description because it is a royal PITA to add them after the fact. However, this chapter is very very tame and alllll setup. Stick with it, though. :D
Naruto Uzumaki was in a foul mood. He couldn't believe his luck, though he should have guessed it would be bad by now. Thirty days. He had thirty days to get out of his apartment and he had on idea where he'd go.
Naruto cursed his luck -- his life -- as he crossed the campus and started the climb to the fourth floor of the Technology building. He had a love/hate relationship with the campus for his community college. It was old and pretty with all sorts of classical buildings and lots of grass. Which was saying something in the heart of the city he was in. There was little enough green in most of it. It was also almost total stairs and all of his classes seemed to be at the top of a building. Four flights to the computer labs. Three flights to the science lab. Two separate sets of stairs to get to the lecture halls (all three of them!). Even the dining hall was on the second floor. He couldn't understand how it happened that none of his classes in his, now three semesters there, could be on the first floor. Naruto turned the first corner and trudged up the second flight of stairs, his mind going over the class he was about to attend. Database programming. He had tried to get out of taking the class - it wasn't a requirement for his major. He wasn't a programmer, wasn't planning to be a programmer, but his Godfather, Jiraiya, a writer of no small renown - of both respectable technical and... not so respectable non-technical publications, insisted that it was important for him to understand the stuff if he was going to be a network administrator. So, trusting the man who's been surrogate parent to him since he was a baby, he'd taken the class. And he hated every minute of it. Of course, half of that - no, probably more, if he was being fair - was the asshole that was in the class with him. Brash, loud and obnoxious, Kiba Inuzuka was everything that annoyed Naruto. Never mind that Naruto's personality was as fiery as Kiba's was; that wasn't the point. But Kiba's loud behavior reminded him how much he missed his high school friends, especially Sasuke -- the quiet, serious not obnoxious guy that had started out tutoring him and turned into his friend. The guy he'd had a crush on for more of his high school years than he'd like to admit to. The one who'd gone on to attend school in Massachusetts. Fucking Harvard. Asshole, Naruto grumbled to the image of Sasuke in his head as he yanked at the double doors leading into the outer computer lab. He was in a right foul mood by the time he reached the classroom and so threw his bag down onto the floor next to his desk with more force than was necessary. He jabbed his finger at the power button on his computer, relieved, at least, that he wasn't subject - yet - to Inuzuka. He scowled at the ridiculously slow machine, wishing again that he hadn't taken the class, though realistically he knew the computer and the class weren't really the biggest problem. He sighed when that problem flopped into the chair next to him. It wasn't bad enough that the man was in class with him, no. Kiba had to sit right next to him, too. Naruto held onto his annoyance carefully and settled for shooting a look at Kiba instead of the multitude of other things he'd like to do. The man next to him didn't say anything at first and Naruto took a moment to look at his aggravation out of the corner of his eye. He'd done it before, though Naruto refused to admit that to himself. He was not attracted to Kiba Inuzuka. He wasn't. Kiba's family had Native American blood in them. Naruto had no idea which tribe or nation or whatever, but Kiba had two long birthmarks on his cheeks that looked almost like huge fangs and his eyeteeth were ridiculously sharp. He had mostly dark colored eyes with slightly elongated pupils that looked kind of weird and more than a little exotic. Naruto wouldn't admit to thinking they were sexy. All of those traits were supposed to be a product of Kiba's ancestry. Naruto knew all about that because he'd overheard Kiba talking about it. Not that he could have ignored it, the man had practically been shouting about it to another student who had rudely - even in Naruto's estimation - pointed it out and asked Kiba about it. Naruto may have his own shortcomings - and the list was long and varied, according to his godfather, but he'd managed to avoid asking about it and being that rude. Not that he didn't want to. But the abrasive manner Kiba had of answering any question asked him, put Naruto off. So, despite Naruto's own normally rude and curious nature he'd kept himself from asking. He pushed the thoughts aside and turned to the computer which had finally finished booting. He had no idea why they shut them down between classes when it took so freaking long to reboot, but that wasn't his business. Especially in that room. The other labs weren't nearly as bad. But he only had six more weeks of that class then, if he was lucky, he'd never see the inside of this particular room again. Or the Inuzuka sitting next to him. He shook his head at himself and started up his web browser, intending to send his godfather an email. Turning his attention to his biggest problem: his apartment building was closing. He'd found the notice on his door after work that day and had argued with the super about it on the way to class. No, there was nothing they could - or would do. There were structural issues with the foundation and, rather than paying to fix it, the company was levelling it and building something new in its place. And Naruto had thirty days to find a new place to live. Just as he was typing that, the one voice he really didn't want to hear intruded. "You gotta find a place ta live?" Naruto closed his eyes briefly then turned his attention to Kiba. "Didn't anyone tell you it's rude to read over some one's shoulder?" He asked with an irritated scowl. Brown eyebrows went up and a wicked grin stretched across the face. "No," he answered, completely unperturbed, with an irritating chuckle. Naruto blinked at the other man for a moment before he turned back to his computer. "Yeah, I gotta find a place, what's it to you?" "Well, just so happens I have an open bedroom in my apartment," Kiba said and Naruto turned again to look at his fellow student. He found himself simply blinking into the odd eyes for a solid minute. Live with Kiba? There was no way! He'd be insane to do it. If the man annoyed the crap out of him during a single three-hour a week class, what would he do in the same apartment? But instead of the automatic "no" he meant to say, "Don't you have a roommate?" Came out instead. "Nope. Just left. Decided he didn' like my brand'a livin', I guess. Maybe it was my dog..." he said, thoughtfully, then shrugged. "Akamaru's just a big baby, though, likes people, ya know. But the kid made some comment 'bout preferrin' to be alone with his "creations" - he was an art student - and decided he's better off on his own." Kiba shrugged again. "His family can afford it -- exchange student, don'tcha know. Son of a dead minister of some sort overseas. Why he'd choose to come to this godforsaken town, I have no idea. But... either way, he left, so, who cares?" Naruto stared at Kiba a minute. "Oh," he said, with no idea what else he could possibly say to that. "Well. Uh, how much? I work during the day, go to class at night. But I'm mostly paying my own way. My godfather pays for tuition and stuff, but..." he trailed off when he saw that Kiba understood. Kiba looked thoughtful for a minute. "Truthfully, Kankuro paid the lion's share of the rent. But if you can do half, I'm good." He named a number and Naruto tried not to let his reaction show. It was less than half of what he was paying now. "Uh, where is it?" Naruto asked, trying not to get excited. He reminded himself he'd be sharing an apartment with Kiba, after all. That helped. "Few blocks over from the student union. Been there a couple of years, 'fore they lifted the rent control and I gotta good lease. Can't keep a roommate for long, but they like the rent, so they try, at least." He shrugged and Naruto's eyebrow went up. "Why don't they stay?" He asked. Kiba was obnoxious and loud, but he didn't seem... that bad. Kiba shrugged again. "Like I said, maybe it's my style o' livin'. Or the dog. Dunno. Or maybe we just didn't get along." Naruto scratched the side of his head, trying to think it through. Despite his chosen major, he wasn't the swiftest member of his graduating class. He needed a place to go and, if nothing else, Kiba's apartment would at least give him the chance to find something better without the time limit. "Okay, sure. Uh, when?" Kiba grinned, his sharp eyeteeth showing and Naruto felt a shiver run through him that he refused to recognize for what it was. "Anytime. You move soon enough, we can even study together. If, that is, you really study." Naruto scowled, "Of course I do," he insisted and Kiba's grin widened, knowing it for the lie it was. "Of course," he agreed and Naruto shook his head. He was sure it was going to be a mistake, moving in with the biggest source of his annoyance. He scratched at his own birthmark - lines on his cheeks that looked like whiskers then rubbed at the back of his blond head as he thought through the wording for his email to his godfather. At least with this, he wasn't going to have to ask for money."Okay, chapter ten and twelve for next week. I want the projects at the end of both chapters done. And on paper. I don't want something printed from Access. I want your handwriting," Professor Kamizuki said, brown eyes shooting around the room. Naruto rolled his eyes. Of course he did. That meant that he couldn't borrow anything, couldn't do shortcuts. He'd have to think it through and write it all out. He made a face as he threw his stuff in his bag and turned to Kiba. "So, I'm packed," he said, and sighed. "That didn't take long," Kiba said, spinning in his seat and stretching, popping his back over the chair. "I'm a college student. I don't exactly have a lot of stuff," Naruto pointed out, then shrugged. "Most of the time was taken up cleaning," he grinned as he stood up and scratched at the back of his head. "Hope you don't mind if my room's a mess." Kiba shrugged and snatched up his bag as he started for the door. "I don't care if you don't. Might not wanna invite the parents, but..." he trailed off and shrugged a shoulder. "So, you got a car? Or what?" Naruto frowned. "No, no car. I ride the bus. No place to park it by the building, anyway and I spend all my time here or at Starbucks." Kiba nodded. "I can get my big sister to come out this weekend and load up her car," he offered. Naruto was still not too sure this was the best idea - moving in with Kiba, but he knew he didn't have enough time to find something else - not if he wanted to keep his job and his grades, too. He scratched at the back of his head, again. "I guess. I don't want to..." Kiba waved it off. "Don't worry about it, Hana won't care. She's coming up to do a check up on Akamaru, anyway." Naruto shrugged. "If you're sure..." "It's fine. Tell me when and where and we'll be there," Kiba said and Naruto stared at him for another moment. He'd basically been nothing but rude to Kiba since they met, thanks to the general behavior the other man had - and what it reminded Naruto of. But despite that, Kiba hadn't been rude to him and he didn't quite get it. Kiba had every right to, but he didn't. Naruto would figure it out eventually, even if it took him a while and so he nodded. "Okay," he said, and pulled out a piece of paper. "This is my cell number and my address. I don't have much stuff, like I said. Unless she drives a Mini Cooper, it should fit in one trip. Uh, or if you bring your dog..." Kiba laughed. "No, Akamaru can stay home for this. He'd take up her whole car." Naruto raised his eyebrows. He still hadn't met the dog and the only picture Kiba had shown him was a badly taken one on the cell phone. "Well, okay, then. Just... call me when you're ready. I took Saturday off for it." Kiba nodded and Naruto blinked at him because the other man was... chewing on his lip? "Hey, uh..." He started, then took a deep breath. "Do you want to get some coffee or something?" Naruto stared for a minute. Is he asking me out? "You know, just something to wake us up after his crazy class," he hurried to clarify and Naruto found himself annoyed to no end... because he was a little disappointed. "Uh, sure," he said and they turned and started to make their way through the computer labs, throwing waves at their teacher. The professor wasn't bad, as long as they paid attention in class. Which wasn't too often. He had a partner that sometimes taught with him who was a lot more relaxed and both Kiba and Naruto liked the other guy better, because he was so much more laid back. But he wasn't there all the time and they were stuck with Kamizuki instead. They walked in a semi-awkward silence across the quad to the student union. "Probably the only thing open, right?" Kiba asked to fill in and Naruto nodded. "Probably," Naruto replied, and stepped through the door that was held for him. "Thank you," he remembered to say, despite his confusion. "No problem," Kiba said and they headed to the coffee counter. Naruto glanced over to see Kiba watching him and he raised an eyebrow. "Oh, um, go ahead, I don't know what I want yet." "Okay," Naruto said, turning to the guy behind the counter. "Um, chai, please." "Chai?" Kiba asked. "What's that?" "Tea, actually. I drink so much coffee at work," he said, scratching the back of his head in embarrassment. "Oh. Is it any good?" Naruto nodded. "Yeah. Spicy, but kinda good." "Huh," Kiba said, then turned to the guy behind the counter. "Same thing he's having." Kiba paid for them - after arguing with Naruto about it for a full minute, he finally won by saying that he asked, so he paid and Naruto just gave up. Naruto picked up his tea and headed out to the tables, picking one in a corner, near the window. He didn't get why it was such a big deal, it wasn't like they were on a date or anything. It was just coffee - or tea - after class. Right? Then why was he checking out Kiba's ass as the other man crossed the room to the drink station? Or why was he watching the muscles of the other man's back ripple under the snug t-shirt he was wearing when he bent and lifted his bag? He could appreciate a well-toned body. It didn't matter what they were doing or what this was. Right? Kiba crossed the room again and took the seat on the bench opposite Naruto. "So..." he started and Naruto raised an eyebrow. "You... like anime?" Naruto grinned. "Love it. Which ones?" "Bleach is up there. Um, Death Note's pretty good. I like Blood+. Then there's that one... I can never remember the name - that ninja kid, right? Fuck..." he scratched his head and twisted his face in thought for minute, then shrugged. "I know which one you mean, but I always forget the name, too. I had a weird dream one night that I was the kid in the anime." He shook his head with a grin and Kiba laughed. "It gets better, Professor Kamizuki was a gate guard and his partner - uh, the other teacher..." "Hagane?" "Yeah, him. He was always trying to get out of work. There were a whole bunch of others in the class - other professors and some of the administration, other students. It was really weird." Kiba laughed. "Good dream." Naruto chuckled. "Thanks. So... what about, uh, food and stuff?" Kiba shrugged. "I just make basic stuff like ramen and mac and cheese, that kind of thing." "Ramen! Alright! I live on the stuff!" Naruto nearly shouted and Kiba laughed. "Yeah, I'm not much of a cook," Kiba said, shaking his head. "Me either. My godfather keeps trying to get me to take a class or something to learn but I don't see the point," Naruto said, shrugging. "I'm single and probably staying that way, so..." he trailed off. "My sister's been trying to teach me for... God... years. My mom was never much of a cook. She's a little weird. She's real... rough, I guess, around the edges. She's a dog breeder and trainer for the K-9 units for the cops here in town. She loves animals, but is a real carnivore, too. I don't get it - not that I don't eat meat or anything, I just don't cook it much 'cause it's too much hassle." He shrugged. "Hana comes by and cooks up stuff for me to nuke now and again. Maybe we can bribe her. She loves Starbucks, so if we got her coffee or something Saturday, I bet she'd make some stuff for us to freeze," Kiba said with a grin. "I can do that. I get a discount, so I might as well put it to good use," Naruto agreed. "It's bound to be better than this food," he said, tilting his head toward the food lines. "Well, hell, my cooking's better than that. If we eat together, maybe I can try to remember what she taught me." "If?" Naruto asked. "Yeah, Kanky wasn't much interested in hanging out. Anyway..." he trailed off, playing with the lid of his tea. Naruto took a sip from his own cup as he thought it over, then glanced at his watch. It wasn't late, per se, but he needed to get home and away from Kiba for now. He was confused as all hell by the guy and needed a little bit of space, because in a few days he wasn't going to get any and he knew enough that his confusion wasn't going to get better then. "Hey, uh, I gotta work in the morning," he started, but Kiba held a hand up. "No worries, so do I. I actually have two part-time jobs," Kiba said, standing. "I spin on the weekends at a place over near the riverfront and then I work in the labs here." Naruto nodded. "Sucks having to do it that way, but yeah." They turned toward the door. "Hey, if you're not too tired from moving on Saturday, I can get you in if I tell 'em you're with me. You just can't drink. Do you wanna go? See my rig and stuff?" Naruto turned to Kiba and wondered at the look on the other man's face. "Yeah, I'm always off on Sunday's, so I don't have to get up early or anything. So, uh, that works." Kiba's face split into a grin. "Okay. Yeah. Well, I'll, uh, see you on Saturday, then." Naruto nodded. He was starting to think that maybe, just maybe, he hadn't been giving Kiba much of a chance. "Yeah, see you Saturday. Then you'll get sick of me," he joked and laughed at himself. Kiba chuckled. "Maybe. More likely you'll get sick o' me," he said and Naruto blinked at the expression on Kiba's face. Kiba was expecting that. Naruto didn't respond to that, but filed the information into the back of his mind, so Kiba smiled. "Uh, see ya," he said, throwing a wave up and turning to head down the street. "Later!" Naruto called and watched him walk away for the longest time, finally only moving when Kiba turned a corner. He was lost in thought the whole way home.
