Author’s Note: Nothing major here, just an old piece of mine (that I buttered up some) where Naruto and Sasuke share a moment in an alternate time line. Hope you guys like it. FYI this story has only been edited by me, so there may be some mistakes. Please excuse any. Also the original idea came from some pictures I seen in a Doujinshi many, many years ago. Although the events that transpire are not the same, since seeing it, I’ve always wanted to write a story where Sasuke returns home to see Naruto.

All these years have gone by, and yet still my heart breaks every time I think of you...
Naruto stumbled through the front door, he was exhausted and coming home to an empty house did little to lift his spirits. It had been that way for the last six years though; each day dragging on like an eternity, every year a hellish purgatory where his soul felt like it was suspended in time. Even if he’d physically given up on chasing Sasuke, the damage inflicted to his heart would not so easily dissipate. The raven would always be bound to him in one way or another, and because of that, there would always be an insatiable feeling of loneliness that thrived inside of him. That was the damnation Naruto suffered for his best friend—for the person he would have given everything to save—but Sasuke refused to be saved no matter how hard he tried.
Slipping off his shoes the blonde gave an exasperated sigh and padded down the long hallway, careful not to trip over his cat who was eagerly keeping instep beneath his tired feet. He’d acquired her on a mission a few years back; a cute little Siamese with sandy-tan fur and chocolate colored feet. In light of things she was a bit of an odd ball –always biting Sai and jumping on Sakura– but he truly enjoyed her company on lonely nights like these. In some ways, it made the magnitude of his desolation feel lessened from its disparity. He supposed that it was just his futile attempt at deception though—a way to make it seem like he had something that he didn't. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. The level of deception varied from day to day. Tonight the pain wasn't as bad as it could have been, but it was still there.
Making his way into the kitchen, Naruto let his thoughts drift as he moved auto-pilot. Quickly he opened a can of cat food and poured a fresh saucer of milk; eyeing the ramen cupboard wearily before shaking his head and heading toward his room. He hadn’t eaten all day but he wasn’t really hungry. It was actually an occurrence that was becoming quite frequent. At first it had started with missing one meal and then two. Now it wasn’t odd for him to go all day without eating. Kakashi had gotten on his case about it a few times –saying he was getting far too thin– but Naruto’s work had yet to suffer from it so he didn’t really see what the problem was. He just wasn’t hungry—just didn’t feel like eating, and he didn’t have the aspiration to force it. He often wondered if he would have felt the same way had Sasuke been by his side, but he surmised that answer to that probably would have been no.
The blonde tousled a hand through his disheveled locks and opened his bedroom door, noting that the window was slightly ajar. There was no recollection of leaving it that way but in his tired state of mind he let the notion slip. Falling down onto the large king sized bed Naruto frowned at the luxury beneath him. It was a comfortable mattress and the sheets were soft and expensive, but he still couldn’t help but feel dissatisfied by it. Then again, maybe that was because he was lying there alone.
Prone to fulfilling his job as a ninja, Naruto had worked hard for ANBU early on in his career. He’d made a lot of extra cash taking near-suicide missions and now had a comfortable lifestyle to show for it. Of course it wasn’t much in comparison to what life would have been like with Sasuke—but again, that was the frivolous dream that he constantly found himself wishing for; always hoping that one day it would come true, only to be disappointed. Sasuke had left him behind years ago and now he all he could do was sift through the ashes of the past; trying to hold on to the memories as they slipped through his hands, carried off by the wind of life. Just like Sasuke had desired, the raven had successfully killed Orochimaru before the man could claim him as a vessel. He’d brought justice to his clan by slaying Itachi and yet he’d stayed with team Hebi for the aftermath. He’d refused to come home, and now days, Naruto wondered if it wasn’t best just give up the last bit of hope that he had left. After all, what was the point of trying when Sasuke was still so adamant about not being saved?
As bitter as it seemed, the years had taught Naruto that you couldn’t force things by sheer desire. Equally life didn’t work for a one-sided loved, and the hope that was intertwined with such a notion was just as easily unraveled. In that sense he was tired of re-tying knots; of pulling threads taut only to have the slack seep in again—the structure falling apart as he fell apart and he would be lying to say that he wasn’t frayed and crumbling.
Emptiness—it was at the core of all his emotions. It was what moved beneath the surface of his beating heart. Every day he watched what he wanted fade away a little more, knowing that deep inside, nothing could fix it. In the end it seemed as if there was no foundation to build upon, and trying to save Sasuke –chasing that dream– had become something unimaginably painful. He was reaching that final point where his blistered hands were raw from holding on. He had to let go before the wounds severed the skin too deeply, before they rotted and festered and infected him to the point of no return.
Naruto knew he couldn’t go that far. Too many other people were counting on him. He couldn’t selfishly live his life for only Sasuke even if he wanted to.
Distracted by a light breeze, the blonde cracked an eye open, very well aware that someone had entered his room but he was unable to tell who it was. He felt little concern however. Quite often ninja’s entered his house via the window and they almost always tried to hide their presence in order to catch him off guard. He was anticipating Kakashi or maybe Kiba –both checked on him regularly– but the person who he spied sitting on the edge of the window ceil was someone he never thought he’d see in the village again. “Sasuke?”
At the sound of his name the figure turned his head and a pair of dark eyes blinked slowly; red speckled orbs looking at the speaker with a tinge of amusement. Their owner was sitting comfortably on window ledge with his back against the frame, one leg folded in while the other dangled inside the room carelessly. For being a missing-nin, Sasuke looked rather comfortable where he was.
Naruto swallowed thickly. “What are you doing here?” he asked.
Despite the fact that the evening hours showered the room in nothing but a few threads of pale light, the blonde was able to see that the fathering years had been kind to the raven. His body was still lean, but much more toned then he could remember; the form draped in baggy clothes that gave him a free range to fluent movements. Likewise his hair was still as black as the night –framing his face with the utmost grace– the dark tress counteracting perfectly against pale flesh. As a result the defining contrast made Sasuke’s skin looked smooth and delicate, giving an impression that if Naruto were to touch it; it would break apart and float away with the wind. The idea was preposterous of course, but the sentiment behind it remained: Sasuke looked as untouchable as always.
“Dobe…” The voice expelled was deep and smooth, stroking the night air with force that made Naruto shiver with nostalgia. He had loved Sasuke—still loved Sasuke, and would always love him until the day he died. There was no changing those feelings, even if they would never be reciprocated in the way he wanted them to be. “…I see the world is treating you well these days,” the raven finished, stating the obvious to the environment around them.
Despite the fact that he didn’t feel that way Naruto simply nodded and raised himself into a sitting position; his blue eyes watching Sasuke with concern –wondering if maybe he would disappear if he moved to fast or said the wrong thing. “Life’s been okay…” There was hesitation and the blonde chided his nerves. This was Sasuke he was talking to and there was no need to be apprehensive. Albeit with that thought fell others; ones that he was not happy in knowing the reality behind. Parting his lips Naruto’s voice broke the air almost painfully. “Did you come home, or am I going to have to apprehend you?”
Sasuke cocked his head to the side and smirked; the soft red slits of his lips shattering Naruto’s ability to focus. The blonde had missed that cocky grin and the vainglorious words that always come with it. Sasuke didn’t disappoint him this time either. “You know that I didn’t come here for that,” the elder replied punctually, as if the matter was indeed obvious. To Naruto—it wasn’t.
“Then what did you come here for?” The blonde challenged.
“To see you…” Sasuke’s voice was even and his gaze steady. “I know it’s been a long time, but you still consider me your best friend right? …Or did that change when they named you Hokage?”
Naruto frowned at the coyness behind the other’s remark and rose to his feet, stomping over to Sasuke as he pointed a finger accusingly. “You know something like that would never change my opinion of you. It’s just that I have obligations to Konoha now, I can’t give in to my own feelings!”
“Obligations…” Sasuke parroted; his face mundane though his eyes spoke of something deeper.
Naruto just stood there, glaring at him fiercely and Sasuke gave a vexed sigh. “Come closer Naruto,” he motioned, his hand extended in a friendly gesture despite the way his voice had issued the command.
As expected the blonde did just the opposite as he was told; moving back to get away, but Sasuke’s anticipation made it pointless. Faster than Naruto’s dexterity, that pale hand was reaching out, fingers gripping the tanned limb in a way that promised he wouldn’t let go. “You’re as stupid as always,” the raven jeered, pulling the blonde close to his chest. Naruto grunted disapprovingly but didn’t struggle, his arms slowly working to clutch the elder’s clothes in a desperate embrace. He didn’t want to do this.
“Don’t do this Sasuke…” He pleaded, his ear pressed against the other’s chest as he listened to the raven’s heart beat. Sasuke had a heart. He was human. It’s just that it didn’t always feel that way in regards to the things the elder did.
“Don’t do what?” The answer was obvious, but Sasuke beseeched the words anyway.
“Don’t show up here like this. Don’t hold on to me like you care. Don’t give me this goddamn hope, when you’re just going to take it away.”
“But you know I’m going to take it away, so why do you bother getting so sentimental about it?”
To those words Naruto couldn’t find the strength to answer and he simply stayed quiet; holding on to Sasuke, wishing that time would stop flowing—that he could hold onto the moment forever.
“I don’t want to let you go Sasuke…” he finally replied, the silence between them holding thick for several minutes. “I want to know, did you come here to rub that in my face? Six long years I waited; six long years I desired nothing more than to see you…and now, on some whim, you show up, ready to hurt me all over again. Don’t you see how unfair it is? I’ve always loved you, and you’ve always abused that. If you can’t stay, then why come back at all…”
“Because I wanted to see you—“
“You wanted to torment me!” Naruto corrected pushing away. Suddenly Sasuke’s warmth seemed inhumanly cold—the ideal of that long sought loving embrace smothering him in unforgivable ways. It just hurt too much to be held by the one who habitually betrayed him. It wasn’t fair and Sasuke knew that. It only made their inevitable outcome that much more bitter. “You’re a sadistic bastard for always doing this to me!”
“But you always forgive me,” the raven countered.
In response the younger boy again took a step back in defiance, but once more Sasuke foresaw the move; his hand reaching out to embrace the back of that tan neck, leaning in to sever the distance between them—their lips lingering a hairs-breath away. “You waited all this time for me. And I bet if I kiss you now, you’ll keep on waiting for the rest of your life.”
Not giving Naruto the chance to rebuke the raven leaned in and diminished the void between them; his lips pressing against their counterpart as the two embraced each other in forgotten ways. It had been forever since Sasuke had catered to the blonde’s warmth and that sentiment was equal in regards to Naruto who was already opening his mouth to let the other man’s tongue slip inside. Sasuke tasted so good, so sweet. Just like Naruto had remembered him—just like he would remember him in the years to come.
“Sasuke… don’t go, stay with me,” the blonde whimpered when the raven pulled finally away, his hands clutching the folds of the open shirt, knuckles bleeding white, heart desperate, broken, falling apart at the seams. Why did it have to be this way? Why couldn’t Sasuke stay? Of course Naruto knew why, but that didn’t make things any less difficult nor did it quell the pain in his chest. Sasuke chose hatred over him, chose his own path while selfishly letting Naruto believe that there might be something real between them. There wasn’t though and there never would be. “I love you Sasuke…”
Red and black tinted eyes watched watery blue; a pale hand reaching out to brush Naruto’s tears away. “I know….”
Naruto shut his eyes at those words, a light wave of wind washing over him as Sasuke fingers withdrew; his soul breaking, the emptiness sinking in all over again. This was it. The elder was leaving and Naruto had no clue when he‘d seen the raven again. Sasuke’s cruelty was truly manifold—unbearably brutal and yet within it lingered a false sense of hope that was even worse.
“Come back soon,” the blonde whispered fondly, the room now empty as his eyelids fluttered open.
There were no signs to show that Sasuke had ever been there save for the memories that were locked in Naruto‘s heart and the painful realization that he was alone again.
