888 It hadn’t been intentional. It was just one of those things that happened. They’d been spending a lot of time together, training, fighting, competing and becoming friends. Sasuke was his rival, his best friend, and probably the only person he trusted enough to know the truth. It had started out innocently with a thunderstorm. Naruto had been training with Sasuke, well they had been trying to pummel each other when the storm hit. They were rushing back toward the village but when the sky let loose even more fury and lighting that cracked just inches before Naruto’s feet made Sasuke pull the jinjuriki into his own home. “You’re going to get yourself killed Dobe. Just stay here tonight…” The Uchiha had muttered stripping his shoes and shirt as he moved toward his bedroom. “Uh thanks, can I borrow…” He felt the pajama pants hit him in the face and smirked. “Thanks Bastard.” Sasuke pointed to the guest bathroom. Slipping into the dry pants he grabbed a towel hanging from a rack and started drying his hair. Moving back into the main part of the house he blinked at Sasuke’s scowl. “What are you doing?” The Uchiha was in a perfect snit. “Those are not to be used. That towel is for decoration. Give me that! Now it has to be washed. These damn things have to go on a delicate cycle and I’ll have to wash them all so this one doesn’t fade or change color tone and the rest stay normal.” Stalking into the bathroom to gather the other things the raven haired boy growled. “You left your wet clothes on the floor?” “What the hell Teme?” Naruto made a face, completely confused. “You have decorative towels? Who the fuck has decorative TOWELS?” He sighed when his wet things hit him squarely in the chest. It was official, Sasuke was a total chick. How could such a badass be such a girl? Naruto, however, saw another crack of lightening and decided to keep his observations to himself. “Normal people Naruto. Normal people with normal homes have decorative towels.” He shook his head unsurprised at the blond’s lack of knowledge. “It’s so things look nice when you have company over.” Snorting Naruto followed him to the small laundry closet. “Like you have people over. You have some secret club or something ‘cause no one has been here before?” “You’re here Dobe.” Sasuke put the towels into the wash and looking at the soaked things deposited Naruto’s orange track suite with them. He wasn’t sure the last time it had a proper washing but it could probably use one. Naruto thanked him and chuckled when his stomach growled. Rolling his eyes Sasuke’s lips tilted just slightly and he motioned Naruto to follow. Sasuke made a quick dinner consisting of roasted chicken sandwiches and plain salty potato chips. Dinner was eaten at the kitchen island. Sasuke quite firmly refused to eat in the living room. When things had been cleaned and put back in their place, a bemused Naruto watched Sasuke lead him into the living room as he flicked on his TV. “Wow you have a TV! I figured you’d like to meditate or read. You know something lame.” Jumping onto the sofa Naruto smiled when Sasuke flicked through his recoded TV shows to watch the latest installments of Bleach. The two boys ended up arguing about the sword work and who was a better fighter until Naruto yawned loud enough that it cracked his jaw. “Get some sleep Dobe. It’s late and we have team training in the morning.” Gathering a blanket, sheet and some pillows from a hall closet he personally made the sofa up as a bed going so far as to turn the blanket down and neatly stack the sofa pillows from the back of the couch into a perfect stack in the corner of the room. “What no mint on the pillow?” Naruto laughed and hissed when his comment earned him a punch to the arm. 888 A third of the way through the night, Naruto woke swinging as Sasuke shook him from his sleep. “Damn it Naruto!!” The pale worried face looked down into haunted blue eyes. For all the horror Sasuke had lived through not only finding everyone he loved dead but having to live with seeing through his brother’s eyes the murder of his clan, he couldn’t imagine what was happening inside his teammate to cause him to scream and beg for ten minutes straight without waking from whatever terror was awaiting him there in his sleep. He swallowed when Naruto looked away hugging himself and rocking. It was the tears streaking down the scarred cheeks that had him pulling a sobbing Naruto into his arms. He held on to the other boy until Naruto had literally cried himself to sleep. Sasuke wanted to get up and go back to his bed but he couldn’t leave Naruto at the mercy of his nightmares and no matter how good he was he wasn’t strong enough yet to carry the completely limp body of a compact but purely muscular boy. Instead and with a very annoyed air, Sasuke pulled the blankets down along with the pillows and lay on the floor, Naruto wrapped around him. He didn’t think of how it felt to be so warm, to feel secure, to have the weight of Naruto’s head on his shoulder, or how it felt to have Naruto’s warm breath against his neck. He didn’t think because all of those things had him fast asleep in minutes. When the alarm started going off, Sasuke growled pulling himself out from under the blond menace. Sasuke returned to the living space having turned off the alarm, showered and dressed in clean clothes only to find Naruto still snoring and drooling on his pillow. Sasuke would need to remember to wash that pillow. He took Naruto’s things from the dryer and put them in the bathroom. “Dobe, get up if you want breakfast before we leave.” He nudged the Uzumaki with his toes. Breakfast had been simple and they arrived at training together just after Sakura. The pink haired girl cooed over Sasuke. “How did you sleep Sasuke? Did you have a nice night? I got so scared when the storm rolled through. I wish I had a boyfriend who could have held me through it.” “Hn.” Sasuke’s eyes darkened as she started her less then subtle flirting. Turning to Naruto he raised a brow as the usually rambunctious blond sighed and rolled his eyes. When he saw the dark brow raised at him in question the younger boy flashed a bright smile. “Hey Sakura, do you want to have lunch with me? I’ve got coupons for Ichiraku!” Naruto looked at her with expectant blue eyes. Trying not to sneer too hard, Sakura worked to find a good reason why she couldn’t. “Uh… well I don’t know Naruto…” “I’ll go with you Dobe. I haven’t had ramen in two months.” He held back a laugh when Naruto’s jaw fell wide open. Naruto was too easy to play with sometimes. Shaking his head Naruto moaned as if in pain. “Two months? TWO months? Sasuke, Teme how do you survive?” “I eat real food.” This comment quickly devolved into an argument between the two, which turned into a fist fight and then sparring. Sakura sat back watching, completely forgotten. The next two months were much the same. At least twice a week for one reason or another Naruto would spend the night at Sasuke’s. They’d eat dinner, watch some TV and then sleep. Sasuke had decided by the third night that he was not getting out of bed to wake or hold his blond friend so Naruto had ended up on the other side of his queen sized bed. When Naruto went to his own apartment, Sasuke found himself stomping around his own home irritated at the quiet of it all. The Dobe was so loud and always talking as if he needed to fill the quiet. That was one of the things he hated most about Naruto. Slowly Naruto and Sasuke began to spend more time together than just odd evenings. The two ate lunch, trained or just walked through the village talking. They were becoming very insular. Neither appreciated Sakura and Ino’s blatant flirting with the raven. Sasuke had also taken to turning Naruto onto a different route when he sensed the Hyuuga heiress nearby. Naruto had accepted a mission with team 10 spending two full weeks with the girl. Though she didn’t flirt, her infatuation with Naruto set Sasuke’s blood to boiling and he didn’t even understand it. When Naruto returned though, it wasn’t Hinata that he was smiling at, it was Inuzuka. The mutt and Naruto had been bouncing around each other telling stories of their mission and the complete bad-assery of what they had accomplished against their attackers. Sasuke had only been able to listen to it for thirty minutes before he’d left without a single word. For four days Sasuke didn’t speak a word to Naruto. The blond hadn’t been invited to the Uchiha home or gotten more than a ‘hn’from the dark haired boy. Well past midnight Sasuke answered a knock at his door, scowling furiously as he swung the door open. “Someone better be dying!” He snarled then realized he was staring into red rimmed blue eyes. Naruto stood on his patio fidgeting in nothing but his sleep shirt and shorts. Sighing Sasuke had opened his door and let the jinjuriki into his home then led him back to bed. When the alarm went off, both teens groaned and glared at the alarm clock. It had been the first good night’s sleep either had gotten since before Naruto had gone on his mission and it had just not been long enough. They lay there a bit longer, Sasuke soaking up Naruto’s warmth wrapped around his body as Naruto basked in the feeling of having skin to skin contact to another person. Neither spoke about the way they started on opposite sides of the bed and by morning ended up intimately entwined. They didn’t talk about how they only seemed to get comfortable when they’d maneuvered around the sofa enough to be sitting up long wise with their feet in one another’s lap. They didn’t talk about how Sasuke now kept ramen in his cabinet or how Naruto had learned to make strong tea with just the right bitterness to entice rare smiles from the Uchiha. “I uh… don’t have anything to wear. I forgot my jump suit.” Naruto whispered, voice dry from sleep and raspy. The tone made Sasuke want to kiss him. The thought hit him like a sucker punch to the gut and the pale boy pulled away getting quickly out of bed. “Dobe! That’s what happens when you run around in the middle of the fucking night in your pajamas.” Turning, Sasuke pulled some things from his closet and tossed them at Naruto. “Get dressed. I’m going to make breakfast then I’ll get dressed.” Sasuke quickly moved to the kitchen racking his brain as he made them bowls of cereal and cut up fruit. Swallowing when Naruto exited, seeing the shorts a little tighter on the stouter boy’s thighs and the shirt tight across his shoulders. Pushing a bowl at Naruto, Sasuke and the other boy ate in silence. Going to change into his own clothes, Sasuke retuned in his white and blue. Naruto was in black shorts and one of Sasuke’s blue shirts bearing the Uchiha fan on the shoulder and across the back. They whispered, talking to one another as they made their way through the village toward the bridge where team 7 met. The whispers that followed their meandering went unnoticed by the boys, one of whom was very excited about today’s training. At the bridge Sakura’s green eyes widened and her jaw dropped. Stomping over she grabbed Naruto by the ear jerking him away from Sasuke without explanation. “Ouch! Ow, ow, ow! Sakura, what the hell! That hurts.” When she let go of his ear he whimpered rubbing the abused cartilage. “What the fuck did I do now? I haven’t even seen you in 24 hours.” “WHY are you dressed like that?” She was seething. There wasn’t a girl alive that wouldn’t die to wear the Uchiha symbol, to be claimed by the last scion of the clan and here Naruto was making a total mockery of it by prancing around in the perfectly starched shirt. “What?” Looking down Naruto frowned. “Teme lent me some things because I fell asleep at his place. That’s all. I didn’t have the chance to go get clean things. Do I look that bad?” “YES! Yes you do Naruto. What do you think you’re doing? Go and change right now. I’ll tell Kakashi sensei you had to run home. Just go take that off Naruto, you aren’t… god, you can’t wear it.” The pink haired girl crossed her arms, scowling at the little idiot. Sasuke had made his way over to the pair when Sakura’s eyes had bulged at Naruto. She’d looked ready to hit and only he got to whale on the Dobe. “Why?” Sasuke frowned at Sakura stepping around her to stand beside Naruto. “Why can’t he wear it? I gave it to him to wear. It is my crest isn’t it?” Flushing, Sakura looked down suddenly shy, pushing dirt around with the toe of her shoe. “It’s just… Sasuke, he’s a boy and Naruto to boot. I mean, it is your crest but don’t you want someone to wear it with pride? You two are already getting so close.” She spat the last word, obviously bothered by their friendship. “People see him wandering the village in your family symbol and they’re going to talk.” Naruto flushed bright red, all the way to the tips of his ears. “Talk?” “That symbol might not mean anything to you Naruto but to everyone else it a symbol of respect and sacrifice and power. Sasuke, putting it on another person is like claiming them as your own.” She stood straighter. “It shouldn’t be on you.” Swallowing Naruto looked down frowning shaking his head. “Kiba kept saying I’d be a cheap date but really Sakura, you think I’d let anyone… without even buying me dinner first?” Looking Naruto over as soon as Sakura’s words hit home, Sasuke noticed that Naruto was standing taller, standing with pride and he liked how the shirt settled on Naruto. The way the fan was starched over his arm and the fan centered perfectly between his shoulders. Sasuke decided he liked the way his crest looked on Naruto. “Kiba? Why were you and Inuzuka talking about dates?” “Oh right I didn’t get to tell you!” Turning Naruto started bouncing, but that small bouncing where he was trying not to bounce and annoy Sasuke. “Kiba asked me out on a date but not like… wait wait! Teme… like a practice date so he could get the confidence to ask Hinata out. Though why he thinks I know the first thing about what Hinata likes I’ll never understand. But he’s a bud so I told him I would.” Swallowing, Sasuke’s eyes glittered. Everything inside him wanted to find the dog boy and beat him until dating wouldn’t really be an issue. “NARUTO GO CHANGE RIGHT NOW!” Sakura screamed once, intervening again. This was too much for her, being all but ignored unless they were on a mission. The way Naruto looked so damn comfy in Sasuke’s symbol. The way Sasuke had started looking at Naruto was snapping her lines. “Boys do not wear other boy’s family crests. Girls do Naruto. You little freak, GOD girls. Girls Naruto, that’s who wears the crest, the wife who can revitalize the clan. Even if he keeps you on as a butt boy you don’t get to wear it. You’re his not so dirty little secret.” The usually fair skinned girl was flushed a furious red. “You make me… so angry! How can you be so stupid?” Sasuke had been seething over the part with Kiba thinking he could take Naruto out on a date before his brain registered the last bit of what Sakura had said. His face darkened with fury the likes of which she had never seen. In fact, it was the sort of fury only Naruto had seen once a year ago at the waterfall in the Valley of the End. He was done with this entire conversation. Seeing the flinch and then hurt in Naruto’s eyes, Sasuke felt as if he were watching from the outside. His knuckles scrapped against the tree where his hand wrapped around her pale neck when he slammed Sakura’s body into the tree trunk. “I won’t have need for…” He sneered. “… dirty secrets. Should I marry a woman, I assure you it will NOT be you. Nor would I do it without love. There are ways of legitimately reviving my clan without forcing myself to do something as foul as making someone a brood mare.” Sasuke was shaking from his irritation with the stupid girl. Dropping her, he spun on the blond. “And YOU are not going on dates with that mutt.” His finger was right in Naruto’s face, ignoring the sputtering and coughing from behind him. Naruto glared and moved to Sakura, reaching to help her up only to be met with a quick right hook and then a hit to the stomach as the girl got up, knocking the Kyuubi container over and beginning to hit him. “This is your fault! You idiot! Baka-Naruto you don’t even belong here… Sasuke is normal and good and perfect and you’re just an idiot screw up!” She let out a scream of frustration as Kakashi grabbed her, pulling the girl kicking and struggling off her teammate. Sasuke rushed and knelt next to Naruto, looking him over. “Dobe?” His voice caught. There was a vacant look in those blue eyes and his face was bloody and swelling. They knew Kyuubi would heal him eventually. Until then he was going to hurt pretty badly. “Help me get him up Sensei… he should see Lady Tsunade.” The Hokage rarely left his Dobe’s care to anyone else. “Of course.” Kakashi had bound Sakura with chakra ropes so he could help lift the eerily still boy. “Naruto this is going to hurt.” The silver haired Jonin whispered pulling Naruto up and over his back. “Sasuke, you come with me.” He summoned Pakkun, ordering him to stay with Sakura until he sent someone to collect her. The moon was high when Sasuke slipped through the hospital window and looked around, not sensing or seeing anyone else in the room of his friend. Sakura was currently being held for attacking a fellow ninja without provocation. She hadn’t even had wounds other then Sasuke’s finger bruises around her throat. “You didn’t even fight back you fucking Dobe.” Sasuke muttered, unraveling the blanket he’d brought and ensuring it landed lightly over Naruto’s sheets after pulling the hospital blanket away. Then he slid into the bed next to Naruto. The whispered whimper from the young man made Sasuke’s heart clench. Sakura had put plenty of chakra behind her fist and managed to crack Naruto’s cheek and break his nose and jaw. They had been forced to reset his nose and wire his jaw to ensure when Kyuubi healed Naruto it would be right. Sasuke had never wished the Dobe couldn’t speak before and genuinely hoped he never would again. He smiled when Naruto wiggled into the heat and safety of his arms. Relaxing, Sasuke tugged the throw his mother had made him so many years ago complete with not only the Uchiha fan but his name across it up to his chin and let himself finally sleep. He was fairly sure the throw would get his point across and if it didn’t he had plenty of shirts and more could be made. 888 Well I worked on this one for over a week.
