A/N: this is a one-shot for the lovely ImperialMint, written by her request on y!gal: AU, hurt/comfort, ItaNaru. Nothing explicit here, occasional strong language. ... The evening went to hell the moment Naruto stepped his foot into the school gym. Although to be honest, it started two weeks prior that particular evening. The day when he got the blasted invitation by e-mail. He knew he would have been better off sitting at home, watching a movie or simply relaxing, but the curiosity was always a man's enemy. He had always been a social person, despite everything he went through in his 25 years of life. So invitation to a school reunion for the graduates of the last 15 years piqued his interest. He couldn't say he had a lot of people back from school days that had been civil towards him, but he wondered. He wondered how they were doing, who had kids, and, most importantly, if their manner of judging changed somehow with age. So he agreed to come, his hopes high and his smile bright... It had been two hours since he entered the gym and he still could remember the details of the first conversation he had this evening with his ex-classmate, Sakura. "Naruto! Haven't seen you in years! Do you know if Sasuke is coming?" "Hey! No, I don't. We ar~" "Oh...I see. Well, I'll be going then!" He hadn't seen Sakura since graduation - not that he held any interest in her or her personal life - but this less than a minute conversation threw him off. All the following conversations were similar to that first one. He should have known that people only used him because of his close friendship with Uchiha Sasuke - his once best friend. No one knew that the brotherly relationship they had, died a few years after the graduation. Cerulean blue eyes shifted to one of the tables placed in the school gym, where all the commotion took place. In the middle of the crowd, flanked by swooning women and envious men towered the person desired by the whole of Japan for the last 30 years. Dark, tall, incredibly handsome, rich, successful - the genius Uchiha Itachi, the elder brother of Uchiha Sasuke. The main reason for the loss of friendship. Naruto watched as the man gave polite nods to people that tried to converse with him. Everyone had gathered around him, ready to lick his boots just for establishing a contact with him, for being able to say 'I am friends with Uchiha Itachi' to get whatever it was that they wanted. The name alone could make wonders. Being actually seen with Itachi opened many doors and possibilities for a person - the reason why many men would have wagged their tails before the Uchiha, had they had them. Women, on the other hand, found the black-haired man's appeal completely irresistible. They were ready to claw each others' eyes out for a minute or two in Itachi's company. Now, all of the graduates' attention was drawn by a simple golden band on the Uchiha's ring finger. It was elegant and shone in the artificial light so brightly that even Naruto could see it from the corner he had occupied. He snorted, when someone started gushing over the wedding band, trying to draw out the answer to the most important question on the night, it seemed. The blonde man saw as Itachi shook his head, saying something to the woman. Naruto knew well the meaning of the words, since he saw the female's face fall. Those ignorant fools. They all made an expression of a pack of vultures, viewing the Uchiha as their prey, which happened to bee too big and dangerous to approach head on. So they were waiting and watching, noting every single detail about the man. They wanted to know everything for their own personal gain. No one of those standing around Itachi cared for the man sincerely, full-heartedly, selflessly. And those present were just the few out of thousands of all too similar people. Selfish, greedy, egoistic, materialistic and proud. There was rarely more to men of such type. Naruto took a sip of his soda, to stop himself from sighing, blue eyes wandering from the main attraction in the gym. He missed black eyes shifting to his persona, anger flickering briefly in them, before turning back to the crowd. Naruto ruffled his rich blonde hair in anguish, mentally slapping himself for being an idiot. People knew a lot about Uchiha Itachi, however they were never privy to his personal life. None of them knew that, in fact, the dark-haired prodigy was married not to a woman with ample breasts, thin waist and round firm behind; long lush hair, big shiny eyes and small pink mouth, as so many imagined. But to a lean blonde man with tanned skin, facial scars, full lips and slightly slanted bright blue orbs, who sat in the corner of the old school gym, ignored by everyone. None of them knew that Naruto wore the exact copy of Itachi's ring on his finger. None even bothered to look at him and notice the changes he had undergone in the years after school. As he watched his husband converse with people around him tolerating worshipping and hungry stares, and an occasional stray hand that found its way onto his broad shoulder, Naruto scowled. Fucking morons, always blind to everything that bore no profit to them. A few hours before departing to the reunion, Naruto asked Itachi not to tell anyone that they were married, given that no one knew, since the wedding was a private affair in Spain - again, a request of Naruto's. The Uchiha agreed, albeit reluctantly. He never fully understood why his beloved tried to cover up their relationship even though they were deeply in love. Naruto explained once that he asked for this because he had lost Sasuke, the younger Uchiha reacting violently upon learning the news of the two of them getting together, blaming his best friend for corrupting the big brother he worshipped since birth. Still, Itachi couldn't understand why hide their happiness from people, why be afraid of their judgement, but he did as Naruto wished. The blonde couldn't find the right words to explain Itachi that every person that he had come across and forged a bond with was dear to him, for he had no one in his childhood and early teenage days. So losing even one was painful. And being used by the rest always made him feel insignificant. Now he suffered the consequences, for not listening to Itachi. At first, he simply didn't want people at the reunion to know of their marriage, because they would start using him again, as they did back then. But looking now at his husband made him regret his decision. Being all alone and seeing Itachi far away, surrounded by a crowd made a fear of losing Itachi stir in him. The elder Uchiha brother was the only person Naruto wouldn't bear to lose. The blonde clenched his teeth. Was he, Uzumaki Naruto, really that afraid of people? Angry blue eyes zoomed in on the crowd once again. Fucking ass-kissers. Why did he fear what they might say or do? Especially when saying 'fuck off' was so very easy. Wasn't he a man, after all? And a damn fine at that too - he knew that, because Itachi never lied to him. So what was there to be afraid of? If he wanted he could make them step back with a few well placed words. He knew he could. Had all those horrible foster families, orphanages with their hateful workers, aggressive and violent children really gotten to him that much? Well, fuck. He had nothing more to say to that. Right, so his fucked up childhood made him develop a complex of sorts. Now he only had to~ He almost cried out in fury when he saw some woman with a heavy make up brush her fingers over Itachi's neck. Just what the hell did she think she was doing? Hadn't she seen the ring? Naruto couldn't take it anymore. Blue eyes ablaze with anger he stormed out of the gym, al the while reminding himself that it was all his fault to begin with. Black eyes watched as the lean blonde man stomped out the door. Sighing heavily, Itachi cleared his throat. "I am afraid I have to leave you now. Business calls." He didn't care to look at the disappointed faces of the people around him, or shake hands with greedy men, or exchange pleasantries with lusty women. His only goal was to find that overly upset husband of his and soothe his worries. Perhaps, change his mind about hiding their relationship. Seriously, there had never been any logical reason to being afraid of others' opinion or losing someone. Obviously not everyone accepted gay couples, but in that case it proved to be a test for the real friendship. Life was a hard thing with its ups and downs, so meeting an opposition on one's way would only be natural. Gracefully, Itachi left the gym and headed to the person standing near his car, their back turned to him. The Uchiha crept closer and stopped just inched from the body he so loved. The blonde before him shivered as Itachi's breath ghosted over his neck. "Why are you here, Naruto?" "I got tired of watching those bastards trying to kiss your ass." "Really now? How about telling me the truth?" Naruto was tempted to lean back on the tall man behind him, nearly forgetting where they were. As strong hands came to rest on his shoulders he wanted to protest. But finally having his husband near and touching him, calmed his nerves. "You know, I did a thorough self-research and found out that you have married a total fuck-up." "Oh?" Itachi's forehead rested on the blonde spikes, the gesture comforting both of them. "Yeah. It's not normal for a person to be afraid of people, but I am. And I figured I have been for a long time." Hands on his shoulders tightened their hold, the dark-haired man fully aware of his beloved's past. "It's normal to be afraid. People are hateful, greedy and vengeful creatures. They are never satisfied with what they have; they are afraid of things they don't understand; and they do things that an animal would find disgusting and all for petty reasons. But you are not alone now. I suggest we go home where I can soothe your worries." The blonde turned his head to the side and grinned at Itachi, once again having problems believing that such a wonderful man had chosen him above everyone else. "I like the idea. And I think it's time for me to stop being whiny. Next time we are invited to a meeting like this, I'll be kissing you publicly." The Uchiha chuckled, bending and kissing Naruto on the nose, black eyes shining with mirth. "Why wait? As far as I remember the evening is not ever yet." "Hahaha very funny, ´Tachi." As Itachi grabbed both tanned hands in his and dragged a reluctant blonde back into the gym, finally relieved that Naruto would let him show to those around whom he belonged to, the Uzumaki started paling. "You're not kidding, are you? Shit! I said next time!" "There may not be a next time. Now come on, let them choke on their tongues." "But Itachi. No~" As his husband proceeded to drag him into the gym, Naruto thought that maybe it wasn't so bad. If kissing Itachi in front of hateful glares and faces green with envy meant being closer to him at all times, then so be it. He would just kiss his man longer to ignore them.
