Thank you for reading and Enjoy! Calling You Chapter 1 When Naruto finally left Vegas, he just drove. He ended up in San Francisco by some divine intervention or not so divine if the cost of living was to be believed, but it was a place to live. Anything was better than going back. He’d gotten a job right away at a small coffee shop, and was lucky enough to find a place cheap enough to live while he was at it. He lived with two single Japanese men he’d met while wandering through Japantown. Shikamaru had just been hanging around looking up at the clouds when he’d run into him, literally. He’d apologized several times before they’d started talking and soon he was moving his two small bags from his car to a small apartment over a tea house. He’d started working at the coffee house as well as a dish washer in a restaurant at first, but found that he was cute enough to get decent tips from pouring coffee so he stuck to the one. His time outside of work had been spent mostly recovering from the shock of being on his own, and getting to know his roommates. Kiba was interesting and they had a lot in common, but Naruto spent most of his time hanging out with Shikamaru. Naruto talked mostly and he listened. It was a good arrangement for both of them. Ends were met, and he even had some cash to spare sometimes to go to a movie or eat something besides his new favorite food, ramen. He spent some time walking around a little, but he felt so different and separate from the people of San Francisco that he didn’t do it as much as he would probably have liked. Naruto was just grateful that he was on his own. He’d had enough of being treated like a bastard all his life and here, he was just Naruto, and for the first time in his life he was starting to like himself. He’d worked in the coffee shop about four months when he’d seen the young and very well dressed man walk through the doors of the shop. He ordered green tea, very hot, no sugar or lemon, with a very strong Japanese accent and sat in the far corner of the shop for half an hour. It was evening, and business was slow enough that Naruto had noticed right away how those striking black eyes had never left him once. It was strange at first. After that first day the man came in every day at around the same time. He ordered the same thing, and sat in the same seat when it was available. After a while though, Naruto got used to the attention. He’d talked to Sakura, one of the girls that he worked with, and she’d told him that the young man came in on Naruto’s day off too, but never stayed long. She’d seemed sad and slightly irritated at having to admit it, but Naruto paid her no mind. She had enough customers flirting with her that Naruto didn’t think she had the right to feel jealous about the few that didn’t. After a week had passed, Naruto started to blush when he came in. He stayed longer and longer each time, and still his eyes never left the blonde. Naruto would peak at him through his hair, but he would always get caught. He’d blush even brighter then, and sometimes he thought he might have seen a smirk on that handsome face, though he convinced himself later that he must have been seeing things because there was no way that anyone that looked that good could possibly take notice of him. ooOOoo When Christmas came around he enjoyed the increase in tips, but the extra hours were killing him. He’d worked seventeen days in a row without a day off, and he was desperate for a day to himself. He’d noticed that the young man had stayed until nearly closing. The tables were all empty, and Naruto was starting to clean up and get ready to go when something shiny caught his attention at that small table in the corner. He walked over thinking it was something for the lost box, but when he got closer it was a present wrapped in green wrapping paper with a bright red ribbon and a card with his name printed on the front. He was afraid to touch it at first. He hadn’t gotten a Christmas gift, any gift for that matter, in years. The box was small, about the size of a coffee cup gift box, and Naruto felt so ridiculous for letting something so small bring back all those insecurities, but it did. He couldn’t help it. He sat at the table, laid his rag down beside the box, and just looked at it. He didn’t notice how much time had passed, but he knew that it must have been ages before he worked up the nerve to touch it. At first he just ran his fingers over the thin ribbon and paper. They were beautiful and elegant. The ends of the paper made a strange diagonal pattern on the outside though, and he thought it was strange that there didn’t seem to be any tape on the box at all. He reached for the card slowly and opened it careful not to tear the envelope. The card merely said Merry Christmas. It was a plain white card, and whoever gave it to him hadn’t signed it. He knew though, who it was from, he just didn’t know his name. It seemed that he wasn’t going to find out any time soon either, but it didn’t bother him. He knew those eyes, how they felt on him, warm and intimate, and how cold he felt when they were gone. The ribbon had one end sticking out as if to say ‘pull me’ and so Naruto set the card down and tugged the ribbon off slowly. It fell open softly and the paper pealed back as well to reveal a plain white box with no markings on it of any kind. Curiosity was getting to him now, and he forgot to be careful when he pulled the box open to see what was inside. Of course there was a bundle of tissue paper, but in the middle was small black velvet jewelry box. His hands were shaking when he opened it. There in the center was a small gold coin with a jade green stone in the center. It was attached to a black satin rope with a clasp that was too long for a bracelet but perfect to go around his neck. He’d never had a necklace before and he was instantly in love with it. It was masculine and classy, at least from what he could tell, it was. He tried to put it on, but the clasp kept slipping. He slid it back in the velvet box and put it in his pocket for later and decided that it would probably be good to finish up and head home. He didn’t want his roommates to worry on the day before Christmas Eve. They were going shopping tomorrow together, and Kiba had said he wanted to get an early start, so with that he cleaned everything up and locked the doors. He shut the lights out, and slipped out the back to his car not bothering with a coat since it was so close, but regretting it when he sat in his freezing car for two minutes before the heater kicked in. When he got home he pulled out the pendant and stood in the bathroom in front of the mirror for ten minutes before he got it on. He looked at his reflection and admired his first valuable possession and wondered if it was worth anything or if it was just a trinket from one of the tourist shops in town. He didn’t have to wait to find out though. When he opened the door to go to bed Shikamaru was standing there leaning against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest. His eyes went immediately to the pendant. He stepped forward and lifted it gently to get a better look and his mouth hung open slightly as he turned it over. “Where did you get this?” Naruto looked down at it and then back up at Shikamaru. “It was a gift from one of my customers. ” Shikamaru let the pendant fall from his hand and stepped back, his posture strangely stiff. “Who?” Naruto blushed then. “I don’t know his name. He’s been coming in for a few months. He’s quiet. ” “Naruto, this is a very expensive gift from someone you don’t even know. Are you sure it’s a good idea to accept something like this from a stranger?” Naruto looked to the floor then. He felt ashamed for being so stupid, of course he shouldn’t keep it, but it was so nice to get a present and he liked it. “You’re right, I shouldn’t have kept it. I’ll give it back when I see him again.” Naruto reached up to take it off, but it seemed just as hard to take off as it was to get on, and he started to struggle. Shikamaru reached up to still his hands and then lifted his chin so Naruto would have to look at him. “I didn’t say you shouldn’t keep it, I just don’t want you to get into a difficult situation by accepting gifts. If you like him, then you should keep it. ” “I don’t even know his name…” Shikamaru smiled and tried to be comforting to Naruto. They’d talked enough that he could tell Naruto had been abused most of his life. He was extremely insecure, but covered it well with a smile and a laugh. It was obvious though if you looked in his eyes that he took in every hurt and held it deep inside letting it eat away at him. “What does he look like?” Naruto blushed again and his eyes lit up. Shikamaru liked that look, it wasn’t false happiness, but the real thing. “He’s got floppy black hair and black eyes. He looks very Japanese, and I’m not even sure that he speaks English. He’s a couple of inches taller than me and he dresses very nice.” Shikamaru wanted to smack himself in the head. He didn’t want to know what he guy looked like, he wanted to know what Naruto thought about how he looked. He could tell from the way Naruto spoke that they guy was probably very good looking, but he wanted to hear it. He wanted Naruto to admit it out loud. He’d learned quickly that if Naruto didn’t say it then he could still disregard it. If he actually said the guy was attractive then he’d have to admit to himself that he liked him. Otherwise Naruto would talk himself out of it and that would hurt him, and Shikamaru hated to see Naruto hurt. “I don’t care what he looks like Naruto. I want to know what you think of how he looks.” Naruto’s eyes narrowed. He didn’t like being put on the spot like this. “He’s beautiful…” He gritted out, blushing even more furiously. He wanted to be irritated at Shikamaru for making him say it, but the amused look on his friends face calmed him. There was no mocking or jeering, and Naruto thanked all the deities again for leading him to such a good friend. “So… a beautiful Japanese man gave you a very expensive antique luck coin pendant for Christmas and you don’t even know his name. Obviously he’s interested. I’m sure he speaks at least a little English if not a lot. An accent doesn’t equal illiterate.” Shikamaru pointed at himself as an example and Naruto rolled his eyes and grinned. “Talk to him next time he comes in. Just say thank you for the gift. I’m sure he’ll take it from there.” Naruto nodded and looked shy again. “Thanks Shika.” “No problem kid. Just be yourself. He’s already made it easy for you.” Blue eyes lit up, and the blush that had begun to fade was back in full force. He looked curious suddenly and Shikamaru waited for the question. “Have you ever heard of a present wrapped without any tape? It was folded really neat and the ribbon held it together.” “Yeah, it’s a Japanese technique called Tsutsumi. It can be with paper or cloth. It’s traditional in Japan to make the outside just as important as the gift itself. They have several gift shops that offer it as a service if you buy a gift there. I don’t think that’s what he did though. That pendant isn’t from any of the shops I’ve been too. That was probably bought in Japan. I wouldn’t suggest wearing it on the outside of your cloths either. Most everyone around here knows what it is and what its worth. Just tuck it in your shirt when you go out.” Naruto nodded and picked it up again to look down at the coin. “Thanks Shika. I’m gonna head to bed since we’re getting up early tomorrow. Do you have any idea where Kiba wants to go?” “Nah. I think he just wants to wander around until he finds something for Hinata. He’s waited ‘til the last minute to get her something, but I think he wants to play it off like he looked for months before he actually found the right present. I told him to just get her a pearl and be done with it, but he didn’t want to do that. I’ll wake you in the morning, okay?” Naruto looked up again and nodded. He pulled Shikamaru into a hug before wondering down to his room. Shikamaru just shook his head and smiled. He’d never known anyone like Naruto before, and he was glad to have found him. After all, he knew Naruto was one in a million. He only hoped this guy didn’t hurt Naruto because he’d be the one picking up the pieces, but mostly he hated disposing of bodies. It was so troublesome. ooOOoo Christmas came and went. Boxing Day was a nightmare. Everyone needed coffee, and the shop had been packed from open to close. Naruto hadn’t had the chance to notice until the end of the day that he hadn’t come. It was a whole two weeks before Naruto saw those dark eyes again. He was a little irritated at having to wait so long, but his excitement was so overwhelming that it was pushed out of his mind the instant he heard “green tea” spoken in that low accented voice that sent shivers through him every time he heard it. He was drowning in those endless eyes when he was shocked out of his revelry by Sakura thumping him in the head. “Get him his tea idiot.” She said before walking back to the other counter. Naruto turned to look at her so he missed the glare those dark eyes directed at the pink haired girl. He prepared the cup quickly and handed it over only to freeze again when he looked back up. Their eyes locked on each other, blocking out the world around them. “Arigatou.” Drifted into his mind and then he was free when the man looked down at the pendant hanging around his neck. Naruto reached up to touch it and those endless eyes returned to his. “It was from you wasn’t it?” Naruto asked quietly. A sharp nod was his answer. “Thank you. It’s beautiful…” He looked down at it and ran his thumb over the smooth surface of the stone. “Dō itashi mashite” Naruto didn’t know what that meant, but it sounded nice. “I don’t understand.” Naruto stuttered out. The man just smiled, set his money on the counter. As he started to turn Naruto blurted out, “What’s your name…” The man turned just enough to show he was smiling and said, “Sasuke.” It was nothing more than a whisper but it echoed in Naruto’s mind. Sasuke… Sasuke… Sasuke… That night he lay in bed awake wondering how Shikamaru could have been wrong. He’d never been wrong before about anything if the rumors were to be believed, but he was. Sasuke hadn’t taken the opportunity to talk to him, he just went to his usual seat and watched Naruto for a long time before leaving as quietly as he came. Naruto had wanted so badly to talk to him. He wanted to know Sasuke, but now it was even more awkward. What was he going to do tomorrow when he came in again? It took hours for Naruto to drift off to sleep only to dream of drowning in jet eyes. ooOOoo It was inventory day and it was Naruto’s turn to spend all day in the back room counting boxes of supplies and making a list of what needed replacing. He’d been back there for three hours digging through a dark corner of dusty boxes that seemed to be filled with cups that had been forgotten. They had an older design that he’d never seen before, but they were still good so he left a note on his list to talk to Kakashi about it when he heard the door open and close quietly behind him. Sakura wasn’t usually quiet or considerate so Naruto peaked around the stacks of supplies to see who it was when he saw him. Sasuke was walking casually toward him as if he hadn’t even noticed the ‘Employee’s Only’ sign on the door. Naruto had thought to say something about it, but before he could get a word out Sasuke pulled him close, one hand on his waist and the other in his hair and then they were kissing. It was Naruto’s first ever real kiss, and he was stunned for a second, but when he felt his back hit the wall it seemed to shock him back to the moment and he let himself be kissed fully. Naruto moaned softly and felt Sasuke’s tongue slip into his mouth. His hands slipped under the soft sweater that Sasuke was wearing to touch warm skin. He pulled the man closer to him. When Sasuke pulled away they were both panting and flushed. Naruto could feel Sasuke’s heart pounding against his and those eyes were practically glowing in the low light. “Kyoutendouchi.” Sasuke whispered against his lips and Naruto didn’t know what that word meant, but he definitely agreed. “Yeah…” Naruto closed his eyes when the hand in his hair moved over his cheek and down his neck. Sasuke’s lips followed the path his hand had made. He sucked and licked just above Naruto’s collar until Naruto was certain there was a noticeable mark. Naruto’s hands moved slowly over smooth skin exploring the dips and curves of Sasuke’s back until he pulled away. He straightened his sweater ran his hand lightly over Naruto’s chest before turning and walking toward the door. He turned back when he opened the door and whispered, “mata ashita” and disappeared through the door as if he’d never been there. After a few minutes of thinking about it, Naruto wasn’t even sure it had really happened at all. He finally finished inventory just before closing and left his notes on Kakashi’s desk before slipping out the back door. He was eternally grateful that Sakura hadn’t notice him leave. He pulled out into the street and headed home knowing that she’d be very angry about having to close by herself, but he was tired of doing her job for her, and he had too much on his mind to worry about it. ooOOoo Shikamaru and Kiba were watching a movie in the living room when he came through the door. He’d driven around for an hour trying to clear his head, but he was still confused. He flopped down in the recliner in the corner and looked to see what was on. They were watching Dr. Who again. Kiba liked the aliens and the bad jokes, Shikamaru liked to pick apart the logic of each and every scientific aspect of the show. It was fun watching it with them argue over the probability of time travel and space travel in a phone booth. Naruto liked listening to them. They both knew so much more than he did. They were both in college, Shikamaru at Stanford and Kiba at USF. Shikamaru was a genius and only actually went to school; Naruto had never seen the man study… ever. Kiba studied enough to pass, and was happy with that. They were both native to the city, and the apartment belonged to Kiba’s grandmother. She owned the tea house down stairs and let them stay for a very low rent as long as all three of them were available to help her when she needed it. She was a tiny lady that Naruto liked very much, and the most she ever asked for was that they get something for her off the top shelf or keep her company. Naruto understood loneliness all too well and knew it when he saw it so he never begrudged her his time. He sat there with them thinking about how grateful he was to have found them when Shikamaru asked him what was wrong. “He kissed me today…” Naruto said quietly, not having the nerve to meet either of their eyes. Kiba, of course was the first to react. “You kissed a guy!” Shikamaru quirked an eyebrow at him. “Yes, Kiba. Naruto is gay, I don’t know how you could have missed it after living in San Francisco your whole life.” Kiba huffed and pouted, and Shikamaru turned to Naruto. “Do you at least know his name now?” Naruto nodded. “He told me a few days ago.” Shikamaru sighed loudly and rolled his eyes. “Well… what is it?” “Sasuke.” Shikamaru’s eyes narrowed slightly, but he schooled his face fast enough that Naruto didn’t notice. Naruto had a love bit on his neck so it had been more than just a peck. Naruto seemed to be really taken with this Sasuke. “What else happened? He marked you, that’s a clear sign that you are strictly ‘hands off’. Did you talk?” Naruto got a sour look on his face. He seemed frustrated. “After he kissed me he said something like key you ten something. It wasn’t English, but I know he knows I don’t understand. I know he understands me so why doesn’t he speak English?” Shikamaru thought for a moment. “Was it Kyoutendouchi?” Naruto nodded and looked hopeful. Shikamaru smiled for Naruto’s sake. He could lie, but he wouldn’t do that to Naruto. He didn’t like the games this guy was playing, but Naruto didn’t seem to mind so he decided to stay out of it. “It means ‘amazing.’ It’s a very strong word, he must like you very much.” Naruto blushed attractively, and Shikamaru felt jealousy zing up his spine for a second. “As for why he refuses to speak something that you understand… I don’t know.” Naruto nodded and smiled. “Thanks Shika.” They sat and watched TV for a couple of hours and talked about other things that had been going on. Naruto turned in around midnight. It would be the last descent nights sleep he’d be getting for a while. It's cliche... I know, but I happen to like cliche! Please leave feedback.
