Gaara’s pov
‘They say everyone in the world has a monster hidden deep inside them. It is a creation of man but at the same time a phenomenon of nature. However the monster that dwells within this body is all to real. It’s power is immense and I can’t help but wonder if I will always have control over it. I feel it slipping and I know that one day, it will win the war. I am a monster, but I’m not. It feeds off other’s pain while I try to hide and pretend it doesn’t exist, but in the end who am I kidding….’
Inari wrote that at the beginning of her first novel of the series. Of course Gaara couldn’t fully say that the woman was a woman but the name just sounded so feminine he couldn’t help but assume that it was a girl who wrote such a thing. This was the first chapter of the first book and he’d read it many times over. The second novel wasn’t due for another month and he passed the time by reading this one. The words spoken by Inari were so true and he couldn’t help but identify with every one. Sometimes he felt that he too had a monster inside. He feared it and many nights he didn’t get to sleep because he was sure it would take over. However this was more or less all in his head because of the treatment of one solitary man who well hated him. Gratefully enough, there were a couple hundred thousand miles between him and that man. Gaara lived under the supervision of his elder siblings. Temari being the one who paid for everything and acted more as the parent and his brother Kankuro was the one who got him out of tight spots every so often. But Gaara, he was still a bit younger than them and there for he still had school, oh joyas day.
He shut his book and slowly stood. He was already dressed, had been for hours because of his insomnia. His sister was bustling about the kitchen getting ready for work and his brother was no likely still in bed. He made a small “humph” sound as he passed her. This was more or less a good bye and see you later kind of thing only Gaara wasn’t much of a talkative person. He preferred to live in his books, away from society. That’s how he’d managed to survive his uncle’s abuse and a bit of him was still wary of that man walking in the front door. Speaking of said door, he reached it, flung the thing open and stepped out, shutting it almost soundlessly behind him. As the lock clicked he heard his sister’s farewells, and left his house.
The walk to school was a pleasant one. The sky was cloudy and despite the cold like atmosphere, it was rather warm outside. The occasional cold wind would blow by and cause the pale boy’s arms to tighten around his book in hopes that the book itself had the power to keep him warm. But all was forgotten as his eyes landed on the place of his incarceration. Kohona High. He missed his old school, but it was school or well his life and he wanted to live, even though the “monster” inside him was ample enough reason to want to die. He just wasn’t ready for that yet.
The redhead weaved through the crowd of chattering students, going unnoticed by few and earning a few scared looks from others. No one knew what to think of the quiet yet frightening looking boy. There were rumors that looking him in the eye could send you into a coma, or that walking in his path would be your down fall. He was a strange boy and because he never spoke to change their stories, there was no telling what was truth and what was fictional. In the end Gaara kind of liked it that way. It meant less people messed with him and that was fine with him.
He had a circle of friends, though he wasn’t sure what they thought of him as he didn’t speak much. In fact it was a rather noisy blond that pulled him into said group of friends. It was nice but at the same time he just wanted to be left alone. The group consisted of many boys, who all seemed to be a bit out of wack, either too gloomy or like the boy with the huge eyebrows, way to spunky. This extended to the girls of the group as well, from the quiet and shy Hinata girl to the out burst queen Ino. But maybe that was what made them a strange group. Everyone was involved and no one was turned away. The best thing was, a few others in the group read the same books as he did so the conversations, while not joined in, were nice to listen to.
What ever it was that kept him from leaving the group, he didn’t mind the company all that much in the end. The raccoon eyed male made his way to class and set this things down. Then with a slight sigh he folded his arms and began to nap on his desk to await the day’s end.
Naruto’s pov
“fallen still the…” letters were crossed out and figures rearranged. Then before he knew it the white haired man was leaning back in his chair to avoid being hit in the head with a piece of flying paper. At a desk sat a very blond boy, his skin nicely bronzed, and his ocean blue eyes stared down at the blank paper before him as one of those hands dug deeply into the blond tussles of hair. There was much incoherent babbling before the blond threw another paper missing the older man by mere inches.
“Naruto if you sit there much longer you’re going to be late for school” the older man informed the boy . He leaned back further in his chair and flipped the page of the newspaper he’d been reading. His eyes scanned the paper like he was interested, when in all reality he was waiting for Naruto to leave so he could go do some research for his nest story. He’d raised Naruto sense his father died so long ago and while he was practically a father to the kid, he refused to be called such by said kid. They had a strange relationship but for all intensive purposes he was his guardian till he was old enough to live on his own. Once the words hit the boy he flung himself out of his chair and turned to glare at the man.
“You should have told me! I can’t be late again that Old woman will have my head.” He grabbed his jacket and a few things before rushing past the older man and “accidentally” kicking the back leg which was supporting the chair by itself. “get your head out of the clouds you porno writer.” he chuckled before grabbing a piece of bread, which he shoved between his lips, and heading out the door.
From the floor Jiraiya sighed and shook his head, though a smile graved his lips. “Romance, I prefer you call it romance.” But the boy was gone and the argument lost till he returned. He climbed out of the chair and stood up, gathering the pieces of paper about the room and tossing them into the trash bin. He knew what Naruto’s problem was. One, he promised anther book to his editor and two he had no inspiration for the book so how was he going to do one? To keep the boy safe he wrote his books under a pen name and Naruto didn’t mind no one knowing his hidden talent, but sometimes that ate away at his mind and well being a writer himself he know how bad that could be for the boy. He moved to the window and watched the blond head recede into the distance and then turn the corner. With mischief on his mind, the older man turned and made his own exit for some well deserved “research”.
Don’t get him wrong by any means. Naruto loved to brag. He loved attention and most of all he loved his books. But he didn’t want people to like him for what he had. He wanted them to get to know him as him and not some rich boy. Of course people use to look down on him for the longest time, blaming him for the death of his own father but he was just a baby and well how could he have killed the man? Over the years he had managed to break down the social barriers and make lots of friends but he still wasn’t completely happy. Something was missing in his life and he had yet to discover it. Through his stories he could live another life. He could be anyone and anything and do everything. It was something he lacked in his real life. This was why his stories connected so well with the people who read them. He connected on a interpersonal level and that made him both happy and sad. Sad because he would never be able to interact face to face with these people who loved his stories so much. That was about around the time he met Gaara. The redhead who always had one of his books tucked under his arm. It was strange to him that most of the time the pale boy carried around one of his older works. ‘The creature within’ was a story he’d created to get rid of all the negative energy created by the hatred of those around him. He poured his soul into that story because he wanted to be loved and that monster that everyone saw in him, it took new life. As he entered his class, he saw that it was about the same today. Tucked under a sleeping redhead’s arms was that very book. There had to be more to Gaara than met the eye.
He opened his mouth to speak to the boy but the bell rang and he slipped into his chair not wanting to get in trouble once again for being late. The teacher walked in and the class began. Naruto doodled on a page, Gaara and Shikamaru slept, Choji ate chips and the day was normal…till lunch came.
Normal povThe argument was fierce. Ino and Sakura were fighting each other over the table, screaming at one another about who was right and suck. Lee, the nice guy he was trying to calm the two girls down and in the process got smacked down by both of them. Naruto rubbed the back of his head and laughed “guys guys. Come on what is it about today?” both girls stopped and looked at him with daggers.“Do you think Inari is a girl or a boy?” they both asked in unison. Shikamaru sighed and rubbed his temples. While some of the others just looked away. In the corner, however, Gaara was leaning forward. He wanted to hear this conversation. He’d always assumed she was a girl and there for it was safe for him to have a crush on her. He was curious to hear what Naruto thought. The blond looked to each of the girl’s faces then over at Neji who was looking away uninterested. His gaze shifted to those around him and he gave a serious look as if to say he knew exactly what was going on. Because of this look, he gained all the interest of the table around him and people held their breath as he opened his mouth to speak.
“That’s easy” he began with a laugh as he raised one finger “Inari is both!” there he said it. A few of the guys sweat dropped and Neji fell over backwards trying to hide the fact that he was interested as well. They all knew that Naruto’s Adoptive father was a writer so that he had to have some kind of incite on who was who in the world. But this was proved wrong as that idiotic sentence left his mouth and both Ino and Sakura hit the boy. He sighed and sat down rubbing his now read cheeks “hey you asked my opinion, think about it.”
Gaara was a bit disappointed but at the same time relieved. He didn’t know the answer but neither did the rest of them. He leaned back and went to staring off in space. In fact no one but Narito himself noticed the interest that had been shown by Gaara and a new idea flashed into his head. “Guys I’m heading home early” Naruto announced. He stood, packed up his things and left, leaving behind a half filled cup of instant soup. That wasn’t like Naruto, so they all knew it had to be important. But what?
Gaara waited a few more minutes before he to left, silently and unnoticed by mostly everyone. He found his way to the hall and looked both ways but the blond was nowhere to be found. He turned away and went back to the lunch area where he was left to contemplate the severity of his situation.
Naruto on the other hand had made his escape into the boy’s room. Placing an ‘out of order’ sign on the stall door, he locked himself inside and pulled up his legs so that no one would know where he was. From here he flipped open his notebook and began to scribble down the thoughts of the day in hopes of narrowing down the inspiration for the second book.-----------------------------------------------------------------------
