Well. This is my first attempt at a
yaoi and challenge fic. Wish me luck.
Summary:
College. For any normal teen it's the beginning of
freedom, experimentation and, with some luck, a bright
future. But Sasuke isn't interested in anything bright or
experimental and, as far as he's concerned, nothing is free.
Waylaid by his older brother, the youngest son of a famous
police family is forced to enter OtoU and live amongst the
student body. But a semester fraught with fear and
trepidation soon turns into a quest for answers as he finds a
dorm full of secrets and a roommate with baggage of his own.

“Do you have
enough towels?”
Sasuke pulled the
small drawer at the base of the bed open and placed the solid black,
neatly folded bath towels inside. “Yes, brother.”
Itachi shifted
inside the door to his little brothers college dorm room. “Extra
sheets?”
The drawer closed
with a little more force than necessary. “Yes, brother.”
He was watching
him from the corner of his eye. Itachi was sure of it. He was using
all that dark hair to hide a sharp, angry gaze.
“It's only
for one semester.” The chipped laminate desk on the left side
of the room shuddered as a box was forcibly dropped on it.
“Sasuke...”
“It's fine,
brother.” But it was obvious it wasn't as another box was
slammed onto the battered desk.
Silence stretched
for several minutes as Sasuke began unpacking shirts from one of the
boxes resting open on his single bed. Itachi grimaced at the deep
indention made in the cheap mattress by such small moving boxes.
Sasuke's back was going to hurt for weeks until he grew accustom to
it.
“You know
Mom and Dad are just worried.” Sasuke's lips thinned while he
ignored the excuse he'd heard too many times before. “You
never left your room.” Itachi continued as a shirt settled less
than perfectly folded on the bed before tumbling to the floor. “Haku
is not an acceptable replacement for real friends.”
Itachi moved into
the room and settled as comfortably as possible on the end of the bed
while his little brother attempted to ignore him. Another horribly
wrinkled shirt dropped to the floor at his feet and he lifted it,
folding it neatly before placing it on the bed. “You need
this, Sasuke.”
Several minutes
and a couple of poorly folded shirts passed before the bed dipped a
little and Itachi turned to watch those dark bangs covering his
brothers eyes.
“I won't be
able to study with someone always watching me.” Sasuke's voice
sounded, low and nearly inaudible.
“Then you go
to the library or one of the conference rooms to study.” His
little brother's shoulders hunched a little but his mouth grew tight
with suppressed frustration. “No one's asking you to go out
and mingle. We don't expect you to simply be sociable. But you
can't hide in your room forever.”
When Sasuke didn't
reply, simply continued to sit and most likely glare at the floor,
Itachi stood and began unpacking one of the boxes at the desk. “One
semester, Sasuke.” The box was filled with old notebooks and
project graphs. He lifted one dated three years prior and placed it
on the desk. “I swear to you, after one semester, if you can't
handle it we'll get you an apartment off campus. Just...”
Sasuke's shoulders
straightened as he turned and opened his mouth, but the words died
when a high pitched squeal pierced the air and the door to the room
flew open to bang loudly against the wall.
“Oh damn!
Sorry, Naruto. Sometimes I don't know my own strength...”
She has pink
hair. It was the first thought in Itachi's head. It was
followed closely by more piercings than a pin cushion
and I'll bet that tattoo on her neck really hurt.
He spared Sasuke a glance and was pretty sure the horror in his eyes
had something to do with the possibility this girl might actually be
his roommate. He could assure him she wasn't and was about to do
just that when she spoke.
“Who are you?”
The question pulled Itachi from his impromptu moment of brotherly
affection and he put on a very tiny smile. The girl with the
bubblegum pink hair was staring at the boxes on the desk and bed with
open annoyance.
“I'm sorry, we're just moving my brothers things in. I'm...”
but he didn't get to finish his sentence.
“Naruto has a private room. He's had a private room for two
years.” She looked around the opposite side of the room for a
moment growing more and more frustrated when what she was apparently
looking for didn't appear. “Did Naruto change dorms?”
“Well actually, about that...”
But the girl backed to the hall and disappeared around it, yelling as
she walked. “Hey, Kabuto! Who're the emo brothers in Naruto's
room?!”
Itachi
gritted his teeth. I can not kill the students. I can not
kill the students. There was a
visible tick in Sasuke's left eye but he quietly turned and began
repacking the box of shirts. Itachi reached for his arm. “No.
You are not repacking. You promised you would try.”
Sasuke turned a withering glare on him but his voice was far more
sedate. “I'll just find another room. I'm not backing out on
my word.”
Itachi shook his head and pulled the box away from the boy's fisted
hands. “This room is fine. The boy who rooms here knows about
you. I spoke to the coordinator myself.” He spared a glare at
the now empty door way and started pulling things from another box on
the bed. “Besides, room assignments have already been made.
You would need to go through the Housing committee to change rooms.”
Sasuke looked less than thrilled and Itachi cursed idiot college
students everywhere. It had taken a near act of congress to coerce
his little brother into staying in the dorms. Their parents were so
worried they'd nearly called in the doctors again. Considering how
pointless it had been the first time he didn't see the need for them
to waste the money. Cops didn't make a lot to begin with. Instead,
the family had sat down one Saturday night and talked about it.
They'd discussed Sasuke's fears, though he refused to admit that's
what they were and was most likely holding out on a few, and how best
to overcome them. Clinically there was nothing wrong with him and
Sasuke knew that, but the fear seemed rooted since junior high and
the family was at a loss to help. In the end they compromised. He
would try living in the dorms for one semester and they would abide
by his decision if he chose not to return. Sasuke had gained a “no
questions asked” clause. Itachi thought it was a bad idea but
their parents had gone along with it. They felt they could come by
the truth another way. He had his doubts. They may be great
detectives but in six years they hadn't figured out what caused the
odd behavior and he doubted they could do it now that so much time
had passed. Still, Sasuke was here and he'd promised to try.
“Excuse me?”
The brothers turned as one and faced the profile of the new visitor
currently staring at the open door. His gray-white hair lay in a
small pony tail at the back of his neck and as he turned to face
them, his wire-rimmed glasses caught the light and hid his eyes
behind a white glare.
“Would one of you be Sasuke Uchiha?”
Itachi didn't like the fact he couldn't see the man's eyes. He liked
even less the way Sasuke's name sounded like silk on skin when he
spoke it.
“This is Sasuke.” He gestured to his too still brother.
“I'm his older brother, Itachi.”
Apparently the threat he was attempting to convey fell on deaf ears.
The guy never stopped smiling. But then, he was wearing an RA tag
now that Itachi looked and he tried to relax and tell himself the man
was just being friendly, if a bit creepy, to the new kid.
“Wonderful! Welcome to Liberty Hall, Sasuke. My name is
Kabuto,” He pointed out his name tag, “If you have any
questions I'm at the end of the hall, though I'm sure Naruto will
have most of the answers for you. We will have a hall meeting on
Tuesday to go over the rules. There is a print out on your desk if
you'd like to go over it before hand.”
Sasuke simply nodded his head but didn't immediately turn away to
finish unpacking. Itachi inwardly cheered. Progress already and
they hadn't been here an hour. Then his little brother's skin paled
and his breathing shallowed as the pink haired bitch from before
strolled up behind their current visitor; irritation set in every
line of her body.
And what a body it is, Itachi thought belatedly as he got a
good look at the rest of her. The hip hugging cargo pants and
midriff bearing, camouflage tank top left a lot of creamy skin on
display. The pink hair actually complemented her complexion and her
bright green eyes only highlighted the affect. She could use a
little fashion consulting but he had to admit there was something
sexy about a woman in combat boots.
“Kabuto! What the hell!?”
She just had to
open her mouth. The elder
brother sighed and placed a comforting hand on Sasuke's shoulder.
The boy was tense with irrational fear of possible confrontation and
on the verge of a panic attack. This was not how Itachi had hoped to
start the day.
“Ah, Sakura.” The RA turned toward the intruder and
Itachi got a glimpse of cool gray eyes. “Meet Sasuke Uchiha.
Sasuke? This is Sakura Haruno. She lives on the opposite side of
the hall.” Kabuto tapped a finger to the open door at eye
level. “As you can see, Sakura my dear, Sasuke is Naruto's new
roommate.”
Sakura turned her glare from Kabuto to his pointed finger and Itachi
watched in amusement as her face transformed from flushed anger to
equally flushed embarrassment. Her jaw worked a few times but no
sound emerged and the eyes she turned back to he and his brother were
full of apology and mortification though the anger never really left.
“Next time you feel the need to interrupt my studies over room
assignments, try checking the nameplates first. Have a nice day.”
He turned a careless smile on Itachi. “It was a pleasure to
meet the two of you.” And after looking over the brothers once
more, he backed into the hall with a half wave and disappeared from
sight.
Sakura, the pink haired brand-new bane of Itachi's existence, groaned
and slapped a open palmed hand to her broad forehead before glancing
at the brothers. “Naruto is going to kill me.”
She did look a little remorseful and in the interest of diplomacy,
Itachi took pity on her. “I somehow doubt that.” He
stepped forward and offered a hand. “Shall we try again?”
Sakura ran her hand over her face before sighing and dropping it.
She turned with a smile only slightly wilted by guilt and offered her
own hand. “Hi. I'm Sakura Haruno. I live on the other side
of the hall.”
Itachi let the tips of his lips quirk just a little and made a quick
study of the fox tattoo running down the side and around to the back
of her neck. “Itachi Uchiha. This is my brother, Sasuke.”
Both of them turned only to find Sasuke, once again, occupied with
his unpacking. All of his movements stiff and hurried.
Sensing the beginnings of a very uncomfortable situation Itachi
glanced back at their current visitor and lifted a hand to her neck.
She jerked at the touch but quickly recovered. “This is nice.
How far does it go?”
Sakura absently touched her neck before a grin spread over her face.
It reminded Itachi of that cat in Alice in Wonderland. “It's a
kitsune. Fox demon. It has nine tails that start at the base of my
neck and fan out over my upper back.” The smile went from cat
in Alice to apple-eating-demon in Death Note. He made a note to do a
check on the mental health of a few of the dorm students. “Wanna
see?” And sexual harassment reports.
“Another time.” He looked over his shoulder. Sasuke had
stopped his fevered unpacking and his back seemed to have lost some
of its tension.
“I like this one.” Itachi turned back to her as she
touched his upper arm; lingering a little longer than necessary.
“What is it?”
The red and blue connecting circle with the small drop spilling from
the center covered the birthmark in the shape of a fluffy cloud on
his right bicep. He'd gotten flak about it at the academy for a year
before covering it. “It's the Uchiha family crest. Apparently
the family were some kind of nobles back in the day.”
“Cool. I like the colors.” She looked up from his arm
to watch Sasuke as he pulled out his clothes. Her earlier ire
seemingly cooled. “So, where are you guys fr.... is he folding
hats?”
The question switch didn't register right away and Itachi blinked at
her, following her line of sight, with confused eyes. He groaned
when he realized that Sasuke was, indeed, carefully folding
toboggans and boat hats. The compulsive habit didn't really bother
Itachi anymore, having seen it over the last five or six years, but
he could only imagine what it looked like to someone looking from the
outside. And judging by the wrinkled state of Sakura's cargo pants,
this behavior was off the charts strange.
“My brother is very structured.” He turned back to the
pink haired harbinger of doom and sucked in a breath. There was a
man standing behind her.
And he was glowing.
At least that was Itachi's first impression of the golden blond in
the door with a duffel slung over his shoulder. Of course, it was
ridiculous to think a man could glow and the eldest Uchiha marshaled
his thoughts to study him. Only the kid still glowed. It was the
hair maybe, gold and wheat and yellow all strung together to make a
halo of spikes that defied gravity. Then again it could have been
the skin, a rich honey tan that looked nearly edible. Those coupled
with the bright orange long sleeved t-shirt could make anyone appear
to glow. But Itachi was almost positive he'd never seen eyes that
blue or a smile that bright in all his years and when the guy moved
in to wrap his arms around the pink haired girl he knew he'd never
seen so much contentment on anyone's face.
“Sakura?”

Sasuke had decided it really wasn't worth it to keep staring. The
girl was nuts and Itachi could deal
with her. He only wanted to unpack his things, make his bed and curl
up under the covers for as long as his roommate would let him.
“Is he folding hats?”
The
question had sounded benign but Sasuke could faintly hear the
revulsion and accusation. No, Sasuke. Calm down. She's
not out to get you. She doesn't even know you.
He tried to relax his stance
and remember no one here knew him. He wasn't in any danger here.
Not everyone in the world is bad, Sasuke. You have to have
faith. No, he didn't, but for
his family he would try. He forced himself to place the unfolded
toboggan on the bed and address the girl standing, uninvited, in his
room when his thoughts scattered and tripped.
“Sakura?”
Smooth with a hint of tang. The voice made him turn around a little
too quickly. Luckily no one was looking when he toppled the small
pile of folded shirts to the floor and instead of looking up he bent
to retrieve them.
“What the hell have you done to your hair?”
This time he did look up and up and up. He had to consider his
vantage point on the floor for a moment because he was pretty sure
the guy was only about six feet, but still... it shouldn't be humanly
possible to look that good. He looked like a ray of sunlight. Too
bright sunlight that filtered through your closed blinds and woke you
very, very early in the morning. He said a silent prayer this wasn't
his roommate.
“Naruto!”
When Sakura's fist landed on that blond head he felt a small amount
of perverse pleasure. Not nearly enough to tap down the gut
wrenching nerves at the confirmation of the man's name though. Damn.
“Sasuke?” At the sound of his name he looked to his
brothers worried gaze... and hated it.
He wasn't weak, just nervous and, if he allowed himself to admit it,
scared. But he wasn't admitting to anything. No. He wasn't going
to let his first day at college beat him. He was not a child. He
was a grown man. He could do this. No one was going to hurt him.
Firming his spine he stood and realized with some satisfaction that
he was a little taller than the obscenely beautiful sunbeam shining
too brightly in the afternoon shadows. He was also pastier and
greasier but he was going to take this small victory. In his mind,
the blond owed him for his annoying girlfriend and the thorough
disruption of his day.
“What's
wrong with my hair?” Both Uchiha turned at the temperamental
whine emitting from a glossy pink mouth.
Naruto seemed
dazed for a moment, staring at the brothers, before he blinked and
turned back to Sakura with a slightly muted smile. “Am I
suppose to eat it or...”
Sasuke's eyes
widened and Itachi choked all the while watching the petite
pink-haired granola girlfriend of Sasuke's apparent roommate wail on
the blond with primal force. He blocked a few of the blows but more
landed than not. Even still the brothers found it an amazing show of
power and grace though the man on the receiving end laughed more
than he yelped.
“There is
NOTHING wrong with my HAIR! EVERYONE'S wearing it like this back
home! If you ever CAME back home you'd see that and what's more...”
“Excuse me.”
Sakura spun, fist
raised, then stopped with a look between anger and surprise.
“I don't
believe we've been introduced.” And Sasuke cursed his brothers
timing as those bright blue, laughing eyes turned on him before
sliding to his brother.
“Sorry.
Sorry.” The blond raised his hand with that hideous orange
cuff toward Itachi. “I'm Naruto Uzumaki. You must be...?”
“Itachi.
Itachi Uchiha.” Their hands meet, wrapped in a firm grip, gave
a single up and down shake before releasing.
“Nice to
meet you.” That tanned hand raised to the back of that golden
hair and scratched. Sasuke cataloged the movement before his new
roommate turned his seemingly nervous smile in his direction.
“So you're
Sasuke?” The hand at his hair started to lower then thought
better of it and stayed where it was. Sasuke refused to believe the
look of mild irritation on own his face had anything to do with it.
“Hehe. Nice to meet you. Sorry about Sakura.” The
blond deftly dodged a kick to the shin. “She was just
leaving.”
Sakura sniffed and
turned to leave. “It was nice to meet you.” She spared
a more suggestive if brief glance for Itachi before landing a
growling sneer on Naruto. “I'll be back to kick your ass
later, Uzumaki.”
“You can
try, Haruno.” And the door slammed shut on a very unique
obscenity Sasuke was going to have to look up in the dictionary
later.
That hand was
absently scratching blond locks and golden skin again as Naruto
turned his attention back toward Itachi and Sasuke. “I'm
really sorry about that. She's mostly harmless but she can get
really riled when she's provoked.”
Sasuke watched
Itachi nod then tuned out most of the conversation in favor of
picking up his rumpled shirts, only hearing the key words that seemed
to filter in uninvited. There was some discussion about the psyco
who'd just left as he folding the royal blue polo and a smattering of
information about some of the other occupants of the dorm when he
reached inside the open cubby in the bed to retrieve a fallen red
pullover. He'd just finished shaking out his Suna Derby sweatshirt
when he realized the conversation had turned to lunch and, to his
horror, Itachi was inviting his new roommate to dine with them.
“That is, if
it's alright with Sasuke?” Those familiar black eyes turned on
him and Sasuke internally groaned. He'd never be able to eat with
Naruto there, watching, scrutinizing, judging...
“Sasuke?”
He blinked at Itatchi's questioning eyes and fisted his hands in the
comfortable cotton of his well-worn shirt.
“That would
be... fine. That would be fine.” Breath, Sasuke, breath.
“Thank you for the invite.” Something passed over the
blond's face. Sasuke nearly missed it but it was gone to quickly for
him to interpret it. “If you don't mind, I'd like to get a few
things set up before hand. I'll meet you downstairs?”
Sasuke stood and placed the pullover on the bed. He was sick of
unpacking anyway. He needed a drink of water and a moment to
processes... well, everything. He wasn't going to get it here.
Itachi's hand landed on his shoulder and he turned to give him a
reassuring nod.
“We'll meet you out by the fountain, Naruto.” Itachi
said, and Sasuke found himself guided toward the door. “Take
your time.”
“Will do.” The door closed on Naruto's words and his
chipper wave.
Sasuke turned into the hall and took two steps before stopping and
patting his pockets. Itachi had moved ahead but stopped and turned
when Sasuke's heavy footfalls stopped.
“Is something wrong, little brother?”
Sasuke looked back to the room's closed door then to his older,
slightly concerned, brother. “I forgot my wallet. It was in
my bag and I...” He floundered, not having a way to express
his unease.
Luckily Itachi seemed to understand. “I'll be waiting at the
stairs.” Sasuke followed a pale pointed finger to the
stairwell at the end of the hall. “You can see me from the
door.”
Sasuke acknowledged the kindness with a nod and turned back to the
room. His mind wandering to his first few hours here and the already
seemingly insurmountable odds against him. How would he attend class
with so many eyes focused on him? How could he study with no
possibility of privacy? His resolve to stay was shaken that much
harder at the thought of sleeping, eating... oh dear God SHOWERING
with an audience. His hand was on the nob, turning it, in an effort
to ground himself when he heard the low moaning murmur from just
inside.
Flagging resolve and nightmarish visions of slippery soap evaporated
under the pressing wave of curiosity that washed over him. Naruto
sat, hunched on his unmade bed. His hands shaking slightly as he
rubbed a thick clear lotion into his right leg. Fascinated, Sasuke
stood as still as possible as and watched the process repeated on his
left leg before the blond reached into a small back and pulled out a
bottle of pills. The young Uchiha squinted hard in an effort to read
the bottle but it was far too small and put away far too quickly as
Naruto put the pills in the pocket of his pants and, groaning, stood.
Sasuke started to push the door completely open and make his
presence known when his knew roommate lifted his arms above his head
to stretch, letting the long sleeves of his orange shirt slip to his
elbows.
His breath held in his lungs and his tongue seemed to swell in his
mouth. Bruises littered that tanned golden skin and a ladder of red
puncture marks in various stages of healing showed heavy on his left
arm. Naruto's sigh covered the slight rattle of the handle as
Sasuke's hand began to shake and he thought better of getting his
wallet when the blond yawned and stuffed the bag into a small draw in
the desk next to his bed. Sasuke backed away from the door, letting
it sit awkwardly in it's partially opened position and turned to join
his brother at the stairwell door.
Itachi should know about this. After all, he wouldn't want his baby
brother living with a drug addict now would he?
