Chapter One: Altar of Blood
The mind is a wonderful thing.
It makes our entire being operate everyday, telling us what to do, what we see, smell, think, and want. Yet, when we are born, our minds are basically a blank slate; programmed to function with only the bare minimum of life. It is up to those who raise us to fill the blank slate with information so we grow up into the thriving adults that society expects of us. But every now and then, one of us will go astray. Who’s to say that our blank slate wasn't so blank when we were born, but instead had a dark smudge somewhere along the way. Is there no way to wipe the slate clean and start over, or must we just engrave the information harder to make it stand out against the darkness that we live by.
Old bells chimed high within the mighty spires, signaling the start of morning mass for the gothic church. It’s granite gargoyles looming over today’s participants, unaware of their unearthly audience. Each demonic head snarling in some fashion to ward away evil from the holy building. The sight of the church was rather ominous; rich stone painted white against a stormy sky. Gray clouds rolled across the heavens, promising storms in the near future.
Sasuke shook off the chill that snaked down his spin, gripping his jacket tighter around him for warmth. It was days like today that he both loved and loathed. Days when all you wanted to do was wrap yourself in thought, delving deeper and deeper into the dark depths of your very being. Yet what one might find in those crevices of the mind are nightmarish truths. Truths that we wish would stay forever gotten in some great sweeping abyss.
It was days like today that past horrors would engulf Sasuke, pulling him in with their crooked claws if he allowed his mind to wander too freely. That was why he sought solace within the holy walls of the cathedral, where only God’s word reigned supreme in his mind. Where he could pretend that there was hope, and a lord whom loved all things. Although, he often thought, who could possible love someone such as him?
What was love? Sasuke wasn’t really sure. He knew he could feel no love with in his cold heart. Yet the idea of the emotion intrigued him. He wanted to feel loved, be in love. Emotion just never came easy for him.
His father, Fugaku Uchiha, was sure to raise strong children, boys who wouldn’t cry or back down in a fight. Fugaku succeeded, his boys where strong and merciless. Although in doing so he took away the one thing that keep Sasuke feeling alive, his emotions. Yes, Sasuke could feel anger, resentment, annoyance, and others such as that, but it was such a monochrome grouping. All shaded grey, with no colorful emotion evening it out.
Sighing he shook his head, wanting nothing more than to get with in the safety of the walls before the memories began to plague in full force. Made this time god could ride him of the pain, bring an end to this lifeless life.
Did he want to die? Sasuke had no fear of death. To him it was just another part of the human life cycle. One that he freely accepted and often asked for during dark lonely nights. Despite his yearning for the grasp of death, he could never bring himself to take his own life.
Sasuke might be many things, but he wasn’t suicidal.
The crowd trying to get into the church pushed passed him, only making Sasuke scowl further. He didn’t like crowds, more so than he didn’t like people. If you were to ask him why, he would merely shrug and give some excuse about them being idiots.
In truth, Sasuke knew it was because he was jealous. Jealous of how they could smile and laugh, when he could only frown. They were truly alive, whereas he was already half dead.
He shuffled passed the thick, oak doors and into the mouth of the church. It was once a pilgrimage church, built to house thousands of religious followers and display the reliquary that dated back to Christ's time. But despite the time that had passed, little had changed in the old building.
He found a seat a few pews from the front and sat down at the end, grimacing at the hard, wooden bench. That was defiantly one thing that hadn't changed. He found his eyes glancing up at the alter where a young alter boy was lighting the white candles; their flames casting shadows across the stone floors.
It is ironic that the brightest lights cast the biggest and darkest shadows.
Sasuke let his eyes wander, straying over the sea of people that paraded around. Old couples in their last years of life trying to find salvation, families herding around bratty children, and the occasional loner like himself. They all were the same, sinners looking for forgiveness.
“Sorry Ma’am.” The voice filtered through bustling noise of the church, reaching Sasuke. He knew to whom it belong to, even if the speaker was a stranger to him.
Dark eyes shifted looking towards the darkest corner of the church. There sat a boy, maybe not even much younger than himself. His blond hair fell into his eyes. Eyes, Sasuke knew to be as blue as the sky. The boy knelt his head, beginning his morning prayers. It was his routine. Sasuke saw him do it every morning.
To Sasuke he looked like an angel and for all he knew he could very well be. The boy would just sit and pray through the whole service. Rarely would he talk to anyone, preferring to keep to himself. If someone who talk to him, the boy would only smile and nod. His voice was sweet and happy.
Sasuke often found himself wishing he could talk to the blond. Get to know him in hopes to bask in his brightness.
The choir began to sing, starting the beginning of today’s service. Sasuke turned his head, keeping his attention of the priest’s procession down the aisle towards the holy altar.
Maybe today Sasuke would talk to the boy. Yes today Sasuke would confront him. He felt like today was a special day. Something big was going to happen, he just knew it.
Letting a small smile slip upon his lips, Sasuke did not see as the boy stood and merged into the shadows, heading towards the deeper parts of the great cathedral.
The choirs of Ave Maria echoed loudly throughout the small side chapel, its innocent lyrics wrapping around the two figures trapped in a sensual dance. The act itself was deemed unholy in the eyes of the public, but they paid little mind to this fact and continued their actions. No one was here to watch them and only they themselves could condemn the act in which they partook.
After a particularly deep thrust, the smaller figure opened his mouth to scream, only to be stopped by a quick hand. The blond person on top shook his head and reached for white piece of cloth, before proceeding to tie it around the others mouth.
“We can’t have you screaming now, can we?” He whispered huskily, “You’ll bring the entire church here and then our sin would be exposed for the entire world to see.”
Brown eyes widened as a tan hand reached up to cup the pale face and they struggled against the tight bonds that held them in place. Fear coursed through his body and veins as the blond slowly dragged his hand down the heaving chest. He didn’t want this, he didn’t want this here; he didn’t want to die.
Murder itself is deemed unholy and morally wrong, but even more so to commit in a church.
Naruto tsk-ed softly, “So scared,” He said as he leisurely drug the knife through the soft skin, “Why are you scared? If you have been faithful and devoted during your life, then you have nothing to fear. Your last judgment will be glorious.”
The brunette made a cry through the gag and tears streamed down his face, wetting the white cloth and turning it a light grey color. His brown eyes followed the movements that the blond made and he screamed against the cloth in agony as pain seared through his chest.
Naruto’s eyes rolled back in pleasure as heat engulfed his fingers and he dug them deeper into the skin, allowing the rich, red colored blood to rush out quicker. He could feel the muscles quivering in pain as they tensed against the intrusion. His breath came out in short puffs as he stroked the muscles and his breath fanned across the pale face, “I can feel your heart beating under my fingers, I wonder how it would feel to hold it in my hand. Warm. Still beating.”
He pulled his hand out of the brunette’s chest and lapped up the blood on his fingertips. Azure eyes roamed over the crimson covered chest and he felt pleasure running through his veins. It wouldn’t take much more until he was finished, judging by the frantic breathing and pool of blood on the floor. He cocked his head toward the church, straining his ears to catch what was going on outside of the small chapel. A smirk formed across his lips; he would have plenty of time.
A low, muffled sound brought his attention back to his victim and he licked his lips. If he listened close enough, he could distinctly make out the words ‘oh God, please’ coming from the man’s throat. He patted the man’s check and flashed him a smile, “You’re awfully noisy aren’t you; let’s fix that.”
With a single movement, Naruto pulled the gag from the man’s mouth and before his mind could comprehend that his mouth was free, Naruto’s fingers were in his mouth. They tightly grabbed a hold of the wet muscle and pulled it out. Eyes widened as the steel blade from the knife glinted dangerously from the light coming in from the stained glass windows. A single moment later, blue eyes glanced down at the bloodied tongue that slipped through his fingers and onto the floor.
The white cloth was the only thing holding the other male up after his body had gone limp from the extreme pain. His muscles still jumped though when the slightly warm blade pressed against his cheek, “Much better.”
Naruto reached forward and pulled the man’s jaw down, allowing the blood to spill out of his mouth. It wouldn’t do for him to suffocate on his own blood. However, he had wished that this had lasted only slightly longer, he was only semi hard and he wanted to play more before he finished. He weighed his options, he could finish now and be unsatisfied until his next target, or he could wait for this one to wake up and finish the job then.
Decisions, decisions…
Sasuke winced slightly as the woman behind him hit the high note off key. He couldn’t say anything though about singing off key since he never sang to begin with. He only mouthed along with the song, pretending to sing and know the words.
His mind was elsewhere. Eyes’ darting back towards the spot the blond was supposed to be. The seat was currently empty, which was odd in itself.
The boy had always stayed for the whole service, never once leaving his seat early. Sasuke momentarily thought that the boy might have gone to use the bathroom, but as the minutes ticked by the actuality of it seemed less likely.
Perhaps he had gone off to another part of the church. Maybe to one of the private naive’s.
As the church stood and communion began, Sasuke raised himself from his seat determined to find the blond that had gone missing.
It was odd how he found himself worrying. Like something, bad had befallen the boy angel. But no, these walls were holy. No evil could penetrate here, or so Sasuke told himself.
Sasuke slipped passed the line of churchgoers, moving towards the inner workings and rooms of the vast establishment.
The room slowly came into focus and brown eyes blinked blearily at the occupants in the small space. They took in the tan figured with a golden halo floating around his head and for a fleeting moment, the man thought that his torture was over and he had died. The angel walked forward as he stretched out his hands in a welcoming gesture and the man struggled to raise his heavy arms. He wanted to greet the angel, tell him how happy he was to be here, but his voice died in his throat.
This was no angel.
“Glad to see that you’re still alive and awake.” Came that sinful voice.
This was the devil in disguise.
Unwillingly, he started to thrash against the bonds that held him, only to stop as intense pain raced through his limbs.
“I wouldn’t move too much if I were you.” His captor said, “I’ve retied you with metal wires, any unnecessary movements will cause the wires to cut deeper into your skin.”
His eyes tracked the blond as he moved to sit behind a large oak desk. His blue eyes shone with something he couldn’t place but his stomach churned and he knew that whatever it was, it couldn’t be good for him. Carefully, he tested the bonds that held him against the tall chair and he winced when they bit into his skin.
Naruto chuckled softly as he watched the man try to find a way to escape. His left hand dropped below the desk while his right hand fingered the knife in his hand and his mind toyed with the options that lay in front of him.
“You have a nice family.” He said, breaking the silence. “If you escaped, do you think they would welcome you back with open arms in your condition? Would your wife and child even love you anymore? You, who are now disfigured.”
The man made an angry noise and his eyes narrowed into slits. He wished he could talk so he could chew the blond out, but he could only settle for glaring now. He had been married to his wife for over twenty years and they had a beautiful little girl that was turning three soon. Of course, they would take him back.
Naruto shrugged, “I’m just saying, I’ve seen marriages break apart for lesser reasons. But it’s your call.” He stood up, ignoring the friction in his pants, “Let’s test your little theory. I’ll let you go and if your family accepts you back; you can live. If they don’t, well, I think we know what will happen.”
His captive jumped as he brought the knife closer to his ankles and sliced through the rope. He glanced up and locked his eyes with the man’s as he brought out the wire clippers, “I’m going to clip these, but if you try to leave before I sit back down again, I’ll kill you no matter what. Understand?”
There was a brief nod of the head and Naruto clipped through the wires quickly. He stepped back quickly, hissing only slightly and went to move to the chair behind the desk, watching the man closely. No sooner did his bottom touch the seat did the man push himself forward and out of the chair.
A strangled sound tore from the back of his throat and Naruto let out a sigh of relief. Finally, he could have his release.
His eyes glazed over as they looked at the struggling man on the floor. In his hurry to finish the job, he had conveniently forgotten to tell the man about the thin metal wire that was loped around his neck; more specifically, his windpipe. Now, the wire was cutting into the man’s throat, spilling crimson blood onto the already tainted floor and he was gasping for breath while trying to move towards the door. The chair prevented that from happening nicely, since he made sure that the chair was tied securely to desk.
He wasn’t going anywhere.
Naruto didn’t bother to bite back the groan that escaped from his lips. He had waited too long for this day; weeks of planning were now going to pay off. His fingers fumbled with the button on his dark jeans and finally managed to get it undone. With a shiver, he released his straining erection from his pants, glad that he had chosen not to wear boxers, seeing, as they would only get in the way. He wrapped his fingers around his pulsing length and gave it a few strokes while his other hand gripped the armrest tightly.
The figure on the ground made a strangled, gurgling sound and Naruto bit his lip to keep the moan from being heard. The church was silent and in prayer and if he was too loud, someone would enter the room to see what was the matter. His hand picked up speed, pausing occasionally to tease the slit. He could feel the pre-cum leaking through his fingers and he thrust his hips forward as his eyes rolled back in pleasure at the contact.
He could feel his release coming and his hand continued to make jerky movements along his length. Heat coiled in his lower body, twisting and winding its pleasure around him, begging to snap. It snaked tighter and tighter throughout his body, almost suffocating him with pleasure before it decided to break its hold over him.
His body tensed as he came into his hand, hips still thrusting slightly as he rode out the waves of pleasure that wracked his body. He let his head roll back against the neck rest and he panted for breath as his body tried to come down from its recent high. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew that he needed to hurry up and finish the job, but his body refused to move at the moment.
Naruto soaked in the after affects a little while longer before slowly struggling to pull himself from his daze. He grabbed a towel behind him to clean himself up before he zipped his pants up again. His gaze settled on the figure on the floor and clear blue eyes looked on in disgust. It was time to finish this.
A few quick strides brought him to the man’s side and he clipped away the wire that was holding him to the chair. The man had been diligent in trying to escape and the wire had almost completed the job for him, coming within a breath of the man’s windpipe. He picked up a new knife off the table and kneeled down next to the body.
And outside, the congregation started to murmur, “Our Father, who art in Heaven…”
He straddled the man and tilted his head to the side so he could see the emotions swimming in the brown eyes. His heart sped up as his eyes picked out the fear, anger, and pain that no longer lay dormant in the glazed over eyes. A chuckle escaped his lips and he felt a violent shiver run through the man beneath him.
“Shall we?” He asked and brought the knife up to the already large cut in the pale throat. He pushed the blade into the skin and the metal easily cut through the torn skin and muscles, bleeding more blood onto the floor. A gagging sound was heard as the blade touched the windpipe and blue eyes flashed dangerously.
“For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.”
Naruto jerked the knife swiftly through the man’s pharynx.
“Amen.” He finished.
The body convulsed under him as it tried to get oxygen to the organs and blood, and the brown eyes rolled up into their sockets, showing off the white undersides. The convulsing finally slowed down and the body fell limp under him. He stood up and glanced at the room; all around him, blood decorated the small room; the final attribute to his completed job.
Signed and sealed in blood.
His knife was still embedded in the throat and he toyed with the idea of pushing it through the rest of the way; further severing the head from its body. He reached down and picked up the corpse by the collar of his now bloodied shirt and unceremoniously dropped it onto a small stone alter. He found his way around the desk and sat down heavily, cool eyes regarding the body. His eyes blinked a couple times and his body shuddered off the extra adrenaline still flowing through his veins.
Eyes cleared for the first time in an hour and then widened, “What have I done?”
Sasuke walked, slowly at first and then with more conviction as he heard noises coming from one of the small rooms in the back of the church.
His heart was beating fast, as if expecting some unforeseen sight. Something was telling him to turn around, go back to the safety of the main worship.
No matter the force of the strings pulling him back, his feet continued forward; walking on an unknown path. Sasuke had never entered this part of the cathedral before. It was the area used for reconciliation and other meetings between priests and devote Christian’s.
Most of the rooms where dark, but one glowed in the murky hallway. Somewhere in the back of his mind screamed 'Don't go towards the light', like something you would hear in a cheap movie.
Convinced that no harm would be fall him, Sasuke continued on; slowly, step after step, going towards the room that shown so nicely.
There was no hesitation when he reached for the doorknob. Only hope that he would see the man in which he sought.
Sure enough, as the door opened, blond hair came into view. The boy was sitting there so peacefully behind a desk.
Sasuke felt his heart slow and ease into a stead rhythm. He had been worked up over nothing. It frustrated him to think that someone he didn't even know could get him so worked up. Yet wasn't that why he was so intrigued with the boy before him.
Maybe it was the life the blond made boil up within him, which had Sasuke so out of character. He couldn’t even stop himself from walking into the room without any other thoughts. Only that he wanted to talk to the boy, know his name.
He stopped however when his foot met liquid, the sole of his shoe making a splash. The boy turned as Sasuke stared down at the crimson substance, those blue eyes filled with surprise.
Sasuke could only stare. Blood; a river of it, pooled around him. It seemed endless as he looked for it source. What he saw made his mouth go dry, he couldn't scream even if he wanted to.
Upon the small altar, laid the mangled body of a human, man or woman he could not tell.
The neck was slashed; blood thick and wet as it still bubbled from the lacerations. How fresh was this kill?
Sasuke turned then, searching for his angel. He needed to see something to end this nightmare. But, what he saw chilled his body. No angel stared back at him. Only the cold steel blue eyes of the devil.
