- Gai hovered over Lee shifting from foot to foot unsure of how to comfort his sobbing student. Since Lee had become a jounin after turning eighteen, these past two years they went on nearly all jounin-level missions together. In all that time, Gai had always been very careful during the missions, but today he was distracted by Lee’s fight and was nearly killed. Lee had saved him, but now that they were back at the inn they were staying for the evening on their way back to the village, Lee was sobbing from his fear.
“Gai-san, I am sorry for my tears, but I am just so afraid of what life would be like without you,” Lee gasped between heavy tears.
Gai half smirked at Lee’s comment. Since Lee had also reached jounin level, the two’s relationship transformed from student-teacher to two best friends. Gai had insisted that Lee stop calling him sensei since he was no longer his teacher, but his teammate.
He bent down and placed a reassuring hand on Lee’s trembling shoulder. “Lee, please stop crying. Everything is okay. See,” he said lifting Lee’s chin to look up at him, “I’m still here, and I’m not going anywhere.”
Lee wiped his eyes and looked deeply into Gai’s coal-colored eyes truly seeing that he was still there. The knot in his chest grew tighter as his heart began to flutter. He was still there.
With a full smile, “I’m not going anywhere,” Gai said again.
Before he could even stop to think, Lee reached out his hand and touched Gai’s cheek. Gai’s smile faded to a very serious look, as if he was unsure what to think. His hand traveled from Gai’s cheek and intertwined his fingers into Gai’s black mop and pulled his face towards his own. Lee’s heart fluttered as his lips pressed against Gai’s still lips.
Lee closed his eyes and took a deep breath allowing himself to melt into the moment. Gai did not know what to do, so he sat tensed up as Lee kissed him. What is he doing? What am I supposed to do? Gai thought.
When Lee took a deep breath and relaxed, Gai’s brain stopped overworking. He just felt. He felt the moment, Lee’s soft lips, Lee’s hand pulling him close. He closed his eyes and kissed Lee back. His big hands crept up and rested on Lee’s tear-streaked face.
They pulled away from one another and looked at each other.
“Lee, what was that?”
“I’m sorry, Gai-san. I have had deep feelings for you for many years. When you were almost killed today, I realized I could not hide it anymore.”
Without another thought, Gai grabbed Lee and embraced him deeply. Even after all these years, Lee was still tiny in comparison to Gai’s large frame. Gai’s calloused fingers caressed Lee’s hair. He couldn’t believe this moment.
