This chapter is just kind of an introduction, and it should hopefully
get better as time goes on.
Chapter One
Sasuke sighed as he looked out of the window of the police
car that had picked him. He’d made it
farther this time; he almost got to the border before they picked him up. He watched the street lights go by and sighed
loudly. The policewoman who picked him
up smirked at him. “You know your
parents are really sick of all your crap.”
Sasuke glowered at the woman. “I’m sick of my parents. Don’t see the problem. They could just let me be.”
The woman sighed.
“You can’t keep running away from home, Sasuke. One of these times they aren’t going to bail
you out. What happens then?”
Sasuke shrugged. “I
finally get out from Itachi’s shadow and have a chance to live my own goddamn
life.”
The policewoman shook her head. Sasuke Uchiha, heir to one of the biggest
companies in the world, ran away from home on a nearly weekly basis. His family always used their influence to be
sure he came back home to them, but they were growing frustrated. They wanted him to understand the world
didn’t revolve around him. She was
beginning to think he didn’t think the world revolved around him so much as his
infamous brother.
While it was true that most of the Uchihas had vices of some
kind, Itachi had been fond of alcohol.
He had a genius intellect, and it caused him to tread the line between
genius and insanity. Itachi had gotten
himself so drunk he actually rationalized killing his best friend/cousin. The family had found a way to keep the charges
from sticking and Itachi had been released back home. Now Itachi was under lock and key at the
house, only allowed out with supervision, and still managed to be their
father’s favorite while Sasuke was constantly supervised, lest he turn into
another Itachi.
Sasuke grumbled as they arrived back at his house. “Thanks, I guess.”
The policewoman rolled her eyes as she stepped out of the
vehicle. She let Sasuke out of the
backseat and walked to the door of his mansion with him. She rang the doorbell. Sasuke stuck his hands in his pocket and
glared at the door. As soon as the knob
turned he forced indifference over his face.
Sasuke’s mother was at the door in tears. “Oh Sasuke! Sweetie, are you all right? Come in, please. We’ll get you all warmed up and get some good
food into you and everything will be better.”
Sasuke strode into the house to appease his mother. Meanwhile Fugaku Uchiha had pulled the
policewoman to the side. “Thank you for
bringing him home.” He sighed and ran a
hand through his hair. “I don’t know
what to do with him anymore. He just
keeps doing this.”
The policewoman shrugged and handed him the pamphlet she had
been given before she was sent out to find the young heir. “My captain suggests Konoha Institution.”
Fugaku sighed and took the material from the woman. “I just can’t see committing my son, but
thank you.”
The policewoman shrugged.
“Sometimes kids just need a wakeup call, you know?” She smiled and headed back to her car.
Fugaku sighed and shut the door behind him. He walked into the kitchen where his wife was
babying Sasuke. He shook his head. “Mikoto, I need to
talk with Sasuke alone.”
Sasuke glared at his father and sighed when his mother
smiled and nodded. He watched her kiss
his father before scurrying from the room.
Sasuke growled. “Whatever it is, I
don’t want to hear it.”
Fugaku shrugged and slid the pamphlet he had been given
across the table. Sasuke caught it,
knowing it would be worse for him if he didn’t.
Fugaku frowned as he spoke. “If
you don’t quit with the disappearing act, I’m going to be forced to commit
you. The police chief will put you there
himself next time.” Sasuke
shrugged. “Fine, Sasuke. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
Sasuke shoved his chair back and pushed past his father
before running to his room and cranking his music. His dad just didn’t get and he never would.
~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~
Gaara stood on top of the school building. He was looking over the edge at the small
group of people who had gathered below him.
Do it. Look they all want you dead anyway. You’ll be free from them and their rules and
their attempts to make you ‘normal’.
Gaara closed his eyes and put his hands to head. “Shut up!”
He growled at the voice in his head.
He wanted to fight it. There were
still remnants of the drugs in his system.
He opened his eyes and looked down again.
He saw a bunch of the kids in his grade gathered at the
bottom of the building. They were
pointing up at him and talking. He
couldn’t hear what they were saying, but he didn’t have to. They were talking about him. They were plotting against him. They were always plotting against him. He started taking whatever it was his doctor
had prescribed him, but it didn’t work anymore.
The voice came through and he was just drugged up enough to listen to
it.
He stepped up to the edge of the building and let his toes
hang over the ledge. They want you dead. They all think you’re worthless. You should show them. Make sure you land on some of them. Take them with you and make them pay. He climbed off the ledge again. This wasn’t normal and this wasn’t what he
wanted. He wanted to go with his friends
and just have lunch.
He sat down against the edge of the roof and grabbed his
head again. “No!” He hollered to the
voice. He reached into his bag and
pulled out the pocket knife he always carried.
He’d just carve the fucking voice out if he had to. Why hadn’t anyone come up here to stop
him? Did they all really not care? He’d been on the roof for at least 30 minutes
now. Someone should have gotten up here
by now. He pushed the knife into his
wrist. Once the blood was gone the voice
would be gone and he would be safe.
He fought the tears at the pain. This was necessary. He had to get rid of his tainted blood. He slid the cold steel up his wrist and ignored
the burning, searing pain. He had to do
it. It was the only way to save himself. He vaguely
wondered if anyone would care that he was gone.
He watched as the blood streamed down his arm and laughed. His eyes had taken on a maniacal glint. He was free, finally free.
He brought the knife to his other wrist and sliced the skin
there as well. He smiled as he leaned
back and closed his eyes. He could feel
the pain, but it was welcome. It was a
distraction to the pain in his head and his heart. He could feel his senses drifting away. It was only from a vague far-off place that
he realized there was someone picking his body up. He wanted to laugh, but his body didn’t
respond. He was gone. They wouldn’t get him back this time.
Gaara blinked and tried to turn his head to get away from
the light. He heard the sounds of the
hospital. It wasn’t like he hadn’t been
here before. They were always trying to
keep things he might kill himself with away from him. If they had only known about the pocket
knife, he wouldn’t have had the chance to fail again. Every time they found him and kept him alive,
he just about had a nervous breakdown.
He looked up and saw worried blue eyes watching him. “You don’t have to keep showing up and saving
me,” Gaara mumbled to the only person he could consider a friend. “I’m not worth anyone’s effort.”
The blue eyes watching him filled with tears. “They said they’re done with it, Gaara.” Naruto wiped his eyes and nose. “Your sister can’t deal with it anymore.”
Gaara shrugged. “Why
should she? I’m such a waste of space.”
Naruto sighed and brushed his friend’s red hair from his
face. “Why can’t you see what you mean
to us?”
Gaara just turned away from those eyes. He couldn’t stand the pain he caused the
normally cheerful Naruto. When his meds
had been working, they had grown close.
Gaara had told him about the schizophrenia, but that he didn’t have to
worry, because Gaara was fine on his meds.
He had been then. He sighed and
looked back at the blond who was still holding his hand. “I’m sorry, Naruto.
Naruto shrugged, but Gaara could see the pain in the blue
eyes. “I’m sorry isn’t enough. Temari is
committing you to Konoha Institution.”
Gaara closed his eyes and held back the pain. Of course he was being committed. He was crazy after all. The meds didn’t work, and he’d just tried to
kill himself again. He had to know. He opened his eyes. “Will you come visit me?”
Naruto’s face softened.
“You know I will Gaara. I don’t
want you to think no one cares about you.
You’re my best friend.”
Gaara laughed softly.
“I guess that just shows how fucked up you are, huh?”
Naruto sighed.
“Gaara, please don’t do this again.
My heart can’t take many more frantic trips to the hospital and praying
that you’re going to wake up this time.”
He sighed and hugged his friend.
“It took more than 20 minutes to get through the barricade you put on
the door this time. If I hadn’t
completely lost it and just broken the banister from the stairs, you would have
died.”
Gaara sighed. Why did
no one understand that’s what he wanted?
They want you to suffer. They are out to cause
you harm. No one understands you or
cares for you the way I do. Gaara
grabbed his head. “NO!”
Naruto grabbed Gaara harder.
“I’m sorry I can’t make it stop, Gaara. I’m sorry I’m not a strong
enough friend.”
Gaara sobbed. Naruto
squeezed harder. “It’s not your fault
I’m a mental case, Naruto.”
~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~
Sasuke sighed. He’d
been at the border crossing this time.
‘I guess you can’t cross the border when your very wealthy and
influential parents put out a missing child alert for you,’ he thought
crossly. He was currently waiting for
his father to show up and tell him what a waste he was. He crossed his arms over his chest and glared
out the window.
He saw his father pull up and saw the drawn look on his
father’s face. When his father opened
the door, he was lead to where they were keeping Sasuke. Fugaku sighed. “It hasn’t even been a week Sasuke.”
Sasuke shrugged and huffed, “Hn.”
Fugaku sighed. “I
didn’t want to do it, Sasuke, but you are such an ungrateful, spoiled
brat. I think this might be the only way
to get it through your head.”
Sasuke glared at his father.
He wouldn’t dare. Fugaku
sighed. “You’re being sent to Konoha
Institution.” Sasuke stood up and
stormed past his father and into the car.
He could see his bags had all ready been packed. He wiped the tears from his eyes before his
father could see them. What did he care
if they didn’t want him around?
He sighed as they drove in silence. “Whatever.
I don’t care. I’ll be 18 in a
matter of months and it won’t matter. I
leave then, and I’ll never come home again.”
Fugaku sighed. “Sasuke, please don’t be
like that. We’ve tried to get you to
stop running away through other measures, but you won’t listen. I’m sorry you don’t like our rules, but we
don’t want you to take after Itachi.”
Sasuke screamed and pulled at his hair. “I’m not fucking Itachi. I hate fucking Itachi. Itachi, Itachi, Itachi, Itachi. That’s all that’s ever mattered in your life,
‘what’s Itachi doing?’” Sasuke bit his
lip to keep from crying. “I can’t do
anything without you watching my every goddamn move.”
Fugaku stopped his car in the parking lot of the
institution. “Why haven’t you said
anything before this?”
Sasuke wanted to cry, but forced the ice back into his voice. “I have.
I’m just not Itachi so you don’t listen to a word I say.” He stepped out of the car and grabbed the
bags that had been packed for him. He
stomped to the doors of the Institution without so much as a second look back
at his father. He threw the doors open
and dropped his bags in the waiting area.
The receptionist gave him a strange look and turned toward his father as
he entered the building.
~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~
Gaara wanted to cry as he was wheeled through the
hallways. He’d recovered from his
injuries. They were letting him go, but
he wasn’t going to live his life this time.
He was going to the mental institution.
He’d become too much of a burden to his sister. Who cared that he would be 18 soon
enough? As soon as he was, he’d check
himself out of that place and finally, maybe, succeed with his plans.
The blond pushing him couldn’t find his normally rock solid
smile. His best friend was suffering and
didn’t want help from anyone. Temari had
explained long ago that it was caused by his condition. He was skeptical of anyone offering to help,
thinking it was some trap to cause him pain.
She said that when he snapped or seemed out of it that it wasn’t
anything personal. He seemed to believe
in the craziest things, like ghosts and witches, but who was he to judge? “I’ll be with Temari and Kankuro when they
check you in, okay?”
Gaara nodded. He knew
this place was where he belonged. He
belonged in a place with no means of suicide and with the other crazy
assholes. At least when he got there,
he’d be around other people with real problems.
He sighed. Naruto had real
problems, but he was still so goddamn sunny all the time. How could a 3 year old witness the brutal
murder of his parents and not end up fucked up?
Gaara had no idea. “Okay,
Naruto.”
Naruto watched as Kankuro and Temari got Gaara into the car
with all his belongings. He smiled sadly
at Temari as she shut the door. “Is he
going to be all right?”
She shrugged her shoulders.
“Only time will tell. You want to
ride with us?”
Naruto nodded and climbed into the car on the other side of
Gaara. He smiled sadly at his friend and
rode in the vehicle in unbearably strained silence for the half hour to get to
the institution. When they pulled up,
Gaara paled until a tanned hand closed over his. “I promised I’d visit. I’ll be here once a week.”
Gaara relaxed a little. “Thanks,
Naruto.” He opened the door and stood
looking up at the three story brick structure.
“Damn.” He muttered to himself.
There were bars on the windows, and three stories would probably only be
enough to severely cripple him instead of killing him.
Naruto smiled and wrapped his arm around Gaara’s shoulders.
“You might meet some nice people in here.
Be open to friends, okay?” Gaara
nodded and let Naruto maneuver him into a waiting room. He looked up and saw a black haired boy
arguing with his dad over his commitment and some nurses taking the boys bags
to his room. The doctor came out and
Gaara snorted at the same moment as the dark haired boy did.
Sasuke turned his angry black eyes to the sound of a second
snort. Someone else who looked like the
wanted nothing to do with this institution was looking at the doctor that had
just come out as well.
Gaara eyed the man with distrust. Fucking hippie if you ask me. Gaara grabbed his head and slammed it
backward trying to break his skull. He
just had to get this voice out of his head.
Naruto saw what was going to happen and stuck his hand behind Gaara,
cushioning the blow. “I love you too
much, Gaara.”
Gaara sighed as he saw Temari come back. “You’re checked in, Gaara. A doctor will be out here shortly to discuss
the building and your living arrangements with you. We’ve been given permission to visit every
other day, and Naruto has been given weekly permission.”
Gaara nodded and resigned himself to this fate for now. He smiled at his sister. “You don’t have to come visit that
often. I know you’re busy.”
Temari sighed. “Gaara, the three of us
are all you have. We’re not going to
leave you alone.” She shook her head. Their father had killed himself in front of
Gaara when he was just a tiny baby, and he’d never been the same since.
