Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
A/N: I know the hes in this chapter get a bit confusing, but it does serve a purpose in this chapter. It’s to create the suspense. I promise it won’t be as confusing in later chapters.
He sat on the bridge overlooking the small river, tears quietly and almost unobtrusively running down his cheeks. His thoughts were coming as fast he pushed them away. He recalled the way the last few months of his life had not gone anywhere close to where he would have liked them. He thought about the face that was still haunting him, even though he’d just officially ended the relationship.
Everyone thought he’d raped Sasuke. Why wouldn’t they. They hadn’t actually admitted the relationship aloud. Sasuke always told him it was for his own good; that it would save him from the fan girls. What he’d never understood was why Sasuke was cold, even flat rude, to him in front of other people.
In private, Sasuke always said such sweet and loving things to him. They were things that no one who knew Sasuke could imagine coming out of his mouth. Sasuke always said he loved him, that he couldn’t live without him. They were together for almost a year this way, him secretly catching Sasuke for private moments or having Sasuke come to his house. He never went to Sasuke’s. His parent’s wouldn’t have approved of the fact that he was dating a man. Sasuke said he was nervous what his brother would think, and he just wasn’t ready yet to tell them. He swore he would someday let everyone know they were together.
That had been all right with him at first. He’d understood, only coming out to his parents a few months before he and Sasuke got together. They had been kind and understanding. It hadn’t mattered to them so long as he was happy. It had always been about his happiness in his household and it was difficult for him to imagine a family that couldn’t put their child’s happiness first. Sasuke’s household had been exactly that. Everything in that house, the one or two times he’d been over before they had gotten into whatever their fucked up relationship was, had been dedicated to Sasuke’s older brother, Itachi.
He knew that Itachi was smart. He was the prodigy of their clan. He was an ANBU captain, the youngest there had been. He was beautiful, though the fact he knew it made him less so. He was currently engaged to a member of the Hyuuga family, and was set to take over as the head of his clan by an early age. It seemed that Sasuke’s parents had no time for their second best son. They didn’t care that Sasuke’s grades rivaled Itachi’s or that Sasuke was in fact, in position to be an ANBU captain himself, soon. In fact, they never even noticed if Sasuke didn’t come, except that his chores would not be finished. He couldn’t understand that there were parents like this in the world, and even more so, he had a hard time understanding the frame of mind it put Sasuke in. Still, he loved Sasuke enough to try and understand. He wanted to try to be what Sasuke needed.
It all came crashing down in one moment. He’d been caught with Sasuke making out behind the building after school. They usually didn’t do anything in public, but Sasuke had had a particularly harsh morning, and wanted the comfort. He was only too happy to provide it, thinking finally they might have moved past this barrier in their relationship. Only when Naruto had come around the corner and shouted Sasuke’s name, Sasuke had frozen. It was enough to tell him that they were not ready for this yet. Sasuke wasn’t ready for this yet. Sasuke had hurriedly sat up and buttoned his pants again, pulling his shirt back down, and glaring at him. He knew there was trouble to come. Naruto had approached him spouting off something about not forcing himself on people. He’d run from the situation.
Sasuke had found him later to apologize and tell him he was sorry about the situation, but he just wasn’t ready yet to let people know. Sasuke said he knew it was difficult and it would only get worse as the rumor spread around. He also knew that Sasuke would do nothing to stop the rumor. He’d cried, but still he wasn’t willing to give up on his relationship.
When his parents had found out, he’d gotten a lot of lectures. He knew they weren’t meant to be lectures, but still they were lectures. They wanted him to be careful in giving his heart away to someone who could be so cold, to someone who would let him suffer and be outcast and labeled the way he had been. Still, they treated Sasuke as part of the family when he was around. He knew Sasuke had been thankful for that. They would not treat him poorly, because it would make their son very unhappy.
He heard steps coming towards him, pulling him from his memories. He looked up to see not Sasuke, but Neji, walking toward him. He put on a fake smile. Neji had been the one to make him see that he didn’t want to hide his relationship from the world. He’d been the one who made him understand the feelings that were mixing in his mind. Neji was a good friend who was there for him when he needed it.
Neji sat beside him, no words coming and no words needed. It was enough to have his presence for now. They would speak eventually, of that he had no doubt. They were both geniuses, after all. They knew that not everything could perfect after what had happened, but they also knew silence was greatly appreciated for the first few minutes. It was the period to readjust to each other. It was the period to allow him to collect his thoughts after a particularly difficult decision.
Neji wrapped an arm around his shoulders and sighed. Neji pressed his head to the shoulder beside him, curling tight to the slightly trembling body in an effort to help release some tension and pain. He knew this had been the right decision and his friend would eventually be happier, but right now Neji knew he needed someone just to be there. He smiled softly at his friend, “Shikamaru, I’m here,” he whispered.
A/N: I have a plan for this. I just wanted to see if anyone else was interested in this kind of story. Eventually it’ll be Shika/Neji (I’ve got a huge weak spot for this pair). There will be other pairings, though I don’t know them yet. This was just to kind of set the scene, if you will. I wanted to test the waters and see what kind of response this gets. I have a few other ideas bouncing around in my head as well. If this one isn’t met well, I might try one of those.
