Chapter 1: The Gift

"My life sucks"

There she was, a 22-year-old girl, laying on her bed, unable to sleep... She glanced at the white ceiling, thinking about how pathetic her life was... Sure she had a good job, and a few people around that were supposed to be her friends� but she still felt empty, like she was wasting her life by just living on�

She remembered her mother, who died a year ago, she remembered how her father hated her, and how he had made her little sister hate her as well�

But she also remembered that things hadn�t always been like this� back in the day, when she was a little kid, they were a happy family� or at least that�s what it looked like, because there were many secrets kept from her�

It all began when her parents divorced, only a year after her little sister was born� Her mother left, and she was stuck with him, looking after her sister� her father was always in a bad mood, he was always being rude and barking orders� but the thing she most hated about him was not the way he looked down at her, or the way he treated her� it was the way he insulted her mother, the way he humiliated her�

Finally, when she was of age and tired of always obeying his commands, she told him she was old enough to know what she wanted, and the first thing she wanted was to take the reins of her own life, to follow the path she chose, instead of the one her father had chosen for her� that day was it, she knew the day she faced her father she�d be leaving� she was already prepared, but she�d never forget the words he shouted at her just before she grabbed her stuff and stormed out of the house�

�You�re just like your damned mother! Go on, waste your fucking life just like she did! Go away and never come back here, NEVER!�

After that night, she went to live with her mother� She was the exact opposite of her father� she was kind, understanding, caring� When she went to her house, she said she always knew that she�d see the truth someday�

They lived together in an apartment, always helping each other out, like sisters� the perfect team; mother and daughter together�

However, a year ago, everything changed� it was all because of that accident� because of that drunken bastard driving too fast� but that car took away more than her mother�s life with it� it also took away her will to live on� to keep fighting in this lame world, where nobody can be fully trusted, where all words spoken are empty and honour is just a meaningless word, where love and friendship only exist in fairy tales�

She felt tears leaving her eyes, but she didn�t care� there was no one there to see her crying� no one to see her broken� so it didn�t matter�

After a while, she began to feel sleepy� but she didn�t want to fall asleep, she knew that if she gave in she�d have nightmares again� and she didn�t want to see her mother dying again�

Suddenly she had an idea; she could use a little trick she liked to call her Lucid Dreaming Jutsu� she almost smiled at the last word� back in the day, when she started developing her psychic abilities, she watched a lot of Naruto, so she named everything she learned to do, pretending they were �jutsus�� but jokes apart, it was worth a try�

She closed her eyes and concentrated, feeling the energy flow through her body, waiting for sleep to come� when it did, she awoke in her subconscious� she opened her eyes and stared down at herself, lying on her bed, still fully clothed, apparently sleeping, and smiled from where she was floating near the ceiling� it worked

She decided where she wanted to go, she closed her eyes again, and was about to leave when�

�Wait�

She froze and opened her eyes, startled

�What the�?� She started looking around for the source of the voice� It didn�t make any sense; she had done this many times before, but never had happened something like this�

Suddenly, the room began to disappear in a white mist, and she found herself standing in some kind of empty space, surrounded by white

�Where am I?� She asked to no one in particular

�You don�t need to know� The voice answered

She turned around and found the last thing she�d have expected� a tall figure wrapped in a white tunic, a hood covering his eyes and part of his face, but revealing the huge fangs and red skin of his face� his hands were also uncovered, and were also red, with long claws� he was grinning at her, looking amused

�Who� who are you?� She asked once she recovered from the initial shock

�Aw, come on, don�t play dumb, little girl, you know who I am�

�Actually, he does look familiar�� She thought, but, that was just plain stupid� �Something must have gone wrong with my technique and I�m having a weird dream, that�s all� it�s the only possible answer��

His grin widened �And there I thought you�d catch up quickly��

His arrogant tone was starting to piss her off �And what is that supposed to mean?� She asked, folding her arms� She didn�t like the way he seemed to be toying with her mind�

He just laughed �It means I expected you to trust your instincts a bit more� He said, but then added �I am exactly who you think I am�

�You can�t be� She said stubbornly

�Trust me, I am�

�Stop fooling around and answer my question�

�Come on� at least try and guess�

�� Was he serious? Could he actually be HIM?? �You� you�re the Death God? Shinigami-sama?�

�See? You knew� He said still grinning

�But why are you here?� She asked, and suddenly looked down at herself �Am I dead?�

He just laughed �No, you�re not dead, not yet anyway��

She looked suspiciously at him �What do you mean, not yet?�

�I needed to separate your soul from your body in order to talk to you, but to do that by force could mean killing you� but since your soul already came out by itself, you�re still alive� He said calmly

�So�� She said, once she had assimilated all the information �Why did you want to talk to me? It has to be something important, since you were actually going to kill me in order to do that� She was again with her arms folded, and a look of I-don�t-trust-you-so-you-better-have-a-good-explanation on her face

�I came here with a gift for you, but only if you wish to take it� He said calmly, but visibly amused at her reaction

�A gift?� She asked, completely lost �Why would the Death God have a gift for a common human?� Then she narrowed her eyes �Unless, of course, you�re expecting to gain something from it� She said, now almost glaring at him

�My, my� what a reputation I have�� He joked

�Hn� She said, still waiting for his answer

�Because I feel generous today?�

�Do you actually expect me to believe that?� Her glare intensified

�Ok, ok� I�ll explain� He said almost laughing �There�s someone in another dimension that asked me a favour, and I needed someone who wanted to help me willingly��

�Why me?�

�Because you seemed the perfect kind of person for the job� and also, since you�re more open-minded than most of the people in your dimension, it�d be easier for you to understand everything�

She answered with a nod, allowing him to continue

�So, if you accept, I�ll grant you a new life in that other dimension, you�ll be born again, but of course, you�d have to give up your previous life�

�� She thought about what he said� but she was still in doubt� �That�s all? I�d need a few more details before I decide��

He laughed �I supposed you�d say that� what kind of details are you interested in?�

�For example, I bet you could tell me a bit more about that other dimension� She stated

�I can do better� I can show you� He said, and with that, the clean white room began to disappear, and the next thing she knew, she was floating in the air next to Shinigami �There, take a look�

She felt odd� it was like lucid dreaming, she looked around, and saw an enormous desert below them, on one side, there was a forest� she fled down, and found a little village, looking pretty peaceful� then she spotted a young woman with flaming red hair walking down the street with a black-haired man, holding hands and smiling while they chatted.

�That�s her� Shinigami suddenly said appearing right next to her

�That�s who?�

�The woman that asked me for a child� He said

�You mean��

�Yes, that�s where you�d go; she�d be your mother�

She looked down at the happy couple again� then she noticed something else; the looks of the man behind them were sort of familiar� when she moved closer, she noticed the headband he wore� and recognised the symbol engraved on it. She looked at Shinigami, who just laughed

�There you go� He said, like he had just read her thoughts �Did I answer your question?� She nodded absently, still looking at the symbol �Well then, let�s get back� And with that, they were back in the big white room

She was just staring at herself, lost deep in thought� until Shinigami spoke again

�So? What�s your answer?�

��

�You�re still not sure?�

�It�s just� I�m not sure of what are you expecting me to do once I�m there��

�Nothing� He said, making her look at him, confused �Just live your life� and, besides� you�ll do what I need you to do on your own, so there�s no point in worrying�

�But how do I know I�ll be happier than in my previous life?� Her eyes now looked sad

�You don�t know� but I do, and if you do what I expect you to, you will be happy�

She thought about it� on one hand, she could say no and go back to her body, and keep living on her lame world back there� on the other hand, she could say yes, and start all over in that other dimension� even if she didn't know if she'd be happier or not, considering the dimension she was about to go to� well, she had nothing to lose�
�� Ok� She said after a while �I�ll do it, I accept your proposal�

Shinigami just smiled� or grinned� it really didn�t make any difference �Good� He said, and placing a finger on her forehead, he left her unconscious, but caught her before she fell to the ground

�Oh, I forgot to tell you� the memories of your past life and your encounter with me will be erased and remain only in your subconscious�� He said grinning, knowing that she could no longer hear him�

All right, that�s it for the introduction� and yes, I�m well aware that I didn�t mention the girl�s name, I did it on purpose. The action will start next chapter, though you probably won�t recognise most of the things� but I promise I�ll update soon!!
