Tenzo cast his eyes disinteresting over his untouched platter of food. Any
lingering thoughts that remained from a famished appetite, were lost, as he
mentally reviewed the news given to him from the elder shinobi; before reverting
his attention back to the white-haired frog sannin sitting patiently at arm's
length from across him, his unblinking eyes never wavering from the old-time
legends worn driven face, as he tried to remain level-headed for appearances
sakes, in case someone in the shadows was watching them and waiting for him to
slip up of his usual pretext.
But with this developing news, how could Tenzo really compete with that and stay
immune? I
mean, come on. This changed his opinion *greatly* of how he revered his hero from
his senpai's younger days as anbu.
"I see," acknowledged Tenzo, minutely, much to Jiraiya's chagrin.
Tenzo carefully tucked away the missing details of Hatake Kakashi's untold past,
in which Jiraiya so entrusted him to, in his memory box, where he stored
all remnants of his senpai's involvement for later examination. It's not like he
was obsessed with the legendary copy ninja. Borderline, some would say, if they looked
into his interest but in truth, he was only looking out for the best interest of
his senpai, considering Kakashi was very elusive when it came to divulging
information about himself. Much to his dismay, except when they had an
opportunity to work duo missions. Of course, as him being a trainee under his senpai's tutelage.
"He must of had a hard childhood," spoke Tenzo softly, "without the guidance and
support of his father and the tender love of his mother, by their unbecoming
deaths. It almost reminds me of my own, with when,. . . " he trailed off,
reflecting his own earlier childhood years, as his face closed off in
bitterness.
Closing his eyes from the sour reminder, Jiraiya lifted his teacup steadily to
his lips and took a generous sip of the cooling dark-brown liquid, as the name
Orochimaru, flickered through his mind eye, by the slight emotionless break
in Tenzo's usual calm voice.
Placing the half-empty teacup back onto the table beside him, Jiraiya reopened
his eyes and recognized the withdrawn signs the kid was giving off, cursing his
former teammate to bring trauma to this unique young man.
Jiraiya knew, if he didn't tread carefully, he would surely lose Tenzo to his
earlier darker days, as an unwilling captive under Orochimaru's ward, during his
old-teammate's less remarkable and treachery years that marked as a cornerstone
to the end of his and Orochimaru's friendship, when he had found out from the
Third Hokage 15 years ago.
As for Tenzo, his mind began to drift to a time he rather erase from his core
than be subjected to *revisit*, when he heard a bellowing laugh that was
remotely similar to his pale faced captor's, as his attention skittered to his
left, where his unfocused eyes crossed with a group of patrons, between their
middle-aged years, being lead to their respected seats by the house hostess, as
he unattendedly reflected on his own dugged up past brought on by Jiraiya. Of
his upbringing and the horror that accompanied it from the memories of his life
in the underground prison that Tenzo called home, as he became one of many: a
human experiment to a deranged man that demonstrated dark ambitions (with no
guilt whatsoever) for his inhuman treatment of them, to only unlock the secrets
of a forbidden jutsu of untold magnitude.
Tenzo's lips involuntarily curled down in a frown by the memory, as he thumbed
his sake cup unconsciously, as he lethargically relived being a guinea
pig to one of the scarier legendary sannin. Once a respected shinobi but now
feared and hunted by his own village, whom had twisted along the way, for his
own selfish advancements and goals, now a S-class criminal in the bingo book for
all assassin's to exterminate upon sight.
"In lite of that," continued Tenzo, "I suppose I won't be so hard on him, ...but
more supportive of any suggestions he might put out. After all, Kakashi-sempai
is my senior and has more knowledge in this case. It isn't right for me to
over-rule him in front of his students (a very unlike Tenzo thing: except lately
with their new charge) or downsize his judgment of what's best for Naruto."
Miffed that Tenzo took it better than he expected, since Tenzo could be as
headstrong as Naruto, Jiraiya nodded, stumped to learn he didn't have to argue
his case any further, when Tenzo placidly arrived where he had been leading him
to, with everything he said, to explain Kakashi's roundabout way of handling
things. Well, with Naruto, and other things, if he was honest with himself.
Kakashi always did have an ulterior motive behind everything he did, said,
performed,...the list was endless but enough to give him a headache at times.
Still, Jiraiya worried over Kakashi. He's seems to always be pushing himself
further and in the wrong direction. With Naruto, that could be bad news, since
Naruto is still developing as a ninja and we can't have Kakashi floundering
somewhere where returns weren't an option. He cared too much to let that happen.
That's why he was having a talk with Tenzo. These days, Tenzo see's more of
Kakashi than he does. If unable to do something yourself, pass it along to
someone as capable.
Actually, if he thought more on it, Jiraiya had been also preparing himself to
deal with some sort of baggage issue, Tenzo might of had with Kakashi.
But considering the turn of events, this worked out better in the long run for
the both of them. Hell, even Naruto benefited. Maybe he'll set something up with
Tsunade later down the road so that Kakashi and Tenzo would have to work
together, like in the their anbu years. Maybe by then, Kakashi will get the guts
to have a real conversation with the kid, that didn't involve work or the going
about of Naruto's advancement training. Since sharing me-you *things* were an
issue with Kakashi, for some reason or the other.
But seeing that this was off his need-to-do-list, Jiraiya could now go about
discussing the other matter at hand that piqued his attention into actual
involvement. Without gaining Kakashi's permission, of course, since he would
flat-out tell him to stay out of his business.
First thing first, he needed to tie up any loose ends from his little talk with
Tenzo, that might still be left open, from earlier.
"I'm glad you see it as that. Because, if the dispute between you two didn't
clear up soon, Yamato, I'm afraid Kakashi would of had no other choice but
report it to the Hokage's attention and that might of resulted in your immediate
dismissal,... or not," Jiraiya left open, shrugging; when in fact he did not
really know if Tsunade would reassign someone else to overlook Team Kakashi,
while Kakashi recovered in the hospital from his injuries after the Gaara
retrieval mission success, "Just keep to your words the next time you run into
him and it'll all blow over. Kakashi's a pretty forgiving guy."
Tenzo nodded stiffly, defeat evident in the slump of his shoulders. But he
couldn't deny it. Kakashi was a forgiving guy, unless you really knock
blows with him. Then, he's unreasonable and annoying. Let's not forget perverted
nature, if he's in the mood and there's his sadistic side that likes to shine
through, at the most eye sore moment. Ah, how could he ever forget those
times,... and before Jiraiya could get another word in, Tenzo bypassed him.
"But,-" inquired Tenzo, butting his way in, as his finger tapped at his lip in
thought, "there's something that's been troubling me since this meeting you've
requested from me, Jiraiya-sama. Besides that you want to clear up any
'antagonist' feelings between Kakashi and myself." Which there really
weren't. (Again, the problem with outsider observers when it involved
Kakashi and himself. As that now is becoming a sensitive spot when anyone gets
mislead by his true intentions.) It was rather, tiring really and he'd been
through this, so many times before. Couldn't these guys look elsewhere to
prod, poke, and piece together the psycho-mumble jumble that's become his
life.
Shit, Jiraiya knew what was coming next. It was almost predictable. Tenzo was
back in interrogation mode. And hell, his eyes could be so creepy to the point
where he looked at you like some escaped loon hyped up on too much meds, to bug
out that much. But then, Tenzo only got that look when he was really angry or
wanted to be taken very seriously. Except, opposite to what Jiraiya expected in
reaction by the young anbu kid, Tenzo stared at him with impersonal eyes.
"Why are you telling me this now, Jiraiya," asked Tenzo dejectively, murmuring
loud enough to be heard over the background noises audible in the room, "Why not
when the Third Hokage partnered up Kakashi and myself during his time in the
anbu. Years ago, when this 'issue' as you labeled, evolved and included the
entanglement of others. Why not when it didn't blow into something where neither
of us would do anything to reconcile with the other. Why now?" demanded Yamato,
voice cold and conflicted, "It isn't just because Naruto got dragged into our
trifle,... or is it that simple," he sighed, giving up. He didn't want to look
into Kakashi's motives anymore. (Well he did but not too deeply.) Or the motives
Jiraiya-sama was suggesting for his sempai.
Jiraiya's face softened by the confusion and anger evident in Tenzo's voice,
because of his crappy timing.
He let out a sigh of solitude, to strengthen himself in his resolve of revealing
this important information that involved Kakashi's character for Tenzo to
understand, "It wasn't my place then,. ." he paused, hoping the younger man
didn't take his next words the wrong way.
Believe him, he's tried.
He's tried so hard to bring Kakashi closer from over the edge but the jounin
kept everyone at bay. Even the friends he permitted himself into having after
swearing never to get close to anyone after the Fourth's impendable death by the
nine-tail attack.
"and,.. at the time, Kakashi didn't need anyone. He was very self-sufficient."
"And now, you're saying Kakashi needs someone. I don't see how this
involves me. I respect him but any further, our relationship is on a work
basis." Which was a lie but on Kakashi's side, it could very well be true.
Tenzo sighed wearily in his head but kept up appearances. He didn't want Jiraiya
to find out that he's always kept an extra eye on Kakashi (covertly, of course)
and picked up on his loner behavior during their years together.
"Yamato, I wouldn't be bringing this up if Kakashi didn't show an interest in
you, as late, and not just because you happened to be assigned his Team. Even
though there are some things he disagrees upon with you, he still likes how you
handle his former students when he is unable to reach out to them. How you take
it upon yourself to try to work out the problems that arise within the group,
when you're not obligated to. You could say he has this, leap of faith,
in you right now and your abilities to know what's best for them and everyone
involved.. He already knows you're a competent leader. You were partners until
he was pulled out of the anbu. Understanding this, there's no wonder he views
you as this reliable friend and consultant Naruto and the others could turn to
in their time of need. If say, he's not around anymore. It proves more how
you're different from the rest. That you care and caring isn't a requirement
when assign to these sort of missions. Kakashi's found, he like's this side of
you. The part you tend to hide, except when you're with these children."
Tenzo didn't know what to say to that. For Kakashi to learn all that about him
in the short while, since seeing each other from their split partnership in the
anbu. But if that was true, why didn't Kakashi-sempai say this outright to him
when they were alone. Why send Jiraiya-sama? As far as he knew, there was
nothing going on between Jiraiya-sama and Kakashi that would result in this
forgement to sway his opinion of how he felt about Kakashi.
Except now, Tenzo found it hard remaining mad at him (since he was for one
reason and another), if that was truly how his sempai felt about him and not
what Jiraiya wants him to think.
If that's so, then maybe for the first time since informing his involvement with
his Team from the Fifth Hokage to Kakashi, Yamato will go visit Kakashi for
real. Like he has been meaning to but never had, since his courage was funny
around his sempai.
Not as a co-worker but as a possible friend, which Tenzo would like but kept
what he had, in fear Kakashi would say otherwise, since his sempai was strange
in those regards. And maybe more,...if Kakashi would open up but he wasn't going
to push it. With Kakashi, he have to take baby steps or spook him into
non-existence or unsocial terms, except for assignments. Tenzo rather not liked
that and hoped that would never be, as his sempai was a meaningful figure in his
life.
Still, something needed to be done, since he couldn't stand them behaving this
way with each other much longer and what better way to extend something, than in
invitation and he had been given one by Jiraiya and he wasn't going to waste it.
If he did, where would he been then.
Home but without a home to feel happy in.
