Neatly folding a checkered blanket and
pushing it to the bottom of an old wicker basket that he had gotten from Raidou,
Iruka mentally went over his To Do list. Naruto and Kakashi were buying their
snacks for tonight and needed to pick up Sasuke for the boys’ sleepover around
six... He still needed to put the picnic basket together, making sure that he
put enough silverware in for everyone plus napkins since Iruka knew that Naruto would end up needing
them.
“I really hope the fireworks are good this
year...” The teacher said to himself, sighing and walking into the kitchen.
“Last year’s were pathetic and ended way too quickly. Naruto didn’t even fall
asleep before they went off.”
As was tradition for the Hatake-Umino
household on New Years’ Eve, they would go to Konoha’s riverside to select a
good area to sit and enjoy the beautiful firework show that always went off at
twelve in the morning, Naruto usually falling asleep around ten and getting
woken up by Kakashi five minutes prior to blast-off. After the show was over,
the three of them would say their New Year Resolution, followed by lighting a
sparkler held in their hands, and once everyone has cited their wish, would
yell “Happy New Years, Konoha!”
This year, however, that tradition was
changing a bit. Naruto had befriended the youngest Uchiha boy after his family had
moved from Oto and signed him up at Sarutobi
Academy. Sasuke, though
quiet and shy around strangers, was the best thing that had ever happened to
Naruto, Iruka believed.
Their son, he knew, had doubts that Kakashi
and Iruka were telling the truth when they said they would never send him back
to the orphanage, having had that told to him three times prior by his previous
families; however, after Sasuke had first arrived and the boys become friends, the
two men finally saw that Naruto’s outlook was changing.
Opening a cabinet door, Iruka pulled out
four plastic plates, musing on how indignant his adopted son had become once
the show was over. Even Kakashi had been disappointed that he had missed his opportunity
to tease Iruka with reading his...literature around their son. Heck, even the
city’s mayor, Tsunade, had complained (after firing that last firework company,
of course, but that was neither here nor there)!
Pushing a piece of hair behind his ear,
Iruka put the plates down, reaching out to grab four plastic cups and placing
them beside the dishes. Moving to the side a bit, he opened a drawer, taking
out four pairs of silverware and a plastic-wrapped package of napkins, just in
case.
Carefully picking everything up, the
brown-haired man slowly made his way back to the picnic basket, neatly putting
everything inside once there.
Now, he just needed to wait for his guys
and make sure they actually bought what he had told them to.

Kakashi pouted, rubbing his sore arm as he
shot teary eyes at his lover, “Why’d you hit me, Ruka?”
Iruka glared with a frown, “Eyes on the
road, Kakashi. You’re driving and the boys are in the back, do you really need
to read that trash now?”
“I think that would kill him, Iruka,”
Naruto snickered, lifting his face from his new Nintendo DS. Sasuke just turned
the page of his book, shaking his head in fond exasperation at this odd
family’s antics. Their family might not be anything like mine, but I liked them
as they are. He thought, sneaking a look at the blond boy beside him with a
small smile.
Kakashi’s mismatched eyes looked at Naruto
through the rear-view mirror, “We don’t need anything from the peanut gallery,
brat.”
The blond childishly stuck out his tongue
in retaliation.

Soon after arriving to the riverbank and
choosing the best area for the show, everyone settled down and ate the dinner
that Iruka had ordered Kakashi and Naruto to buy. Quickly, the small group of
people that had already been there grew until most of the riverbank was covered
with people, the dark sky showing every single star as time passed.
As always, Naruto had fallen asleep; Sasuke
soon joining him after Kakashi said something to the older boy and moved him to
be closer to their blond-haired son. Iruka had a small idea that Sasuke had
more feelings than just friendship for Naruto, but pushed it aside; they were
only ten-years-old now and both had the rest of their lives ahead of them.
After a gorgeous show where many colours
were displayed, even new ones of orange and blue that always seemed to pop up
together. After twenty solid minutes, Tsunade wished everyone a Happy New Years
over a microphone before going home, a number of families following.
The Hatake-Umino household plus one stayed,
Sasuke having been told of their tradition days prior to the actual event.
Naruto had told both his guardians that his friend was looking forward to it,
having said that his own family just stay up to see the fireworks over he
television before going to bed.
Iruka cleared his throat, pulling the
borrowed picnic basket closer to him and reached inside for a small, plastic
package. Taking out four sparklers and giving one to everyone, the brown-haired
teacher began talking, “I’ll start and show Sasuke how this goes, alright
guys?”
His family members nodded, straightened as
they thought out their resolutions. Sasuke, after noticing their actions, did
the same.
“Okay,” he said, clearing his throat again.
“I, Iruka Umino, declare that I will try to lessen the amount of yelling I do
toward my students.”
Picking up a barbecue lighter, the only one
that the two men would allow the two boys to handle, Iruka lit his sparkler,
holding it away from him and handing the fire-starter over to Kakashi.
Getting his sparkler ready, Kakashi
grinned, “I, Kakashi Hatake, declare that my New Years’ Resolution is
unsuitable for the boys’ ears.” Getting another hit in the arm from his lover,
the gray-haired man snickered as he lit his sparkler.
Naruto glared at his guardian as he took
the lighter away from him, “You’re a butthead, Kakashi. Anyways...I, Naruto
Umino, declare that I will try to eat more vegetables, even though they’re
gross!” Lighting his sparkler with a huge grin, he handed the mechanism to his
friend, Sasuke having been quiet since being awoken.
Taking the plastic utensil from the blond
boy, Sasuke began, “I, Sasuke Uchiha, declare that I will try to get better
grades in Art, even though I think Deidara-sensei is weird,” followed by
lighting his own sparkler, the young boy handed the lighter back to Iruka, who
dropped it back into the basket.
As the sparklers went out, all four males
bellowed, “Happy New Years, Konoha!”
-~-
As cleaning up, the two men carried the
young boys to the car, carefully buckling them as Naruto and Sasuke drifted
back into the Dream World and moved to get in the front.
Iruka, who had let his curiousity get the
better of him as he thought over Kakashi’s resolution, leaned over to his
boyfriend and poked him in the ribs. “Hey, Kashi, what was your New Years’
Resolution? The boys are asleep, you can tell me now.”
Kakashi grinned, leering at his lover as he
looked at him. “To see how many different positions I can get you to do with
me.”
“KAKASHI!”
End.
