Umino Iruka wandered slowly through the hospital, smiling once in a while at a child that could see him. As a person not of the mortal world, it was generally normal for people to be unable to see him in his spirit form. Children were more open to that, and so were people closer to death. But Iruka could feel the healthy, vibrant spirits of the children around him and he knew that none of them were going to follow him home by accident.
He stopped and kneeled down by the chair of a boy who had a bandage covering both of his eyes. The boy turned his head toward Iruka but otherwise stayed completely still. Iruka smiled gently. �Hey. How are you doing?�
There was silence, then, �Fine, I guess.�
�What are you here for?�
�I�m getting my eyes checked. The doctors said that if they don�t get any better that I�ll have to go to America and have surgery again. I don�t mind if I have to move though.� The boy brightened up slightly. �I�ll be able to visit with my cousin while I�m there and I haven�t seen her for a long time.�
�Well, if you have to go to America for surgery or not, I do hope you get to visit with your cousin more.�
The young boy blushed slightly. �Thank you sir.�
Iruka grinned and ruffled the boy�s hair as he stood but his attention was quickly caught by a children�s doctor as he made his way down the hall in a hurry. Iruka has watched the doctor many times over the year and each time the doctor acted calm and collected. This time, though, the doctor had a near frantic look on his face that seemed to suck Iruka in to the turmoil in his mind.
The spirit followed the doctor into the emergency room, slipping through the doors before they closed, and watched in slight horror at the scene before him. A young boy, no more than eight years old, was lying on a gurney, his blue eyes staring blankly at the ceiling above. Nurses worked on the boy to remove the clothes that were in the way but Iruka knew that it was too late anyway. The body no longer held any glow that spoke of the boy�s spirit, but he couldn�t tell the doctors that.
Instead, he looked around and found the spirit sitting against a wall, fox tails twitching behind him, crying into his hands, completely frightened of what was going on. Iruka slowly walked up to the boy, holding out his hands in a comforting gesture.
�My name is Iruka.�
The boy looked up and eyed him warily, wiping away the tears off of a cheek with three scar marks. �Naruto.�
�Do you know why you�re here?�
Naruto looked over to the lifeless body and the people around it. �I�m dead.�
�Do you know why you�re dead?� Iruka went straight for the point, believing that it was best to be blunt in most situations.
�No. I was playing with papa when everything started to hurt. It still hurts, Ruka.�
Iruka gathered the child in his arms and sat on the floor, humming softly and hoping that he was able to calm the boy down. In seconds he relaxed and in minutes he stopped shivering. He only looked up when a young man and woman rushed into the room and stopped short, the woman crying against the taller male.
�Would you like to speak with them?�
Naruto nodded slightly and Iruka stood up with the boy still in his arms and took a few steps closer. One tiny hand reached out and lightly touched the blond spiky hair of the man. �I�m sorry papa. I wanted to stay with you more but I can�t. Please tell mama I�m sorry and that I�ll m-miss her.�
The boy began to cry again and Iruka held on to him, humming an old lullaby and rocking him in his arms. He had just walked out of the hospital as a new ambulance stopped in front of the doors. Iruka vaguely noted the person in this ambulance with a frown. There were no injuries noticeable, and yet blood seemed to be everywhere. The spirit, while showing the characteristics of one close to death, was firmly anchored in the body it belonged to.
When he was far enough away from the hospital, Iruka opened a portal into the other realm, feeling the drain on his own powers to make sure that no unwanted spirits followed. And with one look back at the hospital, the young boy�s spirit in his arms, he stepped into what he hoped would be the boy�s sanctuary.

�Good morning Iruka-san,� a young woman greeted him.
�Morning Kurenai-sensei, Kiba-kun.� Iruka smiled at the young boy and his dog that was at Kurenai�s side. �Off for your morning break?�
�Yes. Kiba-kun�s levels were starting to get low so we decided to rest for a while.� Kurenai peered closely at the child asleep in Iruka�s arms. �Who do you have?�
�He just died a short while ago, I�m afraid. This is the first time I�ve seen a spirit with Guardian characteristics, though.�
�Strange� Well, take him to the person who oversees this realm. He might have Guardian qualities, but that won�t make him a Guardian. Strange for a mortal�s spirit, though�� Kurenai walked off with a thoughtful look on her face with Kiba following her, looking back at Iruka and Naruto before disappearing around a corner.
Iruka continued on towards his destination, starting to hum again as Naruto shifted in his arms, starting to wake up. After a few minutes, bright blue eyes looked up at Iruka before turning to look around.
�Where are we?� Naruto asked with a note of awe in his voice.
�We�re in the spirit world, kit.�
�Kit?�
Iruka grinned at the child. �Between your scars on your cheeks and your tails, you can easily be a fox.�
�I have tails?� Naruto turned in Iruka�s arms, trying to catch sight of said tails. Iruka swung Naruto down to the floor and the boy whirled around, finally grabbing onto one tail. �Wow��
Iruka began to walk again and the boy rushed forward, grabbing on to Iruka�s arm. �Now you have to go see Tsunade-sama. She�ll be able to tell you where you need to go.�
�You mean I won�t be able to stay with you?�
�Maybe, maybe not. But I will tell you this. No matter where you may have to stay, I�ll come and visit you when I can.�
Naruto looked uncertain for a moment but then nodded. �All right.� He looked up at the young woman that appeared before them and reached out to take her hand.
�Be good for Shizune-san, Naruto.�
�Thank you, Ruka.�

Naruto didn�t know what to think of the world around him. Something in him told him to trust Iruka, and he had no problem with that, but now he was following the woman, Shizune-san, to somewhere for what he heard as �judgment.� The people they passed in the hall whispered it to each other as they looked upon Naruto and the small boy just clutched a red-orange foxtail in one hand tighter while the other hand didn�t dare let go of Shizune�s.
�This is where I leave you, Naruto-kun. You just go through those doors there and talk to the lady behind the desk.�
Naruto let go of her hand, which migrated to his tail, and he looked back up at her a bit uncertainly. �Will it hurt?�
Shizune smiled and ruffled his blond hair. �No. While Tsunade-sama might be a bit scary, she won�t do anything to hurt you. She just likes to talk loudly.� She opened the door a bit and Naruto went in after one last look.
The door shut behind him with a soft click and immediately a voice growled out, �That better be you, Sakura, or there�s hell to pay!�
Naruto�s throat closed up on him and he couldn�t talk, fear instantly filling him at the sheer amount of power contained in the room. Shizune�s words came back to him, though, and after a deep breath, he walked around the desk to see who sat there behind the paperwork that was piled high on top.
An ink brush was suddenly brandished into his face and Naruto froze again with no kind words coming back. Wide blue eyes stared up into a surprised face framed by blond hair and he could feel the tail in his hand twitch at the treatment is was receiving from the tight grip.
�Who are you?�
�U-Uzumaki Naruto.�
The ink brush was carefully set back down and the woman turned in her chair to give her full attention to the young boy. �Okay. How old are you?�
�I�m eight��
The woman smiled and while it didn�t reassure Naruto, he did feel a bit less threatened. �How did you get here?�
Naruto shrugged and looked away slightly. ��m not sure. Ruka picked me up from the hospital and I fell asleep. When I woke up, I was in a different place, but Ruka left me with Zune-san and she told me to come in here.�
There was a moment of silence, and then, �What do you mean when you said �Ruka� picked you up?�
�I died and Ruka found me.�
The woman froze in her chair and while Naruto wasn�t able to tell what she was thinking, she was thinking quickly, nonetheless. She apparently came to a conclusion because she pulled over a blank piece of paper and dipped the ink brush into ink again. �Can you describe �Ruka� for me?�
�He was really tall and has long brown hair and a scar over his nose!�
�Ahh�� She wrote something down on the paper but looked up when the door shut softly. �Sakura?�
�Yes, Tsunade-sama?�
�I got another errand for you.�
�I just got back from the last one! What do you want� me�� Sakura walked around the edge of the desk and her words stopped when she saw Naruto. She crouched down so that she was eye level with him and the smile she gave him was warm and friendly. �Hello! I�m Sakura. I help Tsunade-sama with things around here.�
Naruto started back, not knowing what to do, but Tsunade answered for him. �This is Naruto-kun and he just arrived here today. I would like for you to take him and find Umino Iruka.�
The young boy looked up at her with hope and Tsunade-chuckled. �You get to stay with him for the time being until I can talk to him. You are to be a Guardian and you will live around here until you are assigned.�
Sakura stood and held out her hand, waiting for Naruto to grab it, and led him from the room. Before the door shut, he leaned in far enough to say, �Thank you, baa-san!�

Okies, AU Fanfic, first chapter. What do you think? I�m not sure what I want the title to be, and I was thinking �Hogosha� which means guardian in Japanese. I can use some help on this though. Help on the summary would be good too�
Basically test chapter. It will be a NaruSasuNaru, since I can see that pairing both ways, with some KakaIru on the side. Plus other various mentioned pairings.
