Uzumaki Naruto half slept, half sat as the bus sped down the
nearly deserted countryside highway. This was not the fist time. Heck, it
wasn’t even the second, or the third. This was the norm, this constant bouncing
around from one place to the next. He always seemed to be on some bus headed to
some place; where he would live until whoever had taken him in, got sick of him
and passed him on to some other distant relative.
He had lived in so many different places, that he long ago
gave up on hopes and expectations. Everything simply was. At this point he was
just happy to have a full belly and a place to sleep. He had experienced plenty
of days were he had neither. Uncles that didn’t feed him, Aunties that treated
him like a slave and had him sleep outside with the dogs in the back yard.
That is what Naruto knew, that is how he had grown up. But
he could have had it worse. Much worse. He reminded himself. Naruto
always spent a few minutes a day reminding himself of all the worse things that
could happen. He could be deaf, or have his face melt away because of some
disease that he could have gotten from not bathing enough, he could be blind,
or be a eunuch. Yeah the eunuch thing is the worst. He thought with a
half smile.
Naruto’s list of worse things was perhaps the only thing
that kept him sane these days. Particularly on days like today when he didn’t
know what to expect. I could have really bad acne and smell like used gym
socks. He added.
He stared at the window watching the trees go by. This was a
long trip. It had taken almost three days. A lot longer than any of his other
moves. He tried to not wonder what this Tsunade was like. He had long ago
learned to never go in with expectations, particularly good ones. It always
hurt too much to expect anything. Hopes were for other people. Not him.
I could have a funny accent. … Wait! I do have an accent.
Shit. He sighed. As long as she was nothing like the snake bastard Naruto
could survive. That man had shortened Naruto’s list by quite a lot. As long as
she isn’t like that. Naruto shivered as the memories surfaced. He
breathed deeply trying to shake the thoughts. He counted to 10 and began
thinking of his most favorite thing in the entire world. Ramen.
There was nothing like ramen, it was the ultimate food. It
was comforting and smoothing. And it was always there for him. Ramen had kept
him from starving on more than one occasion. Yeah, Ramen is great. That
made Naruto happy. He could even vaguely smell the sweet aroma of his favorite
miso ramen.
Yes, he could really smell the ramen, a lot. He opened his
bright blue eyes just as the bus stopped, right next to a little shop that
sold, Naruto couldn’t believe it, ramen. If only I had some cash. Naruto
sighed. (He is doing that a lot today.)
Naruto listened as the bus driver called out the name of the
stop. There was one more stop to go, and then he would be there. Were ever
there was exactly. It wasn’t as if he had been given much information.
He had been sitting on the porch when his cousin, actually
wasn’t sure if the man was his cousin or not, handed his the bus pass and told
him to get out. Naruto hadn’t argued, he went to the garage, grabbed his things
and walked the ten miles to the bus depot. No questions asked. All he had was a
name and address.
Tsunade.
His first thought was that she must be from his father’s
side of the family. She had a strange name. His dad’s side always seemed to
have strange names, and strange personalities. His mother’s side, on the other
hand, had very normal names like Steve or Bill, but they were all seriously
deranged. Actually deranged could have been an understatement.
The women had a sort of superior air about her as she walked
out of the small boutique and towards her expensive looking car. Naruto smiled
his best smile and intercepted the women.
“Um, ‘scuse me?” He asked as he approached her. She stared
at him disdainfully and attempted to sidestep the blond boy. “Hey…” Naruto
exclaimed, his voice rising ever so slightly. The women visibly filched.
“Listen punk.” She said in a voice that seemed like a cross
between a lecture and a halfhearted cry for help. “I don’t know what you are
trying to pull, but that doesn’t work around here. This is a good town and we
don’t need kids like you roaming the streets causing trouble.” She looked at
Naruto seriously. “You should get out of here, and go back to were ever you
came from.”
Naruto only smiled bigger. “That is fine, but can you tell
me where the Konoha Academy is first?”
The women blinked.
“Are you a student there?” she asked, her voice
punctuating the ‘you’.
Naruto shrugged. He
didn't look that bad did he? OK, it had
been a few days since he last bathed, and his clothes were far from new. Did he really look like some kind of
troublemaker?
"Not exactly."
He replied. Flashing his biggest
fox grin.
The woman eyed him somewhat suspiciously, trying to figure
out what was up with this kid.
"Fine." She said, a
sense of defeat permeating her voice.
Raising her hand up, she pointed down the street. "Keep going down the street for about 2
miles than you will reach the school."
"Thank you very much ma'am." Naruto promptly
turned, walking purposefully across the street, and grabbed his bag. Smiling again, as to make sure that he was
putting on the proper show for the woman, he headed down the street. 2 miles
wasn't much of a walk. He had walked much
farther on many occasions, carrying much heavier things than a half-filled
duffel.
It wasn't long before he first set eyes on the school, and
realized that this place was much different than any place he'd seen
before. The manicured lawns, the tree-lined
pathways, and the way the birds seem to sing in the air; made the place look
like some sort of fairytale world.
Konoha Academy was unlike anything he had ever seen before.
Wow. It's huge.
The school looked like a cross between Buckingham palace, and
the historical section of some quaint tourist destination. He could see little groups of people going
to and fro. He presumed to classes that
were too complicated for him even to even contemplate.
Naruto began walking down the elaborate driveway. He wasn't there sure where to go. He was at the school, but where the hell
this Tsunade person. Naruto grumbled a
little. trying to think of exactly where to go and what to do.
He looked around, his eyes darting back and forth, in an
attempt to ascertain some sort of bearing upon the situation. As he scanned the topography of the
driveway, He noticed a man.
The man seemed very intent upon his task. In his hands he held a shovel, next to
haven't set a small tree. Naruto
allowed himself to wonder what go to an exactly the man was doing. Why was he planting trees? To Naruto it seemed rather redundant.
Don't they have enough trees around here? Naruto walked up to the
man.
"Hi there!"
Naruto exclaimed. He allowed a
bouncy sort of attitude to permeate his voice.
It was always good to be friendly, or least pretend to be friendly.
The man looked up from his task. "Yes, can I help you?"
He asked.
Naruto scratched his head.
"Yeah um, you know where Tsunade is? I'm kind of looking for her."
"Wait kid, are you Uzumaki Naruto?" He asked, "Tsunade-sama asked me an eye
out for you."
Naruto replied with a somewhat dumb look. "Really?"
"I'll take that as a yes." He smiled a friendly smile.
Naruto nodded.
"I’m Naruto. Believe it!”
Pulling one of his gardening gloves off he shook Naruto’s
hand. “Sarutobi, Asuma a pleasure.” Asuma looked towards the School buildings.
“Well, I better not hold you up. I am sure Tsunade-sama is expecting you. If
you just keep heading down this causeway you will hit the main entrance. Just
go on inside there, to your right you will see the entrances to the main
offices. Tell one of the nice ladies your name, and they will tell the
headmistress that you are here.”
Naruto thanked Asuma for the directions and headed down the
sidewalk. That guy isn’t so bad. He walked at a leisurely pace, not
trying to prevent the inevitable, but, ok he was stalling. But, Who could
really blame him. His life hadn’t exactly endorsed friendly family
relationships.
