A/N: Okay, I almost don’t belive I’m writing this for several reasons. 1) I don’t believe Jiraiya is gay, although there is possibility fr something alng these lines, 2) there is simply no way to give this a happy ending, and 3) I don’t really write naruto fiction, especially not these guys. But I’m doin’ it here ^__^! Okay, so this is just a little scenario that crept into my head an wouldn’t leave.

It was heartening to see Naruto finally letting go of Sasuke a bit. It would have been heatbreaking to see him give up completely on finding his friend, but it was nice to see that the blond had realized that he needed to have his own life even while Sasue was gone. It was surprising, although upon relfection perhaps it should not have been, to find that life came in the form of a previously maniacal redheaded sand-nin.

Jiraiya was leaning against a tree at the outdor wedding reception as he watched his blond protoge. Naruto was sitting at the overly long picnic table that was being used for the wedding guests. It had been covered in red and white cloth for the occasion. Naruto was sitting beside his boyfriend, Gaara of the Desert. Their romance had come as much as a surprise as that of the newly married couple, Kankuro and Sakura. Jiraiya had never worried that Sakura would not be able to let go of Sasuke like Naruto. Tsunade had, but Jiraiya knew that the pink-haired kunoichi was far too much like her mentor to allow that to happen. She was smarter than she looked.

Naruto, on the other hand, was very much like Jiraiya. Although he seemed to learn a little more quickly. Watching Naruto, his arm around his boyfriend’s waist as he exchanged the strawberries on his plate for Gaara’s mushrooms, Jiraiaya couldn’t help but think of his own lost chances at that sort of happiness. It was clear, at least to him, that Naruto would stay with Gaara for the rest of his life, possibly even giving up his dream of becoming Hokage for him.

Jiraiya’s own life might have turned out very differently if he could have made that descision for Orochimaru, or if Orochimaru had been willing to make it for him. It seeed so far away, those days when they were all young genin training together. Although Jiraiya’s eyes had always been on those of the fairer sex, his male team mate had made far too enticing a target. Not to mention the danger involved in pursuing Tsunade. But Orochimaru had made it clear that he liked it when Jiraiya watched him. Later he made it clear that he liked it when the other boy touched him, as well. They had been so close, closer than Jiraiya had ever felt with another man, and yet he managed to miss the signs of his lover’s spiral into madness.

The white-haired man could have followed Orochimaru even as his mind circled into insanity, but he had chosen the path of good. He was never certain exactly what it was that Orochimaru needed so badly to go after that he had left him but it had hurt so much when he had. To wake up in the middle of the night and find his lover missing, only to discover that he had left of his own will. That he would not come back might have been something Jiraiya could have dealt with. He might have been willing to follow the other man, but that Orochimaru had convinced himself that Jiraiya was a threat, that he would eentually have to kill him ... that had been more painful thatn anything else.

But Jiraiya had never forgiven himself for letting the other sannin fall in the first place. He just knew that if he had realized what was happening sooner, that he could have saved him. Orochimaru never would have become ... what he had been. Of course it was to late now. Now there were only two sannin left and only Tsunade seemed to have a purpose.

He had taken his shot with her as well, much later on in their lives. They had found themselves far to well-matched and mutually ended things. They were to much alike to ever be able to have the kind of relationship either would have liked. Now it seemed likely that neither would ever have it.

Jiraiya had long ago contented himself to never settling down. He loved the variety of the young women he could still charm into bed and that, his books, and the occasional traingin session with Naruto were enough for him. But every now and again he was struck by a fit of melancholy, like he had been just now. He knew that the best shot at happiness he had ever had was dead. He knew it because there had never been another man. Jiraiya really was nt interested in them. He liked women far too much. It had only ever been the one man.

“You okay in there?” Tsunade’s voice interrupted his thoughts.

“Hm? Oh, yeah. I was just thinking that maybe ‘Chi’s craziness was contagious.” Jiraiya replied, giving his friend a half-grin.

“No.” Tsunade confirmed. “If it had been, you would have been done for long ago. You’re a fool, but not crazy.”

“Ah, gee, thanks.” Jiraiya replied, sarcastically.

“Anytime.” Tsunade answered, smiling. “You should go join in the festivities. Maybe go save Kankuro from Temari. I think she’s been lecturing her brother on the perils marriage for at least fifteen minutes. Although I can’t imagine what she’s actually telling him. Sakura is nothing like Shikamaru.”

“Where’s the blushing bride, then?” Jiraiya ased, looking around.

“Over there.” Tsunade pointed at the table where Gaara and Naruto were sitting. Sakura was seated across from them, laughing as Naruto spoke and Gaara remained quiet. One could almost make out a tiny smile on the redhead’s face.

Jiraiya pushed himself up from his spot against the tree. “I dunno, maybe I go see if I can put the moves on a few of those pretty little sand girls they brought along.” He grinned.

“If you hurt any of them, Temari will kill you.” Tsunade chuckled a bit. “Well, she’ll make you suffer, anyway.”

“Well, you could always do your part to keep me entertained.” Jiraiya said, still grinning.

Tsunade punched the man in the shoulder, looking both amused and annoyed. After watching him rub at the sore spot for a moment she said, “Ask me later.”

Jiraiya’s grin actually widened as Tsunade left to rejoin the party. Deciding he might as well do the same, he made his way toward the largest supply of sake.
