Summary
Sasuke’s selfishness was always the
cause of Naruto’s pain, but the brunette never intended any of it. Their friendship strained when he left on the
stipulations of avenging his clan, but now that he returned, he learned nothing
held importance over his relationship with Naruto. In return, Naruto would never let Sasuke go
again.
A Yearning Heart
Prologue
Sasuke’s POV***
Naruto... His serene face lay
motionless atop the jagged rocks. For a
moment I wondered if that frenzied fight really occurred. I remember how we fought as
children—habitually out of rivalry, if not hate for our opposing
personalities. However, Naruto and I
bonded though the quarrels and sharing of tents on long missions.
Accordingly,
I expected Naruto’s pursuit of me after I abandoned Konoha. Sakura’s weak protest at the gate resided to
that of a mosquito bite, but Naruto would present a bigger issue. He probably thought I departed unwillingly,
but actually I chose to leave. Orochimaru offered power, unattainable to me as I was then. Naruto naturally followed, oblivious to my betrayal.
Only
once he caught up, only once the battle of power began, did I realize the fault
of fostering ties. After all, my two
goals in life—the revival of my clan and eradication of the man who massacred
them—demanded for solitude to prevent others from holding me back.
With
that logic, Naruto, whose body still limply rests, should cease to hold life—his
death at my hands. Though, in the dusty
afternoon storm, clouds parted to envelope Naruto in a circle of light. The rays struggled to shine, their diameter diminishing
as the wind pressured ominous clouds to continue the march. When the ball of light decreased to a quarter
upon his forehead, I shifted uncomfortably.
Attentively I observed while the small beam ruefully disintegrated,
reminiscent of a soul, despite new patches of daylight opening.
“Naruto...”
Naruto!
He couldn’t be dead.
“I...”
I needed to convey my fondness. I never let anyone become close to me,
yet Naruto attached himself firmly in my heart and did it deviously so.
Pitt... Pitt... Pitt... Pitt...
The rain startled me and my thoughts
shattered into countless pieces, lost forever in my crevices of my mind. Instead
of my previous concern, uncertainties surfaced.
Why am I still here? Should I
be here? I won. Naruto
is...
“Urghh!” White flames lit
every single nerve in my body on fire. I clutched my arm tightly, cautious
of the searing tattoo. The muscles in my legs gave out and I coughed
blood onto the ground as I fell.
Naruto...
Inches
below my own face, his rested, after that spasm forced me to my hands and
knees. Why did he not open his eyes?
Why damn it! Why didn’t he aim
for my heart? How could someone be so
foolish—so foolish as to trust me?

Kakashi landed at the bottom of the rocky terrain.
His heartbeat quickened when he felt the presence of someone other than Pakkun, who was one step ahead of him and at the moment too
shocked to speak; the pug stood immobile for a second.
Naruto’s
body sprawled over Sasuke’s, both boys soaking wet. By the way Naruto lie upon Sasuke, Kakashi assumed Sasuke placed him there, for the blonde’s
arms fell awkwardly and his neck angled uncomfortably upon Sasuke’s
chest. All the while, the brunette clung to Naruto, arms around his back,
pressing him close, but trying not to crush the boy.
“Sasuke,”
Kakashi called with uncertainty.
The
Uchiha grimaced. His scent proving that tears,
not rain water, stained his cheeks. Mournfully the boy’s eyes opened, for
once clear and decipherable, but that candidness quickly fled leaving murky
depths.
Kakashi strode forward when he realized tears still rolled
freshly down Sasuke’s face. Carefully, he picked up Naruto, turning the
boy over in his arms. Pakkun approached,
listening intently for the sound of the blonde’s heartbeat. Sasuke sat up
shakily and waited for the words he dreaded.
“Naruto’s
alive.”
Sasuke
mouth parted, an inaudible gasp ripping from him. Kakashi inferred
Sasuke thought the blond dead already, but the sound of Naruto’s large intake of
air confirmed his existence to the group.
Sasuke’s
eyes searched Naruto’s as the boy slowly opened his blue ones.
“Sasuke,”
a simple and confused utterance slipped from Naruto’s lips before he closed his
eyes contentedly.
“Naruto! Open your eyes!” Kakashi
called, feeling a flash of the same helplessly from when his own comrade died.
Naruto’s
eyelids shot back, “Kakashi?” His breathing wavered
and chest heaved strenuously. He had not
noticed his sensei earlier.
“Was
the... was the mission... a success?” Naruto struggled to keep his
eyelids from closing but toppled into Kakashi’s arms before
the man could answer him.
“Naruto!”
“It’s
alright. It’s alright Sasuke. He’s just asleep.” Kakashi breathed a sigh of relief.
Pakkun whose absence went by
unnoticed, nudged Sasuke when he return. “Your forehead-protector,” The
dog softly grunted.
Absently,
Sasuke wondered when it fell off and reached out hesitantly. A glaring gleam bounced off the metal,
blinding him for a moment. His eyes,
immediately after adjusting, took in the gorge that ripped itself through the
leaf symbol. In place of his reflection,
an older Uchiha stared back at him.
“If you wish to kill me, hate me, detest me,
and survive in an unsightly way. Run and cling to life.” Itachi spoke to him.
Alarm
jolted Sasuke to the core and discredit to his way of life shamed him. His breathing stopped as the words echoed in
his mind and he collapsed on top of Naruto, black eyes rolling into his skull.
“Kakashi,” Pakkun questioned
as he observed the two males in the older man’s arms.
Pensively
Kakashi gazed at the forehead-protector in Pakkun’s paw before lifting a perceptive gaze to his
companion. “We’ll get him a new
one.” Kakashi promised.
My, my, am I glad to dump that
first version of the prologue! Anyone
agree? Haha,
I’m sure many of my readers are cursing me for revising instead of updating,
but what can I say as a writer, but that there is always more to do.
On another note, for any new
people, the later chapters will skip ahead six years when everyone from Rookie Nine
is 18.
