*********-for shift in scene
He
already had a headache, and the Christmas festivities had only
started. Looking over at his jovial host, he groaned Lord Jiraiya was
calling for another round of ale to be served. With each round of
drinks the drunken laughter, lewd conversation, and daring advances
of blatant hussies grew louder and more frequent. For the third time
that night he had to turn a cold shoulder to the amorous advances of
another useless twit. The girl incoherently blubbered something about
his sexual orientation, before throwing herself at another member of
the party. He sighed; it was only 9:30.
Jiraiya,
the professional pervert, only encouraged the unsought (acts of
wantonness directed to his poor guest.
“Come
now Baron Uchiha, it is the date of our Lord’s birth. This is a
time for celebration. You should enjoy the company of our fine
ladies, unless they’re not up to your tastes and you prefer to
give the gentlemen a nice round. Do not worry dear Baron, you are so
lovely that with a few drinks any of these young men would be happy
to entertain you. In fact, there are some who prefer you without the
need of ale,” he said with a wink.
Sasuke’s
eye twitched. The gray haired man guffawed, his face turning puce
with the force of his laughter. Suddenly, he was cut short by a
powerful punch from the hostess. At least Jiraiya’s wife,
Tsunade, had some understanding of decency. Of course, with a little
more to drink she would soon be worse than her husband. Once
inebriated, the buxom blond who retained a youthful appearance
despite the passage of years, would eventually challenge anyone
within three feet of her to a game of cards— one she would, no
doubt, lose. In fact, one rumor had it that the only reason she had
married the old pervert was because she had lost a game to him.
Sasuke would not have been at all surprised if it were true
He
slipped away from the host and hostess, moving to the corners of the
lavish dance hall. No expense had been spared for this celebration as
the room had been decorated with red, gold and green satin curtains
and other hangings. Holly had been tied around columns and the
Christmas tree shimmered with vibrant colors and appeared as if it
would collapse from the sheer amount of adornments. The
revelers were also richly dressed; some no doubt had gone into debt
to show off such gaudy costumes.
Sasuke
sighed in irritation. He was a man who preferred simplicity with a
purpose. For instance, his plain black suit was sharp and yet plain
enough to help him blend in with the shadows on the walls. That way
he could avoid the raucous attention of others and simply fulfill his
duty as quietly and quickly as possible. Yes, with simplicity on his
side it would not be so bad.
A
flash of pink quickly complicated his thoughts. Sasuke felt a chill
go down his spine as a pink-haired girl, oblivious to him, carried on
a private conversation with an older man with dark long hair. The
dark-haired man turned his head to him and smiled widely. A hand
snaked around the woman’s waist. He pulled the young lady
closer to him, his sharp dark eyes eyes locked with the young Uchiha.
“Lord
Orochimaru, Miss Sakura,” he said bowing slightly to the
pink-haired woman standing before him.
“Always
the gentlemen, eh? Wouldn’t you say so Sakura?” asked the
oily man with his arm around her waist.
Sakura
blushed at this comment, before mumbling her agreement. The hand
around her waist tightened, annoying Sasuke. He felt something in his
chest tighten, screaming danger as he looked at her blushing face.
“You
know, you will soon have to start calling her Mrs. Yakushi[i]
. Before long she will be a married woman.”
“Yes,
I will do so when she is married to your ‘son’,”
Sasuke bit out evenly, “until then, I think it would be best if
you tried not to be so familiar with you’re dear son’s[ii]
fiancée.”
“Sasuke!”
Sakura cried out, her face flushed as she pushed away the older man’s
hand and stepped away from them both. Still, it was him she looked at
with hurt in her eyes.
He
sighed; even now she still waited for him to rescue her. But no, she
had gotten herself into this and it was no longer his concern. Still,
the dark eyes of Orochimaru made him nervous and angry.
“Tsk,
tsk, I believe you’ve just insulted me and my future
daughter-in-law, Sasuke. Now if the insult were merely on me I would
simply forgive, but I happen to treasure those things that belong to
my sons,” he said, a smirk twisting his mouth.
“Now,
now, I don’t think Sakura is the type of girl to belong to
anyone, eh Sakura,” came the casual drawl of a strange
silver-haired man. A scarf was wrapped around his face and neck,
while a bandanna, casually tied around his head, obscured his left
eye.
“Admiral
Hatake,” Orochimaru bit out in an irritated tone.
Kakashi ignored the tone, as his
smiling eye looked at the three. Despite his covered face, Sasuke was
certain Kakashi was smirking.
“Hello,
Sasuke, Orochimaru. Ah, Sakura, I heard about your engagement from
your father. I trust you are happy?” Kakashi said, turning his
face toward her.
“Yes,
Kabuto and I) are very excited about it. He’s finishing up his
studies at the university of the land of fire. By next year we
will live together on his salary as a doctor. In fact, Kabuto has
spent the past four months securing his name among several
physicians. The prospects have made him the happiest I’ve
ever seen.” She knotted her fingers together and then smiled, a
bit too widely for Sasuke’s liking.
“Not
as happy as the day when you accepted his proposal I believe. Hmm, so
what of your own studies and students?”
“I’ve
already resigned my position as a teacher. Kabuto is right. It would
simply be too much to plan the wedding and continue teaching.”
she said, looking down a hint of frustration edging it’s way
into her voice. “The council was very upset about it at first,
but they’ve already found a replacement.”
“Hmm,
really? A local girl?” Kakashi inquired as he lazily took a
glass of wine from a passing server.
“No,
a widow with a small infant. She’s supposed to be from an
important clan and supposedly well-educated. She should be arriving
any day now with a nursemaid.”She said hastily, her grin was
still far too wide.
“Good,
good, but where will you and Kabuto be living? Aren’t you
marrying in two months time? The new school mistress will be taking
the old cottage, and it will take at least a year before
Kabuto find stable employment.”
“They’ll
be residing with me, Kakashi,”Orochimaru said smoothly.
“Ah,
of course Lord Orochimaru, you obviously want to spend as much time
with your son as you can, before he leaves. I wonder if you’ll
be lonely when he’s gone? He’s always been your favorite
boy. It’s a shame not more of your boys have turned out as well
as Kabuto.”
Sasuke
smirked, Kakashi knew him well enough to leave him out of this
conversation, but still allow him to enjoy the subtle game of
mockery. He could see Orochimaru redden at the Admirals words.
“I
demand much from my adopted protégés. Strength,
purpose, and talent—” Sasuke felt his body shake as
Orochimaru's eye’s stole a glance at him “— if they
cannot meet my expectations then there is obviously something wrong
with the material and not my methods. Now as much as I enjoy your
company Admiral, Sakura, I am leaving now. I will take you home.”
“Ah,
don’t leave just yet Sakura. I will be visiting your house
later; I can easily save Orochimaru the trouble of having to drive
you if you will simply escort me.” Kakashi was smiling as he
held out a hand to the girl.
“Really,
Hatake—” but Orochimaru was interrupted before he could
finish.
“I’ll
be more than grateful to you. Thank you Admiral.” Sakura said
(comma) quickly turning her head to the Admiral , as the lord glared
darkly at the masked man.
“Very
good then, enjoy yourself at the ball, dear. I wont be heading out
for another hour. We’ll meet up by the punch bowl.”
Kakashi said, waving off the girl who quickly retreated into the
crowd. The old lord’s eyes twitched violently. It appeared he
was not pleased with the turn of events, but he said nothing as he
stormed out of the room.
“That
girl is going to marry her death,” Kakashi said grimly after
Orochimaru's departure. Sasuke grunted, knowing where this was
leading. ‘Dear God, when the hell did a Christmas Party turn
into purgatory?’ Sasuke thought bitterly as he stared at his
former naval commander.
“There’s
nothing that can be done.” He spat out, feeling the bitterness
the words left on his mouth.
“Nothing
Sasuke?”
“What?
Do you expect me to pull out some half-assed confession of love to
stop her from making the biggest mistake of her life just to make an
equally worse one? If this is what she wants let her have it.”
“Sometimes
life isn’t getting what you want, but getting what you need.
Even if you do not love her the way that she needs, have some pity on
her. Even now, her eyes are still only on you.”
“The
engagement ring says otherwise.”
“Do
you throw away your friends so easily?”
“I
had thought of her as my friend because I had believed her to be
strong and intelligent. She has worked diligently to prove me wrong.”
“You
do stupid things when you’re in love. One day I hope you’ll
see for yourself how foolish and weak love can make you. You’ve
already seen it once in your life, maybe the second time it will
stick.” His single eye was propping him for some kind of
response.
Sasuke
turned his back on him. The clock chimed ten, but that didn’t
matter. He found his feet carrying him away from the questioning eyes
and hidden whispers. He refused to look back, a strange fear
boiling inside of him as if he would turn to salt. He burst out of
the grand hall, ignoring the whispers that followed him.
********************************************************
He
rode on horseback through the frosty night air, his scarf bundled up
tightly around his face and neck. In the moonlight, he strangely
resembled a warped version of the Admiral. A strange figure that
would play into the fears and memories of the old farmers as they
spoke in hushed whispers of the once infamous white fang.
Sasuke
idly wondered whether he should have listened to his mother. He would
have been more comfortable in a carriage. Still, it would have meant
he would’ve had to bring a servant with him; one that
actually knew the social traditions of the elite. Sasuke shuddered,
the pompous ass Ebisu had tried to sucker his way in as the Uchiha’s
driver, most likely to peek down the bodices of the fine young ladies
in attendance. He had almost brought him though, if simply to remove
the secret pervert from the presence of his lonely mother. However,
after a brief conversation with the retired Capt. Genma he was put at
ease. The man had assured him that he would visit his mother
frequently throughout the night, and if the twitchy little pervert
even tried to get a glimpse of his mother’s ankles he’d
ram a pair of knitting needles into his eye sockets.
He
shook himself from the fog of recent memories and stared at the dimly
lit road aheadlistening to the gentle thump of horses hooves on the
frozen earth. The barren trees threw dark and twisted shadows across
the landscape, giving life to specters that twisted and crawled
across the earth. At least, Sasuke sighed, it hadn’t snowed
yet. He made his way through the road that came near the edge
of the village. He could make out the soft lights of other Christmas
festivals flickering dimly in the distance.
His
horse’s steps cobbled louder as they wandered across
half-paved roads, still skirting their way back home.
Suddenly a strange dim light came from the back of the school house
that dwelled just outside of the village roads. (no road) He could
see shadows moving faintly across the windows of a small cottage that
was nestled in the nook of the schoolyard. It was strange. The
cottage was part of the school, a residence for the school master or
mistress, however, Sakura still lived with her parents and the
cottage had not been lived in for years. Still, he couldn’t be
mistaken as two dark shadows crept across the window.
He
brought his horse forward, as an icy gust of wind caressed his cheeks
and slipped its way down his neck, setting his hair on ends. There
was something strange going on there. Cautiously he inched toward the
cottage. Within a few yards of it he could make out a third figure,
shrouded in black staring out into the distance from the threshold,
unaware of his presence.
Suddenly
a loud cry pierced the night; his horse whinnied loudly in surprise.
The figure turned toward him, the shroud falling from its face. A
white head turned in the moonlight its eyes a ghostly mirror of
the cold white moon above. A dark halo of hair wiped across the
luminescent features like like long spindly shadows across the face
of the moon. Sasuke’s breath caught in his throat as the
figure's pale lips moved to speak. A sense of dread filled his chest
and, without thought, Sasuke tugged at his horse’s reigns and
fled.

Since Orochimaru doesn’t have a last name I will use Kabuto’s
last name for him.

Kabuto is adopted
