He saw none, but the hermit had spent enough time over the past two years with him to know where Naruto had likely gone. With a sigh, he set off down the now-familiar path to the waterfall.
He found him sitting at the edge of the cliff, head bowed. For a moment, he simply stood behind him.
"I still dream about him, you know," Naruto finally said, voice subdued.
Sighing again, Jiraiya settled down beside him. "I know, kid," he said softly. "I know."
Below them, the waterfall tumbled into a large river, roaring as froth and and mist were spat up from its base. The air still shimmered with early morning haze, although the sun was high enough that it was starting to burn off, now, and the Sannin thought he might have seen the ghost of a rainbow in the waterfall's billowing spray.
After a long moment, Naruto broke the quiet. "I like it here," he murmured, voice barely audible over the falls. "It's nice. I think..." His voice trailed off, but Jiraiya didn't need to hear the words to know what he was thinking.
I think he would like it here...
Jiraiya said nothing.
"We used to just go on walks in the forest, you know," Naruto said that evening, after they'd eaten their typical meal of fish and instant ramen cooked over the fire.
Jiraiya looked up, quirking an eyebrow in interest. "Really?" he asked, somewhat startled. "I never would have thought he was the type to go on walks alone with people who were in love with him." He grinned, unable to help himself; the boy was just too much fun to tease.
It took a moment for Naruto to catch his meaning, and when he did he howled in righteous anger and threw a chopstick at his head. "I AM NOT IN LOVE WITH THAT BASTARD!" he bellowed, and Jiraiya laughed as he tossed the chopstick back, almost getting Naruto in the eye.
"Of course not," he said simply. "Really, the crazy ideas you come up with."
He managed to smother his grin at the suspicious glare Naruto threw him. The following grumbled, "Ero-Sennin," had him laughing again.
But later, as they crawled into their sleeping bags, surrounded by nothing but darkness and the smell of the dying fire and the sounds of nature at night, he glanced over at his student and knew, without a doubt, that tomorrow would be one of those days. Days when everything revolved around thoughts of Uchiha Sasuke.
The next morning, as they watched the sun slowly burn away the mist curling snake-like around the tree trunks in the valley below them, Jiraiya idly hoped Naruto wasn't the only one being haunted by ghosts.
