Chapter 1
There was this craving that had developed within Sasuke during his stay with Orochimaru. It was hard to say what exactly had caused it, but most could speculate that the former Sannin’s sadistic tendencies were to blame. One of the main reasons why Orochimaru wanted Sasuke’s body was because of the Sharingan, of course, but the Uchiha was also strikingly beautiful. His Bloodline trait alone didn’t make him so deadly.
Sasuke had been a willing apprentice, albeit reluctant for much else more; he only desired what was required to defeat his brother. Considering this much, Orochimaru had been forced to drug him into becoming a more enthusiastic participant in other activities. Sasuke couldn’t have helped himself against Orochimaru’s advances back then, but now he desired the painful affliction that would ultimately lead to the highest sensations of euphoria.
He didn’t have to be drugged anymore. Apparently, it had somehow worked its way into Sasuke’s system. Either that, or his masochism had finally been unleashed, and it couldn’t be satiated except by a sadist’s hand. Since his return, after the battle with Orochimaru, Sasuke hadn’t been touched in exactly three weeks, and it was slowly driving him insane. This innate urge to be used for the roughest form of pleasure grew increasingly stronger each night. Somehow, he had even begun to regret killing his former master – the source of his release. Sasuke had resorted to self-infliction and masturbation, but that hadn’t helped him.
He wasn’t interested much in anyone, much less his companions. He was still trying to regain Naruto and Kakashi's trust, and the last thing he needed was to ask them to molest him. Most shinobi stayed away from him anyway. Usual acquaintances from before were friendly enough, but they had this wariness about them whenever they spoke to him. Sasuke couldn’t accept that. He wasn’t loved, but he wasn’t hated either. He wanted a mixture of both extremes. Orochimaru had desired Sasuke but feared him all the same. Perhaps the sexual torture he had inflicted had been a way to keep the Uchiha in line. Thinking about it now, Sasuke didn’t mind that method much at all. Drugs had been necessary on several occasions for Orochimaru, though, since Sasuke hadn’t been the least attracted to him.
It was hard to realize that Uchiha Sasuke, haughty and powerful, would want to demean himself as some sex slave. Sure, he could blame it on the unfortunate events of his life, but it wasn’t like he had been exploited when he had been younger – quite the opposite, in fact. His family barely paid attention to him. The person he had longed for the most rarely spent time with him. Sasuke knew for a long while that he had to be strong – a shinobi with no weaknesses – and had to deny himself in order to achieve great power. For once, he thought, he’d like to lose control. Someone could dominate him, and he’d love every moment of it.
His condition wasn’t affecting his performance, but his emotions were restless. He would dream of metal and blood only to wake up alone, unharmed and unsatisfied. Naruto had first noticed Sasuke’s withdrawn demeanor after the second week. The Uchiha was always quiet, but this time he seemed overly so. Naruto figured it had something to do with guilt from betraying Konoha in the first place, but Sasuke had more than made up for that during the war – as he had shared all vital information concerning Orochimaru and Sound – and was a key fighter. The beginning of Sasuke’s return could have been better, but Naruto couldn’t complain. He was glad to have his best friend back, although not with this worrisome, negative change.

It wasn’t expected when a small group of Sand-nin arrived on the training grounds of Team 7.
Sasuke had sensed the usual foreboding that came with the Kazekage and forced himself to concentrate on Naruto’s shuriken flying his way. He had seen Gaara of the Desert for the first time since after 4 years several months ago, and he hadn’t denied the envy he had felt when Gaara refused to leave Naruto’s side during the battles. At first, Sasuke hadn’t known why that was, but seeing the redhead now seemed to clear all of that up. It might have been hidden and gradual, but Sasuke found that he was rather attracted to the malevolent Kazekage. There was just something about his aura – so sinful and carnal.
The shuriken embedded themselves on the ground as Sasuke sprang away, his Mange Sharingan eyes spinning threateningly. Naruto only smirked up at him.
“Be a little more original, ne, Sasuke-kun?” the blonde taunted, kyuubi’s energy swirling around him. Sasuke sneered.
“After you, Uzumaki.”
Naruto regained control over the demon within him with a grin. “Touche.” The tell-tale red chakra stopped swirling around Naruto, and Sasuke felt a sting of disappointment as the blonde turned to their visitors. “Hey, Gaara. Hey, Temari,” he greeted cheerfully, as if nothing had happened.
Temari waved a hand dismissively, watching Naruto and Sasuke with interest. “Oh please, don’t stop by our account. Continue.”
Sasuke glared at Naruto before focusing his red gaze towards Gaara. He was slightly startled to find a pair of light green eyes already staring straight back at him before they reverted to Naruto with a gentler light.
“Naruto, nice to see you again.”
The blonde laughed sheepishly. “Same here. You look good, Gaara.”
“I try,” replied Gaara with a small smile.
Sasuke had obviously missed a lot, one of them being the friendship that had bloomed between the two. He bristled at the idea of Gaara not acknowledging him, but it shouldn’t have to matter in the first place. He had labeled Gaara a rival a long time ago, and the last thing he needed was to concern himself with the relationship between his two greatest adversaries; how they acted as if he weren’t there.
“What are you doing here anyway?” asked Naruto casually, picking the conversation up again
Sasuke swore he saw Gaara glance at him. “Kage business. You understand.”
“Heehee. Don’t I?”
‘Usuratonkachi’ dared to slip passed Sasuke’s lips along with the familiar roll of his eyes, but he steeled his expression.
“Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s go.” Naruto placed his hands behind his head as the two Sand-nin started walking towards him. “I’m starving,” he added as an afterthought.
Gaara appeared to find it endearing since he gave another small smile before following the carefree blonde. He brushed passed Sasuke without a second glance, and Temari strode aside the Uchiha as they made their way into the village.
Sasuke remained silent the entire time, his sharingan still bright like fire, although the fight had left him. He could see why Itachi was so addicted to it (for various reasons involving perception), but he was careful not to use too much chakra. As the two boys engaged in conversation (mostly Naruto, actually), Temari turned to Sasuke.
“You’re quiet,” she said rather offhandedly. “How have you been, Uchiha-kun?” She was met with silence and decided to give up after that.
When the village came in sight, Sasuke halted. “I think I forgot something. Go on ahead.” Without waiting for a response, he turned around and headed back at a leisurely pace. Naruto called after him, but he ignored it. Then the blonde grumbled something about Sasuke still being a selfish bastard.
He was indeed selfish, but not unrealistically. The Uchiha clan could admit to an obsessive nature only because they liked to get what they wanted, and the sooner, the better. Sasuke was currently frustrated beyond belief because he desired something denied him, and being with that stupid dobe and kazekage painfully reminded him of that fact. He wasn’t sure exactly what it was. He didn’t long for companionship, that’s for sure. It probably had something to do with Gaara paying more attention to Naruto than him and what that could imply.
That really shouldn’t matter, but Sasuke had felt the bitter sting of being brushed off. Maybe it was his pride; maybe it was jealousy. In either case, Sasuke couldn’t stand watching the two so he had to turn back.
Who knew? They could be fucking each other. Somehow imagining Gaara having sex sent pleasure to his lower belly. The Kazekage didn’t seem capable of passion (come to think of it, neither was Sasuke), but Sasuke had the feeling that Gaara could fuck with just as much ardor as in his fights. The only difference would be sexual pleasure and without the intent of killing – or at least not with the intent of complete murder.
Sasuke’s heart fluttered, and he paused before he’d collapse by the mere thought of it. Since when did Sasuke start thinking abou Gaara like that? He had remembered the Kazekage as this unstable adolescent shadowed by his demon and bent on killing for his life’s purpose. Somewhere along the way, this image of Gaara had transformed into this more mature, more civilized shinobi, who had physically grown so handsomely. Sasuke admitted, albeit begrudgingly, that Gaara was indeed good-looking. Much like Naruto, he had lost his boyish qualities and had developed the definitions of a young man in constant activity and under tremendous responsibilities. Sasuke could only imagine how much Gaara’s power had grown.
Frowning at the subject of all his musings, Sasuke decided that he’d return to Konoha, having no reason to stay out any longer than needed. Gaara had never affected him before, and Sasuke should keep it that way. Somehow, he had a feeling that it was going to be slightly more difficult than that.

Ichiraku must have been Naruto’s way of welcoming people, or so it seemed. Sasuke was on his way home when he heard the familiar voice of the blonde call out to him. He really wanted to ignore it, but another’s gaze of disapproval made him turn around. Sasuke didn’t know what happened next, as he was suddenly in front of the two boys at the small booth. Temari was apparently absent for the moment.
“What, Naruto?” he demanded quite irritably, crossing his arms. His sharingan had long disappeared.
Naruto tucked a large amount of ramen into his mouth, specs of the soup flying everywhere. “Wanna ea’? There’th plendy,” he declared through the bundle of noodles. Sasuke winced and moved backwards, wiping his cheek as he did so.
“That’s disgusting.” Even after all these years, Naruto still ate in the same manner, and Sasuke would always say the same thing; it fell upon deaf ears as Naruto had only slurped louder. He vaguely wondered how Gaara could stand the blonde’s behavior, but he apparently didn’t mind. Gaara had a bowl in his hand and was eating periodically without so much as a flinch.
Naruto chewed and swallowed audibly. “Come on, teme,” he teased in a sing-song voice. “I know you want it!” His tone had a seductive quality as he held out his bowl, a small amount of ramen on his chopsticks (probably in consideration for Sasuke’s etiquette). The Uchiha arched a brow at the attempt and was about to reply when Gaara spoke up.
“I’ll take it if he doesn’t want it.”
Sasuke watched, a bit put-off, as Naruto turned with a hyper, “Okay!” and fed the noodles to the Kazekage. Gaara glanced at Sasuke as he took the ramen into his mouth, inhaling the noodles quietly when Naruto withdrew the chopsticks, a satisfied grin on the fox boy’s face. He bit off the rest and sat straight as he chewed. Sasuke’s eyes followed the glistening lips and frowned as he noticed that they were smirking.
“I’m leaving,” he suddenly grumbled, glaring at nothing and everything.
“Fine, Sasuke. You’re missing out!”
Sasuke ignored Naruto as he left, mentally kicking himself all the while. Who did that Gaara think he was? His stomach growled and he berated that, too, even though he couldn’t blame it much. Ramen had never looked so good. A spot of pink hair caught his attention and Sakura, upon noticing him, ran over from her place beside Ino and Chouji. The latter two followed her at a slower pace.
“Sasuke-kun! You’re finished training with Naruto?”
“Yeah, there’re over there,” he replied noncommittally, walking passed her. Sakura gave him a confused look. “They?” She just shrugged and approached Ichiraku, knowing where Sasuke meant.
He stuffed his hands into his pockets, suddenly craving for some miso ramen.

Kakashi was home, reading the last installment of his favorite Icha Icha. It had been released since last month, but he was still in the middle of it, reading leisurely between the bombardment of missions they had suddenly received after the war. Sasuke still stayed with him under some form of house arrest. He didn’t mind though. There was no one else he’d rather be with like this. He’d be careful with returning missing-nins as well (though Tsunade hadn’t labeled him as one, that was what he technically was). Sasuke had caught and tied his scratched headband on his forehead when Naruto had thrown it to him during their battle with Orochimaru, clearly reinstating back to the title of Konoha’s prized shinobi.
“Yo,” Kakashi greeted, not looking up from his book. Sasuke only nodded as he made his way into the kitchen. There was rice cooking and fish freshly grilled on the table. His heart warmed at the sight, but he pushed that feeling away. Kakashi had long felt like the mother he had lost and the brother he wished he’d had. “How was training with Naruto?”
“The same, I guess.” Sasuke pulled out a plate, considering. “Did you eat already?”
“In a minute.”
Sasuke nodded again and pulled out another plate from the cupboard, setting it by the rice cooker. He prepared his dish and placed it on the table, waiting as Kakashi finally got up (after five minutes, probably finishing the chapter) and came into the kitchen.
They ate in silence. Sasuke wasn’t complaining, but ramen still sounded nice. He glanced over at Kakashi, who was eating slowly, almost lazily. Kakashi had recently allowed his mask down during these times, when they were at home alone, when nothing else seemed to matter. Sasuke had been more than a little startled when Kakashi had allowed him the privilege of seeing his unmasked face. It made him feel special in a way, trusted and worthy. He honestly believed that Kakashi didn’t have to, but his former sensei had obviously felt otherwise.
He was handsome – very much so, actually. Sasuke still didn’t know why Kakashi would cover up such a beautiful face, and he (jokingly) thought it was to ward off all potential fans. It could also be for stealth or just the idea of mystery. Also, with only a single eye visible, it would be hard for others to read any emotions hidden within.
Sasuke looked away and continued eating, finishing off his plate quickly. He got up to pour water for the both of them and saw Kakashi doing with same with the tea that had been set out earlier when he sat back down. The memories Sasuke had of staying alone in his apartment was long gone.
“I had received a scroll from the Hokage just before you arrived,” Kakashi said, taking his glass of water first. “We’re to see her at three this afternoon.”
Sasuke nodded, glancing at the clock on the wall with kunai as hands. It was a quarter until one.
After clearing the table and washing the dishes, Sasuke went for a bath while Kakashi sat back on the couch for more reading. Sasuke couldn’t stand being so idle in one spot these days, but it suited his roommate well. He figured this was what Kakashi had been doing whenever he, Naruto, and Sakura had been out on the training grounds in the old days. Speaking of which, Kakashi hadn’t taken another team yet. It might have been because the jounin were busy (most of the time. Today was a down day) or because he didn’t want another team just yet. Kakashi was, albeit indirectly, still raising his children of Team 7.
Sasuke scrubbed himself before dipping into the hot bath, a contented sigh escaping his lips. Training with Naruto wasn’t exactly “the same,” as the blonde was less careless and hit more critically than before. Sasuke was pleased with the idiot’s progress. He wanted Naruto strong if only for the pleasure of having a worthy rival. That, and Sasuke couldn’t stand the possibility of the blonde defeated and extracted of kyuubi.
Which brought the thoughts of Gaara. Everything and nothing about the Kazekage flooded Sasuke’s mind and he wondered how someone he knew so little could get under his skin. He didn’t think much of him before, and he supposed one glance could catch his attention forever. Gaara didn’t have any dynamic qualities other than hosting a demon and being the leader of his village. He was quiet, homicidal, abrasive, and had major psychological problems. Sasuke liked the constant things in life, and Gaara was anything but that, so why was he interested?
He figured it had something to do with physical attraction. Gaara had that alluring dangerous look, not to mention the build to back it up. He was still pale (though living in a desert), still slightly shorter than Sasuke, but still intimidating all the same. His eyes were framed with the dark lining of sleeplessness and his deep red hair, the color of fresh blood, complimented his green irises. He was still slender, though Sasuke could hardly tell under the thick garments he wore, but he knew there were muscles strong enough to throw him down and --
Sasuke bit his lip, nearly drawing blood. It had suddenly gotten ten degrees hotter, and his body stirred from the familiar sexual frustration coiling at his belly. He abruptly stood from the bath, wrapped himself in a towel and padded into his shared room with Kakashi across the living room (Kakashi had let Sasuke take the bed while he slept on a bedroll. He asked if Sasuke preferred to share the bed instead, and the Uchiha immediately took it for himself). Sasuke had initially wondered why the bedroom and bathroom were so greatly separated but he decided not to ask. Quickly dressing, he headed back out when Kakashi went to answer the door.
“Hey, sensei,” greeted two familiar voices. Naruto and Sakura bounded in after Kakashi had welcomed them. Sasuke was wrapping his left arm with a fresh set of straps and sat on the couch beside Kakashi’s facedown book, ignoring them. Naruto saw him and plopped heavily down on the cushion beside him, causing Sasuke to rise slightly off the furniture and the book to lose its page. The Uchiha pierced his teammate with an annoyed stare.
“What, dobe?”
Naruto grinned but said nothing, taking pleasure in just the act of irritating Sasuke. Sakura came in with a frown, having a mind to scold Naruto for the umpteenth time as she sat on the recliner by the window. Kakashi regarded his former students cheerfully, enjoying the times they were all together like this, even as they were older all. The young ninjas always made themselves at home in his apartment.
“We were bored. Gaara had to see Tsunade-baabaa and so we decided to drop by,” replied Naruto to the unspoken question. “I heard we had to see her anyway, so we might as well go together!”
The last thing Sasuke wanted was to spend another moment with the blonde, but he said nothing. Although, Naruto was sitting awfully close, and he had to shift away. Naruto sniffed at the air and leaned closer to Sasuke’s hair. The other teen was more than a little bothered by that and smacked at Naruto’s head.
“Ow!”
“What do you think you’re doing?”
The blonde looked pensive for a moment, his eyes narrowing. “You smell like melons, teme.”
Sasuke growled, his eye twitching. Naruto could be such a random idiot. “It’s not my fault,” he muttered darkly, glaring in the jounin’s direction. Kakashi did the shopping, but he didn’t want to say any more than necessary. Kakashi’s eye crinkled with amusement. Sakura then got up and proceeded to yell at Naruto for invading Sasuke’s personal space, but she did take a whiff towards the Uchiha’s direction anyway.

As they were entering, Gaara was leaving. He gave a weak smile when
Naruto spoke to him but didn’t stay to chat. Sasuke tried to keep his
eyes forward, but he had failed. Gaara caught his look, and Sasuke
bristled as they seemed to mock him with a knowing glint in their
depths. Ignoring it, he proceeded into the Hokage’s office with the
others.
Tsunade, surrounded by scrolls, looked thoughtful as they entered.
She smiled and bade them to sit on the chairs before her desk. “You
must be wondering what this is about,” she said lightly.
“No kidding,” Naruto said quite happily. “Is it a mission? An
A-rank mission?”
“Gaara-sama has come a long way, and he requests a ninja to go with
him back to Sunagakure,” Tsunade explained, cutting to the chase. “I
guess it could be considered as much, Naruto.”
“What’s it for?” Sakura asked, curious. “He doesn’t exactly need
protection.”
“I’ll say,” Naruto added.
“He’s short of jounin right now. Some had been killed, as you know.
Chuunin numbers have been lowered as well.” Tsunade sighed guiltily.
“It’s the least I can do.”
“Why us, then?”
“He wants ninjas he can work well with – or knows – more
specifically.”
“Well, that rules me out,” Sakura said as-a-matter-of-factly. She
pointed a thumb in Naruto’s direction. “Take him.”
Tsunade shook her head. “I don’t think it’s wise for two demon
carriers to be together for that period of time.”
“Did you tell him that?” Kakashi asked.
“I did. He didn’t like it, but he understood my concern.”
“Ne, Baabaa, what’s this about?” Naruto chimed in, getting
impatient. “Can’t you just be straight with us?”
The Hokage’s brow twitched. “The Akatsuki are still out there.
Especially after the war, they would no doubt be preying on the most
vulnerable village. Gaara-sama was almost taken once. They will be
after him again.”
“Kankuro and Temari are good team members,” Sakura supplied.
“They’re jounin. I’m a chuunin, and well, Sasuke-kun and Naruto...”
“True, but he wants ninja who would know how to defeat the former
Akatsuki leaders. Kankuro and Temari haven’t met whom you already
have.”
The Akatsuki had helped Orochimaru somewhat against the allied
villages, but with Sound’s failure, the organization of S-ranked
criminals was believed to have been disbanded. Some members had died,
but the Leader had not yet been caught and was assumed to still give
out orders to his remaining subjects. Sasuke knew his brother was still
alive, however, simply by the fact that he was an Uchiha. Itachi
couldn’t die any other way than by his brother’s hands. Sasuke had seen
him towards the end of the war four months ago, and their meeting was
not so pleasant.
Sasuke, who had been silent for the most part, now understood what
Tsunade was trying to say. The pointed look she sent his way confirmed
his suspicions. “You mean Itachi,” he stated stoically, though his
hands were trembling slightly.
“I’m not sure, but it is most likely. He’s been after Naruto, I
know, but he knows better than to come directly into Konoha. He might
be assigned to both Gaara and Naruto; Gaara being his first priority.
He had escaped once before. He might not be so lucky against someone at
Itachi’s level.”
“The Kazekage is not exactly easy to capture,” Kakashi stated off
to the side. “But he doesn’t know the full potential of the
sharingan.”
“That’s right.”
Tsunade gave Sasuke a sympathetic glance, but it disappeared. She
knew better than that. “Sasuke, I’m not asking you to do anything
–“
The Uchiha’s eyes were sharp as they regarded her. “You just did.”
Sasuke had promised himself to get stronger the right way before he’d
face his brother for the final time. He owed Konoha, his deceased clan,
and himself that much. Kakashi still had more to teach him. Naruto
still had more power to help him develop. Sakura still had more support
to give him. He simply wasn’t ready; not until he had purged himself of
the selfish vengeance and hatred of his youth.
Naruto jumped up from his seat, knocking the chair backwards. “If
Saskue-teme is going, then he isn’t leaving without me! I won’t let him
face Itachi alone.”
Sasuke’s expression softened as he regarded the blonde.
“Naruto…”
The blonde grinned at Sasuke. “Now who’s the idiot? Think I’d let
you go out there alone?”
“And they’re definitely not going without me, either,” Sakura
declared with determination. “They can’t take care of themselves.”
Sasuke was honestly touched, but this was something he had to do
alone. He turned away, his eyes shadowed behind his bangs. “No. You
have to stay here.” He ignored the indignant gasps. “Just shut up and
listen. The last thing I want is for the two of you to get in the way.
I’d never forgive myself if Itachi laid a finger on any of you. He
wouldn’t hesitate if only it would make me hate him even more. I
couldn’t bear it.”
The room fell silent. Sasuke was shaking, his knuckles turning
white where they gripped onto the arms of his chair. He hoped they
would understand.
000 000
They were back at Kakashi’s apartment. Sasuke was rummaging through
his things, packing them in a duffle bag about half his height. Tsunade
had said that he would be gone for a short while, but he had to go back
to her office mid evening to get the full details. He’d also be leaving
that night with Gaara and Temari.
Kakashi leaned against the doorway. Naruto and Sakura were in the
living room. Sasuke packed his clothes on the bottom, followed by extra
weaponry. There were two separate dressers, one of them being from his
apartment that he had brought; his was black. Kakashi’s was slightly
longer and gray in color. Sasuke strapped his sleeping roll on the side
of his duffel bag on the bed and sighed as he sat on the shuriken
decorated quilt.
He wasn’t exactly thrilled with the mission, but he was excited for
it. He had been to the Sand village one time before, and just as Konoha
was surrounded by trees and green, Sunagakure consisted of sand and the
dull color of beige. It would be a completely different environment.
Also, there was the idea of being with Gaara all the time, and Sasuke
was sure he’d completely lose his mind.
If he did see his brother again, would he be able to kill him? Much
more, could he kill Itachi? Itachi was, after all, his last
remaining relative. Sasuke wouldn’t want to lose any more of his
family, no matter what Itachi’s sins were. Sasuke was in no position to
judge.
Kakashi approached the bed and sat behind him, their backs to each
other. “I’m really proud of you, Sasuke,” he said quietly. “You’ve come
a long way.” Sasuke knew he didn’t just mean his strength. The Uchiha
scooted closer and leaned back until he rested against his former
sensei. A gloved hand came up and ruffled at his hair resting against
Kakashi’s shoulder.
“Thanks, Kakashi.”
000 000
Gaara and Temari were already with Tsunade when Sasuke walked in
alone.
The Hokage smiled upon seeing the Uchiha and ushered him in with a
gesture of her hand. She was standing before her desk. “Are you ready?”
she asked.
Sasuke nodded, moving beside Temari, who inclined her head in
acknowledgment.
“We really appreciate it, Sasuke,” said the blonde Sand-nin. ‘Even
if my brother doesn’t say it,’ her eyes seemed to add. Sasuke hadn’t
expected anything more from the Kazekage anyway. Besides, this was more
for himself than for Gaara.
“It’s fine.”
Tsunade turned to the silent Gaara. “Whenever you’re ready,
Gaara-sama. I just hope you can handle him.”
“Thank you, Godaime-sama.” Gaara bowed minutely before taking his
leave. He paused before Sasuke. “This doesn’t change anything.”
Temari bristled beside them but said nothing, her continued fear of
her brother – although lesser now – winning out.
“You’re right,” Sasuke replied in just the same tone, his gaze
unwavering from the pale ones in front of him. “I’ll still expect a
fight.”
Gaara smirked and brushed passed him. “Meet us in front of the
gate.” With that, he left, not even waiting for Temari. Sasuke never
dropped his gaze.
Tsunade mentally sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose. “Maybe
this wasn’t such a good idea,” she muttered to herself. She swore she
heard another blonde in the room agree.
000 000
The others were by the gate when sasuke made his way toward them.
It was nearly nightfall. Sasuke was sure no one had eaten yet, but that
was fine with him. Gaara looked impatient, and Sasuke wanted to slow
his steps further, if only to spite him. Temari had gone ahead of him
and was waiting beside her brother. Naruto had his arms crossed and
Sakura was looking more than a little dismal. Kakashi’s hands were in
his pockets, Sasuke’s bag at his side.
“You just got here, and you’re already going,” the pink haired girl
grumbled quietly when Sasuke approached. Her eyes were cast downward.
“I promised I’d protect the both of you.”
Sasuke had long accepted Sakura – since the day he had left Konoha
with the Sound Four. He didn’t understand why she’d be upset now; he’d
be back for sure. “Take care of Naruto – and of Kakashi, too. Don’t
worry about me.”
“Hurry up and go, teme!” Naruto cried. Sasuke looked at him a
glared. The blonde then grinned in his fox-like manner.
“Usuratonkachi. Shut up.”
“You know you’ll miss me.”
“Whatever… dobe.” Sasuke knew, however, that there was truth in
Naruto’s words. He’d miss everyone, actually, especially the blonde
idiot who had managed to make his life that much harder. The gates were
already opening, and he gave one last nod to Kakashi. The jounin waved
back in encouragement.
000 000
The forest was quieter than Sasuke had remembered it being at
night. The moon was bright and full, illuminating the path before them.
They seemed to be in no such hurry, as they didn’t leap through the
trees, but Sunagakure was a good couple of days away at this rate, and
a steady pace served better than a faster one, he supposed. Sasuke
wanted to hurry along, but kept at the Sand-nins’ pace, trusting their
time management. Apparently, their village didn’t need them back too
soon.
Temari walked between the two boys. She opened her mouth
periodically then closed it again, as if debating on what to say then
withdrawing her words the last minute. It annoyed Sasuke, since he
believed she should say whatever she wanted, but past experiences had
told him that she was quite withdrawn when around her brother. Gaara
didn’t seem so frightening as before, but he supposed old habits died
hard. He’d be damned if he started up a conversation.
There was the occasional rustle of the leaves, or the sounds of
animals scurrying about quickly through the bushes. The silence was
starting to bother Sasuke, as he was so used to either Naruto’s
complaints or Orochimaru’s insistent blabbering about future plans and
whatnot. He liked silence but not uncomfortable ones. He was basically
with people he was unfamiliar with and it made him a little uneasy.
Sasuke didn’t particularly want to talk, but he’d like to hear
someone say something.
Temari must have felt the same way because she finally spoke up.
“It’s nice out, isn’t it?” Not what he’d call ‘conversational’ but she
was trying, considering the fact that she was accompanied by two of the
most non verbal boys in the continent.
“Hn,” Sasuke agreed, keeping his eyes focused on the trail before
them. Her attempt was rather pathetic. Asking about the weather was
routine, and surely Temari could have thought of something better to
say than that. Then Sasuke remembered that her previous efforts had
been thwarted by the unresponsiveness before.
But it was enough to get them through the next several hours.
Sasuke glanced at his watch and read the numerals indicated by the
tell-tale hands. It was nearing midnight and their pace had no traces
of slowing. Sasuke’s biological clock was used to training late and
turning in early. The fact that the last time he had eaten was mid
afternoon wasn’t helping at all.
“We should set up camp,” Temari suddenly stated, halting in her
tracks. Sasuke stopped a little later, but Gaara only slowed his
pace.
“We’ll get there faster if we move on for a couple of more hours,”
the redhead argued, pausing and turning his body slightly. “I can’t
tarry.”
“Then you go,” Sasuke said, dropping his bag. Bending over to take
out his sleeping roll, he felt Gaara frown. He spared a glance at
Temari and, although she seemed strong enough to carry on, he figured
she was tired. The two Sand-nin had only come to Konoha that same day
without so much as a break. Gaara may not have been able to sleep, but
that didn’t mean his company didn’t. Sasuke said nothing but addressed
Temari. “You can rest up first. I’ll watch until an hour or so before
dawn,” he said, ignoring Gaara and his angry green eyes.
She was about to reply when Gaara strode up to the Uchiha and
grabbed his high collar. “Didn’t you just hear what I fucking said?”
Their faces were inches apart, and Sasuke felt the fury radiating from
the other man’s body.
Sasuke wrenched his shirt free with a scowl. “I’m not deaf, idiot,”
he retorted sharply, feeling the heat that had suddenly assaulted his
flesh. Gaara’s body had been much too close for comfort and the hint of
authority within the green eyes had set Sasuke’s blood boiling.
Gaara gazed at him sternly, the expression on his face never
changing. Sasuke refused to look away first and held his glare as well
as his body, keeping himself as unaffected as possible. Then the
redhead roved his eyes almost hungrily over Sasuke’s form and smirked
as he met the other man’s eyes. “Fine. We’ll rest here.”
Sasuke snapped out of his daze, a bit startled by Gaara’s sudden
change in demeanor. Gaara turned away, apparently going off to find
some supplies for a small fire or to who-knows-where. Temari sighed
then plopped down on the ground.
“For sure I thought we were all in trouble,” she muttered, almost
to herself. She looked over at Sasuke as he resumed his unpacking with
a frown (unknown to her – in contemplation). Temari knew the Uchiha
wasn’t that tired; that he had stopped more for her sake than his.
“Hey, thanks Sasuke,” she said quietly. The boy only grunted and laid
out his roll by a tree further away from the path, his movements barely
revealed by the moonlight. She gave a small smile and followed
suit.
Sasuke knew that sleeping that night would not be easy
despite how worn out his body felt. Temari was lying to Gaara’s right,
and Sasuke was lying on his back on the left, his eyes closed in
feigned slumber. The Sand-kunoichi seemed to have no qualms about
having a homicidal maniac watching over them. She wouldn’t, he
supposed; but Sasuke still had yet to get used to it – not that he ever
would, or get a chance to! This was a once in a lifetime situation,
and he’d be damned if he ever slept with… Wait! If he’d ever let
Gaara watch him – what?! Sasuke seriously wasn’t making any sense.
“I’m not going to kill you in your sleep.”
Sasuke opened his eyes and focused them on the figure leaning
against the trunk of a tree. Gaara appeared to be perfectly calm with
his arms crossed over his chest and eyes closed. Sasuke scowled and sat
up.
“It just wouldn’t be as fun as fighting you.”
Sasuke had to agree, but the way Gaara continued to look at him –
with that murderous intent/knowing smirk – unnerved him. This Gaara
seemed more perceptual and cunning, like a hellcat scrutinizing on the
prey of the week, than he remembered. Sasuke knew Gaara would pounce
soon, and he was sure he’d sooner die from the anticipation rather than
from the actual the attack.
“That’s nice to know,” Sasuke sad after a while. “But I don’t trust
you.”
“I could care less, Uchiha.”
Always wanting to get the last word, but finding himself at a loss,
Sasuke lied back down with a grunt and turned to his side, away from
the small fire. He could still feel Gaara’s eyes on him and tried to
ignore the sensation as his body succumbed to fitful sleep.

Sasuke woke up when he heard someone shift behind him. That, and
the red rays of the sun were directly on his face. He blinked, feeling
wide awake, and sat up, the chill of the air flooding his senses as his
blanket fell to his waist. His joints popped as he stretched and when
he loosened the muscles of his stomach, he heard it groan with the
hollow sound of emptiness.
“I think my brother went hunting,” Temari said, trying to make the
small fire into a bigger one. Sasuke turned to her, hiding his
embarrassment by stoning his expression. He said nothing. “Good
morning, by the way,” she added more kindly, smiling slightly.
“Hn.”
“There should be a freshwater stream nearby. You can refill your
canteens there.”
As if he didn’t already know that; but he obliged her with a nod
and got up. He strapped his bed roll to the side of his bag again
before grabbing his two flasks and heading for the stream, following
the sounds of the moving water. It was a little further down the path
and deeper into the forest. Soon, they would come across grasslands, a
small barrier of mountains, and then the desert. Sasuke wondered why he
was traveling to Sunagakure again but he reminded himself that it was
because of his brother. Yes, that was it – the opportunity to finally
fight Itachi.
The stream wasn’t that wide – only by two meters. The bottom was
clearly visible, revealing smooth pebbles and sand beneath the surface,
along with the occasional fish swimming by. Sasuke kneeled by the edge
and splashed handfuls of water on his face, instantly feeling the
refreshing effects of the cool water. He then took his two water
containers and dipped them below the surface to fill them up. Catching
sight of his reflection Sasuke decided that he really needed to cut his
bangs, as the longest parts were grazing his shoulders.
He remembered Orochimaru constantly crooning over his beautiful
face; how Sasuke’s power didn’t only reside in the Sharingan or in his
Uchiha blood – but in his looks. Sasuke hadn’t paid much attention to
his appearance, his only focus being to get stronger than his brother.
Everything else was irrelevant. It wasn’t as if Sasuke could defeat his
brother with his body…
That was simply absurd and wrong and totally taboo. Sasuke could
never do it, much less have Itachi allow it. The only way he could
defeat him was with sheer power. The same applied to every one else.
Sasuke’s sexuality had nothing to do with anything and why the fuck was
he even thinking about it? Perhaps he had stayed too long with
Orochimaru. Perhaps he just needed to get fucking laid – hard and fast
– and quickly, too.
Ending with that thought, Sasuke stood and decided to return to the
campsite.

Breakfast consisted of six fish and two rabbits and some other
small provisions the three had brought along. Sasuke had returned only
to find Temari already roasting the kills. Gaara had been leaning on
the same tree from the night before and he and Sasuke engaged in banter
before the young woman of their group had announced that everything was
cooked well done.
Sasuke didn’t want to admit that it was quite good, and that Gaara
seriously knew his prey. He wondered what else Gaara applied this
knowledge to, but he decided to cut the thought off (like after three
seconds) before it got too out of hand. Sasuke knew that – like him –
Gaara was precise and did everything with purpose; the redhead was
nothing less than utterly perfect.

Sand whirled with the heavy wind as the three travelers trudged
along. Sunagakure was slightly visible through the noise. Sasuke
figured that a sandstorm was impending and had realized the two
Sand-nin had failed to tell him. Gaara and Temari were wrapped
comfortably under their heavy layers of robes, and Sasuke was forced to
use some chakra to keep the sand out of his feet and other unwanted
places.
So when they entered the village he was relieved to find that the
offending sand outside didn’t disturb Suna. It must have been a special
jutsu around the border to keep the sand out during such storms. Sasuke
immediately dusted his body off, wincing as he felt the tell-tale
grinding of sand against his skin. He’d need a shower fast or he’d get
grumpy.
Suna was quiet and busy. It wasn’t as large as Konoha but
impressive within itself. It was simple, with building made of rock and
clay. The infrastructure appeared to be primal but was diverted with
the usual signs of modernization. The Sand-nin were intelligent and
worthy adversaries having wielded the famous third kazekage, Gaara of
the Desert, and the dreaded puppeteers. They complimented Hidden Leaf
in the sense that they were more austere in personalities (Konoha was
known to be too soft in training). Sasuke noticed that although the
ninja of Hidden Sand were smaller in population, they were no less
potent. Hokage was wise in forming an alliance with such a proud and
strong village – the reflection of all Kazekage: Gaara’s lineage.
“I’m beat,” Temari said, stretching as they made their way further
into the heart of the village. The home she shared with her two
brothers resided close to the office of the Kazekage, only being five
or so minutes away and having a large area to itself. It was two
stories high, made of smooth stone and consisting of domes and arches.
It looked like a miniature mansion; twice as wide and long as its
height. “I wonder where Kankuro is.”
Sasuke figured that this would be the most awkward part – staying
in the home of his enemy. He would have been content on staying in a
hotel by himself (courtesy of the Suna, of course) for as long as he
needed to stay. He hadn’t expected living with Gaara and his siblings,
but it did seem practical for his purpose.
“I’ll be at my office,” the redhead announced as they approached
the doors of his home. Sasuke felt the wind pick up as Gaara
disappeared in a small whirlwind of sand. Temari sighed beside him and
gave him a small smile.
“You probably won’t be seeing him much. Let’s eat and rest, then we
can bother him.”
Sasuke merely nodded. Awkward would be too much of an
understatement to describe what he was feeling.

The interior was more welcoming than he had expected, but just like
the Uchiha household, Sasuke knew there were dark secrets written in
the shadows of the walls. The foyer was big with a spiraling staircase
in the center, the threshold of the rooms upstairs visible. There was a
closed door down the hall on the right and the living room took up the
entire left wing; straight ahead appeared to be the dining area. Temari
led him up the carpeted steps and across the threshold on the right.
She pointed to the first door.
“This one’s mine.” She continued down. “This is Kankuro’s.” There
was one more door before the slightly ajar one at the end of the hall.
“You can stay in this one.” She revealed a spacious room with a bed
against the eastern wall and a balcony on the north. There was a
bathroom, closet, and two bookshelves by the door, completely filling
the wall. “This used to be Gaara’s old room. I hope you don’t
mind.”
Sasuke grunted, dropping his things. “That’s fine,” he said
noncommittally.
“Take a bath, and I’ll fix us something to eat. Make yourself at
home!” Temari left him without another word.
The Uchiha decided to take her advice. It was well into the middle
of the afternoon and he was hot, uncomfortable, and hungry. It wouldn’t
be too difficult to accept a little hospitality. Temari was rather good
at it, actually, despite the fact of who she had for a younger brother.
In either case, Sasuke just wanted to get this “mission” over with so
that he could get his fight and go home.

Sorry if there's some confusion. I know this was pretty lengthy. I felt like cutting some crap out, but I was too lazy...nvm.
Um... just a heads up on the timeline. Takes place when everyone is about 17. The War with Sound was a year long.
