Answering my own Challenge: Wild
Child...
Edit 2005-11-04: I was not all that happy with the first post. I added a few
things here and there, I don't know if it makes any difference to you, but
it did for me.
And anyone that are itching to beta this for me, just copy the text, point out
the faults (using different colours perhaps - this will make it easier for me to
see the edited things and perhaps learn from them), make a word-file of it and
email it to me (you find my email on the profile-page).
The wild child.
It was a beautiful summer day and
Hyuuga, Neji decided he would talk a stroll through the woods. He liked the
solitude it provided. He had never been the one to socialize with other people.
Every now and then he went to his cousin and her husband for dinner. And then
there was the mission the Hokage gave him, he was forced to work with others on
those missions, but other than that.. No, Neji preferred solitud.
He found a place a two hour walkway from
his house, he removed his backpack and then he sat down on the sun warm forest
floor. He looked around and a soft smile grazed his lips. It was a nice place.
He reached into the bag and found a bottle of water.
Neji laid back and looked up at the
clear blue sky. ‘I’m beginning to act like Shikamaru, watching clouds all
day,’ he thought with a smile and closed his eyes. His thoughts drifted
around in his head, dealing with everything that had happened since the
Chuunin-exams seven years ago. His cousin Hinata had changed after that. She was
still shy and soft spoken, but she was determined to get stronger. He had seen
her special technique and he was impressed by it. Yes, she had grown very strong
over the years.
Naruto, the loudmouthed and number one
surprising ninja in Konoha finally had opened his eyes and asked Hinata for a
date. Not long after that it was obvious that Naruto was deeply in love with
Neji’s cousin. Once they both had turned 18, Naruto had asked Hinata to marry
him. It had been a beautiful wedding and Neji was happy for them. Not long after
the wedding, Hinata had found a scroll which hid the secret of how to remove the
curse-seal that was placed on the branch-members foreheads. She had freed them
all, including Neji. He was a free man, he could do what ever he wanted.
His friends had all found their special
someone to share their life with. Hinata had Naruto, Sasuke and that fan waving
girl from Suna, what was her name again… Temari? Ino and Choji, Tenten and
Shikamaru (that was just too strange to accept even now…), Lee with Sakura, Kiba
and Shino. And then there was Temari’s brother who had moved to Konoha six
months ago, he was courting Kiba’s older sister, which whom Neji couldn’t
remember the name of.
Everyone had someone and Neji…. He had
none. He sighed and put his left arm over his eyes as if to block out the
darkness that threatened to consume his soul. ‘Why don’t I have someone that
I can care of in that way?’ But he knew that there was no person in Konoha
he could care for in that special way. He had his friends and he would die in
order to protect them, but he had nobody that could take away the loneliness in
his heart. He let out a dark sigh as he tried to relax. A nap after cloud
watching would be something he really needed.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
‘Damn fly… go away…’
Neji mentally growled as he waved his hand above his face. But no matter how
much he waved about, the fly refused to leave his face. But then, the damn fly
bit his nose and Neji sat up with a dark growl. ‘Stupid bugs, why don’t you
go and play with…. ehhh???’
Neji’s milky white eyes widened when he
saw the figure sitting next to him. He shook his head a bit and then looked
again but his eyes had not deceived him. Next to him, just a few feet away sat a
boy with long, flaming red hair and the most enchanting green eyes he ever had
seen in his life. Not even the lovely Sakura had such green eyes, Neji decided
right there and then.
“Ano… hello?” Neji mumbled as he tried
to remove a few leaves and grass-strands from his long black hair. “Who are
you?”
The red haired figure didn’t answer him
and Neji frowned a bit and then he realized that the boy in front of him was in
dire need of clothes. He was totally naked and Neji could feel a light blush
graze his cheeks. A hand reached out and poked Neji’s nose again and then pulled
back quickly. ‘What’s up with this guy?’ thought Neji as he tried to
figure out to whom this boy could belong. The hair and the eyes were like
nothing Neji had ever seen in his life. He couldn’t place the face with anyone
in the village and that made the prodigy of the Hyuuga’s very confused. He
activated his Byakugan, a skill that enabled him to see the chakra and the
chakra-points in a person’s body and again, he couldn’t see any resemblance with
this boy’s energy with someone in the village.
And by the looks of it, this boy surely
could use a bath and a hair cut. The dirt clinged to the scrawny body and the
red tresses of hair was clogged with mud. Neji frowned as he watched the boy as
he crouched not far from the Hyuuga. A flicker of some sort went trough Neji as
he sat up in front of the boy, who immediately moved away a bit and by the looks
of it, the boy was afraid of Neji.
“Who are you?” asked Neji as he tried to
figure out the naked boy’s heritage.
The boy just tilted his head a bit as if
he couldn’t understand what Neji said to him. The white eyed young man frowned
more and began to feel a bit uncomfortable with the whole situation. The red
haired boy didn’t seem to understand what he was saying and that disturbed Neji
very much. The boy looked old enough to understand him, he had to be at least 12
years old, or so the Hyuuga thought.
“What is you name?” asked Neji.
No answer, just a curious look and then
the red haired boy leaned forward and found a few tresses of silky black hair.
Neji tried not to shiver as the dirty
fingers moved through his tresses. Suddenly his face came very close to the boy
that now was sitting next to him. The look in the boy’s eyes told Neji that he
was very interested in Neji’s long black hair.
“Ano… w-what are you doing?” asked Neji
and silently cursed the fact that he had been stuttering.
The boy almost jumped away and Neji
could see the fear in those aquamarine depths. The boy hissed venomously at Neji
and that made Neji very confused. The boy behaved as if he never had seen a
human before in his life, in fact – the boy acted as if he was a wild animal.
‘If he acts like an animal… perhaps
he is an animal…?’ Neji thought and tried to
figure out a way to try and communicate with the roughed up boy. ‘This boy is
not used to be around people, a wild child? How long has he been here? Who put
him here? Has he runaway from home?’ The questions drifted through Neji’s
head and it disturbed the young Hyuuga that he couldn’t find any answers to
them. ‘And you really need a bath….’ The thought shot through Neji’s head
uninvited. And as a light breeze made the boy’s hair move, Neji could clearly
see a burning red tattoo on his forehead. A tattoo on such a young boy? Now that
was disturbing, especially since it looked as if the boy barely hit his teens.
But that also meant that the boy at one time had been with other humans.
Deciding he would try and get the boy to
open up to him and not fear him, Neji pointed a finger to his chest and said:
“Neji.” And then he pointed towards the boy’s chest and waited for an answer but
got nothing. The boy just looked at Neji with weary green eyes.
Neji repeated the action and this time
he got a response from the wild eyed boy.
“G’rra.” The sound startled Neji a bit.
‘Ehh… did he just said his name?’
thought Neji and motioned the boy to repeat his word again. He pointed towards
his chest and said his name again and then he pointed towards the boy’s chest
and waited for an answer.
“G’rra,” was the reply Neji got again,
it sounded more like a dog’s growl but Neji was certain that this was the boy’s
name and tried to form it into his human tongue instead.
“G’rra… Gaara?” asked Neji and saw the
confirmation in the boy’s facial features. “Gaara… - Neji – Gaara…”
Neji pointed back and forth between them and got confirmation
from the boy. The wild child’s name was Gaara.
Neji could see that every time he moved,
the boy would step back as if he was afraid that Neji would attack him or
something. Neji tried his best not to look all intimidating as he moved around.
He found his bag and reached into it and found an apple and picked it out. He
held it out to the boy in front of him but when the boy just looked at him Neji
decided to take a bite out of the apple and chewed it with the noises of
something that tasted good before he offered the red fruit again to the boy.
“Apple,” said Neji and pointed towards
the fruit. “Apple is mmmm, tasty…”
‘I can’t believe that I’m really
doing this…’ thought the otherwise so composed
Hyuuga-prodigy. But there was something in those blue-green depths that spoke to
him, something that made Neji want to protect this boy from everything.
Something within this boy made Neji want to hold him close, making sure that he
never was afraid…. Ever! ‘Perhaps I’m sick and have a fever and this is just
a dream…?’
Neji was glad when the strange boy
accepted his gift and he could see how the boy put his mouth against the red
apple and take a generous bite out of it.
*Hair like the flaming redness of
Life.
Skin like the innocence of Snow.
Eyes like the world wide Ocean.*
The words sprouted inside Neji’s head
and he reached into his bag again and found his notepad and without noticing the
curious looks from his “prey”, he began to scribble down the words that flowed
to him. It was a well hidden secret that Neji wrote poetry and from time to time
sketched what ever came into his mind. Over the years he had become rather good,
but he never showed it to anyone although he suspected that Hinata knew, but she
never said anything.
Neji was brought out of his thoughts
when he felt a warm hand on his wrist. He looked up and drowned in a pair of
green eyes. The boy’s eyes were something he never would forget even if this
turned out to be a fever dream.
“N’ji”
“What is it Gaara?” asked Neji as he saw
the questioning look in the boy’s face. He couldn’t explain it, but the boy’s
touch made him want things that never had wanted before. This boy made the ever
so composed Hyuuga want something more than just friendship. Neji’s eyes widened
a bit as the knowledge sunk into his heart.
A tug on his hair and then two pale arms
reached for his back pack. He could hear the smacking of lips and Neji chuckled,
the boy wanted another apple? Neji felt that he couldn’t deny this boy anything
and reached into his bag and fished out another apple and gave it to the red
haired youth.
“You liked that… didn’t you… Gaara…?” he
whispered as he watched the naked boy grab his offering and devour it. The name
rolled over Neji’s lips like the sweetest wine and it made him feel mushy
inside.
Neji looked at the sun and knew it was
time for him to head back home, but what about the boy? Could he really leave
this one behind? Neji rose to his feet and picked up his back pack and then he
turned to look at the red haired youth. Neji made a gesture with his hand,
silently telling the boy to come with him before he began to walk away.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Neji sat up late that night. He had
waited for the boy to follow him back to his house, but Neji had been wrong. The
boy never came and Neji sighed and began to wonder again if it all had been some
sort of dream. The milky-eyed young man walked into his small house and shut the
door behind him. He removed his clothing and laid down on his rolled out futon.
As he closed his eyes he was haunted by a pair of glowing green-blue eyes. The
young boy’s eyes. Gaara.
