I closed my
eyes and sighed, as I swung on my favorite swing, attached to my favorite tree,
in front of my favorite old school. “This’ll be a great day!” I sang happily-
and just as I said that, clouds grew over head, quickly, and began to rain.
“Damn…”
“Yo, Demon-boy.”
I heard a voice calling out towards me. I looked over only to see a smirking
Sasuke. He was about the age of 16, and has grown to be quite tall and
muscular. I glared at him.
“What do
you want? Cant you see I’m busy?!” I snapped at him.
“Busy? Doing
what? Swinging on the swing of our childhood?”
I blushed at the sound of
that. Childhood. It makes me feel so young and immature. Maybe even a little
weak. “What’s it to you!?” I asked in a most charming manner, if I do say so
myself.
“M’mm,
nothing much.” Sasuke replied as he started making his way towards me. “You
know, Iruka built this swing here special
for you…”
I closed my
eyes in pain, remembering last year, as he was brutally slaughtered by a spy
from another village.
“Shut up,
okay?”
Sasuke
narrowed his eyes at me. “I don’t have to.”
I glared
dangerously at the black haired boy. “Just shut up, alright?!?” I barked back,
feeling anger build up inside of me that has remained there since the death of
my beloved old sensei. “Just… shut up…” I pleaded finally.
A flash of
lightning brightened up the dark sky, and a loud crack of thunder could be
heard- rolling around on the hills of Konoha.
Sasuke
looked down at me. I couldn’t help but notice how he looked right then. His
hair all wet from the rain, strands attaching itself to his cheeks. It was dark
and dreary, but Sasuke seemed to be like the rain’s companion. He looked so
natural in the rain. His pale face looking down at me, tears from the clouds
dripping off his nose and chin. Though, right now, his eyes look calm, and
maybe even a little sad.
Sasuke took
hold of one of the ropes holding up the swing, and he rested the side of his
face on it, comfortingly and continued to look at me. “Naruto,” he started,
“people actually care about you.”
This was
alarming. Why’d he say that? “What about you? All the girls in Konoha are in
love with you!”
These words
seemed to be too bitter for Sasuke’s tastes, for his eyes narrowed as he was
remembering Sakura and Ino, and all the pretty girls reading fanfics about him
right now.
“No,
Naruto. It isn’t the same. I don’t care how many people think they like me, as long as the one person I like, I’m sure likes me. But, unfortunetly,
that person doesn’t, so it doesn’t matter.”
“So what, if it doesn’t matter?! Your
still liked by everybody!”
“I’m not,
Naruto. People look at me, and think of a mysterious boy, that they’d love to
get knocked up by—just because they cant have me. Whoever wins Sasuke firsts
wins bragging rights all around the world! I’m a trophy more than anything.
They don’t really love me or like me… They just think they do.” Sasuke said
soberly.
“Oh… I
didn’t know, Sasuke, I’m sorry…”
Sasuke
narrowed his eyes towards me. “Don’t be, Moron!
Like I said- I don’t care. It doesn’t matter.”
“Then why
are you telling me this?” I asked, innocently.
Sasuke
paused for a second, and replied quietly “I don’t know. Maybe, I guess, its because your like me…”
My eyes
widened in a weird manner to what he said. Like him? I’m nothing like him. He tried
to join a snake man, in hopes to kill his brother! I am NOT like that!
The rain
pitter-pattered loudly. Discomfort
filled the air.
Sasuke
smiled warmly at me. “Iruka was like a father that you never had. That must
mean so much to you… Without him—“
“—We
are without him!”
“…”
I sighed,
still not liking the topic chosen out for this rainy day.
“Someone
cared for you.”
“Nobody
cares for me.”
Sasuke
narrowed his eyes at me with discuss as if he wanted to hit me hard for my
stubbornness or something.
“Never say
that again!!” he snapped at me.
I glared at
him. “Nobody cares for me, and nobody will care for me, and nobody cares about
pathetic, idiotic, weak Naru—“
Sasuke
interrupted me by punching me in the face, knocking me off of the swing.
“Stop
pitying yourself!!” He yelled at me. “Only weak people do that, Naruto, and your not weak!”
How could
he be saying this? My rival—no, my enemy saying
that people cares about me, and that I’m not
weak. What’s up with him?
I turned my
face to the side, resting my cheek on the wet grass below.
Sasuke
signed and turned away from him. “Naruto… I—I-- ….” He sighed, his face turning
red before my very eyes. “I-- … I know that people care about you.” He said,
turning his back on me, and slowly walking off.
I looked up
to the sky as some droplets of rain fell on my face. “What was that all about?”
I wondered. “Iruka-sensei…” I started making my way back home as well.
The next
morning I walked down to the flower shop. There I saw the blond haired, loud
mouthed, Ino. She was sitting behind the desk at the shop, and waved at me as I
walked in.
“Hey there, Naruto!”
I was still
bitter from yesterday. My pride had gotten the best of me, and what I said was
right was right, so nobody cared about me. That’s what I kept saying in my head
all night. ‘Nobody cares,’ ‘Nobody cares,’ “Nobody cares,’, and yet, Ino was
standing right there, waving at me, and greeting me. It wasn’t enough though.
It wasn’t anything like Iruka had given him… or what he wanted to be given.
“Hey,” I
groaned. “Could I please get some tulips?”
“Sure, what
for?” She asked me, politely.
“I’m going
to be visiting the cemetery.” I said, miserably feeling guilt for not going
there last night.
“Oh, then
you’d like to buy an even amount of flowers!” She chirped to me, winking.
“Why even?
I was just thinking about buying one.
“Well, you
know what they say, don’t you?”
I shook my head, and she
frowned, and soon after grinned.
“Odd
amounts of flowers are for the living, but even amounts of flowers are for the
dead.” She said it so smoothly too, as if this was a law or something.
“Oh, okay,”
I cautioned, browsing the store for some tulips.
I
eventually found the ones I wanted, and I bought them. 4 white tulips. (I wanted
to give two to Iruka, and two to our beloved previous hockage.)
On the way
to the cemetery, I saw Sasuke again.
I tried to
ignore him, but as he walked by he grabbed my wrist.
“What’s
wrong?” I asked, freaking out and looking at him. His grip only tightened on
me. “Let go! Your hurting me!” I pleaded.
He let go.
“Naruto, there’s something I need to talk to you about.” Sasuke said quietly.
“Can it
wait? I’m kinda have somewhere I already want to go.”
Sasuke
looked down at himself pitifully. “Forget it.” He said, and he began to walk
away.
The way he
said that made me feel that what he wanted to tell me, he was probably debating
about saying in his head for a long time.
I managed
my way to the cemetery, and there I saw where Iuka’s grave was, Kakashi,
sitting down next to it, with his “Come, Come, Paradise”
book in his hands.
“Yo,” I
hollered, sitting down on the other side of the grave. Kakashi seemed too into
his book to notice I had arrived, so I placed the two flowers there in front of
the tomb-stone and informed the dead Iruka that he better be
okay being dead and all, or that I’d have to come after him.
I sighed
and stood up.
“Naruto,”
Kakashi spoke.
“Yes, Sensei?”
“Cut Sasuke
some slack,”
“What do
you mean, Sensei? I am cutting him all the slack I can give him!”
“There is
something you don’t know about him, Naruto, that’s eating him from the inside.
If you were just a little patient, and listened to what he wanted to tell you—“
Was Kakashi
listening into them?
I narrowed
my eyes towards him. “I know all I need to know about him!”
“No, you
don’t.” He said, looking up at me with a firm eye.
I sneered.
“Naruto, he
needs someone. He needs help.”
“What, is
he going to kill himself at night?” I said sarcastically. Kakashi didn’t say
anything, just stared at me, making me feel uneasy.
It suddenly
became cold.
“I’m giving
you a suggestion. It would be wise if you’d hear him out.”
I couldn’t
say no to Kakashi, so I only nodded in agreement, and started walking away,
bitterly.
“Oh, and Naruto?”
I stopped
and turned my head.
“Sleep well
tonight.” He grinned.
