----------A Saturday Evening----------
The night air was warm and the breeze gentle as it flowed through the Ichiraku Ramen Stand, rippling the cloth flaps announcing the name of the place so that they wuffled softly. Inside the stand, by himself and leaning heavily on the counter on his folded forearms, sat Umino Iruka. Well-known throughout the village as a kind and rather gentle man, Iruka was liked by pretty much everyone, friendly to all and great with children. At least, that's what everyone always told him, in which case he simply blushed and scratched the side of his nose, fingering the scar that ran from one side to the other in a thin swath of collegian.
Sighing Iruka lifted one hand and rested his chin on the heel of his hand as he stared vacantly into space. ::He's late... like usual... Maybe I should just start coming late myself. No. The one time I try that, and he'll be on time. It wouldn't work. Definitely a plan that would backfire in my face. Besides... I'd feel like I was ditching him, or something...:: Another sigh escaped his lips, and he switched palms to give his wrist a break.
"Waiting for Kakashi again?" the cook asked, refilling Iruka's water glass. Kakashi and Iruka had made it a habit to meet each other at the Ichiraku for dinner at least once a week now that Kakashi's team had left with new mentors, leaving him feeling a little lonely. Well, Orochimaru wasn't really a mentor, but...
Iruka started and then blushed very palely across the bridge of his nose along the scar. "Hai, O-chan. Arigatou..." he murmured and took a sip of the newly refilled water glass. "He's always late like this... I'm used to it," he answered softly and set the glass down again. ::I suppose I could tell him an early time so that we both arrived around the same time... and although he's never 'stood me up' so to say... No, I couldn't lie to a friend like that. This is just how he is. It's fine. I don't mind waiting.::
"Nandemonai. At least he hasn't broken his record yet, ne?" the cook joked. The longest time Iruka'd had to wait was almost four hours, and tonight he'd only been waiting for an hour and a half... so far.
"Yeah... I don't know how he does it..." Iruka murmured. Of course he was used to it by now, considering he'd been patiently waiting on Kakashi's company for dinner once or twice, sometimes even three times a week for the last four months. Honestly, Iruka was surprised that things had become so much of a habit between them. The friendly dinners out and companionable evenings drinking at one another's homes... It was comforting... and routine, something that was quite rare at this point and time in a ninja's life in Konohagakure. ::And to think it all started as simply as that...::
----------Four Months Previous----------
"Hey, have you noticed that Kakashi's been acting weird lately?" Asuma asked randomly as he walked next to Kurenai through the busy market district, cutting her off in the middle of saying something. "He's spaced out a lot more than normal..."
"Kakashi?" Kurenai repeated and thought for a long moment. He had seemed a lot more out of it than he normally did. "I've noticed he spends a lot of time alone. A lot more than he used to anyway... He used to sit in the break room and talk to us, but more often than not he's not around. I've only seen him a handful of times since... Since Sasuke and Naruto left and Sakura went to Tsunade-Hokage-sama for med-nin training..."
Her words were well thought out, and she said no more than she needed to inform him of everything she had noted. She was a woman that said only what was necessary and very little more.
Iruka froze, shopping bag over one arm, and stepped behind a pole as Asuma and Kurenai paused outside a vending stand in front of him to examine the fruit they'd come to get for their drinks. It wasn't that he disliked the two Jounin, but their words had caught his attention. Something worried him that they wouldn't continue the subject if he were to approach them and for some reason he felt a deep pang of sympathy for the third and absent Jounin, Kakashi. He missed Naruto himself. It was like losing a little brother almost, and part of trying to get along in his own life was learning to cope with his new loneliness, something he hadn't felt since he, himself, had been in the academy. Slowly, his eyes dropped to the groceries in his bag as he listened a little more. The more information he gathered, the more successful he'd probably be...
"Yeah..." Asuma examined a pile of apples, looking for the best ones. "Most of the time, when I see him, he's coming back from the monument. At least that's the direction he's coming from. And it's usually really late at night. Probably talking to Obito, but I haven't seen him so... introverted since Sandaime's funeral." He picked up an apple and looked it over carefully before handing it to Kurenai. "It's always hard when your first team of Genin goes their separate ways." He held up another one for her scrutiny.
She nodded, both to the apple and to the statement. "It is hard," she agreed. There was really nothing more she could say. They had already tried to invite him to spend time with them, but he either never showed - something one could expect of him regularly - or he simply apologized politely and turned them down. She just hadn't realized how much the norm it had become. "I've seen him coming home from the monument several times myself... come to think of it..." she murmured and grabbed a bushel of strawberries to exam them before purchase as well.
A plan ready in his mind, and with more than enough information, Iruka headed home. ::It's supposed to rain tonight...:: he thought absently and headed right into his small kitchen, laying out his groceries and pulling a few things out of the cupboards. Once dinner was stewing, Iruka turned to his closet and dug deep into its neatly organized depths. It had to be in there somewhere...
----------Midnight----------
It was raining - freezing cold rain at that - but Kakashi didn't care. He stood before the monument with his head bowed, hands in his pockets, and his wet hair hanging in his face. He didn't even shiver as cold raindrops fell into his collar to further soak his shirt. Only the sound of the rain hitting stone, grass, and trees filled the clearing. Kakashi said nothing because there was nothing to say, not after coming here every day for a month straight except for long missions. He hadn't gotten any news about Sakura's improvements, or Naruto's adventures, in over a week, so there was nothing new to tell the spirits in the large stone. And he'd already asked all his questions ten times over without answer from his deceased comrades, told all his worries... He just felt numb, and it wasn't the rain's fault.
Holding the umbrella tightly in one hand, Iruka froze and shifted the saran wrap covered bowl of stew so that he held it more firmly in the curl of his other arm. His eyes had settled on the figure of Kakashi standing so forlornly in the rain, and it had chilled his heart with a familiar ache. Seeing others in pain always hurt him. Kakashi had lost so much, or so Iruka had heard over the years from various sources. Taking a deep breath to steel his nerve, and with a resolve like iron, Iruka stepped forward once more, certain that the Jounin would sense him before he got too close.
Kakashi had sensed Iruka when he'd stepped into the clearing but hadn't even twitched. He figured it was just someone else who couldn't sleep and decided to pay the monument a visit. Thus he was surprised to feel a heavy cloak settle on his shoulders, the kind that Anbu normally wore. Turning his head slightly he saw Iruka standing next to him, holding his umbrella so that it shielded both of them from the rain.
"Hey," Iruka said softly as his hand dropped from draping the cloak over Kakashi's shoulders. It had taken some juggling but he'd managed to do it around the bowl and umbrella with a Ninja's skill. "You look like you could use some company... And a warm dinner. Do you like stew?"
Silently, Kakashi nodded slightly and took the offered bowl after taking a moment to break a pair of chopsticks. He didn't even have to ask for Iruka to turn away, since he had already politely done so, waiting patiently for him to finish eating. Kakashi pulled down his mask and began to eat in silence, murmuring a “Thank you” when he was done.
----------Back to Present Time----------
"Yo," Kakashi said as he walked into the Ichiraku, unknowingly interrupting Iruka's reminiscing.
"Only two hours late," the cook said jokingly. "For you, that's on time."
Iruka started and put a hand to his thumping heart. He'd been so lost in his memories that he hadn't even heard the cloth flaps brush the cloth of Kakashi's sleeve. Had it though? Shaking his head Iruka smiled. "Hi," he said and gestured to the stool next to him. "What kept you this time? Another old woman ask you to dance, or did some little girl need your help carrying groceries?" he teased lightly, eyeing Kakashi with heavy skepticism.
"No, this time I found a stray kitten and took it to the vet clinic," Kakashi said with a completely straight face as he sat down next to Iruka.
"Hontou ni?" Iruka asked his expression suddenly a little more open than before. Sometimes, on the rare occasion, Kakashi told the truth as to why he was late. At least that excuse sounded pretty legitimate to Iruka anyway. "The usual for me, please, O-chan," he said to the cook, most of his attention on the silver-haired Jounin sitting beside him.
"Mmmm... nope," Kakashi grinned. In reality, he'd taken a long nap that had been a lot longer than planned, but he wasn't going to tell Iruka that. The school teacher would just tell him to get an alarm clock again. "Usual for me, too."
"Mm," Iruka half-groaned and turned back to the counter. He'd almost been forgotten again. Typical. At least he really hadn't ever been stood up entirely before... unless you could count a four hour wait as being stood up. And really, calling it a "stand up" didn't work because it was never a date. Sighing, he glanced at the clock and stated, "It's almost eleven... what do you want to do after this?"
Sometimes they got together after dinner and drank, and sometimes they got together and went to the monument. There were other times that they just went their separate ways as well, and he was never sure which kind of night it would be with Kakashi getting more missions than Iruka ever got.
Kakashi nodded in thanks as the cook set a bowl of ramen in front of him and broke a pair of chopsticks. "My place?" he asked, wanting to spend time with Iruka tonight. At Kakashi's apartment they could drink and talk in peace, and tonight... tonight Kakashi wanted to test something.
"Do we need to buy sake, or do you have enough?" he asked while nodding to the cook and with a soft, "Thank you," Iruka broke his own chopsticks, digging into his bowl of beef flavored ramen. There wasn't a place around that could compete with the Ichiraku for ramen. He'd brought Naruto here all the time since the boy had been in the academy. Idly, he wondered where the feisty, blond young man was... and what he was learning from the Legendary Frog Hermit.
"I have enough." Kakashi downed his ramen with his usual speed and waited patiently for Iruka to finish. He pulled out his wallet and handed the cook enough money to pay for both their dinners before Iruka could protest - and he always did when Kakashi treated him. "How are your classes going? Little monsters behaving themselves?" he asked curiously, wanting to hear about Iruka's day. It had to have been more interesting than his own, most of it spent sleeping since he hadn't had a mission.
“Thank you, Kakashi-san.” Finishing off his ramen, Iruka licked his lips and polished off his water as well before answering, "The 'little monsters' are behaving themselves a little too much..." He sighed and looked to Kakashi with the worried eyes of someone sensitive enough to say, "They're as worried as I am about this war. They know we're short on man power... and they’re scared. It leaves them more subdued than I’d like them to be…”
"Aa..." Kakashi said softly, understanding why Iruka preferred it when his students truly were little monsters. A subdued child was a child growing up much too fast, and the children of Konoha were already asked to grow up quickly when there wasn't a war going on. Kakashi knew what growing up during a war was like very well. ::Come to think of it, I don't think I even had a real childhood...:: Shaking his head at himself he stood up and asked, "Ready to go?"
"Hai," Iruka sighed and stood, pushing his troubles on the job out of his mind for the time being. This was supposed to be his time to relax and enjoy the company of a good friend, not the time to mope and worry over something he literally had no control over. It wasn't a long walk to Kakashi's, and they were soon on his door step, Iruka waiting patiently for the Jounin to open the door.
--------------------
"So, why don't I ever see you with anyone?" Kakashi asked curiously into a lull in their conversation as he poured himself another cup of sake, not even close to halfway through his bottle. He was sitting on the floor of his living room, leaning sideways against the couch with Iruka at his back. They always drank like this, using each other as backrests. That way Kakashi didn't have to worry about Iruka seeing his face, and Iruka didn't feel rude for not making eye-contact with him. Plus, it was very comfortable this way, leaning back against another warm body.
Iruka was quiet for a long moment and then answered softly, "I'm with people all the time." He wasn't sure if Kakashi had really asked what he'd thought he'd heard, so just to be on the safe side a vague answer was best. Or, at least, that's what his mind was telling him at the moment. He wasn't really drinking his bottle either. Tonight just didn't seem like a night for their normal intake of alcohol. They never got roaring drunk, but they usually both left the encounter with faintly flushed cheeks.
He had been asking what Iruka had thought he was asking. There was another long pause, and then Iruka answered again, his voice still soft. "I don't know... I just... haven't been with anyone. There just hasn't been an… opportunity... for me to be," he said with thoughtful pauses. It wasn't something he had thought about before, and he wasn't exactly certain how he felt about it, or what he thought of it. It was simply "the way things had been" so far in his life.
"Liar. I bet you've had plenty of opportunities and you've just never jumped up to take them," Kakashi accused gently, taking a sip from his cup. He was asking because he was honestly curious about why Iruka never seemed to be in a relationship with anyone. Did it mean he was keeping himself open for that one, special person, or that that he was too shy for a serious relationship, or did he just not want one...?
"Kakashi," the younger man began, looking down into the mouth of his bottle and swirling the liquid a little. "The only offers I've ever received were from married women. I'm not about to take them up on it." It was, sadly, the truth. No one had shown interest in him except women looking for one night stands with someone who wouldn't treat them as possessions. Certainly, Iruka wouldn't do that, but he wasn't the type to do something as disgraceful as sleep with another man's wife.
::Because I've lost everyone that I ever let close to me... and I'm afraid to lose more... At least, I was... Now that I've had a team of Genin I realize just how much I missed people, but now they're gone too... and I'm lonely. Are you lonely too, Iruka?:: Kakashi thought, staring into his cup. Sighing quietly he downed his cup and poured himself another one. "Konohamaru still causing as much trouble as he used to?" he asked, not wanting to answer Iruka's question. "He still trying to live up to Naruto's legend?"
A sad smile graced Iruka's lips, and he nodded, looking back into his own cup. Finishing it off, he poured another and said, "Hai... Although, he does behave a little better in class than Naruto did. I think it's out of principle... because of Sandaime-sama." :: I don't want to push him... but should I just let that question slide without at least some form of answer? It doesn't... feel right like that.::
"That and it's pretty hard to beat Naruto in misbehaving," Kakashi said with a quiet chuckle. They continued in that vein for a long time before finally changing subject, and Kakashi never gave Iruka the chance to ask again why he didn't have anyone special.
Deep into the early morning Kakashi looked at the clock on his bookshelf and said, "I think it's time for you to head home... Good thing you don't have classes tomorrow."
"Ha~i," Iruka yawned hugely and stood up. He stretched, arching his back, and then headed into the kitchen without even glancing at Kakashi. When the sake bottle was back where it belonged, he stretched and turned around, having heard Kakashi approach behind him. "Thank you, Kakashi-san," he said with a smile, closing his eyes.
Kakashi returned smile, his mask back in place. "Anytime. You know you're welcome whenever." He walked Iruka to the door but stopped just as he got the door halfway open. "Random question, but... Have you ever thought about having a relationship with anyone?"
Iruka started and cast his eyes to Kakashi’s feet. The question was sudden and entirely out of the blue. "I - ....iie," he managed to mutter feeling a little taken off guard by the spontaneity of the question.
Thinking fast and making a decision, Kakashi pulled his mask down. He gently took hold of Iruka's chin and lifted his face so that their eyes could meet. "How about I give you something to think about?" he said quietly, leaning in to give Iruka a soft kiss. The warm embrace of lips only lasted a second before Kakashi pulled away slowly.
Absolutely stunned, Iruka stared wide-eyed as the color rose to his cheeks, spreading over the scar across his nose. "Ka-Kakashi-san..." he stammered, unable to really get his brain to connect with his mouth at the moment.
Kakashi just gave him a brilliant smile before pulling his mask back up. "Oyasumi, Iruka," he said cheerily, gently steering him towards the door and waiting for him to head out on his own. If he wanted to leave, anyway.
Iruka stepped out the door as though someone had slapped him. Stunned. He was completely stunned. Had he drunk more than he'd thought? He waved over his shoulder, but it was more automatic than responsive, and muttered, "Oyasumi." The walk home seemed to take no time at all and when he finally fell into bed... he was just and stunned as he'd been originally. His mind kept... skipping backwards from the moment he'd heard cloth rustle - the familiar sound of Kakashi pulling off his mask - and then those warm fingers on his chin and then... Iruka buried his face in the pillow. He'd know if it had been a alcohol induced vision soon enough. A hangover would tell all.
After Iruka had left, Kakashi's smile had gentled to just a quiet upturn of his mouth. Iruka's reaction had been very amusing, but Kakashi had honestly hoped he would have considered his silent offer of companionship that was more than just as friends. It had been years since Kakashi'd last been with someone, and it had always been purely casual in the past and always short-lived. He knew he was taking a risk at losing Iruka as a friend by doing this, but Kakashi wanted to be with someone like that again... and more. There was also the risk of losing Iruka in the way he'd lost everyone else close to him, but he'd been so long without someone close that he was willing to take that risk... He and Iruka were already on their way to being close, so why not go farther?
His mind stayed on that track for the rest of the night, even as he fell asleep.
----------The Following Monday----------
In front of one of his large classes of academy students, Iruka spoke firmly to his students about discipline and learning real chakra control... even as his mind wandered. ::I'm still surprised... I feel like an idiot... I don't remember anything but the feel of his...:: A faint blush started to tinge Iruka's face and he faltered momentarily, but caught himself quickly, continuing. "...Once your physical energy and spiritual energy are mixed into chakra there's no turning it around. It's important that you learn to channel you chakra properly since it's where a lot of your stamina will be lost. Stamina on the battlefield is crucial..." Even though he was trying to give the lecture his full attention, his mind simply kept wandering and as he wound down his explanation of why chakra control was so important, his mind completely wandered away that single moment so early on Sunday morning. That faint blush returned quickly as Iruka zoned. It was only for the span of a moment as he stared down into his lecture notes on the board, but he was dealing with a class of near-teenagers. There was no hope that a slip like that would go unnoticed... not that he had realized his mistake yet.
Spotting a chance to escape and cause mischief, Konohamaru nudged his partners in crime and the three of them started creeping for the door. The rest of the class didn't pay attention, used to their escape attempts, though many were wondering just how close they'd make it to the door this time. For once it looked like they had a decent chance to succeed.
Something triggered in Iruka's mind and the words were out of his mind before he was fully back to himself. "Ko-no-HA-MARU..."
Konohamaru eeped quietly and made a final dash for the door - which was only a couple feet away - with Moegi and Udon on his heels. They were almost free!
Iruka was between them and the door before they'd put the first foot into their desperate dash on the floor. "Back to your seats," he demanded with his arms folded, looking down at them sternly. Then he pointed when they seemed to linger a little too long. "Class isn't over yet."
"Aw crap," Konohamaru grumbled, shoving his hands in his pockets and leading his friends back to their seats. So close!
Watching them until they were back in their seats, Iruka sighed with exasperation. When Moegi, Udon and the mischievous ringleader, Konohamaru, were all seated once more Iruka resumed his position at the head of the class before the blackboard, piece of chalk still in hand. He hated days when he needed to write lecture notes.... It always meant a messy clean up for him afterwards. They were short on manpower, so if he dirtied it, he cleaned it.
"Now, let's say I wanted to make four Bunshin... To use my chakra properly and not waste any of my energy, I'll judge how much chakra I'll need to perform the task. This time I'll need to gather up thirty-percent of my energy and convert that into chakra for use, leaving me with a full seventy-percent of my chakra left for other Jutsu and plenty of stamina for battle..." Iruka lectured well for the finer side of chakra control. The science of it was simple enough in spoken terms, but when he was done, and had handed the students their pop quizzes to catch those that had not been paying any attention at all in class today, Iruka sat at his desk and his mind immediately wandered to early Sunday morning again.
There were a lot of quiet grumbles and complaints as the quizzes were handed out, but not as many as there would have been in a peaceful time. These children understood just how important it was that they became good ninja.
...Of course, this didn't stop Konohamaru from trying to sneak out again as soon as he was done with his quiz. ::Iruka-sensei sure is spaced out today... Almost there!::
Almost too late, Iruka planted himself between Konohamaru and the door, causing the sneaking boy to run into him. It served the boy right for not looking where he was going. “Back. To. Your. Seat!”
"But I'm done with my quiz!" Konohamaru protested, not moving from his spot. It was the last class of the day and he wanted to go outside! There was no reason for Iruka to keep them other than they were supposed to stay until the final bell.
"The bell hasn't rung."
"But-"
"Your seat. NOW."
"But-!"
"Konohamaru... I said now..."
The young boy was about to keep arguing when the bell rang loudly, and this time he led the whole class in a mass escape of the school, leaving behind a small cloud of papers and dust. It was gorgeous outside that they were free!!
Smirking faintly, Iruka turned back to his now messy desk - cluttered with scattered quizzes as it was - and the blackboard. Both were in need of a good cleaning.
----------That Evening----------
Climbing the steps to his apartment slowly, Iruka wiped his brow with a sigh smearing the mess of chalk even more. It was all over him since he'd decided to clean not only the blackboard and his desk but had also taken the erasers out and beaten them clean.
He grabbed the door knob and inserted his key and looked up at the plain wood door as always while he turned it only to find that the plain wood door had a note attached. Pulling his key from the unlocked door, Iruka pocketed the whole chain and pulled the note free to open it. It read simply: “Hey. Come on over if you feel like it. I'll be waiting.”
Iruka pulled his keys from his pocket and locked the door again immediately. He'd thought a lot about that Saturday and his departure from Kakashi's home that night, and it had brought this intense need to discuss it with Kakashi. He didn't know what they would talk about exactly, or even what they might conclude. He couldn't even fathom beyond the need to talk to the older man about it, but he did want to and that was part of what mattered. He was outside Kakashi's door before he knew it knocking politely.
There was no answer but silence. And the sound of snoring filtering out the cracked-open window.
Cautiously, Iruka grasped the doorknob and turned. To his surprise, it turned easily and opened on silent hinges. Stepping inside, Iruka found the Jounin dead asleep on the couch. He closed the front door softly behind him and stepped forward waiting for Kakashi to acknowledge him. But when he was mere feet away, he realized that Kakashi was, in fact, dead to the world. A soft groan escaped his throat, and he sat on the floor in mild shock at the fact that he was either A: easy to ignore, or B: Kakashi was that strange.
"So... Did you think about it?" Kakashi asked sleepily without opening his eye or moving in the least, waking up a bit at the sound of Iruka's rear meeting floor. The reason he hadn't woken up instantly was he was familiar with Iruka's presence and thus hadn't felt threatened enough... and then his brain remembered that he'd called Iruka over.
He stared in silence for a few moments and then answered quietly, "Yeah..." while drawing up his legs so that they folded before him. Iruka's eyes seemed rooted to the carpet, but his mind was focused to a razor sharpness. ::I wish I could remember what his face looked like... Stupid me! I should have been paying more attention! I'm too easily caught off guard by people I trust... That could be the death of me! Look at Mizuki... God that was a long time ago...::
"And...?" the Jounin prompted, rolling onto his side so that he could easily look at Iruka and folding an arm under head as a pillow. He wanted to know Iruka's verdict. His eye cracked open. "Why do you look like you got dunked in a bag of flour?"
"I ... Oh. I came right over after I left work," Iruka answered looking down at himself and blushing in utter embarrassment. He looked like he'd been beaten with the very erasers he'd beat clean. "Sorry. I'm making an inconsiderate mess of your home..." he stood up intent on going home. He was a little tired and certainly uncertain about the whole situation... though he couldn't deny that he wanted something at least.
"Sit back down, it's fine," Kakashi said without moving, coming a little more awake though it was hard to tell by his tone of voice. "That's what brooms are for. So... verdict?"
"I... don't know. I'm not sure. I thought we'd... talk about it," he said as he slowly sat back down and refolded his legs.
"Okay. So talk. What aren't you sure about?" Kakashi asked, shifting a bit to get into a more comfortable position. ::He looks funny all covered in chalk... heh.::
Iruka rubbed at the side of his nose with his finger, feeling a little self-conscious, but started, "I'm sure that I don't want to lose your friendship for any reason, Kakashi-san, but ...what I'm not sure about... is hard to put into words."
Kakashi sat up and scooted over, making room for Iruka to join him. "You're not going to lose my friendship," he assured as he patted the spot next to him, glad that Iruka'd had the same fear as him. It meant there was a chance for this to actually work... by his logic anyway.
Transferring his rump to the couch, Iruka settled for a minute, easing himself into the cushion and leaning forward to rest his forearms on his knees. "You're the only close friend I have..." he muttered. "I... I want to be close to you, but... at the same time... I've never really had a relationship before." Even as he spoke his self-consciousness brought a brighter blush along that scar than had already been there.
"What's stopping you from trying?" Kakashi asked, reaching over to put a hand on Iruka's shoulder. "If memory serves you were quite adventurous as a kid... Think of it as an adventure."
"This isn't a game, Kakashi-san," Iruka stated bluntly but softly. It wasn't. Not to him. To him... this was stepping out of everything he'd known in his life since the death of his parents. Stepping into a realm wholly unknown to him, a place of intimacy with a person not of his own blood that went far beyond anything he'd shared with anyone.
"I'm not saying it's a game," Kakashi argued. "I'm saying... this is an opportunity for the both of us to... how to put this..." Leaning back he thought for a moment. "I'm saying this is an opportunity for us to have a companion, not just a friend." He sighed and added softly, "And I miss having a companion... I've been alone for a long time, Iruka, and I don't want to be alone anymore."
Iruka lifted his head and slowly looked over his shoulder until he could make eye contact. "I know..." he murmured and leaned back until he rested against the couch back, their shoulders snug together.
"I've always known... because I've always been alone myself." And really he had been. He was so busy with being a ninja and being a good teacher that he had never had the time to do anything else, make friends, or wade into the dating pool. Then he'd met Kakashi and despite the fact that their initial, "formal" meeting had been a bit confrontational, Iruka had recognized him as a ... kindred spirit of sorts. Thus, when Kurenai and Asuma had expressed their concerns, Iruka had acted without any forethought. And here they sat, possibly about to take the next step.
Kakashi wrapped an arm loosely over Iruka's shoulders, his other hand coming over to take gentle hold of Iruka's chin so that they looked directly at each other. "We don't have to be alone," Kakashi murmured as he met the other man's gaze, his eye full of hope. The feel of Iruka's lips on his own had haunted him all of yesterday, something that hadn't happened since his first love, and he wanted to feel them again. But only if Iruka was willing.
He searched Kakashi's face for a moment and then twisted slightly, turning until he had one leg drawn up underneath him on the couch. And then, as Kakashi's hand fell from his chin, he brought both hands up slowly. First his right hand caught Kakashi's hitai-ate, pushing it lightly until it slipped from the other man's brow and almost simultaneous to that his left hand came up. Only that hand went for the mask as the left hand settled limply over Kakashi's shoulder, hitai-ate still tied and dangling in one hand.
His eyes still searching Kakashi's face, he slowly slipped first his forefinger and then each finger after that into the mask, grasping it gently and slipping it down. Whatever Iruka's intentions had been, they flew right out the window instantly.
Freed from the support of the hitai-ate, messy silver hair spilled over Kakashi's left eye obscuring it and it's scarred lid slightly. A straight nose and smooth skin over strong cheekbones, nude-tone, full lips that were oh-so-masculine and oh-so-kissable at the same time... The hitai-ate dropped to the couch cushion behind Kakashi's back and as Iruka's left hand cautiously cupped the soft, smooth line of Kakashi’s jaw - his thumb reaching out to stroke Kakashi's lower lip a little timidly - his right hand gently pushed the fall of soft silver hair out of the way gently. The look on his face was one of intensity and strong concentration, as though he were memorizing every minute detail so that he could see this any time, forever-again.
Smiling quietly, Kakashi kissed Iruka's thumb before slowly leaning forward to capture soft lips, giving Iruka plenty of time to pull away. When there was no resistance he let his eyes slip closed as their lips met in a gentle embrace, a much longer one than the first time. Kakashi shivered a bit at the quiet thrill the contact sent through him, his stomach filled with butterflies. His hand came back up to cup Iruka's jaw, his thumb stroking soft skin. This was bliss.
As both of Kakashi's eyes slid closed, Iruka's own eyelids echoed them. The hand in Kakashi's hair slid through silky locks, every hair cascading back into place readily, until his palm pressed the back of Kakashi's head. There, his fingers curled loosely in the thickness. The hand cradling Kakashi's cheek slid back until he cradled the point of Kakashi's jaw, just below his ear. Hesitantly, he let his lips part slightly, not sure why, but feeling that it was the right thing to do in the moment.
Not one to turn down an opportunity like that, Kakashi parted his lips as well and the tip of his tongue darted out to swipe against the inside of Iruka's lower lip. Very much liking the taste he found there, he let his tongue dive deeper into that warm cavern for a slow, thorough exploration. The hand not on Iruka's jaw found its way into chocolate hair, pulling the hitai-ate and hair tie away. Gentle fingers combed through the freed hair, relishing in the softness of it.
Iruka wiggled, scooting a little closer as he responded to the strangeness of having Kakashi's tongue in his mouth. It wasn't unpleasant and seemed pretty natural, so he didn't resist, but actually let his own tongue timidly caress the other man's. That was a strangely thrilling sensation. One that sent a shiver right through him and he pressed a little more into the kiss, still not bold, but definitely liking everything enough to at least ask for more. There wasn't a thought in his usually overrun brain except for those involving the feel of Kakashi's fingers in his hair, their lips pressed together and gently shifting against each other, and Kakashi's warm, ticklish, curious tongue against his own.
Slowly, Kakashi moved his hands down to Iruka's chest to unzip his vest, pushing it aside. He coaxed it off Iruka's shoulders and let his hands slip underneath Iruka's shirt after pulling his gloves off, running them over his chest caressingly. All the while he deepened the kiss, purring quietly in deep contentment as he coaxed Iruka's tongue into his mouth before continuing his own exploration. He was overjoyed that Iruka was responding so positively.
Being free of the somewhat stiff vest made things even more pleasant, but when Kakashi's hands slipped up his shirt he squirmed, breaking the kiss with an, "Omf... that tickles."
It did tickle, quite a bit in fact, but at the same time it made him feel warm. He met Kakashi's dual colored gaze with a faint flush across his nose and cheekbones. Not a blush at all. "Sorry," he added and glanced away exposing his cheek, his ear and the side of his neck.
Chuckling, Kakashi leaned forward, his warm breath ghosting over Iruka's ear as he murmured, "It's okay." A warm, moist tongue traced the tanned shell before warm lips captured the earlobe, sucking on it gently. Kakashi pushed Iruka's shirt up all the way and over his head, forcing Iruka to lift his arms above his head. Before Iruka could pull his arms free of his shirt, however, Kakashi quickly made it so that his hands were trapped in the fabric. He pushed Iruka down onto his back and leaned over him, kissing and nibbling at his neck lightly as he continued to run his hands over Iruka's chest. He was testing Iruka's boundaries - seeing how far the other man would let him go before pushing him away.
This was a whole new experience in itself for Iruka. The sudden intensified intimacy of the situation made him blush scarlet, but its effect was told best in the soft, whimpery moan that rushed out of his throat as he quivered under Kakashi's mouth. Being laid out on his back directly from the position he'd been sitting in left his right leg curled half under his left leg which still hung off the couch. "Kakashi-san?" he inquired in a soft voice. He was hesitant and not sure what exactly Kakashi's full intentions were in the moment. He wasn't ready to just jump into a physical relationship yet... this was nice, but... he just wasn't ready. It was too sudden. Still, he'd give the Jounin the opportunity to express himself before he put on the brakes. If this was as far as they went then he wasn't going to complain.
Determined to go as far as Iruka would let him, Kakashi trailed his mouth along Iruka's neck down to his collarbones, biting at the thinly-covered bones before moving down to his chest. His eyes dancing mischievously he licked one of Iruka's nipples before tugging on it gently with his teeth. His hands found their way to Iruka's hips, holding him down firmly on the couch cushions. ::Let's see... just how loud can I make him moan?::
That was a little too personal. Iruka squirmed, ignoring the tingling sensations that those two actions sent through him. Nervous, he tried to free his hands. "Kakashi-san," he said more firmly.
Kakashi licked and kissed his way back up to Iruka's ear, suckling gently on the lobe. "Yes?" he purred as he pulled his legs up onto the couch so that he lay on top of Iruka. He noticed the firmness between Iruka's legs - he wasn't very hard quite yet - and decided to "help" him by rubbing their hips together. Kakashi was well on his way to being completely aroused and was hoping Iruka wouldn't push him away.
"Uhnh..." he moaned softly at the rub of Kakashi's hips into his own, but his mind was made up. He wasn't ready to go that far yet. "I can't. Not yet... please..." ::It's too soon... I want to make sure this is right for us before I let this happen....::
Not wanting to force Iruka into something he didn't want to do - no matter how badly he wanted it - Kakashi stopped rubbing and lifted himself so that he was hovering a few inches above Iruka on his elbows and knees. He returned his mouth to its original location against Iruka's, kissing him sweetly.
He couldn't help the smile that turned up the corners of his mouth as Kakashi returned to simply kissing him. Finally freeing his hands, Iruka let the shirt drop to the floor beside the couch and tangled his fingers in Kakashi's hair again, all ten of them lacing in silky silver. He returned the kiss with a little more confidence this time eager to let Kakashi know he appreciated the Jounin's considerate sacrifice.
After a long, sweet moment Kakashi pulled away slowly and smiled down at Iruka. "Want to get something to eat?" he offered, cupping Iruka's cheek in one hand affectionately.
One of Iruka's hands slid from Kakashi's hair to caress his lower lip with gentle fingertips. He was still caught in awe every time he saw Kakashi's face. It wasn't something he'd ever thought he'd see. "How about we order in? I can answer the door... My treat, too," he murmured as his eyes trekking over every handsome inch, following his fingertips to the corner of Kakashi's mouth, over to the point of his jaw. From there they slid lightly to Kakashi's chin along the edge of his jaw.
"Sure." Kakashi smiled wider, leering playfully. "Does the treat include you in just your boxers after we're done eating?" He knew the answer was no but it never hurt to ask.
Iruka's blush was brilliant. "No!" he exclaimed and pushed at Kakashi to get off so he could go call in the order. "What do you want to eat, pervert?" he asked, showing that slightly spunky side. He was a little uncertain what to call Kakashi now. 'Kakashi-san' seemed so impersonal, but it was best to keep calling him that until Kakashi told him otherwise. At least he knew he could get away with calling Kakashi a pervert, so long as it was in good fun anyway.
"You," was Kakashi's immediate answer, a huge grin on his face. He hadn't resisted Iruka's push at all and was now lying on the floor, grinning up at the other man.
"I'm not dinner," Iruka retorted and ran a hand through his hair to settle it while he looked through the phonebook. He'd gotten up as soon as Kakashi'd gotten out of his way and made his way to the kitchen were the phone was. There he could stand half in the kitchen and half in the living room, which he did, leaning against the wall in the entryway between the two. He felt a little self-conscious standing there bare to the waist. "Well? What type of food do you want me to order?" he asked again folding his arms.
"Mmm... Sashimi and natto?" Kakashi suggested, climbing to his feet. Just to be a tease he pulled his shirt off and dropped it on top of Iruka's before walking over. He stood behind Iruka so that he could look at the phonebook over his shoulder... and wrap his arms snugly around Iruka's waist. "How about this one?" he asked right into the other man's ear, his lips brushing against it as he pointed to a number on the page.
Bare skin on bare skin... and that warm, sultry voice right in his ear. Iruka shivered and his eyelids drooped reflexively. It was a good thing he'd been watching the phonebook with his back to the Jounin when he'd removed his shirt. "Sounds good," he murmured and after a moment's debate within his mind, he leaned back against Kakashi's strong body. "I feel short," he muttered softly and picked up the phone. Settling his free arm overtop of Kakashi's arms about his waist Iruka dialed with his thumb. It didn't take him long at all to order and then he hung up. "Twenty to forty minutes," he said softly, looking over his shoulder at Kakashi.
Smirking at Iruka's comment about being short, Kakashi tightened his arms around Iruka's waist and lifted him just enough to carry him over to the kitchen counter. Before the other man could protest Kakashi spun him around and lifted him up onto the counter. "There. Now I'm the short one," he teased playfully, standing between Iruka's legs and smiling up at him. The brunette's neck was right in front of his nose and Kakashi took advantage of it, leaning forward to tease the thick column with his lips as his hands took hold of Iruka's hips.
Iruka's exclamations of indignation were quickly quelled and transformed into soft, breathy, pleased sounds as his neck was tormented lightly by warm, soft lips. His hands slid up Kakashi's arms slowly, reveling in the muscle he found there, until they reached the taller man's shoulders. Coaxing hands drew Kakashi closer and as he tipped his head back a little, closing his eyes, those same hands began to work the corded muscles of Kakashi's shoulders and neck. "Mm," he purred, surprised to find he was thoroughly enjoying this more and more by the minute. His shyness was starting to dissipate a lot faster than he would have thought.
Kakashi moved his mouth to Iruka's shoulder and suckled lightly at the soft skin. Warm hands roamed all over Iruka's torso, kneading the muscled flesh they found there and pulling him closer. The sounds Iruka was making were music to his ears and encouraged him to be as bold as he dared. One set of fingers found a dusky nipple and teased it gently. The hands on his shoulders made him murr happily.
No longer in the compromising position he'd been in on the couch, Iruka accepted this slightly bolder play easily with a low moan that he bent his head to deliver, by complete accident, right into Kakashi's ear while Kakashi sucked lightly at his skin. The double sensation of wet suction on his shoulder and teasing fingers on one budding nipple made Iruka shudder. "Kakashi..." he whispered softly, and his hands flexed on the Jounin's shoulders like a cat kneading in pleasure. Apparently, in these situations, his brain lost all sense of respectful tags.
Moaning himself in response to the moan in his ear, Kakashi lifted his mouth back up to Iruka's ear to whisper entreatingly, "Say that again..." He wanted to feel that delicious thrill again, the one he'd had when Iruka'd whispered his name without any suffix. That was an intimacy he didn't think he'd get so soon from the normally shy and respectful man - not that he thought Iruka was being disrespectful. His hands glided to the sides of Iruka's chest, the pads of his thumbs circling hardening nipples.
It took Iruka a moment to determine what Kakashi was asking of him, but as soon as he realized what it was, and though his blush deepened the faint flush of arousal across his nose and cheekbones slightly - he murmured, "Kakashi..." in the silver-haired man's ear again. It made butterflies in Iruka's stomach to be intimate right down to a lack of the respectful suffix, and the thumbs on his nipples weren't helping.
Kakashi shivered in pleasure trailed his lips along Iruka's jaw until he could capture his mouth in a long, deep kiss before continuing down to Iruka's chest. There he replaced one of his thumbs with warm lips and gentle teeth, teasing the hard bud of flesh to make Iruka moan again. "Again..." he breathed hotly over the moistened flesh before sucking on the nipple.
The kiss had soothed the butterflies. Now there was just a warm, adrenaline sensation in his stomach, and that made him shiver. "Mmm, Kakashi..." he moaned softly. Lacing the fingers of one hand in the hair at the back of Kakashi's head, Iruka let his other hand trail down the Jounin's back, skimming over scars and smooth skin for as far down Kakashi's back as his exploring fingertips could easily reach.
"Iruka..." Kakashi breathed, kissing his way to Iruka's other nipple and shivering pleasantly at the hand on his back. As he gave that one the same treatment as the other his hands slid down Iruka's torso to his hips, thumbs hooking in the waistband of his pants. He was just about to see if he could get Iruka's pants off - at least enough so he could tease the growing erection there, radiating an immense heat - when there was a knock at the door. "Dammit..." he grumbled. Their dinner had arrived.
Iruka jumped and placed a hand over his unnecessarily restarted heart. "I'll get it..." he murmured and pushed gently at Kakashi's shoulders moving him out of the way so he could throw his shirt on and tail his hair low on his neck before answering the door. After a friendly greeting and parting with the delivery boy, Iruka carried the food into the kitchen. "It smells good," he stated with a soft smile and laid it out on the counter in its dishes as Kakashi got everything they'd need to eat out of the cupboards.
Dinner was an enjoyable affair (once Iruka had convinced Kakashi to stop grumping) filled with smiles, laughter, and intimate conversation (when Kakashi could get Iruka to stop staring at him... though that definitely helped in getting him to stop grumping since he was too amused to stay in a bad mood).
Once they were done Iruka got up to put the plates in the sink but he was pulled into Kakashi's lap when he went to Kakashi's side of the table. Kakashi took the plates out of Iruka's hands and set them on the table. "So what's for dessert?" he purred, slipping a hand up the front of Iruka's shirt.
Sitting sideways on Kakashi's lap, Iruka blushed faintly, but held Kakashi's gaze evenly. "What do you want?" he asked, only half-realizing what a loaded question that could be. This close to Kakashi's face again he was more interested in leaning in and kissing the Jounin's jaw line with soft, moistened lips. The hand under his shirt made him shiver inside and he let his mouth trail to Kakashi's ear, timidly taking the lobe and sucking on it gently. This kind of intimate contact was addicting he decided, and wrapped one arm loosely around Kakashi's neck while the other grasped his shoulder, hanging somewhat behind Kakashi's arm.
"You," Kakashi murmured, purring at the delightful sensations Iruka's lips on his ear caused. ::Getting bold, are we? Heh heh heh...:: Taking firm hold of Iruka's hips he maneuvered him until he was straddling Kakashi's lap and pulled him close against his chest. Again he pushed Iruka's shirt up and off so he could dive forward to attach his mouth to Iruka's shoulder, adding to the mark he'd started before. One of his hands freed chocolate hair from the tie and ran through it caressingly while the other settled between Iruka's shoulderblades, holding him close.
Iruka hung his head over Kakashi's shoulder and made soft, pleased noises in the back of his throat as his shoulder and scalp were treated to Kakashi's sensual attention. Hugging Kakashi in a firm embrace Iruka tucked his chin and placed a few experimental kisses on smooth skin. The excitement that coursed through his veins over the fact that he now straddled Kakashi’s thighs was heady, and Iruka chanced a light nip to the side of Kakashi’s neck, made slightly bolder when he received no ill reception.
Kakashi returned the nip with one of his own to the base of Iruka’s neck, moaning quietly as Iruka’s teeth on his own neck stirred the building flame within him. “Iruka...” he purred, kissing and licking his way up to the base of the other man’s jaw, which he teased with light teeth. The Chuunin’s growing boldness was definitely a good sign and Kakashi planned to milk it for all it was worth. He trailed the hand on Iruka’s back down to his rear, loosely cupping one firm cheek and tugging him closer so that their bodies were flush against each other, shivering at the feel of so much skin contact.
Iruka drew a sharp inhalation, causing his stomach to concave for a split second before settling skin to skin with Kakashi’s own firm abdomen. Hip to hip now, Iruka could feel the press of the Jounin’s arousal through their pants. A soft moan slipped past his lips and – completely forgetting himself in the moment – Iruka hooked his legs back a little pressing the balls of his feet to the legs of the chair, rocking his hips forward a little. His own body was reaching full arousal a lot faster than it had so far. He was more comfortable now, and there was already a build-up of sexual tension between them as it was, so his nerves were more focused on the pleasures in the situation than whatever it was that had made him nervous before... His mind wouldn’t tell him exactly what that might have been.
Moving his lips back down to Iruka’s neck, Kakashi slid the hand on Iruka’s rear up only to slide it back down... this time under the pants. Cradling the firm globe of muscle Kakashi trailed his other hand down from Iruka’s hair down his chest and to the front of his pants. Gently he cupped the arousal there, stroking it through the cloth with his thumb. His own erection began to twitch in impatience, anxious for attention, and he groaned deep in his chest. “Iruka...” he moaned against the Chuunin’s pulse, biting at it.
That dragged a deep moan from Iruka’s chest, and he shuddered, clinging to Kakashi’s shoulders as his body was flooded with pleasure. Everything was so different than anything he’d ever experienced before – not that he’d experienced much. “Kakashi,” he breathed, his warm breath ghosting over the silver-haired man’s ear like a caress. The gentle touches made him feel needy and he wanted to ease that feeling. Hesitantly, he rocked his hips forward again.
Kakashi took that as a signal to go farther and he turned his head to kiss Iruka deeply. At the same time he took his hand away from Iruka’s groin to cup the other butt-cheek and lifted Iruka as he stood up, walking quickly towards the couch. Without breaking the kiss he laid Iruka down on the couch before lying down on top of him, curling a hand around the back of Iruka’s neck to pull him deeper into the kiss. His other hand trailed down the Chuunin’s torso to the hem of his drawstring pants. Quickly he undid the knot and loosened the string so that he could slip his hand in, wrapping gentle fingers around Iruka’s erection and beginning a slow pump.
When Kakashi had first stood up, Iruka had clung to him desperately – wrapping his legs around Kakashi’s waist and hugging Kakashi’s shoulders tightly – hoping he wouldn’t be dropped. When he was laid gently on the couch he loosened his grip his mouth eager against Kakashi’s, if a little clumsy yet. And then Kakashi’s strong hand found his arousal and the world completely narrowed to just the two of them and that hand. Groaning loudly, Iruka broke away from the kiss and arched into that wonderfully and yet torturously slow movement.
Smirking wickedly Kakashi increased the pace of his hand slowly and kissed Iruka’s neck where it met his jaw. Moist lips made their way down Iruka’s neck and chest, stopping to tease hard nipples before continuing all the way down to his navel. As Kakashi dipped his tongue into the scar his free hand tugged Iruka’s pants down to mid-thigh, giving him plenty of room to “play”.
Iruka shivered a little as cooler air hit the warm skin of his thighs. Squirming, he managed to slide his own pants and his boxers to his ankles so that they were well out of the way. His body wanted this even if the rest of him wasn't so sure it was a good idea. Not that the rest of him was coherent at the moment. Not with Kakashi's warm, wet tongue dipping in and out of his navel. He was panting and a light sheen of sweat was beginning to coat his body and he felt absolutely delicious. Kakashi made him feel wanted and desirable without saying a word. To him it was a profound notion and one that was very much cherished, but at the moment, the only thing he was able to cherish was the tightening of anticipation in his lower abdomen as Kakashi's mouth began to trail lower.
Just to see Iruka writhe, Kakashi blew lightly on the now very moist navel, causing a massive case of gooseflesh all around it. Smirking at the moan that drew from the Chuunin, Kakashi licked down the trail of fine hair that led from Iruka's belly button down to his throbbing erection. He kissed the leaking head before swiping his tongue along its length from root to head. He was just about to take the head into his mouth when he felt something land on his shoulder.
Growling, he turned his head, giving the little messenger bird on his shoulder an annoyed glare. It just gazed calmly back at him and chirped its message before flying back to the Tower... where Kakashi had just been summoned to go on direct orders from Tsunade. Sighing he crawled back up Iruka's body and gave him an apologetic kiss. "I have to go... I'm sorry..." he murmured. He didn't want to leave... especially not now! Not when things had been getting so good!
"What... Oh," Iruka muttered and tried to get his bearings. ::What was I thinking?!:: "It's ok... Go on..." he murmured, blushing a bright pink across his nose. He almost couldn't believe that they'd almost gone that far! But when Kakashi went to get up he pulled him back down and hugged him tightly a little but of worry and maybe even fear leaked into his voice. "Be careful, ne? We're all tired... and when you're tired... sometimes bad things happen. Come home safely."
Kakashi smiled wistfully and hugged Iruka back just as tightly. "I will... I promise." He gave him a long, deep, reassuring kiss before pulling away reluctantly. He wanted so badly to stay here and finish what they'd started. "I'll come back... to you," he whispered, giving Iruka one last quick kiss before standing up and going to his bedroom for a fresh shirt and his vest. Kakashi left the apartment through his bedroom window, which faced the Hokage Tower. ::This had better be important!::
Iruka sat up slowly, knowing Kakashi was gone already. He sat there for a long, long while and contemplated everything that had transpired, everything that had been said and when he had reached a conclusion he stood, stretched and re-dressed, leaving by the window so that the apartment's front door was locked securely. He headed home, took a long shower to rid himself of the chalk and "ease the tension" a little before he went to bed. He didn't sleep well, but he did get some rest at the very least..
-----------The Hokage Tower----------
"You called?" Kakashi grumbled to Tsunade after appearing in her office in a cloud of Jutsu smoke. If this wasn't important he was going straight back home - or to Iruka's, depending on whether he'd already left - without listening to her at all.
"You have an 'S' class assignment that needs to be taken care of, immediately," Tsunade said instantly and turned her attention to the pile of papers wherein Kakashi's assignment lay. "Who peed in your coffee?" she grouched as she searched.
"You," Kakashi mumbled, but he didn't complain any more since he admitted to himself - reluctantly - that an "S" class mission was important enough to drag him away from Iruka. He just hoped it wouldn't take him very long. His last "S" class assignment had lasted almost a month.
"Atata!" she murmured emphatically and pulled out the paper, handing it to him. "Here. Take it and come back safely. Konohagakure still needs your strength, Kakashi."
Kakashi read the paper over carefully and nodded in understanding as he tucked the sheet into one of his pockets. Without a word he was gone, headed for home to make up his travel pack before leaving later that night.
----------Two weeks later----------
Iruka tapped his pencil eraser impatiently on the desk without even noticing as he stared out the window. Two weeks! Two whole, silent weeks! It was driving him insane! And - as always - immediately after that thought, his mind wandered to the last day he had seen Kakashi. Everything that had transpired was something he'd gone over and over again in his mind and every time he came to the same conclusion. Said conclusion pulled his mind deeper into thought and farther away from his class... for the third time that week.
Looking up from his completed worksheet and noticing that Iruka was completely lost in thought, Konohamaru leaned over to whisper in Udon's ear before leaning to his other side and whispering in Moegi's. The three of them nodded in unison and got up silently, tiptoeing towards the door and freedom.
Iruka remained completely oblivious.
The three troublemakers made it the door and, as soon as they were in the hallway, made a run for it. Time to play! Encouraged by Konohamaru-tachi's success, the rest of the class slowly crept out in ones and twos as the students finished their assignment. It wasn't long before every single kid had escaped to play in the afternoon sun.
Iruka finally came back to himself as the class bell rang... only to find there was no class to dismiss. With a self-deprecating grumble, he lurched to his feet and collected all of the finished worksheets before stuffing them in his portfolio-ish brief and headed out only to run right into Asuma. "Sumimasen, Asuma-san!" he exclaimed and he knelt to pick up his dropped brief.
"Are you alright, Iruka?" Asuma asked as Iruka stood back up. "I hear you've been rather out of it lately."
"I'm fine!" he stated hoping Asuma wouldn't call the bluff as he smiled his usual smile. "Just a little tired lately... Like everyone else."
Asuma raised a doubting eyebrow. "It's not like you to become so distracted that your class escapes on you. Today was, what, the third time this week? Are you sure nothing's wrong?"
Iruka fell silent and looked off to the left as he stood the thin brief held in one hand. "No... I mean, not yet anyway." He seemed to snap back to reality and tried to force a spunky grin. "It'll work out though so... Anyway, I'm fine, thanks, Asuma-san."
"Not yet?" Asuma pried. Iruka was one of the best teachers in the school. All the kids loved him, even the ones who were loathe to admit such a thing. He was also one of the strictest when it came to schoolwork and behavior, making it very unusual indeed that an entire class had managed to disappear right under his nose.
"It's... complicated," he murmured trying to blow it off. He didn't even know how to begin to explain how he felt at the moment. Raising one hand he rubbed the back of his head. "You'd be really bored..."
"Try me."
"Really, you're probably hungry and I've got these papers to grade and -..."
"Iruka. Tell me," Asuma said firmly. He was not going to back down until he knew what the problem was.
"I'm just worried.... about Kakashi. He got called off to a mission two weeks ago and no one's heard anything..." Iruka trailed off into thought again the worry etched on his brow and in his eyes deeply.
That Asuma could understand, especially since he was worried about Kakashi too. He sighed and said, "Well, considering that the mission Kakashi got was 'S' class and confidential to boot, nobody is going to hear anything until it's over. All we can do is wait and hope for the best. I'm sure he'll do just fine and come back home safe and sound."
"I hope so," Iruka murmured and came back to himself. "Thank you, Asuma-san."
"No problem. Hey, tell you what. I'm not teaching any classes right now so how about I take over for your classes until he gets back," Asuma offered.
"I couldn't possible ask you to do that..." he began.
"You're so worried that your classes are escaping on you. Take a break," Asuma insisted. "It'll do you some good."
"I'm afraid of not having anything but worrying to do..." he mumbled, not too pleased with having to argue using his personal feelings for a basis.
"Then go to the onsen or something. Take a nap. Read a book," Asuma suggested. "Right now you're not doing yourself or the kids any good being all worried and distracted. I mean it, take a break."
Iruka stared at him for several long minutes and then smiled softly. Taking his brief in both hands he held it before him and bowed. "Thank you very much, Asuma-san. I appreciate it." The hot springs sounded really, really good right then. And he really wasn't doing anyone any good like he was. "I would like to continue to grade their quizzes and homework... but having you stand in for me during class... would be wonderful."
"Nandemonai. Now you go relax. That's an order. I'll come by your place tonight to get your lesson plans."
Iruka nodded and thanked him with a few more bows and “thank you”s before going off to the hot springs. There he tried to forget his troubles and worries, sinking into the hot water with a relish. He didn't do a good job of it though, his mind constantly wandering back... to Kakashi. ::You had better be ok...:: he thought and covered his eyes with the cooler towel as he tilted his head back a bit.
----------Three Weeks Later, One in the Morning----------
Dead tired and grimy from traveling, Kakashi trudged into his apartment. He had just finished reporting the results of his mission to Tsunade and all he wanted to do was sleep. The mission had gone without any major hitches and he hadn't gotten any wounds except for deep kunai-scratches and sore muscles. Tsunade had been nice enough to heal the scratches but his muscles he had to deal with on his own. After a very long, hot shower Kakashi managed to pull a pair of boxers on before falling into bed, asleep before he hit the mattress.
----------Six That Very Morning----------
Iruka, scarcely daring to breath, tiptoed into Kakashi's bedroom and froze halfway through the door. Asuma had called him two hours ago to inform him that Kakashi had returned, tired, bone-weary and a little sore but other than that no worse for wear. He'd managed to contain himself for those two hours, but had finally reached his limit and headed to Kakashi's place to reassure himself that all was well... and here he could see that it was. Kakashi slept peacefully the blankets covering his face in place of his mask. He watched silently for several long minutes before he moved over and stood over the silver-haired Jounin. Another few long moments passed before he leaned down and very light pushed some stray locks of silvery hair out of the way to ghost gentle lips over Kakashi's temple. Glancing up then, he noted the vacant space between Kakashi and the wall. Straightening with a focused look on that spot, Iruka, feeling the fatigue of the last few weeks nearly as much as the Jounin himself, pulled off his vest...
----------Mid-afternoon----------
Feeling wonderfully rested and comfortable, especially after over a month of sleeping in a bedroll on the ground, Kakashi took a deep breath and stretched his arms above his head as he came awake. He tried to roll onto his stomach but was stopped by... an arm around his waist? Confused Kakashi looked over his shoulder, only to smile at the sight of Iruka sound asleep and snuggled up to his back. "Iruka..." he murmured. "I~ru~ka..."
The Chuunin looked as tired as Kakashi had felt, lending to the belief that - like the mother hen he sometimes was - when Iruka worried, he worried himself near to sick. It took a moment but he did stir and grunt softly to acknowledge that someone was talking to him, but he seemed too comfortable to move or even open his eyes.
Kakashi chuckled softly and rolled onto his other side to cradle Iruka's jaw in his palm. "Iruka, time to get up," he murmured, leaning in to brush his mouth against Iruka's. This was an incredibly nice way to wake up.
Dark eyes fluttered open sleepily and Iruka's gaze narrowed for a moment before he stretched and snuggled again. "Ohayo..." he muttered and then opened his eyes, focusing on Kakashi again. "Feel ok?" he asked softly.
"Just fine. You?" Kakashi asked softly in return, caressing Iruka's cheekbone with his thumb. He'd missed that face and those lips a lot more than he'd expected, making the surprise of waking up with him there all the more wonderful.
"Tired... You had me wor~~ried sick," Iruka answered with the word 'worried' broken by a yawn that he covered by burying his face against Kakashi himself.
"Gomen. If you're tired then go back to sleep. I won't go anywhere," Kakashi coaxed, touched by just how worried Iruka had been. He pulled Iruka close by wrapping an arm around his shoulders, nuzzling at his temple.
Satisfied that Kakashi wouldn't go anywhere, Iruka resettled his arms around the Jounin's waist and buried his face in Kakashi's chest and shoulder closest to the mattress. He was out again before Kakashi could even blink.
----------Evening----------
Iruka stirred slowly and snuggled a little more into the warmth he slept against. He was waking slowly, but felt fully rested for the first time in over a month. The scent and aura beside him made him smile and he lifted his head after a few moments to smile a little at Kakashi. "Mm... Hey..." he greeted.
"Hey yourself," Kakashi murmured with a lopsided smile, leaning in to kiss Iruka lightly. "Are you going to stay awake this time or are you going to fall asleep on me again?" he teased. He'd dozed while Iruka slept, waking up immediately when the Chuunin had begun to stir.
Iruka's mouth turned up a little at one corner and he stretched hugely. "I'm awake this time..." he mumbled around the tension of his body before it relaxed and he laid there boneless, feeling that wonderful after-stretch feeling. "I know everything was top secret... but how did it go over? Was it troublesome or a decent, long mission?"
Kakashi lifted one shoulder in a half-shrug. "It went alright. I was really sore last night from all the fighting I had to do but it's gone now. Three more missing-nin that aren't going to be causing us problems anymore." He felt wonderfully relaxed and content laying next to Iruka like this - something he hadn't experienced in much too long. "What did you do while I was gone? I noticed you skipped school today to be here," he asked teasingly, poking Iruka's nose.
"Asuma took my classes over for me. I still grade the papers, but ... my mind was elsewhere and," Iruka blushed and finished in a murmur, "The kids kept sneaking out."
Kakashi laughed and pulled Iruka closer to nuzzle his cheek. "They are never going to let you live that down... How many times did they manage to escape?"
"Three," he answered sheepishly even though he leaned into the nuzzle.
That made Kakashi laugh louder. "You never are going to live that down," he teased as he hugged Iruka closer. "What were you thinking about that had you so distracted?"
"You're awfully nosy today aren't you?" Iruka mumbled burying his face in Kakashi's shoulder as he wriggled one arm under Kakashi's body and wrapped the other over the Jounin's side, curling his arms up hooking his shoulders and holding his close and tight.
"You're avoiding the question," Kakashi countered, sounding very amused.
"What was the question again?" he asked jokingly.
Kakashi poked his side playfully. "Baka. You know what the question was."
He jumped at the finger prodding his side, but chuckled and hugged him tighter, leaning right in to whisper in his ear, still sounding a little sheepish. "I was thinking about you."
"Oh? Do tell..." Kakashi murmured with a quiet purr, rolling them so that he lay on top of Iruka. His hands glided down Iruka's chest to slip under the hem of his shirt, caressing the muscles of his torso. He began to trail light kissed along Iruka's neck. Kakashi had missed this... had dreamed about it... and was so glad that this time it wasn't a dream.
Iruka squirmed and then settled when he was comfortable. "I was worried... more than anything, that you wouldn't come back." Tanned arms wound around Kakashi's neck and he sighed as those warm lips wandered over his skin. "That you wouldn't come back for this..."
Smiling, Kakashi kissed his way up to Iruka's mouth, murmuring, "I missed you too," before kissing him deeply. He broke the kiss just long enough to pull the other man's shirt off and throw it to the floor, returning to the kiss hungrily. Warm hands roamed all over Iruka's torso, exploring and mapping.
A soft, whispery sigh escaped Iruka's lips, brought by the Jounin's gentle hands, but it was swallowed by Kakashi's hungry kisses. Reaching up with his own hand he pulled his hitai-ate off and let it fall to the floor off the edge of the bed with a "chink". He had thought long and hard about their situation while Kakashi had been gone and he'd come to a very sensible conclusion. Life was short - especially for ninja like themselves - and they'd both been alone for far too long in their lives to miss an opportunity like the one they could give each other because of fear.
Encouraged by Iruka's responsiveness and lack of resistance, Kakashi deepened the kiss with a hungry growl. One of his hands found its way into Iruka's hair, freeing it from the tie before running through it and making it fan out on the pillow. His other hand slipped a finger into the waistband of the Chuunin's pants, caressing the sensitive strip of skin. When they had to break apart for air, Kakashi whispered huskily into Iruka's ear, "Let me make love to you... Iruka... please..." He wanted so badly to claim the handsome, life-rich body beneath him.
Iruka's arms tightened around Kakashi's neck and shoulders, holding him snuggly as he murmured warmly back, "Love me... please, Kakashi. I want you." He'd never spoken truer words in his entire life.
Not needing any more encouragement Kakashi kissed him again, even hungrier this time, after whispering, "Thank you." His fingers hooked on the waistband of Iruka's pants and pulled them down along with his boxers. He lifted himself for a moment to kick his own boxers off before laying back down on the other man, rubbing his quickly growing erection into Iruka's groin. He moaned into the kiss as pleasure washed through him, making him rub faster as he sought to bring Iruka to arousal with him.
It didn't take much. Iruka's frustration had built while Kakashi had been absent. The little taste he'd gotten had addicted him so easily he had almost been frightened at first, but now, all he wanted was to be with Kakashi. Moaning, he arched into Kakashi's body rubbing his quickly hardening member against the Jounin's body. He was painfully hard far faster than he'd even been in his entire life, Kakashi's scent, his heat, his voice and the anticipation of what was to come all raising his lust to heights he'd never known he was capable of reaching. And the whole time, his mouth returned every kiss with equal passion.
Kakashi groped blindly in the drawer of his nightstand, breaking the kiss when he pulled out a small tube of clear gel. He coated two of his fingers in the slippery gel and began to tease Iruka's neck with his mouth as he circled Iruka's entrance, gently coaxing the ring of muscle to relax and open. Slowly, he pushed one finger in, flexing it slightly to stretch the opening. "You okay?" he breathed between nibbles. He didn't want to hurt Iruka or cause him too much discomfort.
"Fine..." Iruka gasped and squirmed a little at the new sensations everything Kakashi was doing to him brought him. "Don't stop... please..." he whispered and let his hands wander over whatever part of Kakashi they could reach.
Moaning and shivering at the feel of Iruka's hands on him, Kakashi kissed his way down to Iruka's chest. As he pulled his finger out of the other man's body only to push two fingers in he took one of Iruka's nipples into his mouth, sucking and biting at it to keep Iruka distracted from the strangeness of being stretched. Gently he scissored his fingers, readying Iruka for the penetration of something much bigger than two fingers.
Iruka moaned, barely noticing the strangeness of the stretching around all of the other sensations Kakashi was drugging his body with. He writhed a little and arched up into Kakashi's mouth. "God... yes, Kakashi... please... more..." he murmured in a soft voice that sounded a little lost, a little overwhelmed, and seemed to be enjoying every minute of it.
His erection throbbing in impatience, Kakashi scissored his fingers for only a little bit longer before pulling his fingers out of Iruka. Quickly he coated his arousal thickly with lubricant. "This may hurt," he whispered cautiously in Iruka's ear as he took firm hold of the other man's hips, bumping his entrance with the tip of his arousal. "Are you sure you want this?" His whole body was thrumming with desire to take Iruka, but he had to make sure Iruka really wanted this. He didn't want their friendship to be ruined over this.
His legs lifted and wrapped themselves around Kakashi's waist then and he took the Jounin's face between both palms. He was a little shaky, never having experienced much of this before in his life, but he was firm and confident and he pulled Kakashi's mouth down close to his. "Please don't make me wait any longer, Kakashi..." he murmured softly.
"Iruka..." Kakashi whispered huskily, capturing his lips in a deep kiss as he began to slowly push in. His whole being was screaming at him to plunge in with one swift thrust, but his mind knew that would have been horribly painful and cruel to Iruka. After what seemed like an eternity, he was buried in Iruka's burning, vice-like grip and he had to break the kiss to gasp from intense pleasure. "Oh, god... Iruka..." he panted, resting his forehead against the other man's as he resisted the urge to immediately begin pounding in favor of giving Iruka time to adjust.
Panting, sweaty, and filled to the point of overflowing with Kakashi's body and a strong, deep love for the man above and in him, Iruka gasped a little while lifting his hips. His eyes, which had been searching Kakashi's pleasure twisted features, slid closed and he moaned. "Feels good..." he murmured softly and let his hands clutch at the back of Kakashi's shoulders.
Kakashi moaned when Iruka lifted his hips and he answered the movement by pulling out a tiny bit before rocking back in. Gradually, he increased the pace and depth, taking his cues from the beautiful sounds coming from the Chuunin below him. One of his hands found his way into sweat-lank chocolate hair, fingers tangling in it and holding Iruka's head in place as Kakashi murmured nonsense in his ear, unable to form a coherent thought with his brain so saturated with pleasure. He felt as if he was going mad. His whole body shivered as lightning danced over his skin, radiating out from between his legs. His other hand curled around Iruka's erection and began to pump in time with his thrusts.
The dual sensations of being stroked inside and out made his whole body tingle and flex. Gradually, he learned the rhythm and caught the pace, meeting Kakashi thrust for thrust as his first-time awkwardness melted away almost in an instant. Strong, capable hands kneaded the lithe but heavy muscles of Kakashi's back and shoulders as he whimpered in soft response to something Kakashi mumbled to him. Everything was so perfect... he never wanted this moment to end. Ever.
Groaning Iruka's name as he sank even deeper into a sea of pleasure, dragged down by the hands kneading his flesh, Kakashi nibbled on Iruka's earlobe. For a change of pace he interspaced his gentle, relatively slow thrusts with deep, fast ones randomly. As he did so he increased both the pace and pressure of the hand on Iruka's erection, teasing the weeping slit with his thumb on the upstrokes. The hand in Iruka's hair made its way down to his chest to roll a nipple between thumb and forefinger.
The fog of pleasure was everywhere, in his every pore and it made him feel so wonderful that he felt he'd never be the same again. Kakashi was becoming a part of him and that made him moan every bit as much as those marvelous hands, clever fingers and the feeling of being possessed and of possessing another human being entirely.
Kakashi could see the fall coming, but he didn't want to go over alone. He wanted Iruka to cum with him, wanted to feel that infinitely amazing sensation of orgasming at the same time as his lover. "Cum for me, Iruka..." Kakashi crooned as he hovered at the edge, his hot breath teasing the shell of Iruka's ear, before lifting his head so that he could see the other man's expression and to help him over, the Jounin thrust in as deep as he could and tightened his hand, pumping up hard.
That brought more than the desired result. Iruka screamed, something that sounded like Kakashi's name, and his body arched off the mattress even as his legs seized tightly around Kakashi's hips. His cum spurted hard between their bodies over Kakashi's milking hand and he trembled fiercely with the force of his release as his body clenched around Kakashi's throbbing arousal buried deeply inside him.
A loud, shuddering groan of Iruka's name tore its way out of Kakashi's chest as he came with the other man, the clenching of Iruka's body around his erection pulling him over the edge and making his back arch. He hovered over Iruka for a moment before his body went limp and he collapsed, panting heavily. Ecstasy-weak arms made their way underneath Iruka to hold him close as Kakashi rested his head on the other man's shoulder. He almost felt as if he'd been reborn and his mind was spinning from the incredible pleasure he'd just experienced.
Iruka's arms circled Kakashi's shoulders and held him close nuzzling the side of his head tiredly. "I think... I'm falling in love with you..." he whispered softly, sounding almost a little teary. It wasn't that that was a bad thing so much as that he felt so absolutely... happy.
Kakashi smiled and lifted his head just enough that he could meet Iruka's gaze once his breathing had begun to even out again. "You're not the only one falling in love," he whispered back before he kissed Iruka sweetly, tightening his embrace as he did so. This was heaven...
Letting his fingers tangle in the Jounin's silvery hair, he kissed Kakashi back eagerly, but pulled away a little bit after a moment. "Kakashi... I... uhm... have the day off tomorrow, so... do you think... maybe," and he blushed profusely but forged on ahead anyway and asked, "We could spend the day together... just you and me?"
Smiling happily Kakashi dropped light kisses across Iruka's scar, where the blush was most prominent. "Of course. ...As long as you feed me," he added teasingly. He hadn't gotten anything to eat since the night before and knew his stomach would start complaining soon, especially after
such an energy-consuming activity.
"How about I cook for you, instead?" Iruka offered and caressed Kakashi's lower lip with his middle fingertip, taking in the beautiful sight of his lover's face.
"Ordering in, cooking, doesn't matter to me as long as it's food," Kakashi said, kissing Iruka's fingertip. Smirking wickedly he leaned forward and nuzzled Iruka's ear. "Of course... food could also mean you..." he purred, rolling his hips gently.
A soft gasp escaped Iruka's slightly parted lips and his eyelids fluttered as that roll of Kakashi's hips sent a shiver through his entire body. "Mm... it could... but you need to eat some real food first... to keep up your strength. I know you haven't eaten since what... yesterday?"
Just then Kakashi's stomach decided to make itself known with a loud roar, answering Iruka's question rather effectively. Surprised, Kakashi looked down at it. "O...kay..."
A soft and amused chuckle slipped past Iruka's lips. "Kiss me... and then I'll go make you a big breakfast while you shower... or nap... whichever you'd like... ne?"
"Or we could shower together, and then you cook while I start on the laundry," Kakashi suggested, leering playfully with a wicked smirk.
"Shower... together...?" Iruka grinned and reached up to lap at Kakashi's lower lip before taking it between his teeth in a quick nip. "I think I like the sound of that..." he murmured, turning the words into a kiss.
Kakashi kissed deeply until his stomach roared again, at which point he reluctantly withdrew from Iruka and led him to the bathroom for as long a shower as his stomach would let them have. Maybe, if he was lucky, he'd get his dessert before breakfast.
