Differences - Chapter 9: Rock the Boat
"Hinata, I have no involvement in your relationship with Uzumaki. Nor am I responsible for the failed murder attempt." Neji's cool voice sounded in Hinata's ears.
Together they sat across from Hiashi's desk discussing the men that attacked Hinata and Naruto and the investigation of the matter.
Hinata began to speak, but Neji cut her off, determined to state his innocence. "While I disapprove of your relationship with Uzumaki because of his audacious nature, it would be unwise for me to eliminate him. Uzumaki is a loyal client and the Hyugas have profited greatly from his services over the years. To eradicate Uzumaki would prove a great disservice to the Hyuga family. I'd have a valuable asset to lose."
Neji's face wasn't scrunched in emotion, he appeared unperturbed from the callousness of his statement; the hubristic brunet examining his impeccable manicure was a dead giveaway. And that bothered Hinata. Her cousin basically admitted he didn't want her boyfriend dead because Naruto makes the family a lot of money. And while Hinata disliked his proclamation, she could at least rest assured Neji wasn't after Naruto.
"However when I found out about your union, it crossed my mind to intercede before the relationship could fester. I didn't want Uzumaki's impudence to negatively impede the Hyugas in any way. He's hyperactive and unpredictable, and those traits could prove damaging to our empire." Neji droned on, but all Hinata heard was white noise from her cousin. She began to tune him out as she too, mimicked his earlier motions and examined the chipped lavender polish from her nails.
"I became worried your involvement with Uzumaki would possibly expose our underground trade. But I wasn't thinking sagaciously. While I don't like the way he handles things, if the Hyugas are exposed, then Uzumaki would also be exposed. Although he's puerile and ludicrous most times, even I'll admit Uzumaki's too astute to allow his surreptitious activities to become public. So I left the matter alone."
That got Hinata's attention! Pursing her lips in a fine line, the brunette cut her eyes at her cousin. He comfortably sat in the chair next to her ankles crossed, with all the narcissistic, aristocratic flair of a millionaire snob. She inventoried his appearance and frowned at his expensive, charcoal-gray, wool 3-piece suit and overpriced black leather loafers. A black silk tie was secured around his neck, and he let his brown, shoulder-length hair hang freely. His white eyes were hard and penetrating as he looked at her.
Hinata rolled her eyes and faced her father, ignoring Neji. She loved him like a brother and he'll always hold a special place in her heart. Aside from Hiashi, it was Neji who also assisted her in honing her skills to inherit the Hyuga business. They formed a bond during their training sessions and spending those days with him were forever ingrained in her memory. And if it wasn't for Neji discovering her unconscious, marinated in her own blood from the botched abortion, she probably would've died. So in a sense, she owed her life to her cousin.
Nevertheless, at this moment, Hinata wished Neji would just shut up. Just because they grew up together doesn't mean he had control over her life and who she decides to allow in it.
"He has a first name, y'know?" Hinata addressed Neji using her boyfriend's quirky one-liner.
Sensing his daughter's rising anger, Hiashi intervened. "That's enough, Neji. I'm sure Hinata understands we're not the culprits behind the murder attempt."
"Yes, Father." Hinata nodded in assurance.
"And while I'm not particularly fond of Naruto myself, so far he's been good to Hinata. And it's as Neji mentioned, Naruto is also a favored client for the family business."
The brunette was tempted to roll her eyes again but knew better when her father was speaking.
"And," Hiashi faced his daughter and gave her a gentle smile. "I trust Hinata's judgment. She wouldn't choose a mate who'd jeopardize the family or her and Hanabi's safety. I'm not privy to the intricacies of your relationship with Naruto, Hinata, but I like the change he's kindled in you. You have my blessing to be with him."
Hinata tried to control the blush she felt warming her cheeks. She tried to keep her lips in a straight line as they threatened to curve upwards in a smile.
She failed to do both.
Her body temperature rose, causing her face to heat dramatically as she felt herself turning bright red. The smile she tried to fruitlessly conceal was shown on full display. Her lips curved and she couldn't stop herself from showing off her pearly whites as she basked at Hiashi's approval of Naruto and her trust in him and their relationship.
Playing with the fabric of her skirt in an attempt to keep calm, Hinata nodded in her father's direction. "Thank you, Father."
He nodded back and began to speak some more about their current situation. "So it's our responsibility to discover who's behind the current goings-on involving my daughter." Directly facing his nephew Hiashi told him, "I'm leaving you in charge of the investigation, Neji."
"I understand, sir," Neji spoke.
Clearing his throat, Hiashi continued. "I myself will be in charge of security. I've already discussed the plans of security with the both of you."
Hinata and Neji nodded their confirmation.
"And Hinata, nothing changes on your end. Just keep doing what you've been doing. Continue to keep watch over yourself and Hanabi. And keep an eye out for any suspicious activity involving Naruto. In order to solve this dilemma, we all have to work together. Understand?"
"Yes sir," the young Hyugas acknowledged simultaneously.
"Great. This meeting has officially ceased." Hiashi stood and that also prompted Hinata and Neji to rise from their seats. Turning to Hinata he said, "Hinata you may leave. Neji," he faced the young man. "I need you to follow me."
Without another word, the three Hyugas went their separate ways. As Neji followed Hiashi out of his home office, he couldn't obliterate the unnerving feeling festering in his gut. Something just wasn't right, and it was disconcerting not knowing what it was.
Hinata lay on a beach chair reading an eBook on her tablet. She wore lime green string bikini bottoms with yellow, white and pink polka dots printed on them and nothing else. Dating Naruto for the past three months instilled a confidence in her she never thought she'd possess. She was completely comfortable lying on the beach chair topless exposing her breasts and marred belly, soaking the heat of the setting sun disappearing along the horizon.
They finally decided to take their weekend vacation Naruto suggested. At Naruto's recommendation, they sailed the sea on his yacht during the final weekend of the summer. The luxury boat was anchored and together the couple basked in the stillness of the waters and the tranquility of the atmosphere. The warm, salty sea air whipped through her shoulder-length bob and a blissful sigh escaped her lips. It was a short while ago Hinata decided to cut her hair; foregoing her heavy, waist-length tresses for something sleek and practical. It was another way to flaunt her newfound confidence. She smiled graciously when Naruto complimented her hair, telling her how much he loved the new look.
She glanced at her right and calmly watched as Naruto leaned forward in his beach chair, blond brows creased in a concentrated frown as he typed away furiously on his laptop. He was busy writing documents to submit for his upcoming third Ichiraku restaurant. Her lips curled upwards and she had to bite her lower lip to suffocate the giggles that nearly emerged.
Hinata humorously pursed her lips in a smile as she looked at her boyfriend's choice of vacation attire.
Naruto wore a tangerine-colored, polyester Hawaiian button-down shirt with red and white floral patterns. The shirt was open, exposing a white cotton tank underneath. Dark green cargo swim trunks rested on his hips, and unflattering black flip-flops covered his feet.
Stifling a few giggles behind her tablet, Hinata found it adorably cute that the love of her life had horrible fashion sense. Although, she looked down at her own tacky bikini bottoms and her smile widened, who was she to judge?
Reaching for the candy bowl that rested on a small table between their beach chairs, Hinata popped an atomic cinnamon fireball in her mouth and continued to read her eBook. Her ears perked when Naruto's voice filled the air.
"Still eating those disgusting things, huh Cin?"
Laughing at her boyfriend's comment, Hinata replied, "You sound exactly like Ino. And they're not disgusting. They're delicious." She reminded him just like she reminded her best friend.
"Hmph." Naruto's blue eyes never wavered from his laptop screen as he kept typing away at his keyboard, even though a playful grin stretched his lips.
Setting down her tablet, Hinata stood and lay next to Naruto on his beach chair. After saving his work, Naruto folded his laptop and placed it on the deck next to his beach chair. He adjusted his sitting position to make room for his girlfriend, circling an arm around her shoulders.
Resting her head on his shoulder, Hinata's eyes took in the sight of the setting sun, the red-orange reflections in the dark water, and released a happy sigh. She wrapped her arms around her boyfriend and whispered, "You were right, Naruto. We needed this small vacation. It feels nice to get away from everything. From everyone," she admitted honestly, especially after everything that transpired in a short amount of time. "I'm so happy right now; happier than I've ever been in a long time."
Naruto lightly kissed Hinata's forehead and turned to enjoy the view of the sun disappearing past the sea. He linked their fingers, stroking his calloused thumb along her smooth knuckles before lifting her hand to gently press his lips against them. He closed his eyes and released their hands to caress along the smoothness of her thigh.
Remaining quiet, Naruto shifted their bodies until Hinata was underneath him and his head was buried in between her breasts. Licking and kissing the space between the swollen hills of her flesh, his ears perked and his eyes shot open when he heard her breathy words fill his ears.
"I love you so much, Naruto."
Lifting his head from her chest, the blond eyed his girlfriend, giving her a bewildered look. His brows rose past his hairline and a goofy grin curved his lips. Blue eyes sparkling with mischief, Naruto decided to toy with his girlfriend for a bit.
"Do you realize what you just said, Hinata?"
Crinkling her brows in confusion, Hinata's lips curled downward. She nibbled her lower lip as her mind tried to recapitulate the words she previously spoke. When realization dawned on her, her cheeks instantly turned pink and her lavender eyes widened in disbelief. Thickly swallowing while ignoring the beads of sweat that dotted behind her bang and along her forehead, she tried to explain herself.
"Um… what I meant to say was… Um… that is… I-I… um…" Mentally cursing herself as her childhood stammer surfaced, Hinata balled her fists to keep from twiddling her fingers as a way to substitute her nervousness. "I… I… Naruto…?"
"You said you love me, Cin." Naruto's playful grin spread into a Cheshire cat, malevolent smirk. His baby blues instantly darkened to almost-black as desire and lust consumed him. His gaze became predatory; the way his jaw hardened and Adam's apple bobbed ceaselessly, made Hinata gulp as a shiver of fear mixed with anticipation traveled down her spine. Her skin prickled with gooseflesh, causing her nipples to stiffen. She desperately tried to move backward in the beach chair to distance the two of them, but it was futile. Naruto clutched her shoulders to keep her still.
"Do you?" He asked her, his voice stoic and nonchalant, completely opposite of his ravenous countenance.
Lifting her chin and blinking to sharpen her focus, the brunette fought against her anxiety and the racing of her palpitating heart to reply to her boyfriend. "Are you upset with me?" Hinata answered Naruto's question with one of her own.
Relaxing the muscles in his face, Naruto pondered Hinata's question briefly before responding with a simple lift of his brow. "Do I have a reason to be?"
Reaching a tentative hand forward, Hinata smoothed the flyaways strands of Naruto's hair that was gently blowing in the sea breeze. Her palm traveled downward, massaging a whiskered cheek before cupping his jaw. Giving him a soft smile while looking into his eyes, she bravely repeated her words, no longer apprehensive of her feelings for the restaurateur. "I said, I love you so much. Naruto."
Naruto's playful smirk returned full-force. His lids hovered over his eyes and he leaned forward, touching his forehead against hers.
Trailing soft kisses along Hinata's jaw to her earlobe, Naruto lowered his voice and husked in his girlfriend's ear. "That's what I thought you said." Nibbling on the pliant flesh of her lobe, he continued. "Now why don't I show you how I feel."
"Eeep!"
Hinata's shrill cry sounded in the air as Naruto quickly stood, picked her up and cradled her in his arms bridal style. "Naruto!" She playfully slapped his arm.
"Hee, hee," Naruto chuckled shamelessly as he carried her to the entrance of the yacht's cabin. He paused in his steps and thought better of it, deciding to carry the brunette to the yacht's railing instead.
Setting Hinata on the railing facing away from the setting sun, Naruto knelt in front her and kissed his way down from her torso, over her marred belly, to the side of her hip. His lips continued to travel their downward journey until they touched the soft strands of Hinata's string bikini bottoms.
Her skin quivered with each touch of the blond's lips to her skin, causing Hinata's toes to stretch and curl from his kisses. She looked down and softly smiled at her lover, releasing one of her hands from the railing to gently rake her freshly-painted nails along his scalp.
The brunette felt Naruto teeth tug at the knot on one side of her bikini briefs loose until the strings fell from her side. Hinata giggled, releasing soft, cute chuckles when she felt her boyfriend's nose nudging the bikini briefs aside; the action tickling her upper thigh.
Finding his destination, Naruto's nostrils flared when he inhaled the delicious aroma of Hinata's arousal. Her briefs were already dampened with her sweet nectar, and her humid, moist heat warmed his face.
Licking his lips in excitement, Naruto extended his tongue, outstretching the tip past Hinata's soft, dark curls to flick against her engorged clit.
"If you don't wanna fall, you better hold on tight to the rail," Naruto warned Hinata. She wisely acquiesced his warning right before he devoured his evening snack.
"It's 4:23 in the morning and we here at KTV News are live downtown. Several moments ago many calls were received by 911 operators alerting them of a burning warehouse." Moegi looked directly into the camera as she spoke into her microphone, informing the citizens of Konoha of the recent crime committed.
She briefly looked over her shoulder as the firemen behind her doused the last remaining flames of the abandoned warehouse as smoke and steam rose in the dark, early morning sky. The camera showed several police cars, ambulance trucks, and fire trucks surrounding the building flashing red, white and blue lights, brightening the area. Moegi continued delivering the news without a hitch as she faced the camera again. "Behind me, you see firemen and policemen hard at work getting the situation quickly taken care of. We were informed firemen discovered copious amounts of cocaine, heroin, marijuana and ecstasy pills hidden underneath the warehouse stashed in various crates and boxes worth several million on the black market. Six unidentified men were also discovered dead on the scene succumbed to bullet wounds. Their bodies drastically charred, making it impossible for authorities learn of their identities.
"As of right now, the police are uncertain if the arson and murders are somehow related to the drugs discovered in the building, or if the fire was set coincidentally. At the moment there are no leads." Moegi and the cameraman faced Sasuke Uchiha, wanting to receive more information about the goings-on of the fire and drugs.
"And here's our city's police chief, Sasuke Uchiha. Chief Uchiha? Are you able to give us more details about what happened tonight? Has your team learned of any possible motives behind the warehouse's incineration, illegal drugs and the men who died?" She angled the microphone under Sasuke's chin and patiently waited for him to answer her questions.
Looking directly into the camera, Sasuke informed the public, "As Konoha's chief of police it is my sworn duty to protect this city at all costs. I am determined to find who committed this heinous act of arson and bring them to justice. Along with the miscreants who housed the contraband in that abandoned warehouse. I assure the citizens of this city my team and I will not rest until all parties involved are facing the hand of the law. That is all." He quickly turned and walked away from Mogei and her cameraman before she could further inquire about what happened.
"And you all heard it here first, live from KTV, I'm Moegi and I'm signing off."
Sakura rested her back against her headboard with a pillow wedged in between her back and the wood. She couldn't sleep as another night of pregnancy pains wouldn't allow her proper rest. To take her mind off her energetic growing daughter, she decided to kill time by watching television.
What she saw on the live newscast made her instinctively wrap her arms over her eight-month round belly. Her heart raced and her breath quickened. Sweat coated her skin and soaked her pajamas, but her body felt cold. She wanted to turn her eyes away from the glowing screen, she wanted to change the channel, but her jade gaze remained locked on the television as she listened to her husband make false promises Konoha's citizens.
She recognized that warehouse, and one statement was true that Sasuke said, she knew he was determined to find whoever destroyed that warehouse and make them face the hand of the law. However, only a few people knew the true meaning behind his words.
Sakura tried to choke back a sob, but her body uncontrollably shook as the hot, wet tears fell from her eyes. He's gonna get himself killed! He's gonna be so focused on revenge about that stupid warehouse, he's not gonna think straight! I don't wanna be a widow. I don't want our baby to grow up without a father… The moment her mental tirade focused on their unborn baby, she felt an excruciating pain overwhelm her.
"AAAHHHH!"
She tried to rock back and forth as best as she could to alleviate the discomfort, but her efforts were useless. Then it happened: wetness. She felt herself sitting in a puddle of her amniotic fluid.
"Oh my God," her green eyes settled on the massive wet stain in her lap. "My water just broke." Those were the last words Sakura whispered before everything went black.
The loud ringing of his smartphone caused Naruto to jolt upright from his bed. He immediately looked down to make sure Hinata was still sound asleep. A smile curled his lips when she turned on her side and snuggled into his pillow but otherwise did not wake.
Grabbing his phone from the nightstand, Naruto's brows creased in worry when he noticed Sasuke's incoming voice call.
Quickly slipping on a robe he exited his cabin and closed the door so he wouldn't disturb his girlfriend.
Allowing the glow of the phone to illuminate the corridor, Naruto pressed his thumb against the phone's screen to receive the call. He didn't have time to question why Sasuke was calling so early in the morning before his best friend's voice filled the air.
"You need to cut your vacation short and get back here. Now!" Sasuke disconnected the call before Naruto could reply. His stomach fell to his knees as a heavy feeling of dread cloaked over him like a thick curtain. Whatever's going on in the city couldn't be good. So many questions ran through the restauranter's mind, but the question that stuck out the most was: whatever that's going on, how would this affect him and Hinata?
A pair of violet eyes keenly watched as the camera men and news crews began to gradually distance themselves from the scene of the crime. He patiently waited some more as forensics teams, policemen, and fire crews continuously distracted themselves before approaching his superior.
Tucking a few stiff stands of his platinum-blond hair behind his ear he asked Sasuke, "So, what are ya gonna do?"
Sasuke's eyed his inspector and surveyed the grounds until he made eye contact with his other two comrades. A tall gentleman with dirty blond hair, and a scarlet-haired woman with glasses. He nodded in their direction and walked a distance away from the scene, silently telling his team to follow him.
Once the three caught up with the police chief, they silently waited for him to speak his thoughts about the early morning events. Although the platinum-haired man was tempted to demand answers from his superior.
"Listen. I know who's behind this attack." Sasuke lowered his voice while keeping one eye on his crew and the other on the groups of people. One could never be too sure of prying eyes and ears.
The woman's eyes rose along her forehead, surprised at what her boss admitted. "You do? Who did it?"
Sucking his teeth in annoyance, the violet-eyed man rolled his eyes at his partner and said, "Y'know, Karin, Sasuke's jus' about to tell us before you ran your big trap. Keep it shut why don'cha?"
"Suigestsu…" Karin clenched and unclenched her fists at her sides to keep from punching him. She knew better because doing that would only draw unwanted attention to them and upset Sasuke. And she wasn't in the mood to be on the receiving end of his temper.
"So you already have a lead?" The question came from the tall blond, to which Sasuke nodded in his direction.
"Yes, Jugo. I know exactly who did this to our warehouse." His dark eyes narrowed as the last the embers were doused by the firemen. All that remained of the warehouse was charred bricks and scorched steel beams. His anger rose as he watched policemen and forensics crews carry out the destroyed contraband, now worthless on the black market. Millions of ryo-worth of their product, gone. Sasuke knew the culprit's identity and he was determined to make the bastard pay with their life, by his hands!
Focusing on his team again, Sasuke told them, "Listen carefully because I'm only going to say this once. Karin," all of his attention was directed to the only woman in their group. "I need to you get blueprints of the Hyuga Manor. I need detailed schematics of the layout of the property. I also need information about the manor's security system. You'll be in charge of hacking into it."
Giving her superior a curt nod in understanding, she assured him simply, "Got it."
Facing the two men in his group, Sasuke told them, "Suigetsu. Jugo. You two are with me. I'm going to need extra muscle and backup in order to execute this plan fluidly."
"What's going down?" Suigetsu asked with a casual shrug of his shoulder.
Making sure he had this team's undivided attention, Sasuke lowered his voice by more decibels and murmured, "In two week's time we're going to murder Hiashi Hyuga."
Because it's so clichéd for the man to admit his feelings first! (lol) Next chapter, Team Taka makes their move!
June 18, 2018: Shocking, isn't it? I know I stated this story was discontinued. And at the time I earnestly meant that. It's no secret that I had a major falling out with the NH fandom years ago. And truthfully it negatively affected me. I was having anxiety attacks, suffered from depression, had to deal with harassment, death threats, lies and rumors spread about me all over the internet, slut-shaming, and the list goes on. I became bitter and resented all things NH and the entire fandom. So much so, I wanted absolutely nothing to do with anything NH-related.
But to make a long story short something told me to re-read this story again. And I did on my AO3 account yesterday. I became enamored with the plot, the characters, the twists, and actions. It felt like I was reading the work written by another author. And I anticipated the ending.
That's when I decided to see this story to fruition. I still have my notebook that contains all of my notes for Differences. So the ending is pretty much written, I just have to type it out, revise, and edit it.
