Chapter 9
Once the ninja were gone Iruka went inside and bathed. He ate dinner in his pajamas and went to sleep. He needed to get as much rest as possible between now and the evening. He had a Copy-Nin to save.Pakkun raced through the tunnel he and Bisuke had escaped from a few weeks earlier. It hurt to keep going when he heard Kakashi call his name and felt the flare of energy that followed. Even as he moved away he smelled the woman on both sides of the room and the way her scent hung in the air. It was a genjutsu. Kakashi didn’t use the last of his chakra to call him back. He’d been with the man long enough to know it was to buy him time. The tiny dog ran wishing he had long legs like Uuhei or a large body like Bull or sharper teeth like Shiba; all he had were short stubby legs, a quick mind, and a nose that could distinguish which pigeon shat on which statue so he continued to run knowing his master’s life depended on him. He stopped at the edge of the drainage tunnel. The enemy was outside waiting for him. He was about to summon the others when he heard yelling. It was the woman who’d hurt his master, “Run you sorry excuses for ninja. Even those civilians in bad uniforms with flashlights wouldn’t be so stupid as to leave a captive unattended. I broke a nail subduing him. Keep running until I get tired. Half of you in the trees using chakra, the other half on the ground without when you come back to this point switch.” Pakkun watched as the ninja ran around him. The ones in the trees moved faster than the ones on the ground. If he was patient he’d be able to get the timing. His nose twitched catching a faint but familiar scent. It was equally dispersed among all of them. He could follow their scent to the reinforcements. He waited until the sound of footfalls and their strange odor were the farthest and scampered into the forest.
Iruka woke at 9:00PM. He sealed the bathroom then took another bath and washed his hair using unscented cleansers. He lifted the lid on the toilet and removed the reverse summoning scroll hidden in the blue gelatinous toilet cleaner. He made a clone and instructed it to hide the scroll once he was gone then take a chakra pill and get back in the bed. The clone nodded as his maker smeared blood on the scroll and disappeared. Iruka hated intruding on the realm of his summons, but it was necessary. He’d placed scent camouflage all over the cabin and needed to go somewhere so the heavy aroma wouldn’t cling to him or his clothing. He knew most ninja were comfortable in their familiars dimensions, even Anko had certain snakes she’d visit, but the spiders weren’t that social. He had to watch his movements otherwise he could kill one or some of the children. This one, well this one was a different story all together. He summoned his pack and got dressed while the creature watched him. He donned a black wetsuit beneath the white fatigues and strapped anesthetic laced weapons everywhere he could put them. He placed the other items he would need inside the wetsuit. “What do you have for me Iruka-kun?” the monstrous entity asked him. “Ninja. I’ll leave one of your nails where I’m going. You can choose your own target or feast on all of them,” Iruka replied making the seals for teleportation. He paused before making the last finger movement. “The purple-eyed one, if you choose her, I’d like to know what she’s dreaming.” The creature smiled and nodded as his contractor left his domain.
Iruka checked the chakra bundles the moment he arrived in Giha. So far there had been no activity, but he could allow himself to fail by being careless. He moved down the tunnel that would take him north to Cobweb Forest, sacrificing speed for safety as the tunnel began to ascend. He paused to check for signs of overhead movement before pushing the trap door open. He jumped backwards; weapons drawn on high alert waiting for something to fall on him. He climbed upward hearing the unmistakable chatter of angry squirrels as he closed the entryway and took in his surroundings. The tunnel ended in a large hollowed out tree in plain view of the fortress.
Pakkun sniffed. He raised his head to smell the air and lowered it to check the snow. He’d been running for hours and was still in the same area of the forest. He could smell the Konoha ninja but it was buried in the odor of Cloud and Snow ninja along with smoke, tar and cleansers. His despair grew with every step and frantic whiff - someone had scent bombed the forest. He could still see the fortress but the ninja were no longer circling. He turned in a different direction when the wind shifted. The breeze carried something foreign yet familiar. He was chasing that scent when a hand caught him by the scruff and another wrapped around his muzzle. “Shhh. I’m not going to hurt you. I’m from Konoha” Iruka whispered keeping a firm grip on the dog’s snout as he maneuvered them so his hiate-ate was visible. “You’re one of Kakashi’s aren’t you?” The dog nodded. “I’m here to rescue him. He’s in that fortress isn’t he?” Iruka asked freeing the ninken. The dog nodded and sneezed, “Did you do this to the forest?” The man’s eyes crinkled. The dog could easily tell he was smiling after so many years of dealing with Kakashi. “I did.” Pakkun sneezed again and gave the man a quick assessment. He was dressed entirely in varying shades of white: white hat, white mask and white gloves. He had white coverings over his shoes and white make-up on his face. He’d buried his scent in smoke and incense and somehow spread it all over the forest. The enemy ninja even reeked of the same pungent fragrance. Even his voice was muffled. Pakkun wouldn’t be able to identify him if he promised two barnyard’s worth of steaks and sausages. Content the ninja was competent he explained where Kakashi was being held and the condition in which he left him. The man nodded but Pakkun was unable to read his expression. If the situation weren’t so dire he would have laughed at the irony. “Get some rest, Ninken-san. I’ll go fetch your master,” Iruka stated touching the small dog with a special tag a former Academy headmaster designed to disrupt the connection between a summons and his contractor. Angry children could very easily call forth an entity they were unable to control or in some cases control all too well. Iruka checked the time. The pug had told him about the punishment for leaving Kakashi unattended and how it delayed the departure of the Snow and Cloud ninja who were granted holiday leave. He also confirmed the secret entrance Iruka planned to use was intact. The chuunin was grateful he’d added a chakra pill and food pill to his canteen before he left. He took a drink and settled into a position to meditate. He had to maintain his clone for longer than he thought. After two hours the fortress gates opened. Iruka quickly clambered into the trees and made his way towards the building. Speed was his utmost priority. He’d eavesdropped long enough to know there wouldn’t be any replacements and the primary seal master was among those leaving. The wards would be dropped and she’d reconfigure them once she was outside. Anyone who was already in the building would be allowed to come and go freely; anyone who was outside, friend or enemy would not be allowed inside the building. Iruka stabbed two sentries with a hallucinogenic senbon and used a genjutsu to convince them to return to building. If they were caught outside it would also draw suspicion. He was at the final tree when light went on in the fortress. He saw the young sensor’s face at the window. She was pointing in his direction. He had hoped his chakra usage would be masked by the ones used by the Snow and Cloud ninja to hide their troop movements. He bit his finger and rubbed it against the palm of his hand. “Iruka, twice in one day; how unusual,” the summon commented as it appeared as a tiny apparition beside him. He didn’t waste time with pleasantries, “Bedroom, light in the window. Young girl, early teens. Personality a mixture of Ino, and Naruto; eager to please – Go” “My sensei, I’m honored. You rarely let me play with the good little girls,” the summon cackled as he faded away. Iruka continued moving stabbing another ninja and using him as a distraction. He convinced him to return to the fortress and go check on Arisa; and tell her he saw her turn on the light and point in his direction. A few short feet later Iruka was inside the fortress.
