This chapter was rather interesting to write as the plot decided to reel out of control. I respond to reviews here: http://xiophelia.livejournal.com/
~~~~ Naruto shot out of bed swearing. He had fallen asleep while waiting for Konohamaru to come home. When the blond finally blinked the sleep out of his eyes, he realized that he was indeed in his room, so that meant that he had let his godson into the apartment last night. And it also meant he needed to get the kid ready for school. Itachi had explained that he didn’t have to be in until at least ten that was a relief in itself. He swung his legs out of his bed as he glanced at his clock. It was only half past seven, which meant Konohamaru could easily catch the bus and the blond didn’t have to drive across town. Naruto was glad about that. The less he had to drive in the mess of Konoha, the better off he was. Traffic was horrendous even on a dull day and it was near impossible to get to work in less than thirty minutes. Naruto found a pair of shorts on his floor and pulled them on. He didn’t want to scar Konohamaru by wearing only his underwear. He left his room and froze when he saw Konohamaru sitting on the couch. The kid was never awake this early on a school day. Naruto normally had to drag him out of bed and throw him into the bathroom. The blond entered the living room and plopped down beside Konohamaru. “So, why are you up so early?” Konohamaru shrugged. The kid didn’t even acknowledge his godfathers presence. Naruto didn’t like that the brunet brushed him off so easily. It meant that Konohamaru either had a nightmare or something was bothering him. The blond really hoped that he had not had a nightmare. Naruto didn’t do well with comforting Konohamaru after a bad dream. “What’s wrong kid?” Naruto asked softly. The last thing he wanted to do was set the kid off. “I…I got expelled from school for a week.” Konohamaru’s voice was so low that Naruto almost didn’t catch the sentence. “What do you mean?” Konohamaru let out a long sigh. “It’s not your problem. You’re not my real dad so it isn’t your business. ” Naruto felt a knife go through his heart. The brunet was right on one thing, he wasn’t the kid’s father. It was these moments that the blond wished Asuma was still alive. The older man was great with his son and knew how to handle Konohamaru when he was like this. But he was gone and Naruto had to step up to the plate and show the young Sarutobi that he was indeed his guardian and could very well become a second to the kid. “It is my problem Konohamaru. I’m responsible for you now and if you’re getting into trouble at school that could mean the end of my guardianship. Please, I need to know what happened.” Naruto pleaded. “It’s not your problem. I have no idea why you care. I didn’t ask for you to be my guardian! It’s so dumb. I mean why you? Of all the people they had to make my godfather, why you? There are better people out there! You helped that man murder people! Why didn’t anyone tell me?” The eight year old spat out. Naruto sighed. He should have known that Konohamaru would find out about his past sooner or later. He just hoped that he would tell the boy himself one day. “Who told you that?” “A kid at school. He said you helped a man murder people. That you would make me do the same thing and that I would follow in your footsteps. I don’t want that life!” “Konohamaru, I’ll tell you the truth. I was four years old when the man Kyuubi Uzumaki adopted me. He was nice to me and actually paid attention to me. He treated me well and I felt safe with him. We always went to the playground when the weather was nice. Those were the happiest days of my life. I had a father who loved me. I wanted a mother more than anything. So he began dating, but no one worked out. And I never saw the women again.” Naruto took a deep breath. His nerves were already on edge with narrating his past. It was something he wanted to keep away from Konohamaru. “When I was six, I was let out of school early. I couldn’t get a hold of Kyuubi to let him know I was on my home. So I arrived home and when I opened the door I could someone screaming. I was scared and was told to dial 911 in that situation. So I ran to the phone and dialed the number. Within minutes the police and ambulance were there. I almost wished I hadn’t called them.” Naruto whispered the last part. “Why?” “The police found him in the basement with a dismembered woman. They took him away in handcuffs, but before he left, he hugged me and apologized to me, claiming that he was only protecting me. That those women were evil and were trying to take his precious nephew away from him. I cried and wouldn’t let him go. He may not have been my father by blood, but he was my father in my heart and I didn’t want to see him go. I clung to him so hard that the police had a hard time separating us. When I was sent to the orphanage, I was treated like I was the one who murdered those women.” The silence that draped over the room was thick. Neither one wanted to speak first. When it was clear that Konohamaru didn’t have anything to say, Naruto stood up and stretched. “Listen, I’ll take you to the day care because I have to be in at work by ten. I’ll give a few days decide what you want to do. If you don’t want to be with me anymore, I’ll find someone else to take care of you. Please gather your homework; we’ll be leaving around nine.” Naruto disappeared into his room, leaving Konohamaru on the couch. The blond closed his door and grabbed the phone he kept in his room. He dialed his parents number, he really need Iruka’s advice right now. The phone rang a few times before it was picked up. “Naruto, its seven thirty in the morning, what in the world is wrong?” Iruka’s voice was groggy with sleep. “I’m sorry to call so early, but it’s Konohamaru. A kid in school told him about Kyuubi, and he got in a fight. He wants to leave Papa. I’m giving him a few days to decide, but what if he still wants to leave?” Naruto’s voice was broken. “Naruto, he’s young and lost his parents. He really doesn’t know how to handle things and he’s taking it out on you. You can’t bend to him. You have to assert yourself as an authority or else he will never respect you. He must still see you as a big brother. You need to stop coddling him.” “I know, it’s just things at work are getting bizarre as well.” Naruto sighed. “What do you mean?” “Well, Orochimaru Hebi, an acquaintance of Mr. Uchiha’s seems to think that I’m the son of Minato Namikaze. We’re gonna have a DNA test done today around ten. Tsunade is doing it.” Iruka was strangely silent and Naruto wondered why. He thought that maybe his father was thinking that he was pulling a joke. “Papa, I’m not lying. It’s true.” “Listen, Kakashi and I are gonna meet you at Uchiha Inc. Don’t do anything until we get there okay?” Iruka’s voice was strangely authoritative. Naruto hadn’t heard that tone since he was a kid and he pranked his sixth grade teacher. “Alright, I suppose I can do that. I just hope you explain shit.” Naruto sighed. “Language and yes. We’ll see you soon Sunshine.” With that Iruka hung up and Naruto stared blankly at the phone. That conversation brought up a lot of questions in the blonds mind. And he wasn’t sure he wanted the answer. ~`~ Naruto felt nervous as he entered the office. All eyes were on him and it seemed that whatever had been discussed before his arrival was something that had dampened the atmosphere. He nervously made his way to the only empty seat in the office, his chair. He planted his butt on it and stared at the small group before him. It seemed that Iruka and Kakashi had arrived earlier than what Naruto thought they would. “Soooo…what’s up guys?” Naruto asked, his voice breaking the heavy silence. “Naruto, this was something we never wanted you to learn. It was also your father’s last wish. He didn’t want you tied to the family.” Kakashi began and Naruto felt coldness seep into his bones. “Orochimaru is correct about your identity. You are indeed Minato Namikaze’s son and heir. But your father didn’t want you to live he had. As for your mother, she felt the same way. They were going to let us adopt you. They wanted to keep you so badly, but their situation wouldn’t allow it. Your mother was betrothed to another man and she hid the pregnancy well. No one suspected a thing until she made a mistake entrusting her secret to her cousin. He betrayed her and she had to flee.” Iruka’s voice filled the whole room and everyone present was enthralled with the story. “We were to meet her at Konoha Park. But she never showed up, we were so worried so we tried to find that night, but we couldn’t find anything. Then Minato called us a few days later to tell us that he had a son, but couldn’t find your mother at the hospital. We searched for days and couldn’t find a trace of her. Her brother felt so guilty about not being able to protect her that he disappeared as well. Then a few weeks later, Minato’s body was found in his home. He was murdered.” The brunet had to stop his tale for a few moments. Naruto could tell that this was hard on his Papa. But the blond wouldn’t interrupt him. He needed to hear this story. “We never knew what happened to her. But when we heard of Kyuubi’s arrest and that he had adopted a kid we had to check you out. And we were shocked. You were the splitting image of your father. We used a few favors to adopt immediately and they were worth it. We never knew that Kyuubi was that mentally unstable that he would resort to murder.” The silence was even thicker after the story. It seemed as if no one wanted to break it. It may have been due to the fact that no one knew what to say. Naruto was slowly absorbing everything into his brain. The pervert was somewhat right on who he was. While he may not have been Minato, he certainly carried the other man’s DNA. And for the first time in years, Naruto felt that familiar love for Kyuubi surface. “He was trying to protect me.” The blond whispered softly. Every head in the room snapped to attention at the sentence. And when Naruto looked at everyone, they had looks on their faces that demanded an explanation. “When the police were taking him away, Kyuubi told me that the women were after me, his only nephew. That he was only protecting me from them. I never understood what he meant. Is it possible that he was telling the truth?” Naruto asked. Kakashi had a contemplated look on his face. “You might have something there Naruto. Those women never had any identification on them and when the police searched the house, they never found anything like that. Normally a serial killer keeps some sort of prize after he kills.” “It is possible that HE would track down Naruto after learning that the baby survived. And he is known for using women as assassins. But this can wait for later, we want to know what you want to do Naruto.” Iruka stated as he turned his brown gaze to the blond. “Like I told Mr. Hebi, I want to hand the company over to Itachi. I want nothing to do with it and I want to stay at my current position. I want whatever profit I make to go into a fund for Konohamaru. I have no need for that of money since I made it through college on scholarships and grants.” Naruto said. “Are you sure Naruto?” Itachi asked as he leaned forward to assess the blond. “Yes, you are better at running than I. I’m more suited to be an assistant. We can draw up the contract together.” Naruto turned to Orochimaru. “I’m sorry that I don’t want to run Mr. Nam, I mean my father’s company.” Orochimaru waved his hand. “It’s quite alright. I completely understand. I’m just glad that this mystery has been solved. Nagato, are you alright?” Everyone’s attention went to the redhead. He was silent and staring intently at Naruto until he broke the silence. “I told her not to get mixed up with Namikaze. But as usual she didn’t listen. I can’t say I’m surprised though. Those two loved each other dearly even though she was promised to Madara Uchiha.” Itachi’s head snapped up at the name. “What do you mean promised to Madara?” “It was an arranged marriage. But Kushina couldn’t stand Madara and then met Minato at your father’s twenty-fifth birthday party. I believe you were around five or so. Those two fell hard for another. Kyuubi and I helped keep their secret. But Kushina was careless and Madara was irate at the situation. He wanted Minato’s head on a platter. But we never could assess whether or not he had anything to with their deaths.” Pein shrugged his shoulders. “Ah, well I guess we should the past in the past.” Kakashi said with a voice that sounded much more than his thirty five years. “I agree. We will keep this to ourselves understand? I will see what I can do about Kyuubi. If those women were indeed assassins, then I might have the ability to re open the case and see about getting him paroled.” Iruka stated as a plan began to form in his head. “I agree, I’ll help you in any way I can Iruka.” Pein answered. Naruto’s brain caught up to the conversation. “Wait, all you know each other? Even the old hag?” “Brat, what did I tell you about using that name?” Tsunade said as she leaned forward and whopped Naruto on the head. “But it’s not fair! You all kept this from me! I always wondered what was so wrong with me that my parents didn’t want and left me at an orphanage! And I learn today that they loved me! But I was born out of an affair! GAH!” Naruto yelled and fell back against his chair. “The situation wasn’t safe Naruto, especially with a man like my uncle who is a yakuza.” Itachi stated. Naruto blinked. “Wait, yakuza?” “Yes. My uncle runs his own yakuza, Akatsuki. He has been disowned by the family because of this. But he is a very powerful man and is relentless and has no mercy. I have no doubt he had strings pulled to have your uncle put into jail. But I don’t get why he wouldn’t have you killed. You are proof that he failed to acquire the one person he wanted most.” Itachi pondered aloud. “It’s because I was always adopted and then sent back to a different orphanage each time I bet. I was never in a situation where he could lay his hands on me.” Naruto guessed. “That’s a possibility. Or he felt the time hasn’t come yet. But with you working with me, he might be a bit more hesitant. I was able to steal some of his underlings and he has resented me ever since.” Itachi explained. “Mr. Uchiha, I know you said that you didn’t want to be disturbed today, but there’s a call on line one. The man claims to be Madara Uchiha.” Karin’s voice filtered through the room. Itachi immediately picked up the phone and put it on speaker. “Hello uncle.” “Itachi, it’s so nice to hear your voice. I hear you’re having a lovely party right now with some old acquaintances of mine. I’m insulted that you didn’t invite me.” “I wasn’t aware that you knew these men until today. Cut to the chase, what is it that you want?” Itachi demanded, not losing his composure. “I want that abomination that whore created with that bastard. In exchange for him, his godson will live.” Madara said silkily. “Boss,” Konohamaru’s voice was meek. “Please help me. I’m sorry about this morning! Please help me.” “You son of a bitch! You better not harm him!” Naruto screamed as he tore out of his seat. “I would watch my tone young man. I might take it out on your godson. I have a limo waiting right outside for you Naruto. I want you to go to it right now with one escort. As soon as you get to it, I will let your godson go with your companion.” Madara said before he hung up. “I’ll go with you son.” Kakashi said as he stood up. “But Dad!” Naruto exclaimed. “Listen, I’m former Bureau of Investigations, I know Madara rather well. He will not hesitate to kill Konohamaru. This way, I have a chance to at least get him since I’m still on retainer.” Naruto knew that he couldn’t win this argument so he just hung his head and began to head out of the office. He couldn’t look at anyone right now. He just wished he knew how his life had gotten to this mess. He wanted to remain just plain old Naruto but now, he was the heir to a multi-billion company that he didn’t even want. He could never look at Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki as his parents. As he approached the limo, Naruto felt a knot form in his stomach. He was resigned for whatever fate had in store for him. But he didn’t care what happened to him as long as Konohamaru was safe. He was grateful then that he had a will made up as soon as he took up guardianship of the boy. The brunet would go to his parents if anything happened to him. When the door opened to the limo, a pale body slipped out. Naruto jumped back as Konohamaru jumped out as well. The blond then rushed forward and pulled the brunet close to him and hugged him to his body. He buried his nose into Konohamaru’s hair and cried. “He’s dead. What the hell?” Kakashi muttered as he checked for a pulse. “Who is it?” Naruto asked. “Madara. I don’t understand how he is dead. I better make some calls.” Kakashi said as he flipped his phone open. Naruto tuned out his father and focused on Konohamaru. The kid was silent, not saying anything. “Are you okay kid?” The blonds’ voice seemed to bring the boy out of his thoughts. “I don’t know. I’m so sorry Boss! I want to stay with you!” “It’s okay! I know you didn’t mean anything you said this morning! He didn’t try anything did he?” “No. He didn’t really talk to me.” Naruto startled when he felt a hand on his shoulder and stared into the mismatched eyes of his father. “The ambulance is here, let them assess Konohamaru.” Naruto nodded and let the paramedic take the kid. The blond didn’t really know what to do so he sat on the curb. He couldn’t believe things had turned out this way. The situation could have been a lot worse and yet here they were safe while Madara was dead. Naruto felt someone standing next to him and he looked up and met dark eyes. Itachi sat down beside him and pulled the blond to his side. “I know I’m not Sasuke, but I can try. I don’t want to see you break because of my family. I’m sorry Naruto, I won’t blame you if you resigned.” “I don’t want to resign! I can’t judge you because of your relative’s actions! That’s just wrong! Please Itachi, don’t blame yourself for this!” Naruto sobbed as he turned to the Uchiha and hugged him, burying his face into the other’s chest and crying. Itachi didn’t say anything. He wrapped his arms around his assistant and offered the best comfort he could. He really wished his little brother was here to help. He wasn’t good at this sort of thing and it didn’t help that he had a soft spot where Naruto was concerned. Itachi felt a glare directed at him and he met mismatched eyes. He knew the look that resided there; it was in his eyes once upon a time when Sasuke was a kid. The look promised pain if he so much as hurt the blond. But Itachi wasn’t interested in Naruto like that and he shook his head at the other man, indicating he held no interest in the blond. “Let me have him ‘Tachi. Thank you for helping him.” Sasuke said as he sat down on the other side and took the blond from him. For some odd reason, Itachi’s arms felt rather empty. And he couldn’t help the spark of jealousy that flared up when he saw how tenderly Sasuke held Naruto and how the blond just instantly melted into the other. But the kid was only his assistant so Itachi squashed any feeling he had and stood up. He had to give his report to the police along with what little evidence he had gathered over the years. He would talk to his friends later to see if they would testify. He would ruin Madara’s reputation for messing with his assistant.While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
