Even as late as he was, they'd forced breakfast on him and made him promise to each lunch. He'd rolled his eyes on the way out the door, but he felt good at their concern, nonetheless. Especially since they made him promise to be available for dinner. They wanted to go out again.
At least he'd remembered to grab his dress pants and sweater. If they insisted on dating him, he was going to have to buy more clothes. The number of actual dates he'd been on had been few and far between, so, it hadn't mattered.
Anticipating that night had the day dragging, though. He did eat lunch since he'd promised, but it had consisted of a cup of instant ramen from the vending machine. He wanted to distract himself with grading instead of having time to think.
He still wasn't quite sure he was ready to think it all through. If they asked him point blank what he wanted, he still didn't have anything more concrete than that he wanted to be around them. But maybe that was enough, maybe he was making it way more complicated than he needed to.
Was it that simple? He thought again of the last few days when they'd been doing basic things together. Eating meals or reading or when he'd been grading papers. The game of Hachi Hachi. Cooking with Kakashi. Cleaning up with Yamato. Mundane day to day things and he'd enjoyed all of them.
Yeah, he wanted that. He wanted to know that he was going home to them. That if they were sent out that he'd be the first thing they looked for when they came back. He wanted to know that it was him they'd go to for comfort, that their arms would always be there to fight back the grief when the memories of his parents snuck up on him.
But it wasn't his place to be the one to suggest it. They had the relationship before he came along. They may love him, but that still didn't give him the right to barge in on what they already had together.
He shoved the feelings aside for another afternoon, another night. They'd go to dinner, he'd probably go home with them and sleep next to them again. And maybe, at least, he could have that with them for a very long while.
When the students started coming back from lunch, he was surprised. Despite his attempts to distract himself from his thoughts, he had still gotten lost in them. He glanced at the clock. Hopefully, the afternoon would go quickly and then he could see them again.
"We're going to have to ask him point-blank." Kakashi said on their way home.
"I had a feeling we would. We should have known that, honestly. How well did we deal with subtleties with each other?" Yamato asked as he unlocked the front door.
Kakashi snorted in answer. "Exactly. And how well did we read each other's emotions?" Yamato shook his head as he pulled his vest off and hung it up.
"We didn't. Not very well, anyway." Kakashi headed into the bedroom.
"And even worse: how many questions did we dodge before we finally were forced to answer them? Shouldn't we have learned by now that, especially for men, talking isn't the first solution?" Yamato asked with a snort.
"You're right." The copy nin sighed. "I guess I'd hoped that he'd learn more from what we'd gone through and told him about." Kakashi frowned in thought as he pulled his uniform off and dropped it in the wash basket.
"You know that's not how it works," Yamato said on his way into the bathroom.
Kakashi sighed. "I should, shouldn't I?" He stared at himself in the mirror a moment. "It certainly didn't for Sasuke," he muttered.
Yamato turned to him, arms crossed over his chest. "I thought you'd let go of that."
The copy nin shrugged. "For the most part." His eyes met Yamato's. "I haven't screwed us up, but…"
"You're not going to screw this up, either. There are three of us in this, remember? If it were to fall apart, it's not just up to you to make that happen. And there's only one of us that you can control." Yamato turned back around and twisted the knobs on the shower.
"I know, I know, me." He sighed. "I don't want to lose him," he said, quietly.
The younger man turned around again. "I don't, either." He tugged on Kakashi's hand. "Let's get cleaned up. One step in the right direction is to not be too late."
Kakashi rolled his eyes. "Right."
They weren't, but it was close. It was six forty-five when Iruka opened the door to them. "You didn't have to knock." He said with a raised eyebrow. "You were broadcasting again. I would have needed to be dead to miss it."
Kakashi chuckled, then blushed. "Izumo was passing by down on the street."
"And he was already annoyed at having passed Raido a few blocks ago," Yamato offered.
Iruka shook his head. "Really, Kakashi, they've heard by now that… I've been… seeing you two," he finished a little lamely. He still didn't know what to call it.
Kakashi was scowling at the mention of Raido. Iruka just stared at him, confused, so Yamato stepped up. "Why… don't we head to dinner?"
The other two turned to look at him. "Right. Sorry," Iruka said and turned to get his jacket.
Their arms went around him as soon as they hit the street. Kakashi's around his shoulders and Yamato's around his waist, and he couldn't hide the grin. Especially when they passed Izumo a block down the street where he'd been sitting at a ramen stand. He'd purposefully looked up at Yamato at that moment and they'd kissed.
"Izumo?" Yamato asked.
Iruka blushed. "Initially, but then I looked at you, and…" he trailed off and blushed even brighter.
Yamato grinned. "I'll take them." He dropped another one on Iruka's scar.
A few minutes later, they stopped in front of one of the barbecue restaurants. It was one that was very popular among the ninja. If anyone hadn't heard about them being together before this, they would after that evening. Iruka wondered if it was deliberate.
Their table was fairly close to the front and they had insisted he sit between them on one side again. When they got settled and ordered drinks, Yamato leaned in and left a soft kiss on Iruka's cheek. "I missed you today."
He blushed again and looked up. "I missed you, too."
"See? Telling us what you think isn't so hard, is it?" Yamato asked.
Iruka sighed. "No, not really." He turned to look at Kakashi, who'd taken his hand.
"So, anything fun with your students today?" He asked. They kept the conversation light throughout dinner. Iruka wasn't sure whether it was intentional or not, but he was glad of it.
Shorty after their food was brought out and laid on the grill, their first table visitor came by. "Hello!" Genma greeted them as he approached, holding Shizune's hand.
"Hello." Iruka said, reaching with his left hand for his sake because his right was still in Kakashi's hand.
"I can't say I remember seeing you here all that often." Genma turned to Kakashi.
"We thought we'd try some place different. Ramen gets to be a bit much after a while. How are you?" The visible eye crinkled with a smile.
Genma laughed. "I can't understand how you guys can eat that much ramen. I'm good." He turned to Yamato, "you guys home for a while?"
"Till the new year. Unless something crops up." Yamato said, then reached for Iruka's other hand.
The action was not missed on the couple. "Yeah, that can always happen. Be nice if they'd leave the holidays alone, though, wouldn't it?"
"No kidding." Iruka sighed. "I'm perfectly happy staying in the classroom, thank you."
Shizune chuckled. "You just like sleeping in a bed."
"Can you blame me?" He asked.
"Not one bit." Genma chuckled and sent a look toward the other two. "Well, enjoy your dinner."
They said their goodbyes and the three left at the table sat in silence until they were gone. "So, if there's any part of the rumor mill that hasn't heard about us, it's about to. I like Genma, but he can talk." Iruka laughed.
"Yeah, Shizune's pretty good for it, too. Fiercely loyal to Tsunade, but almost as bad as the old hens at the teahouses when she gets going." Kakashi said as they took their seats at a booth nearby.
They must have seen half of the ninja corps over the course of their dinner. The other two made sure Iruka was holding one hand or another every time someone stopped by. But, and this surprised him a little, no one seemed fazed by it. Either they'd heard the rumor and really were just wanting to talk, or they hid it well. In fact, the only real surprise from others seemed to be because his hair was down.
This fact was remarked on last by Sai when he'd stopped at their table with Sakura and Naruto. Iruka hadn't spent much time talking to the younger man, but he'd heard plenty from the other members of the team. He'd felt bad for him. For all that Iruka had been through, he couldn't understand the things he'd heard about the Root organization and the thought of having to do what they'd done… he was damned glad Danzo was dead.
"Iruka-sensei!" Naruto greeted them. "How are you?"
"Good, Naruto. Sakura-chan. Sai-kun." He smiled. After seeing them at dinner the other night, he was a little more comfortable. "How are you guys?"
"Good, actually. They threatened to do bad things to me if I made them eat at Ichiraku's again. So, here we are." Naruto said.
Kakashi raised his visible eyebrow. "Bad things?"
"Yeah." Naruto said and leaned over. "They told me they'd never buy ramen again," he said in a stage whisper.
Iruka stared at him, wondering about the 'they.' He exchanged glances with Yamato and noticed that he'd caught it, too. The teacher raised his eyebrows in question, but the older man just shrugged.
"I can see how that would be horrible for you." Kakashi said, suppressing a laugh.
"Naruto, let's go. We really are interrupting their dinner this time and we're hungry." Sakura said, pulling on him.
Naruto sighed. "Fine. Have a good dinner, Kakashi-sensei, Iruka-sensei, Yamato-taichou! See you later."
The three of them waved and watched as Naruto turned with the other two toward a booth near the back. As they walked away, Sai fell into step on the other side of the Naruto from Sakura. "Um…" Iruka said.
"I have no idea. They've been acting funny for the last year." Kakashi said.
"I thought I saw Sai and Naruto together once. It kind of messed with me. He's spent so much time chasing after Sakura. Then the rumors said that Naruto and Sakura were dating. But that looks…suspect."
"The night Yamato gave me the first sculpture, I had to chase him down at the ninja bar." At Iruka's raised eyebrows, Kakashi waved. "I'll tell you later. But when I walked into the bar, it was like something had gotten into the water. Everyone in there was paired up or something. And in one booth, Sai and Naruto were sitting together with Sai's hand down Naruto's pants. You were… anyway, I just couldn't quite make the math work on that." Kakashi picked up his bottle and drank out of it. He shook his head. "Or maybe I didn't want to figure it out."
"I was what?" Iruka asked, though he thought he knew. He had been dating Raido at the time.
"You were at the bar with Raido," Yamato said. "Kissing."
Iruka blushed. "Oh." He glanced at Yamato then at Kakashi. Neither man was looking at him. He couldn't quite decipher the looks on their faces. "Well, that was… a long time ago now."
"Yeah." Kakashi said, staring into his empty bottle. "Anyway, I suspect something is going on among the three of them, but none of them will say anything." He shrugged. "It's their business."
"Right." Iruka said. He couldn't quite figure out why the idea of him and Raido would bother them. They were involved with each other at that time, or, apparently, about to be. He stared at the table, but there was no wisdom to be had in the wood grain.
"I got drunk that night. Nearly made myself sick, in fact." Yamato said. "I was so nervous about giving Kakashi his gift."
The copy nin chuckled. "You almost did get sick. It was a close thing there for a moment."
"Yeah. I thought I was going to ruin the whole night because I of how much I had." He shook his head.
Iruka chuckled. "I thought you had an insane alcohol tolerance."
"Oh, I do," Yamato said. "I think I had something like six bottles of sake in the space of less than an hour."
"Wow." Iruka blinked at him. "You were nervous."
"Yeah, I'd never gotten so close to admitting my attraction before that." Yamato shook his head. "Anyway, that was one messed up night all around."
Iruka remembered it well. He and Raido had already been growing apart. They'd both gotten a little drunk and when Yamato had walked in, he'd nearly attacked Raido in an attempt to distract himself. So by the time Kakashi had showed up, they were making out heavily right there in the bar. The sex that night had been really good, but it was one of the last times they'd been together.
He had to admit part of that was his fault. He'd damned near called Kakashi's name out right in the middle of it. He didn't blame Raido for getting frustrated with them shortly thereafter and giving up.
Geez, I've been messed up for a long time. Iruka thought with a sigh. He forced the memories away and worked to shift the conversation to easier ground. By the time they finished their meal, things were much lighter.
When they left the restaurant, Kakashi and Yamato simply started walking toward their own house. Arms once more around the youngest of them, they didn't even give him a chance to question it. They just started walking.
The two older men glanced at each other and Yamato could tell just from the look in the copy nin's eye what he was thinking. He let his arm drop a little and when they were on an empty part of the street, started to tease Iruka's ass. Kakashi put his hand on the back of the teacher's neck and started rubbing it lightly and playing with his hair. They both knew what that did to him.
They weren't being fair, really, double teaming him the way they were. They wanted him aroused. They wanted him more than a little crazy so that by the time they got into the house, he wouldn't be able to think too much. And, by extension, start to worry.
It backfired a little on Yamato, though. About half way there, he was seriously aroused already. He had to readjust himself the best he could just so he could walk comfortably. Iruka glanced sideways at him with a smirk and a 'you deserve it' look in his eye.
He couldn't let that go. So when they passed an alley, he dragged the younger man into it and pinned him against the wall. His lips latched onto Iruka's neck as he ground his arousal against the other man's. "Fuck, Yamato," Iruka growled, his hands going to the other man's ass and squeezing.
Kakashi stood next to them, blocking the view from the street, watching. He'd always been a bit of a voyeur and having a live show in front of him of the two men that he lusted after most was even better. He started rubbing at the front of his own pants while he watched.
"If you weren't so sexy, this wouldn't be a problem," Yamato answered, when he let go of the skin. One hand snaked up under the younger man's sweater to tweak his nipple. "You're lucky we're in public because I'd fuck you right now."
Iruka moaned at the words, bucking against the other man. "What's stopping you? This is hardly public. Fuck me, already." He bit down on Yamato's neck in the exact spot he knew would make him craziest.
The older man groaned. "You asked for it," Yamato said, pulling at the button on Iruka's pants. He tugged them down out of the way and wet two of his fingers in his mouth. He yanked Iruka's legs up and pushed the fingers into his ass, working them around. "That's all you're getting."
"Yess," he hissed. Iruka fumbled to open the other man's pants and pulled his straining cock out. "God, now. Fuck me already," he groaned.
Before he could finish, Yamato started pushing his cock slowly into the younger man. Iruka grit his teeth. The lack of lubrication stung, but in that moment he was too aroused to give a damn. The pre-cum on Yamato's cock helped, but not quite enough. Even so, he was too anxious. He wanted it in there and he wanted it now. He pushed against the older man and groaned loudly when he felt the curls against his ass cheeks.
Yamato started moving immediately and within a few seconds, he was thrusting hard into the younger man. Iruka's back pounded against the wall, he gripped the shoulders under him hard, and even through the older man's sweater, he was going to leave marks. Their grunts were low and guttural, the sounds of skin slapping against skin loud in the quiet alleyway.
Kakashi's harsh breaths barely registered on the other two. His hand was around his own cock, stroking in time with Yamato's thrusts, both eyes fixed on the sight in front of him. He could just see Yamato's cock moving in and out of Iruka, and his gaze kept switching from that view to their faces. Both had their eyes screwed up tight, mouths hanging open as they gasped in air, their impending orgasms getting closer by the second.
Iruka was fairly certain he'd lost the ability to see and hear. All he could focus on was the cock pounding into him, the feel of Yamato's breath on his skin and the rough sweater under his fingertips as he dug into the muscle. He was so close, so fucking close. So when Yamato grunted the single word in his ear, "come," he couldn't have held back for anything. He bit on the shoulder in front of him to muffle the shouted "fuck" and came. This was followed almost immediately by a similar shout from the other man as he buried himself deeply and shuddered through his own orgasm.
It took a few minutes before any of them could think straight or even breathe. Yamato and Iruka glanced over at Kakashi, who was leaning against the wall, panting almost as hard as they were. His pants were open and it was obvious what he'd just been doing.
Yamato eased back and let Iruka down carefully onto his feet. The younger man's legs were unsteady, so he helped hold him up. It took them another few moments before they could breathe reasonably well and put themselves together. Iruka blushed at the mess he'd made all over both of their sweaters, but there was nothing they could do about it at the moment.
He cleared his throat and started to look away, but Yamato pulled his face back around and kissed him softly. "That was amazing, 'Ruka."
Iruka's tension eased and he grinned. "Yes it was." He returned the kiss and when they pulled back, his smile faded. "I love you." He realized it was getting easier to say it.
Yamato's smile widened. "I love you, too."
Kakashi cleared his throat. "I love you both and that was a hell of a show, but I think someone's coming." He stepped up to them and dropped kisses on each. The younger two men blushed. "Come on, let's go home," Kakashi put an arm around each of them and they turned out of the alley.
The street was empty so whoever was there had either turned around or already passed. None of the three of them could manage to muster a care.
"Let go of me!" Iruka fought against the arms holding him back. He struggled, but his thin child's body was no match for the jounin holding onto him. "My mom and dad are still out there fighting! Let! ME! GO!"
Iruka sat up suddenly in bed. He was confused for a moment, the remnants of the dream still holding on. He was covered in a cold sweat and his breath was still coming in gasps. As he pushed his hair back out of his face, he saw his hands were still shaking.
When he finally came back to the present, he looked to his left. Kakashi was on his side, curled around where Iruka had just been laying. He glanced to his right to see Yamato sprawled out on his stomach, taking up almost half of the bed. His arm had been over Iruka until the dream had awakened him.
He glanced at the glowing green numbers on the alarm clock. It was just after two. He sighed. Getting back to sleep was going to damned near impossible.
He carefully climbed out of bed and padded into the bathroom. He didn't bother with the light, not wanting to really look in the mirror anyway. He turned the cold tap on and let it run a moment before cupping his hands under the stream. After he'd splashed his face and dried it, he stood there, braced against the sink, willing himself to calm.
He felt the chakra approach. "I still have remnants of nightmares from the labs. I can't consciously remember any of it; I was too young. But every so often a series of images hits me." Yamato paused in the doorway. "I wake to cold sweats and sometimes sheer terror."
Iruka turned to him, "I set my grief aside years ago. You'd think I could stop waking to nightmares after all this time."
The older man shook his head. "I don't think it works that way. Your subconscious is working on something. I think that's why they came out now."
Iruka frowned. "Yeah, it is at that. No question there."
"What's on your mind, 'Ruka?" Yamato stepped into the bathroom and pulled the younger man against him.
The teacher stared at the chest in front of him. "Us. All of us." He took a deep breath and looked up, deciding to take a chance. "Where do I fit in with you?"
Yamato considered him a moment before stepping back. He took Iruka's hand and pulled him along behind him out to the living room. He switched the lamp on the end table to low and sat on the couch. The younger man gave him a puzzled look before joining him.
Yamato picked up the statue he'd made, now finished, and handed it to the other man. "Where do you think you fit in?"
Iruka stared at it for a few moments, saying nothing. He wanted it to be true. Wanted it so badly. He ran his fingers lightly over the figures of Yamato and Kakashi where they were wrapped around him.
They both looked up as a the tall silver-haired figure moved into the room. He took the space on the other side of Iruka on the couch. He ran his hand down over the long brown hair, then placed a gentle kiss over the scar that stretched from cheek to cheek.
"You don't have to be alone anymore, Iruka." Kakashi put an arm around the younger man's back. "We love you. We want you here. Is that so hard to believe?"
Iruka closed his eyes, fighting his emotions and nodded, almost imperceptibly. "I've been by myself for so long. I… I don't know how not to be." The whispered words ended the battle and a single tear escaped.
"We understand. We've both been there." Yamato put his arm under Kakashi's.
The teacher fought for control. "You've loved each other for so long. I…" he shook his head and swiped at the drop of moisture still clinging to his cheek. "I have no right to intrude on that." He looked down at the statue again.
"Does that --" Kakashi pointed at the sculpture, "look like you're intruding?"
Iruka knew there was only one answer to that. He was still fighting it, though for the life of him, he couldn't understand why. He stared, unseeingly, at the wood in his hands. In his mind, the image that kept replaying was the picture of his parents as they walked away for the last time.
Was he afraid of intruding, like he said? Was he afraid of coming between them? Of causing problems?
Or was he really afraid that if he did become part of their lives that, in the end, he'd lose them, too?
