Iruka stayed for most of the evening, helping to entertain Yamato. Kakashi was glad for it because he was still trying to cope with the terror that came with the summons to the hospital. He didn't know how some of the families did it, because he himself wasn't doing so well.
He was grateful that Iruka had hung around long enough for Yamato to get tired, too. By the time the teacher headed home, Yamato was yawning and nearly passing out. He'd managed to dodge another fight. He made a note to thank Iruka when he had a chance.
The next morning, Tsunade checked him over once more and he was cleared to take him home. He had strict orders to put him in bed - to sleep, and nothing strenuous for at least a week. She gave them a bottle of painkiller that Kakashi was fairly certain would get stuck into a cabinet and forgotten.
By the time Yamato was once again in bed, he was exhausted. Even with transporting, the bit of movement he did took a lot out of him. But he was very glad to be back in their own bed. Kakashi got him undressed and settled, and the bandages were a good reminder of what he wasn't capable of when he looked over the younger man's body. With that thought in his head, he brewed some tea, picked up one of his books, and settled in next to him.
He'd thought the younger man was asleep, so he was surprised when he heard the question. "Why did you leave?"
Kakashi blinked down at him. "Leave?"
"ANBU." Yamato said, rolling onto his side and closer to Kakashi.
"I thought you knew," he said, setting his book down and turning to face the other man.
Yamato shook his head. "No… I mean, I have an idea, but I'm not sure."
Kakashi took a deep breath. "I couldn't handle leaving team members behind anymore." He gave in to the need to touch and ran his fingers over the soft brown hair. "I got into a fight with the ANBU commander over it." He chuckled. "I punched him when he wanted to refuse my resignation. Then I knew I really wasn't cut out for that anymore."
Yamato's eyebrows went up. "You punched him? Who was it?"
"Ibiki." Kakashi said, his lips quirking.
"Wait, Ibiki was ANBU Commander? I thought he was just the Interrogation unit." Yamato asked.
"He used to be the direct commander."
"And you punched him?" The younger man's eyes widened.
Kakashi nodded. "He resigned shortly after I did, went to the intelligence side instead. Seems that he wasn't any happier with the idea than I was, but didn't think it was his position to question it." Kakashi shook his head. "I never thought I would. Question the rules like that, that is. But…"
"Yeah, I know how you feel about it. And about rules." Yamato looked down at their hands. His left one was on top and he stared at his ring finger for a moment. He found himself wondering what would have happened if he hadn't come back. He swallowed hard. "I'm sorry. I almost didn't come home."
Kakashi wrapped his arms around Yamato, pulling him closer. He closed his eyes and worked to bury the remnants of the terror. "You did your best. And you did come home." He swallowed. "We're shinobi, we know that's always a possibility."
"Doesn't make it any easier to take." Yamato said. "I'd go insane if you were sent out without me."
"Yeah." Kakashi said, no idea what else to say. Because he did go a little insane, more than a little, while he was gone. A fact he was reminded of every time his hand started to hurt again.
Being injured sucked. Yamato hated being stuck in bed, unable to do for himself. He fought with himself over asking for anything, grumbled at the need for help moving around. Those were bad enough, but when it came time to be bathed, he'd nearly punched his lover and best friend.
Kakashi had helped him into the bathroom, intending to help him get cleaned up. But when the reality of what the older man was going to have to do for him was realized, Yamato had nearly died of humiliation.
So he'd fought it, at first, insisting on trying to take care of himself. It was the first major fight they had, in fact. "Dammit, Kakashi, I can do it myself!" He'd practically roared when the copy nin had moved to turn on the tap, despite Yamato's initial protests.
Kakashi stared at him a moment, gritting his teeth, then turned on his heel and headed for the door. Yamato never snapped and that was the only thing that kept him from pitting his physical strength against his lover's, injured or not and forcing the issue. He knew something was wrong, he just didn't know what. "You can barely move, why the hell are you being so damned stubborn?"
"I'm not being stubborn. You're the stubborn one. I'll be fine. Get. Out." Yamato threw the bottle of shampoo at the doorway, which Kakashi neatly dodged. Staring at the younger man for another moment, fighting his own urge to throw a punch, he stepped through the door. It was only the fact that his hand still hurt that kept him from hitting something as he closed it.
Of course, when he had left, Yamato was left staring at the tiles of the shower, cursing himself. It was pure embarrassment that had him kicking the copy nin out in the first place. He could barely stand, much less shower himself and he knew it. He leaned over to turn on the tap and when the sharp pain cut through his back, stretching his open wound, the loud "FUCK" slipped out before he could stop it.
Bent over, propped against the wall, gasping in pain, he stared at himself in the mirror. He considered punching the wall, but remembered that's what Kakashi himself had done and all it had gotten him was two broken knuckles. He sighed and eased back onto the side of the tub.
He swallowed hard and forced himself to focus. He took several deep breaths, closing his eyes. What the hell was he doing? He didn't have to struggle on his own. That's what having a partner was supposed to be about, wasn't it? He buried his face in his hands and rubbed at it hard. Then, swallowing his pride, he carefully stood and moved to the door.
Kakashi was standing just on the other side, leaning against the jamb, arms crossed over his chest. "I'm sorry," Yamato mumbled.
"Forget about it. Let's get you cleaned up." He picked up the shampoo bottle and moved into the room. He worked quickly and efficiently, managing to keep Yamato's humiliation to a bare minimum. And after it was over he felt that much worse for fighting it in the first place.
"I was out of line." He said when he was back in bed and Kakashi was stretched out next to him, book in hand.
The older man looked over at him. "Don't worry about it."
"Uh uh." Yamato said and reached out to pull the book away from him. He swallowed. "I was embarrassed. I still don't know how to handle this."
Kakashi frowned. "Handle what?"
Yamato struggled to sit up, but gave up, deciding it wasn't worth it. "Us. We're together now. We live together, we're partners, but I'll be damned if I know how to handle it." He frowned.
The copy nin didn't say anything at first. He stared at Yamato a moment, frowning. "I would have reacted the same way."
The younger man sighed. "Aren't we the pair?"
Kakashi smiled. "Yes, and that's probably why we're not going to kill each other in the end." His face turned serious and he brushed the damp hair out of Yamato's face. "We'll figure all of this out. I'm not exactly an expert, either."
Yamato leaned forward and dropped a light kiss on Kakashi's lips. "God, I miss that already." He sighed. "Well, I'm sorry."
Kakashi kissed him back, taking his time with it. When he pulled back, he stared at the younger man for a moment. "Apology accepted. Let's just… learn from it, okay?"
Yamato nodded and, despite himself, his eyes drooped. Kakashi watched him as he fell asleep and he sighed. They still had a long road ahead of them.
They managed to avoid any more major fights that day. That afternoon, after he woke up, they had a few visitors. Naruto, Sakura and Sai stopped by. Naruto was as loud and obnoxious as ever, which was a nice distraction. Sai had done a painting of the five of them as a gift and Yamato was surprised at the "Team Seven" title underneath. He'd only ever considered himself a temporary member of the team and it meant a lot that they considered him a full part of it.
Sakura had brought him flowers, which also surprised him a little. "Thank you. Oh, and thank you for the magazines. They helped keep boredom away while I was in."
"Magazines?" Sakura turned a puzzled look on Kakashi.
"Must be a mistake," Kakashi said, smoothly, and Yamato recognized the tone of voice. Kakashi knew something.
So, he'd let it go, grateful, instead for something else to think about. Why had Iruka lied?
Unfortunately, they didn't get a chance to talk about it because just as the team left, the man in question showed up. Yamato paid a little more attention to the teacher's behavior. But this time the other man didn't act nervous or anything, so he couldn't figure it out. He didn't want to confront him and make him uncomfortable, so Yamato shook it off as his imagination and simply tried to enjoy the card games and distraction. He couldn't miss, however, just how nice Iruka's butt looked in his uniform pants as he walked out.
"He does have a very nice butt, doesn't he?" Kakashi's voice interrupted his thoughts.
Yamato blushed. "Um, sorry, I…" Yamato stammered.
Kakashi turned on the bed and looked at him, blinking. "What?"
The younger man sighed and closed his eyes. "You just caught me looking at another man's ass."
The copy nin nodded."Yes, I did. We may be…committed to each other, but you're neither blind nor dead. And in case you didn't notice, I also commented on it."
Yamato glanced over at his lover. "You're not upset?"
Kakashi shook his head. "Would you be?"
Yamato frowned. "No, I can't say I would be."
"Look, if you went and fucked him behind my back, I'd be pissed. Looking? Hell, no." Kakashi shrugged.
Yamato pondered that a moment. "Huh. I have to admit, he's hot."
Kakashi grinned. "Yes, yes he is."
Yamato shook his head. "I guess I just didn't think about it, you know?" He sighed. "It's… never come up before."
"That's true. But…," he paused. "Let's just say it right now. We don't fuck around, that's easy, okay?" At Yamato's nod, he continued. "But I'm not going to say anything if you look and you don't say anything when I see something I like. Are you okay with that?" Kakashi asked.
The younger man nodded. "Yeah, I am." He sighed and rubbed his hands over his face. "You know, this is one of the reasons I think I never got into a real relationship before, besides not really having time for it. I don't… talk about stuff. Just doesn't occur to me. Until, that is, I'm looking at a very nice ass as it walks out the door and my boyfriend catches me doing it."
Kakashi laughed. "Right." He shook his head, the smile fading. "You know, Tsunade asked me at one point while you were out if I should have her give you extra pain killer. Told me that it might make healing take longer." He paused. "I knew what you'd want, though I didn't want you to hurt anymore, but what really threw me off about that was that I was making a decision like that for you…"
Yamato blinked. "Huh. Never thought about that kind of thing, but yeah, I guess you would be. Closest thing to… family that I have." He stared at the shuriken pattern on the comforter and frowned. Maybe they didn't share a name or blood ties, but he did have family now. He let that turn over in his head as exhaustion took over and he fell asleep.
Even with more visits from the team and Iruka, by the fourth day, Yamato was sick of the bedroom. He'd had enough of being in bed, when all he could do was sleep or read, and needed to at least move around the house. He was annoyed to no end to be waited on hand and foot and he needed something, anything to distract himself.
Because the more time he had on his hands, the more time he had to think. And the more he thought, the more he realized that he seriously wanted something. And he had no idea how Kakashi would react. But two days after escaping the bedroom, it was still on his mind. So when they'd finished dinner that night, he set his chopsticks down and sighed.
"I want to leave ANBU permanently." He watched Kakashi's reaction carefully, but the copy nin didn't so much as blink.
"I had a feeling this was coming." Kakashi said, nodding.
Yamato blinked at him. "That's it?"
Kakashi shrugged. "It's your decision. I won't say that I'm not happy about it, though."
"You are?" The younger man hadn't quite expected that.
Kakashi sat back and sipped at his tea, considering him carefully. He struggled with saying it, then decided he could handle this much. "You were gone barely more than twenty-four hours. Those were the most terrifying hours of my life." He chuckled. "Only two people would talk to me while you were gone, Sakura and Iruka. I nearly took everyone else's heads off."
He swallowed. "Being gone on a regular mission without me? Hard, yes. But not nearly as insane as being gone on an ANBU mission." He took a deep breath. "We both know they're about a hundred times more dangerous than a standard mission. So, from a completely selfish standpoint, I'd be happy about it." He paused to take another drink of his tea. "It would be ANBU's loss, but for me…" he shrugged and let it trail off.
"Regardless of what I think, though, you have to do what's right for you. I know a few people who have been in way too long. They weren't… quite right by the time they finally left." Kakashi finished, sipping again at his tea.
Yamato stared at his empty plate, then stood and picked it up, grabbing the other man's on the way to the kitchen. "It gets to you after a while, that's for sure." He said as he turned on the water in the sink. "But it's more than that. I… " he stopped and just stared at the suds in the dish tub a moment. "I'm tired of leaving people behind."
Kakashi came up behind him and wrapped his arms around Yamato's waist. "I understand."
"I'm tired of that attitude, tired of the secrecy, too. I don't want to have to be two different people anymore. I want one name. Hell, it's bad enough I only have one name." Yamato shook his head and started washing the plates.
"What do you mean?" Kakashi asked, taking the clean plates and drying them.
Yamato glanced over. "I'm…Yamato. Just Yamato. That's it. I have Senju's genetic makeup, but I'm not his actual descendent. I don't even know my original name. They have no idea know who my parents were. There were so many children kidnapped back then and reported missing…" he shrugged.
"Ah." Kakashi said. This was something he couldn't understand. He'd hated his family name for so long. That's why he started wearing the mask in the first place.
"Anyway, I'm tired of two lives, two names - two first names. I'm tired of leaving people behind." He sighed. "I'm done with it."
"Well, you have my support, for what it's worth." Kakashi said as he put the plates away and started drying the pan. "I might suggest you simply turn in your resignation quietly, though, and avoid punching anyone."
Yamato laughed. "Right. I think I can manage that."
He'd gotten close, though. He ended up giving up on the commander and talking directly to Tsunade herself about it, instead. The current ANBU commander had been, well, in a word, a prick. He tried to refuse to take it, that he needed Yamato too much, so Yamato just gave up the argument, turned around and walked away.
Tsunade had been a bit more understanding. He and Kakashi had gone to see her together. "ANBU needs people like you." Tsunade sighed, "I wish that they didn't have to operate the way that they do." She didn't see the way his lips tightened at that. He'd begun to seriously question that, but it wasn't his place to actually do so vocally. "But they do. And I'd rather see you step back from them and still be able to carry out your missions and duties as a regular shinobi than have it get to you and maybe make it so that you can't do either some day."
She paused and looked him over. "Will you be keeping Yamato?"
He nodded. "I'd prefer to."
She nodded. "Very well. Consider yourself a permanent part of Team Seven with Kakashi, Sakura, Naruto and Sai. You'll be sent out in a few more days when you're recovered." She frowned, glancing at Kakashi. "We've heard a bit more about what's happening in Iwa through the Kazekage in Suna. I can't trust ANBU right now, so I'm going to have to depend on your team for this. Finish your recovery and report back to me in two days. And be ready for a long trip."
